Give up sugar with me!

Calixtine · 17/06/2019 20:01

I’m completely hooked on sugar and desperately want rid of it! Anyone else?

I have a history of compulsive eating (under and over) and although I’ve made huge strides with food generally, I feel like sugar is the one thing I still have a really toxic relationship with. Chocolate and cake are my heroin!

I’m not looking to give up carbs or naturally-occurring sugars (in fruit, etc). I’m not even looking to lose weight. I just want to ditch those totally nutritionally void processed sweet treats. Completely. I’ve tried to reduce/moderate and it just does not work for me.

I’d love some GUS buddies if anyone else is thinking about it!

Hi' Rosey Grin How did you cope in the States ?

RoseyPeas · 11/08/2019 21:55

Hi @ppeatfruit I wrote reply and it got lost somehow!
I did quite well overall, somewhat surprising myself. I knew it was only for a finite time, and because a lot of the junk food was unfamiliar, it didn't call to me so much.
Also I kept telling myself that when I'm off sugar I feel much more peaceful around food (extra important on family holiday Grin).
And I know that even a small amount makes it more likely that I'll give in on subsequent days.
I'm actually finding it harder back in the UK with all the familiar triggers and the feeling that it's forever now Shock
Still eating fruit but not on an empty stomach - hope to train myself out of having it at the end of meal (eventually)

ppeatfruit · 12/08/2019 09:01

I 'lost' a reply to you too Grin. I eat my fruit for breakfast; I make a seasonal fruit smoothie with a whole grated lemon, ground linseeds and almonds for creaminess, it stops that raising of blood sugar levels that just juice brings. Also it's very healthy!!!!!

ppeatfruit · 12/08/2019 09:08

I was also going to say that I liked Prue Leith's comment on eating an extra delightful dish on GBBO, she said that it was worth the calories, she doesn't usually say that.

The food often looks better than it tastes, it's a mental attitude.

Kaykay06 · 12/08/2019 09:17

I did this at the end of last year over Christmas into February then met my now boyfriend and fell off the wagon with all the eating out we’ve done (I had lost a good bit of weight and felt great) so I’ve put on over a stone feel disgusting and am tired and sluggish and quite grumpy so new me starts today.

I stopped before and after a few days it didn’t occur to me to eat cake etc I didn’t crave it etc we get big boxes of cake/chocolates etc at work so always available. So back on it sensible eating too smaller portions etc

ppeatfruit · 13/08/2019 09:20

kaykay That really was brave to go sugar free THROUGH Christmas!! I don't like the cake and mincepies (belly ache on a plate for me !) I do make an SF Xmas pudding, with some molasses not sugar, but living here In Fr. the chox are really amazing !!

RoseyPeas · 15/08/2019 10:18

I seem to keep losing posts Confused but just wanted to say kaykay that is brilliant to do it over Xmas!
I have been off sugar (with some tiny lapses) for 7 weeks today! And in that time I am down 14lbs! Halo So why is it that today I want to eat a massive bowl of cornflakes? Really really craving them Shock Angry

ppeatfruit · 15/08/2019 12:18

YAAAAY Flowers Grin Grin well done Rosey !!!!! I had a lapse yesterday, dh had bought some lovely chocolate wafer type biscuits ( I wish he bloody wouldn't!! ) They're very light, non gluten BUT I had 4, oops Grin back on today though. The thought of my teeth keeps me on it!!! I have root canal work at the end of Aug!!!!

He's away atm so I use the opportunity to clear out the cupboards. Big mistake!!!

RoseyPeas · 15/08/2019 12:30

@ppeat is that clearing out the cupboards by eating it all? So very satisfying Grin

ppeatfruit · 15/08/2019 13:00

Grin Ha ha ha Grin Some of it was a moth's bedroom Shock It'd be better if ALL of the sugary stuff was Grin

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 15/08/2019 19:16

Hello, jumping on here as I think I’ve binged my way to type 2 diabetes and I’m getting blood tests done soon.

I’m wretchedly fed up of binge eating sugar. A TYPICAL day means I’ll have

  • at least 2 Sainsbury’s Mars bar things
  • two coconut macaroons
  • pudding of ice cream or frozen yoghurt or something

I can clear 500g of fruit and nut and not blink.

Today I had some bad news and wiped those macaroons out. I am on the verge of going to Lidl for a tub of ice cream.

@Huntlybyelection I have the Allen Carr book “Good Sugar Bad Sugar” and it just didn’t stick.

Do you have that one or is there any other one?

Who else has managed to successfully kick the habit?

I quit smoking with an Allen Carr workshop day and I absolutely LOVED smoking. I don’t have the funds nor proximity for one about sugar.

Huntlybyelection · 16/08/2019 00:26

Hello!
I've had a lapse over the last fortnight. Away on holiday and eaten cakes and sweets. And chocolate. I powered my way through 5 biscuits today and realised I was at the top of that slippery slope of sugar bingeing.

So back off it from tomorrow.

@PaulHollywoodsSexGut I'll have a look for my book, I think it's "the easyway to give up sugar" rather than the one you mentioned. It was only £4/5 on Amazon. It clicked with me like the smoking one did.

RoseyPeas · 16/08/2019 08:58

There must be something in the water at the moment, because yesterday I celebrated 7 weeks sugar-free with a bar of dairy milk and 2 ice creams ShockShock
It was open in the fridge and had been there for a week, so for some reason I decided to have a square and once I had the taste I kept going back until it was all gone. And then looked around for another fix Smile

No reason - although the previous day someone told me that sugar free isn't sustainable long term.

So I am back on it today, as I really can't let myself spiral into a sugar binge.
I am trying to tell myself that this is a small blip in a lifestyle which makes me feel so much more peaceful around food. I don't like constantly grazing and looking around for my next fix.
It helps to know that there are others also getting back to sugar free today

ppeatfruit · 16/08/2019 09:11

Oh blimey I hope I haven't started this !!!!! Iam telling myself that this is a small blip .... It's a mental attitude that we CAN change

it's so interesting because just the MENTION of chocolate gets to me. I only used to eat the best plain!

But if you look at Paul Mackenna's "I can Make You Thin" It really helps with cravings and HOW we eat. For example Rosey if you ate your choc. REALLY slowly, chewing it , tasting it properly. You would find it difficult to eat so much . It does work .

RoseyPeas · 18/08/2019 08:58

Yep it definitely your fault @ppeatfruit
Grin
I'm struggling to get back in track - I have eaten sugar for 3 days now (although a lot less yesterday).

It does confirm to me that once I start I really have very little self control when it comes to sugar. Angry

Am aiming for low sugar (rather than none) today, so that I stop the crazy feeling that I've broken my diet a bit, so I might as well really break it Blush

How's everyone else doing?

ppeatfruit · 18/08/2019 10:48

It's not your fault though, it's in every effing thing!! I get fed up of reading the labels of even organic "healthy' foods with sugar and sweeteners in them. So i'm cooking my own mostly.

I think of going sugar free as one in the eye for the major manufacturers, I'm not buying their over sweetened rubbish (esp those disgusting brown fizzy syrup drinks that they make such huge profits out of !!!)

Can you tell that I HATE Cxkx and Pepxi I always have though. I banned them from the house when the dcs were little! (apart from parties when I bought M & S's own make!!)

ppeatfruit · 19/08/2019 12:41

Rosey I'll pm you.

Itsallpointless · 19/08/2019 18:16

After 8 weeks of eating very little sugar, I have today consumed a WHOLE bag of Haribo fantastics.

Now would this make me feel rough? I felt so fatigued this afternoonSad

I don't intend to repeat this either way, but just wondered.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 19/08/2019 19:40

Of course @Itsallpointless

That’s a massive amount of sugar for your body to process all at once after a period of being sugar free.

My sympathies x

Itsallpointless · 19/08/2019 22:41

Thank you paul, At least I can see the difference!

ppeatfruit · 20/08/2019 10:06

I've lost 2 dress sizes Grin I don't weigh so I didn't realise I'd put on so much weight! My skin looks better, It is because i've literally cut out ALL sweeteners\sugar. I have a large hot drink after meals because that's when I crave sweet things!

ppeatfruit · 27/08/2019 17:40

I was wondering how the OP is doing.

I'm off line now for a few weeks, keep it up everyone! Good luck!

EmmaStone · 29/08/2019 11:57

Hi Everyone

Checking in now I'm back from holidays (Italian gelato, say no more). I'm a complete sugar addict, and have noticed clothes getting a leetle too tight for my liking. We came home on Monday, I brought home a bag of Italian biscuits for work, so had half of one on Tuesday, then got home and DD had baked cookies, so didn't want her to feel bad, and had a bite of one. Nothing yesterday, and all good so far today.

I am drinking sugar free squash though, so not perfect, but I find I drink more as squash than with plain water. Maybe next week I'll cut it out too...

My plan is to only have the sweets/biscuits/cake etc when it would seem weird or rude to refuse (so eating dinner at someone's house and they've made pudding, definitely will eat it, but someone brings in chocs/sweets after their holiday - happening A LOT in the office at the moment), won't eat it. I've found chewing gum helps tide me over a craving (after lunch and mid-afternoon are my tricky periods, plus in the evening after dinner).

Hoping it goes smoothly. So far it's actually been easier than I thought, but it's very very early days...

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 29/08/2019 12:30

I’m not even reporting how ridiculous this month has become so see you in September.

Huntlybyelection · 29/08/2019 14:44

Yo!
So I'm drawing a line under August. I've managed to avoid sweets and chocolates and biscuits mostly but made aporox 20 chocolate biscuits on sunday and have eaten approx 16 of them. So clearly still not able to moderate myself after eating more sugar than before.

It's a work in progress.
