Give up sugar with me!

Calixtine · 17/06/2019 20:01

I’m completely hooked on sugar and desperately want rid of it! Anyone else?

I have a history of compulsive eating (under and over) and although I’ve made huge strides with food generally, I feel like sugar is the one thing I still have a really toxic relationship with. Chocolate and cake are my heroin!

I’m not looking to give up carbs or naturally-occurring sugars (in fruit, etc). I’m not even looking to lose weight. I just want to ditch those totally nutritionally void processed sweet treats. Completely. I’ve tried to reduce/moderate and it just does not work for me.

I’d love some GUS buddies if anyone else is thinking about it!

If you remind yourself that the Americans and their EXTREMELY high sugar intake are amongst the unhealthiest people in the world. I remember one of HughFW's programmes in which he discovered that the most popular/addictive food is one with high sugar, high fat and wheat in i!

You'd not break though, just go back on it when you're away from temptation or when you feel stronger Grin. That's what a do at Xmas because I follow a fairly rigorous way of eating most of the time! The sugar free is one step higher !!

I do feel much better without sugar I'm sleeping much better.

ppeatfruit · 15/07/2019 09:28

That's what I do at Xmas!!! Silly me Blush

ppeatfruit · 15/07/2019 13:52

I'm off line now for a couple of weeks. good luck everyone ! I'm taking my lunch and snax (nuts and seeds) with me (a long train journey) so I'm not tempted to buy some shxx !

Good luck btw!

Huntlybyelection · 15/07/2019 21:23

I've been eating some bits if giant toblerone. But have not succumbed to binging. I don't want to, and in questioning why I'm eating the toblerone too...

I am much more aware of what I am eating and I will be back on the no sugar train in the next day or two once I've finished the toblerone

Good luck people - knowing I'm not on my own is helping me!

RoseyPeas · 16/07/2019 02:48

@Huntlybyelection
Well done for managing to have a little sugar and not go crazy!
I also had a tiny amount of sugar last night as we went out to a nice restaurant and I wanted to make the most of it.
It also helps me a bit to know that others are doing it too. Good luck people!

RoseyPeas · 16/07/2019 05:15

Eeek! Little morsels of sugar keep finding their way into my diet!
A little bit of sweet dressing and a tiny bit of a cookie today. I'm not including the banana and half kilo of blueberries, as they count as healthy Grin

Cantdoright1 · 20/07/2019 18:44

Hi, how is everyone doing?
Ive been sugar free since March 6th. Been doing Ok but put on weight as i keep eating too many savoury snacks. Just had a really stressful holiday and i ate 2 spoonfuls of vanilla icecream, 3 plain biscuits and 1 chunk of chocolate. None of it tasted as nice as i anticipated at all. However 4 days later im still thinking about having more. I havent caved yet but its like all the urges have started again. Thats bonkers after so many months!

I did also give up fizzy drinks and on holiday i had a can of diet coke and really thought it was disgusting. Its taken 4 attempts and 2 years but i think im finally over the fizz! I still crave opening a can of drink. I wish they did squash in a can. Its definitely an emotional thing rather than a craving for the drink.

Hope your all doing well.

nanbread · 21/07/2019 23:53

Hi I really want to do this too. I got massive sugar cravings while BFing DC1 6 years ago and just never stopped eating cake, chocolate and sweets on a daily basis. Also a big fan of crisps... I've started putting on quite a bit of weight since finishing with BFing DC2, and I also want to stop for health and teeth reasons.

RoseyPeas · 22/07/2019 06:40

@Cantdoright1 wow that's impressive to have been off sugar for so long - well done! I'm doing ok, not brilliantly, but trying to make reasonable decisions while visiting relatives.
Have had a few small amounts of sugar, and I agree that I also find that a little bit starts off cravings.

RoseyPeas · 27/07/2019 07:14

Well I'm back from holidays and feeling pleased with myself as I ate a lot less sugar than usual and it seems to have really helped me stay in control of my appetite.
I also didn't gain any weight ShockGrin

Huntlybyelection · 28/07/2019 10:37

Fab stuff Rosy Peas

I'm back on no sugar. Although I've eaten some ice cream. But I've not binged after and been able to stop eating when I want to.

I also turned down some Easter egg chocolate. DH found it in a cupboard - an unopened egg! Previously I would have scarfed it all back. But I didn't want any so had none. Hurrah!

RoseyPeas · 30/07/2019 20:09

Hello huntly.
Well done for getting back to being sugar free!
I'm finding it a bit harder to resist now that I'm back in my usual environment. We didn't have much junk food in fridge on holiday so no temptation!
But now that I'm home, I'm struggling. I have eaten quite a lot of fruit in the last few days, and carbs and a mini milk for no good reason!

I can blame it on being tired from travelling.and the anticlimax of being back to usual life, the novelty having worn off and the fact that I'm alone more and no longer have family around all the time to keep me accountable Blush

I need to keep reminding myself that when I don't have sugar,I feel much more peaceful around food, I don't have that constant feeling of needing to eat.

Feels like it could all go wrong from here, but I'm going to fight it Halo Early night for me I think!

HMArsey · 30/07/2019 20:12

Can I join please?
I’m following the IQS rules, so I’m still having carbs, just not sugar. I was an absolute sugar addict, whole packets of biscuits in one go etc. It’s been 10 days now, and I’m still hanging in there!

ppeatfruit · 31/07/2019 13:11

How's it going everyone? I'm back on line now ( I always take a break when i go to England to look after my DM and visit children etc.).

I'm not doing too badly, having some tofu yoghurt and molasses if I fancy a bit of indulgence! I'm just amazed how much better I FEEL , I sleep better and look better!

HMArsey · 02/08/2019 06:46

I’m not weighing myself so I don’t know how I’m doing from a progress point of view, but I’m still on the wagon!

ppeatfruit · 02/08/2019 08:34

But are your clothes fitting better and your skin looking better HM ? it sounds like you may be detoxing. I never weigh and can tell by my jeans and the full length mirror!

HMArsey · 02/08/2019 08:43

Hmm, hard to tell, not sure how much difference I should notice after all of 12 days! Grin I did feel a bit trimmer the other day, but I can't say I've noticed my clothes feeling different. I'm lucky in that my skin is normally pretty good.

I've got a lot of weight to lose, ideally 4 - 5 stones. Since I've given up sugar I feel like I'm eating much more like a 'normal' person, I wonder how long it will be before I look significantly different?

You look in a full length mirror?! Shock

ppeatfruit · 02/08/2019 08:50

Yes but at my heaviest I had 3 stone to lose which I've maintained (with the odd blip of course!!).

Remember that bread has sugar in it.

I lost the weight with Paul Mackenna (i Can Make You Thin) Stupid title I just like being slim not THIN Grin it's good because there's no CC . It reeducates our bodies in an intelligent way.

HMArsey · 02/08/2019 09:00

That's brill, to maintain a 3 stone loss. I'd be delighted with that.

Yes, I'm cutting back on bread as a side project, but my main focus is following the I Quit Sugar rules of less than 5% sugar in everything (hence no fruit, juice etc). I do feel like I've cracked the addiction aspect, but I'm far too scared to put it to the test with a bite of a Mars bar!

ppeatfruit · 02/08/2019 09:32

You would spit it out Grin I only ever used to eat a couple of pieces of Green and Blacks ginger dark choc. I noticed I could do without them when I got dreadful toothache. So i carried on, I tried some after a couple of weeks and it wasn't nice!! Paul Mack. suggests we all eat slowly, really tasting and enjoying the food , I used to suck chocolate! If you did that you wouldn't be able to eat it!!

I do still eat seasonal organic fruit though. For the fibre and vitamins. On an empty stomach which is great for the digestion.

RoseyPeas · 10/08/2019 23:06

Oh gosh help!
I've been doing so well without sugar ( with occasional tiny lapses) and have lost 13lbs in 6 weeks (I have a lot to lose).

I have survived lots of situations in which I would normally eat a lot of sugar - family holiday, rows with DP, day-to-day life with 3 teens Grin without resorting to sugar.

But now I am back in my childhood home, with extended family, and I am surrounded by junk food. Literally everywhere I turn there are bowls of sweets, plates of cakes. I'm the last person up now and I feel I'm going to give in.
(Also, no-one has noticed my weight loss. Hmm )
How do I survive the next week? I know I will feel so proud of I do. I have brought massive fruit salad and cream to contribute to the family feast.
But I do feel like I might want to try other people's offerings.

I suppose there are 2 problems really. One is wanting to eat socially and celebrate all the family being together, and the other is the anti-social (secret) eating that I have been doing for 35 years, and which I realise that I do from habit and and an automatic response to being surrounded by junk food.

I haven't told anyone that I'm not eating sugar, and I don't really want to be quizzed about it.

The evil one keeps telling me that just one tunnocks wafer won't harm me...

Sicario · 10/08/2019 23:30

It's the retraining that's hard - saying no to that first bite that leads to eating the whole lot. I'm an absolute NO to cakes, biscuits, crappy sweets, cheap chocolate and fizzy drinks. Fell off the wagon a few times but got back on and haven't eaten sugar shite for quite some time.

I still have the tiniest quarter teaspoon of sugar in first morning coffee because I love it like that. Occasional bit of dark chocolate - the Lindt 70% is good because it's not very sweet but gives a really satisfying chocolate hit.

It's worth it. I've lost about 10lbs in the last 6 months without actually doing anything. Skin better too. Sugar is bad.

ppeatfruit · 11/08/2019 11:09

Hello again! I've managed quite well so far, I also remembered high salt foods encourage the sugar cravings. So i'm cutting back on salt too ! I now make a large mint and green tea in the morning and a chicory coffee sustitute (it sounds weird but it's quite nice) in the evening, straight after meals which helps a lot. I sympathise about the social side Rosey I did have a lovely dark chocolate pudding at our one lunch out for many weeks! But I decided not to give into the cravings the next day and got through it Grin

I'm now working on dh !!!! Give me luck!!!! he's a real hedonist!!!!

RoseyPeas · 11/08/2019 12:20

Hello ppeat!
That's really interesting about salty food, will bear that in mind.
I survived last night (just posting here helped clarify my feelings).

Current plan is to choose one dessert and have a few bites. And then watch myself like crazy in the following days. Grin
