Happy New Year! Here we are! Not just a brand new year but a brand new decade. New decades always feel that bit more significant and life enhancing.

I, like many others, would love to embrace the Twenty Twenties feeling more svelte, toned, healthier & happier. A massive part of that is underpinned by what we eat, when we eat it and why? In turn, how we feel mentally underpins our eating habits. Eating feelings, celebratory meals out, food rewards etc. By being balanced and mindful around food will help us all stay on track.

I know that if I don’t keep on it by setting goals, logging, calorie counting, utilising time restricted eating, and eating a mostly Mediterranean style diet I would gain month on month. Diet and weight loss isn’t a one size fits all. There are so many enjoyable options. Personally If I eat a carb heavy diet I hold not only extra weight but also carry water. My whole silhouette blobs out. I also rarely drink alcohol and keep sugar to a minimum. I exercise by walking & swimming.

I’m petite in statue, have an under active thyroid (medicated) and every bit of extra weight shows. Previously I allowed myself to get obese but since dropping 20+ lbs I’m no longer in that category. I’m still working on getting my BMI into the ‘normal’ category and this is one of my goals for 2020.

The previous threads have proved wonderfully supportive and inspiring The ladies on these threads have been awesome and shared some great achievements!

Today went ok for me. Stuck to 16:8 eating between 11am-7pm and calories have ended at 1544 (I’m aiming for 1500 per day). Was going to do an exercise dvd tonight but having to work so will do it tomorrow instead

NorthernPowermouse · 02/01/2020 19:29

I managed my walk! And avoided the treats. Still annoyed with myself for not getting up early though.

Sounds like everyone else is getting on well though, well done!

FrazzledCareerWoman · 02/01/2020 19:46

Yes! Can I join? I'm on day two of tracking calories. It's so boring but it's the only way I can keep myself accountable. I lost 10kg of baby weight last year but had another 3 left to go, then Christmas happened Blush now I have 5kg to lose. I'm not trying to cut carbs as well as calories as it's too hard - just stay in a deficit and eat at least 25% protein. I work out 3-5x a week so it's just the food I need to get a handle on.

Happy new year!

Skade · 02/01/2020 20:03

Hi Busteddreams and everyone, can I join in too please? Had a realisation that 2019 was my most inactive year ever! I love walking and yoga but was doing my degree last year in a top up year so pretty much spent all year sitting at a desk what with work as well. Also I probably double my calories in boredom drinking!

Today I’ve weighed in at 207lbs, at 5’7 and 45 years old, the heaviest I’ve ever been. I want to lose 4 stone to get down to a healthy BMI and fit into my clothes again!

Plan is to go low carb, Dry January to reset my drinking habits, MFP for accountability, massively up my walking (got a 15 mile hike planned over the Purbecks on Saturday), and take up yoga again to help with my back pain. I think it will be so much easier working alongside you all so I’m glad I found you!

BustedDreams · 02/01/2020 20:04

@SunshineCake People generally do between 16:8 & 18:6. I’ve often done 17:7. I might eat my lunch at 12:30 but sometimes as late as 14:00 and my last meal no later than 19:00 (not often that late, usually only when eating out). There are no hard and fast rules with Intermittent Fasting If unsure how to start, perhaps try just having your regular meals at meal times and omit all snacking, especially after your last meal of the day. That might be enough to feel a benefit because ultimately the weight loss effects are dictated by the quality & quantity of the food you eat. Hope this helps.

@WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa that sounds very painful 😖

@Galvantula Happy New Year. Lovely to ‘see’ you. Reducing BMI is a great goal!

@SheepSocks 🌟👍 well done! Keep it up Grin

@MaryBoBary Pinch of Nom The Blood Sugar Diet Both these sites have fab family friendly recipes.

@Weekday28 great start!

@fallfallfall sorry to hear you’re disappointed, hopefully better news tomorrow.

Kitchen cleaned & closed. Drinking sparkling water and feel great. Not hungry, nicely satiated.

Enjoy your evenings.

This morning started so well I had two poached eggs on a slice of toast but then met up with my mum for an unplanned lunch date. Had some sweetcorn fritters which when i looked it up was approx 650 calories but then my OH was on dinner duty and cooked a chicken and chorizo pasta so way over my 1400 calories today.

Meeting my sister for lunch tomorrow so tomorrow will probably be a bad day too but I do have a PT tomorrow night. Monday and work can't come fast enough. I need my normal routines to stop all the rich and heavy foods!!

BustedDreams · 02/01/2020 20:18

Cross posted with some ladies.

@Karcheer it’s great you fitted a run in and goat cheese salad sounds rather delicious. Don’t beat yourself up about a few chocolates ... can you put the tin out of site? Might help if temptation starts getting the better of you.

@Gilbert82 perhaps your exercise/movement will have offset the extra calories.

@NorthernPowermouse great progress!

@FrazzledCareerWoman Happy Ne Year & welcome. Sounds like you’ve a workable plan sorted and you know your weaknesses. Knowing your devil is part of the battle.

@Skade you’ve come to the right place. The ladies here are really supportive and helpful. You’ll fit right in!

I've stuck to it today and mostly felt really good but was really hungry late afternoon/early evening. I think I need to look at what I'm eating to make sure it's filling enough to keep me going. Or perhaps my body is just so shocked to be denied the constant meals and snacks it became used to over Christmas!

MotherOfLittlePeople · 02/01/2020 21:21

Stuck to plan all day, managed a walk with my two little ones. Not long enough really but better than nothing until eldest is back in nursery.

Can I ask how much water you all drink a day?
I'm drinking between 2.5 litres and 3.5 litres of water as well as 3 pepsi max cans and worried thats to much? I do vape so that causes me dry mouth a bit.

Galvantula · 02/01/2020 21:26

I ate ok today, under calorie goal... then played the dance game that Santa brought the kids on the Wii with them until I hurt.

Then i also finished some of the rather nice handmade fudge my friend sent me. Xmas Blush

Oh well at least my step count was over 12000 with all the dancing 😁

FrazzledCareerWoman · 02/01/2020 22:03

Thanks @busteddreamsI've always felt disheartened in the past when tracking but I'm trying to change my mindset that as long as I log it it doesn't matter if I go a few calories over, that's not a licence to give up and binge. And trying to be v strict with logging everything.
Half the time I eat cos I'm bored, or for a treat.
Craft IPA, and dark choc hob nobs, are my weaknesses!

As a side note does anyone use a Fitbit and sync the app together with MFP? If I enter exercise in MFP it comes up in the Fitbit app but if my Fitbit detects exercise or I log exercise in the Fitbit app it won't then sync back to MFP. As a result despite loads of walking today I had 0 exercise calories showing in MFP, really annoying

Intake (1200 goal)
Yesterday 1197
Today 1672 but offset at least 300 walking

FrazzledCareerWoman · 02/01/2020 22:04

Fitbit tells me 700 of walking but these things always overestimate burn..

FrazzledCareerWoman · 02/01/2020 22:06

@winecheesesleep make sure you're eating enough protein or supplement with a shake - it's really helps to keep you full. I have same afternoon hunger though and just try to drink lots of herbal tea

RunningNinja79 · 02/01/2020 22:09

I found today really tough. Green Tea is wrank. Will keep at it for now. I was also really hungry, managed to hold off till 11 though.

Went for my first swim in years today (well without the kids anyway - you can't exactly swim properly when you are accompanied by young children). Only for half an hour, but burned 200 calories in that time. Will stay for longer next time. This evening was just about going.

SunshineCake · 02/01/2020 22:10

I feel I've done well today. I started eating at 12.45 after a very busy morning and stopped at 8.15pm. I feel I've made good choices with two "treats" and also portion size was good. Dinner was 1/2 a jacket potato, no butter, 1/2 a saucer of Mediterranean veg, 2 tsp of tuna mayo with sweet corn and I put the cheese back as remembered not lactose free. While cooking dinner I baked cauliflower cheese for lunch tomorrow but I will have to have a tablet before as it's not lactose free cheese sauce. Really hoping for a same as today weight or even a bit off. Walked 11000+ steps as that was what I was up to half way through my dog's second walk of the day.

Thank you @MrsJonesAndMe, so is ^ what I did, right ?

Good luck for tomorrow @fallfallfall.

SunshineCake · 02/01/2020 22:13

Thank you @BustedDreams I didn't refresh so didn't see there was a whole new page. That helps a lot. I can stop the snacking. I think that will be easier if I eat a decent lunch.

RubySlippers77 · 02/01/2020 22:39

@FrazzledCareerWoman I gave up on MFP for much the same reason! Couldn't get it to sync with my Fitbit no matter what I did Angry contacted both companies and they each blamed the other. I'm actually pretty fed up with Fitbit now anyway, when my Charge 2 gives up the ghost I won't bother getting another, just go for a cheapo alternative.

Hoping to start my weight loss challenge properly on Monday when the DC are back at school Grin

milliefiori · 02/01/2020 23:36

Not great today, as I had planned to have no sugar at all in Jan but had a stressful day and am already doing Dry January, so ended up eating a bar of Christmas nougat and two chocolates. But until then, was OK, I think:

B: 2 very thin slices of sourdough toast with marmite, coffee
L: 2 bowls of home made artichoke soup, water
D: 1 and a half stuffed peppers (stuffed with brown rice, black beans, leek, carrot, mushrooms, celery and topped with flaked almond and low fat cheddar, steamed green beans.
one AF lager.
I'm pretty sure even with the sweets that comes in at around 1,800 cals so no loss but no gain either.

Selfsettling3 · 03/01/2020 00:33

Day1 was not great, not helped by finally finding an edible dairy free cheese. Day2 was going a bit better until I started to feel sorry for them self and so treated myself to biscuits. I need to find myself some new non food treats.

Foreverlexicon · 03/01/2020 05:13

My win for yesterday is forgetting breakfast and having to buy some at work and going to greggs and getting yoghurt not pastry!

Today;
B - cereal bar and banana
L - cabbage and mince casserole
Snacks - grapes
D - don’t know, will be at the girlfriends.

I’ll be awol for a couple of days as away for gf’s birthday and we’re having some fancy meals so it’s going to be a splurge but that’s okay.

fallfallfall · 03/01/2020 05:44

well i used that disappointment to walk faster (kept pace with 6'2" dh), walked more 14,000 steps and intermittently ran 5 laps (two of which were consecutive). took part of my supper and tucked it back in the fridge. added on another 10 minutes on the elliptical (as my january apple watch challenge is 1590 minutes of exercise this month).
deleted the yazio app and TRIED to add MFP back on (no luck today, log in error after error). i will try again tomorrow.
i will loose the necessary weight.
bedtime here, it's snowing slow and steady.

BustedDreams · 03/01/2020 06:36

Good Morning & Happy Friday All

@MotherOfLittlePeople There is a guide somewhere... here it is How Much Water if you scroll down to the bottom of the page there is a water calculator. The professionals do advocate for drinking enough water and keeping hydrated (but not too more either) I aim to drink around 2ltrs, but don’t always manage it. Apparently we also gain water from all the fresh foods we eat. It also depends on the climate and how active you are.

@Galvantula go you, dancing queen Grin I love a boogie myself but I’m not as energetic as I was. Congrats on the 12,000 steps 👏👏 👏

@FrazzledCareerWoman I used a FitBit for about 10 years, since their inception until 2019. A bit of a sore point as I received a burn to my wrist from the Versa. Fitbits customer service was dreadful and it took me months to get reimbursed. In answer to your question syncing became an ever increasing problem with the devices themselves as well as syncing with other apps. My Fitbit charge refused to sync after 6 months, hence a paid upgrade to Versa. My favourite device was the Fitbit One. Counted steps and how many flights of stairs etc. It was so small and discreet and I used to clip it to my bra. Last over 6 years that device. I think as the devices have got to complex for their own good tbh. I miss tracking movement, I might get a simple step counter.

@RunningNinja79 I agree about Green Tea. There is a compound in it that always makes me feel nauseous, hence no longer drink it.

@SunshineCake 👏👏👏🌟 Well done! No apologies needed lovie.

@RubySlippers77 great to have you on board.

@milliefiori you’ll find some days go better than others. Although I’d say your day wasn’t a total right off. In the main you’ve eaten good nutritious food. They key to success is learning to roll with (what you perceive) as a bad day and not becoming so despondent that you fall totally of the wagon. You’ve identified one of your triggers to eating your feelings as stress. Are there any strategies you can implement at those times so you’re not reaching for the chocolate. I know it’s hard to resist as stress makes the cravings more intense. The pattern of behaviour needs to change so instead of reaching for the chocolate do 10 star jumps (or other on the spot activity) then have a glass of water, wait 20 minutes before reaching for the chocolate... mostly the craving will have gone. My appetite reduces on activity. I know it’s easier said than done.

We are going away with friends this weekend to a spa hotel. Plenty of swimming & walking planned. Hopefully the food on offer will be nutritious with it being a spa. I rarely drink alcohol but usually one or two are thrust into my hand when away with friends (I’m not being passive on accepting this but all things considered I go with the flow). Nonetheless I do control what I actually drink as I feel so ill on alcohol, so I’ll only have a few sips.

Setting off driving after a lunch of home made soup. I’ll choose a fish or chicken dish with salad or vegetables for later. Apple, celery, carrot chopped into a small bag along with a few nuts if I need something later.

I’ll have to bank the Daily Home Yoga by Adrienne until I return. Great heads up anyway! Loved yesterday’s!

Morning!

Sounds like a good day @SunshineCake. I tend to eat 9:30-5:30 because that fits in with my day.

Have a lovely time @busteddreams. You deserve it!

To everyone struggling, keep going. The overall result will be better than not doing anything which would only make things get more and more out of control. Check in later x

@Foreverlexicon Greggs sells yoghurt ... well I never. Well done on swerving their utterly delicious but dreadfully naughty pasties 👏👏👏
Enjoy your weekend, have fun!

@fallfallfall you are so motivated and on it every single day, it’s inspiring. To keep up with tall husband is some going. Remind me where you are again ... I thought Australia but now you’ve said it’s snowing. (I love a bit of snow, my garden looks tidier covered in the white stuff Grin)
