Have you done this? How have you done this?

I'm 5'8" and 19st.
I know I need to eat less and move more.

I have small children and I'm still breastfeeding. Apart from the standard chasing a toddler I'm pretty sedentary. I do all the cooking, not terribly unhealthy food but probably much too much of it.

Help me give myself a kick up my huge arse please!!

I'm I. The trap of weighing everyday - need to stop it!

I actually think it would be good to ban the scales @Someonesayroadtrip for the first few weeks. Despite dramatic dietary changes in the first week, I lost nothing & was gutted. But what am I going to do-just give up? A month in & I feel good & would have estimated that Id lost more than the scales say if I hadn't seen them

I think I do need to start logging calories, although it seems such a faff. I did log them on mfp for a week & was usually just under what I needed so stopped after that.

The blood sugar diet is interesting - also that certain items seem to hinder a weight loss. Strangely, the first week, I had a lot of couscous & I wondered if it wasn't helping. I'm trying to mostly switch from my beloved wine to gin at the weekends now with the occasional dry weekend.

Someonesayroadtrip · 04/06/2020 12:10

Thanks all. I have realised I have a very unhealthy relationship with food. I think I need to ban the scales for a bit, I'm a bit obsessive with it, my weight goes up even when I aren't eaten anything, and then I just try and exercise more and it still doesn't change. So yeah, I need to step away from the scales. I did start measuring. I lost an inch off my breast and half off my arms and gained an inch on my thighs 🤔 but maybe I focus on that instead. I think I was just so disgusted with my weight that I just wanted that number to change too badly.

Due to my unhealthy relationship with food, I'm often do unintentionally stave myself. I literally go until 2-4 pm without eating as a norm and then scoff high calorie food until bed, and it's not that I'm hungry I just have an addiction to chocolate. I always said it was fine, I don't drink alcohol, smoke or drink caffeine so that was my vice but the reality is it's probably worse.

Thanks for the support everyone. It means a lot, it's been a bit of a reality check.

buckeejit · 04/06/2020 13:55

Do you scoff galaxy & aero & other love cocoa content bars?

I have the occasional square of dark choc to satisfy the urge. Also have you tried cacao nibs? They're weird but would certainly take the craving away

Nixi4 · 04/06/2020 15:02

I think we are all here because we have unhealthy relationships with food, you absolutely wouldn’t be on this thread if you don’t. I’m not here to prescribe or judge others for their weight loss journey but rather to cheerlead for success however they happen. I’m looking for others in the same circumstance as me, to support especially when it’s a tough day. I hope that others have the same sentiment as me.

daisyhead08 · 04/06/2020 15:56

I just want to echo what Nixi said. None of us ended up in this situation because we have appropriate relationships with food. I'm also here to try to find a sense of support for myself on this long journey, I don't have that IRL and it's nice to be able to be honest about my weight, my struggles and my successes with others who are in the same boat.

HoldingForGeneralHugs · 04/06/2020 18:21

Nix it makes it easier when people are watching doesnt it? I told everyone at work what i was doing and they ask how i am doing so id feel guilty being naughty so that helps too.

Stupid questions is your metabolism screwed forever or does it get better over time? ( or as well as it can as you get older)

NathanNathan · 04/06/2020 19:34

@HoldingForGeneralHugs this video by Jason Fung is quite long, but explains the metabolism reduction and how it can be challenged! A lot of other interesting stuff in there too.

buckeejit · 05/06/2020 12:31

@NathanNathan that was pretty good - I think I might try the 5:2 thing. I would find it easier than 16:8 daily I think & would like to join the family eating macaroni & cheese & general 'bad' things occasionally. Will need to do some more digging to see if there's a 500 cal menu I could cope with but it does make sense

@HoldingForGeneralHugs I definitely miss an office environment where there was always someone else trying to diet or avoid junk. Lack of motivational support IRL is difficult.

HoldingForGeneralHugs · 05/06/2020 17:59

Oo thanks for @NathanNathan i will have a look!

It is hard, will you be glad to go back to work?

One of my colleagues got us all sweet treats this afternoon all favourite things from Marks and Spencer (we have a small one in the hosp). I did not have one thing i went and ate my grapes instead. I am very proud of myself. My willpower is definitely much better post period.
So i have willpower 2 weeks of the week and sod all willpower the other 2 😂

Nixi4 · 05/06/2020 19:47

@NathanNathan thanks for the link, really interesting...

Nsky · 05/06/2020 20:35

Hello
Lost 2st, 8 years ago, been pretty much on top of that, till recently. ( last year)
I have some to lose, most things still fit, a bit clingy.
Did health unlocked, which was useful, always calorie counted.
Was pretty unwell for 9 months , till March, now sorted with meds.
I failed to stop adding my daily calories, and snacked too much , the snacks are my downfall.
I often find hot calorie free drinks help if hungry.
Good luck, and keep motivated

Namechanger0800 · 07/06/2020 12:49

Thanks for that Nathannathan - Dr Fung is the guy who wrote the obesity code which I recently read and found fascinating. Have spent this week tweaking what I was doing to follow some of the guidance in obesity code - so have tried intermittent fasting (16:8) although most days I've really been 18:6 because I've found I'm not hungry until that time. I've also dropped my carbs even lower but substituted with higher healthy fats. To be honest, I've probably eaten more calories in the 6 hour window than across a whole day before.

Well, have lost 5lbs. GrinShock....might be a fluke but I lost 1lb last week just general low carb. but this is my biggest weekly loss ever.

So that means I have met goal 1 to reach 15 stone (I'm actually 14:13) and am 1lb short of losing 2 stone. My absolute highest has been 17st 2lbs but I started this journey at 16:12.

My next goal is to get a BMI below 30 which is about 14 stone 1 - so 12lbs to lose. I've found breaking it down into smaller numbers seems to make the whole thing more achievable.

Hope everyone else is ok - any one else weighing in?

Nixi4 · 07/06/2020 13:24

@Namechanger0800 that’s fantastic, I’m going to review my approach as well.. my official weigh in is tomorrow but had a sneaky weigh in this morning and I haven’t lost at all... low carb (

Namechanger0800 · 07/06/2020 14:27

@Nixi4 I hear ya- I lost a pound last week and was pretty gutted.Did a bit of reading on the blood sugar diet forums and found a lot of advice there was if weight is not coming off as much as it should there's possibly insulin resistance issues that need lower carb. That combined with what the obesity code said about insulin resistance and intermittent fasting made me decide to combine both - so I dropped my carb intake to below 20g and combined it with 16:8 fasting. The theory being the really low carb means my blood sugar won't rise as much and the longer fast gives my body longer to get it lower before I eat again and cause the increase. Thus all the fat burning will happen - probably not explained it well - but after reading the obesity code I'm convinced I've fucked my metabolism creating insulin issues so taking these steps redressed the balance.

In reality it meant eating a brunch and tea abit earlier than usual. That's been easy- and pushing morning coffee with milk to elevenses instead. On top of that I've really cut down on milk - having almost none and fruit. Just a handful of berries which are in the lower carb range and not everyday - plus eat after food not as a snack I because of the blood sugar rise

It's still abit of an experiment but for the first time I feel like I am thinking about food as a fuel and then impact it has on me.

buckeejit · 08/06/2020 00:11

Wow @Namechanger0800 that's fantastic, I must follow your lead! What a boost to have a loss like that. Will investigate the obesity code & blood group thing - I'm more interested in blood group issues since recent Covid link with group A, (I'm A+).

I'm officially on weigh in tomorrow morning. Know I won't have a big loss like you but hoping for 2lb & will be disappointed if it's less than 1!

Nixi4 · 08/06/2020 08:00

+1.7lb 😩

I know I haven’t changed anything diet wise, I have increased exercise and I’m having some health issues with inflammation (joints, feet)..so will carry on and stay motivated. Things I’m going to change this week: 16:8,

HoldingForGeneralHugs · 08/06/2020 09:11

@Nixi4 if your exercising could it be muscle gain? And inflamed joints could add extra too? Have you taken measurements, have they changed?
Your right it is about being healthier too, an improvement on your heart rate response is really good!

I lost 2lbs (annoying as i weighed myself on sat and it was 3!).
Its only a small loss but im happy with it i had a few slip ups over the week so i am just happy ro have lost!

I think im slow accepting in my head that its not a quick fix and it is about changing my mindset too.

Nixi4 · 08/06/2020 10:03

@HoldingForGeneralHugs I keep on thinking I should measure, but never get round to it. Think I will make it a priority now. I’m optimistic that once my joints settle down I will have a really big loss!

Well done for 2lb, it’s still a fantastic achievement over a year that’s 104lb!!

HoldingForGeneralHugs · 08/06/2020 13:27

Im the same i need to do my measurements but just haven't got round to it!
I think you will too 😊

Thanks! When you put it like that its alot!!

Nsky · 08/06/2020 15:26

I only hsve 4 lbs to lose ( tho that pesky post menopasal shape changer annoys me hugely) I feel huge!
Just wishing you all hugs, motivation, wherever you are on the journey, as I said in earlierPost , I did lose 2st, 8 years ago.
Food never gives hugs, just a fix, and I think some suffer with addiction to an extent.
Trying not to focus on food too much, be busy and relax too.
I did find calorie cycling helps ( varying them on different days, adding up to the total weekly amount), and stopped plateau too

buckeejit · 08/06/2020 23:21

@Nixi4 that is so disheartening but stick at it.

I had an unbelievable 4lb loss this morning. So pleased. I have eaten more the last couple of days from logging calories again, had the calories spare so 'spent them' on treats like wine & cheese. I agree @Nsky that calorie cycling as you call it seems to help. Also checked how much water I should be drinking & although I thought I drank a lot, it was not enough.

Dh is trying to book next week off work. Theoretically that should be lovely but I'm quite worried how it will sabotage my efforts! Some thought needed on how I'll manage it. Picnics & walking hopefully!

daisyhead08 · 10/06/2020 19:05

I've been reading and trying to post a reply all week but work has been very busy and each time I tried to reply I got called away to do something work related. How dare they!

How is everyone doing? We've had some restrictions lifted this week in Ireland but I find I'm reluctant to go out until I'm at a lower weight! I saw a few people at the beginning of the week and no-one noticed so I'm even more determined now to have my big release moment Smile

I was reading some threads on here and a number of posters who started at a similar weight seemed to mention that it took about 3.5 stones for people to really notice weightloss. So more time for me, I'm back to my old job in September after a number of years in a different role and I really want to be slimmer. I had a better week after my disappointment of last week, I'm so glad I persevered now.

W 1: 6.8
W 2: 3.2
W 3+4: 5
W 5: 1
W 6: 4

Total loss: 20lbs

Namechanger0800 · 11/06/2020 19:22

Hi daisyhead - well done a good loss! Last time I lost some weight it was at 2.5-3 stone people noticed. Which is a it annoying and I think it's apt less when weight going on is recognised!

My total loss is 29lbs now and I can fit in my 'biggest' jeans again. Haven't seen many people really so don't know if they would notice really.

I've been keeping up with 30 day shred and now on level 3. Annoyingly I had a twinge in my back this morning but decided to do the workout but be mindful of the back but now it's even worse so think I might skip tomorrow if it's still aching and have 3 days off instead of just the weekend. Don't want to risk my back just when I'm starting to feel fitter and stronger.

Tried the Thai prawn curry recipe from the blood sugar diet book tonight- really tasty and can recommend if anyone's looking for new things to eat!

Nixi4 · 11/06/2020 23:38

I'm really struggling today, I can't stop fixating on the lack of movement on the scale. I know that I'm following my low carb diet correctly, I'm eating. 16:8.. I go out walking everyday (5 miles last night) which is a major achievement for me as not that long ago I resisted walking at all as it's painful. It's not like I don't have a lot to loose, I still have another 6 stone to go! I feel like it should be falling off me. I'm really sad that I'm not seeing the rewards for my efforts

HoldingForGeneralHugs · 12/06/2020 08:53

Daisyhead congratulations for your loss! 😊 i agree with namechanger people notice alot quicker when you put it on which is frustrating!

Namechanger its worth having a few days off i did my back at the start of lockdown and could barely move and instead of taking it easy when my back was better i went back to normal and did it again! Its just not worth it. Well done on getting that far though i never got to level 3!

Nix i was listing to a slimming world podcast on my way to work this morning the latest episode, it was about the frustration of the scales and just being just fed up with it all. Might be a worth to listen?
Honestly it takes time you are doing all the right things, cause your are home is it more on you mind? And do the measurements then i think you will see changes even if the scales arnt budging.
Dont give up your doing so well!
