Give up sugar with me!

Calixtine · 17/06/2019 20:01

I’m completely hooked on sugar and desperately want rid of it! Anyone else?

I have a history of compulsive eating (under and over) and although I’ve made huge strides with food generally, I feel like sugar is the one thing I still have a really toxic relationship with. Chocolate and cake are my heroin!

I’m not looking to give up carbs or naturally-occurring sugars (in fruit, etc). I’m not even looking to lose weight. I just want to ditch those totally nutritionally void processed sweet treats. Completely. I’ve tried to reduce/moderate and it just does not work for me.

I’d love some GUS buddies if anyone else is thinking about it!

If anyone is interested, you can get the Allen Carr book on audible - I'm listening to it while walking dog. Free month if you are new!
I did well yesterday - best day I've had with eating in ages. I did have a few sugar free sweets. And much less diet cxke than normal. I've replaced it with sugar free squash. Feeling quite positive at the mo.

How's everyone else doing?

RoseyPeas · 29/06/2019 11:19

@ppeatfruit I'm looking forward to the under eye bags going!! Mine are enormous!
How long did it take for them to reduce?

ppeatfruit · 29/06/2019 20:21

Well it happened when I was literally not eating much of anything at all (my tooth was too painful) So after about 4 days I suppose, I did notice when I had some chocolate recently (it was only dark but it had some sugar) that they got a bit bigger the next day!!!!! so I've stopped it now and they haven't disappeared but are less!!

I'm eating very nearly nothing but fruit (which is soo lovely here at the moment) so my eyes look clearer too. So it's not the sugar in fruit that causes the bags!!!

RoseyPeas · 30/06/2019 08:58

Excellent! I'm on day 3 today so I'm really looking forward to tomorrow when I wake up looking dewy eyed and gorgeous Grin

ppeatfruit · 30/06/2019 09:32

Yes I hate the TM look too Grin I do sometimes put wrung out make up removal pads of cool water that have a drop of lavender, t tree or peppermint ess. oil on them on my eyes in the morning for 5 mins or so to help!

Itsallpointless · 30/06/2019 09:44

Can I join you? I stopped eating cakes/sweets/biscuits on Monday. Anything else I eat I read the label for actual sugar content. Yesterday I had a mouthful of a mars bar and one chewy sweet, I cannot believe I stopped myself eating more.

I have a terrible relationship with food. When I’m unhappy or feeling low, I reach for the crap, though even when I’m not I still eat the wrong stuff.

I looked at what it was that made me eat those things, and I have realised it’s mind over matter. I have already lost about 3-4lbs just cutting that out. I feel better, much better.

I intend to start dieting seriously, but keep on cutting the crap out, however, I won’t deny myself anything, but just moderate it.

If I can do this anyone can, I have little willpowerSad

ppeatfruit · 30/06/2019 10:03

Well I'm not the OP but I'm sure all are welcome (I hope so otherwise I gatecrashed too Grin ). I sounds like you'll possibly get some detox effects! A bit of or a lot of a headache? I'm getting a few but just carrying on! No PK's.

RoseyPeas · 30/06/2019 21:46

@ppeatfruit What are PKs? Am beginning to feel grumpy and craving something sweet. Bah! I know it's to be expected.
Rest of family ate doughnuts this eveningAngry

ppeatfruit · 01/07/2019 08:48

No pain killers! Oh that's mean of them Grin the thing with the ess. oil of mint is it has a sweetness but is totally sugar free (unlike mint or other flavoured cordials). eat cherries and or peaches there's so much lovely fruit about at the moment you can deal with the cravings then.

ppeatfruit · 01/07/2019 08:51

I make a fab, seasonal fruit smoothie with ground almonds and linseeds and with half unsweetened fruit juice\ water and whole lemon for the vit C for breakfast.

RoseyPeas · 03/07/2019 07:45

@ppeatfruit
Amazingly I seem to have much clearer eyes and skin today and eye bags a bit less puffy! Not that I didn't believe you Grin
It's day 7 for me so I guess I had to detox a bit longer!

I bought some peppermint essence yesterday to give me something different to drink. Today is the first day that I haven't seen the scales go down, which is a bit of a shame. But generally I feel less crazy around food, which I hope will help keep me on the straight and narrow today Smile

How's everyone else doing?

ppeatfruit · 03/07/2019 09:40

That's brilliant Rosey ! Do you have much weight to lose? I have good ideas for that too Grin

I find I need to stick more to them as I get older. Food combining is the best for health IMO a E.

RoseyPeas · 05/07/2019 10:10

@ppeatfruit
Yes, I have a lot to lose. I'm currently 113kg and should be no more than 71 kg. But I feel it's unrealistic so just aiming to get under 100kg would be fab.
Is food combining the thing where you don't eat protein and carbs together?

ppeatfruit · 05/07/2019 11:49

Yes and it bloody works! I started doing it for my health, it includes eating fruit on an empty stomach not dessert. I dropped a stone without trying I didn't need to lose weight at the time!!

You'll get there with the no sugar thing definitely!!

ppeatfruit · 05/07/2019 11:52

Oh by the way don't google it because it's extreme on there. it put dh off. (which is a shame because he REALLY needs to be on it,!) whenever he remembers it he loses weight

I just follow the basics still but as I've got older it's taking more concentration to just maintain Grin.

RoseyPeas · 06/07/2019 08:26

Thanks @ppeatfruit I'm not eating much fruit at the moment but when I do reintroduce it I'll bear that in mind.
How long have you been food combining?

ppeatfruit · 06/07/2019 09:13

Woah a long time about 25 years I suppose Grin My dgm had terribly rheumaticky hands, like claws and when I started getting pains in my fingers I decided there was no way I'd end up like her! So I studied eating for health, and Food Combining seemed a good one to try. I have no pains or health problems at all (apart from some varicose veins which began in my 20s) .

ppeatfruit · 13/07/2019 10:56

How is everyone getting on? I must admit I'm up and down , had some tinned peas yesterday and they have with sugar in them Ohoh! It's funny how just a little starts the cravings again !!

Huntlybyelection · 13/07/2019 15:21

I was on holiday this week, ate some chocolate and an ice cream. Managed to stop at only what I wanted to eat rather than it starting a binge.

Back to no sugar entirely this week.

Although I have a massive bar of toblerone from my parents so maybe after that.

I don't have the same cravings any more though!

RoseyPeas · 13/07/2019 15:43

I'm on holiday in the states at the moment, and doing surprisingly well! Been eating out a lot and haveve managed to avoid sugar. Possibly had a little in salad dressings but doesn't seem to be so much that it makes me crave it constantly.

However tonight we are off to a meal with extended family, who are cooking for us. I don't really know them so when they asked about dietary restrictions I just said that we eat everything!!

I'm hoping that one meal won't send me back to being a sugar monster! Anyone got experience of getting one fix after a couple of weeks off it? Wink

ppeatfruit · 14/07/2019 11:01

I'm back on (off ) it again, the fact that my skin and eyes looked so much better is keeping me on the no sugar bandwagon, oh and the flatness of my stomach!!

Blimey Rosey Congratulations for staying off sugar In the States!!!! I still have nightmares about the size of ONE slice of cheesecake in NY. The server (who could hardly walk she was so obese) said "You gotta have the sauce with it". it was enough for 3 normal sized people. Grin Grin

ppeatfruit · 14/07/2019 11:04

Huntley Well done!!! I too tried one piece of the Green and Blacks ginger choc. I used to love but it tasted unpleasant [result!!!!]

RoseyPeas · 14/07/2019 16:02

@ppeatfruit Well I did eat some sugar last night so I'm aware that the next few days might be make or break for me.

@Huntlybyelection good to hear that someone else is in exactly the same boat as me. I'll be interested to hear how you get on.

I have been having a lot of salads and meat with creamy sauces. I honestly haven't felt the crazy drive to eat that I do when I have sugar (although I might just be full from the enormous salads Wink.
So in that way it has actually been a more enjoyable holiday for me - no having to sneak off to get extra sugar, which, I'm ashamed to admit, is something I have frequently done.

But a part of me thinks that life is boring without sugar. A couple of weeks ago I'd have been delighted to be going out for breakfast, looking forward to pancakes and waffles and all sorts of sugary treats. And now, I'm less excited. I imagine this is how alcoholics might feel about going to socialize in a pub. But I don't want to spoil it for the rest of the family, so I need to make it about the experience of being in the diner with my family rather than the food.

So my mantra is "it's boring but better" GrinGrin

Cecilandsnail · 14/07/2019 17:58

Can I join? I'm starting tomorrow. I've always loved chocolate but been th3 type to have a few squares and put the bar back in the cupboard, but the last few months I'm out of control! I crave chocolatey desserts SO badly after meals and once I start on a bar of chocolate that's it...I'm in binge land. I've just realised I'm absolutely addicted! Have also gained half a stone so I know kicking sugar would sort me out as I otherwise eat very healthily. Will touch base tomorrow!

RoseyPeas · 14/07/2019 21:49

Hi Cecil!
That sounds very familiar - I am also a huge fan of chocolate Blush

I feel so much better when I'm off sugar. It's been confirmed to me today by eating a fairly moderate amount of sugar last night and today I am ravenous only a couple of hours after a large breakfastAngry
Am going to try very hard to stay well away from it from now on.

How's everyone else doing? And how do experienced sugar-free converts deal with holidays, birthdays, Xmas etc?
