I really hope nobody will mind if I start a thread about Binge Eating Disorder here. It is making me so so miserable - I feel like I’m living half a life and it’s taking me away from my children and husband. I’m hoping that if I can record my thoughts and actions here then perhaps it will help me to make better choices or help me understand why I am doing this to myself. Please feel free to ignore me/give me a hand hold or give me some advice. I’m very interested to hear from fellow sufferers and people who’ve managed to break free from this eating disorder.

Just had a huge binge. Feel awful. Ah. Tomorrow is another day.

I think there is a tiredness aspect LittleMissPlump - it does make sense doesn't it, because we tend to be mentally weaker when we're tired.

LittleMissPlump · 29/11/2018 22:31

Yes DeeStopia tomorrow is a new start. Don’t be too hard on yourself. I

The only way to stop binging is to stop dieting or even thinking about dieting. Any form of restricted eating or planing to restrict your eating will cause BED! Tell yourself you can eat what you want when you want and all foods lose there hold over you.

BusterGonad · 30/11/2018 14:17

I've eaten 2 treat foods today, a chocolate custard pastry and 50g of tolblerone but I'm not going to beat myself up about it because then I'm heading to the danger zone and am likely to binge, I've got to see it as this, I've eaten a lot less than I usually would if I HAD BINGED!

Dina82 · 30/11/2018 15:08

Hi. I was hoping to join this thread. I too and in recovery from Bing eating disorder / mild bulimia.

To the poster who said the husband doesn't get it I have this same problem and have made a decision not to discuss it with him anymore. It's really frustrating.

One thing that has been helping me is to eat 3 meals a day regardless of if im hungry or not.No diet mentality aloud.
I try not snack and drink water/ tea in between.
I'm also trying super hard not to binge on sweet foods and am avoiding them as it's a huge trigger. Plz feel free look at a thread I started as posters have given lots of tips.

I'm unsure how to forward the thread on my mobile device but it's under aibu

It's sooo refreshing to know we are not alone. It's such a lonely illness. It's like living another life in my head that only I know about.

BusterGonad · 30/11/2018 15:24

I used to be 4 stone lighter and ate only clean foods and hardly any carbs. I stuck it out for about a year or two then suddenly went the other way and got fat (5 or more, stone weight gain) I'm now slightly over weight but only by a few pounds. I struggle to eat normally because I'm so used to restricting. If I can carry on eating like I am now I think I'll get to my happy weight which is about 1 1/2 stone lighter than I am. It's only the binging keeping me at this weight!

BusterGonad · 30/11/2018 15:37

Just for reference I'm a size 14/16 (big boobs) at 5'9. My happy size is a 12 but I'll be really pleased just to be a 14 that isn't snug!

Hairytangerine · 30/11/2018 18:05

I just identify with everything that has been said. I am either perfect to the point of extreme dieting or I am sod it. This week has been sod it. For some reason fruit really triggers me. One orange and I’m off!

I’m off work at present and just eating and eating. I feel like I have tried everything and no way out and I think this is because I really don’t want to stop for some reason, binging is fixing something in me. What I don’t know.

I am aiming to recommence low carb again tomorrow it may end up in a pile of vanilla slices but maybe not.

What is everyone up to this weekend?

I am out with husband this evening for a meal, he never knows what to expect feast or famine. It will be a feast so three courses loads of drinks.

LittleMissPlump · 30/11/2018 22:02

Well am looking forward to the weekend to start doing some Christmas bits and bobs with my DC. Haven’t binged today yay and got a call from a nutritionist that I’d contacted ages ago about putting together a healthier eating plan. I was completely honest with her on the phone and explained that I’m really struggling with binge eating - (this is quite a big thing for me to admit it to someone in real life) and she’s asked me to complete a brutally honest food diary for the next few days including how I feel after eating both mentally and physically. I’m unsure of what advice she’ll have and if I’ll actually be able to follow it but I feel that it might be a step in the right direction. My ridiculous eating really has to stop as it’s directly impacting on my family. Hope everyone has a lovely weekend without restricting or binging. I’ll be sure to check out your thread Dina82 - thanks for the heads up.

Hey everyone. I have gone to the other extreme after yesterday's binge. Had one packet of lentil curls and a banana today. Caught myself in the mirror and my ribs are prominent, in the front and back. I wish I could be normal, you know? Went with DP and DC to Maccies tonight, but had nothing. I find it really difficult to explain to DP that it's not about food, it's about control.

@DeeStopia and @LittleMissPlump and all of the disordered eaters on this thread...
Today is going to be a good day!
I can feel it!

LittleMissPlump · 01/12/2018 11:12

Yes Deadline today is going to be good- I’ve just gone for a short and slow run but the main thing is I did it! Off to the cinema this avo to watch the new grinch film which I’m really looking forward to but do I have popcorn or not?! The restrictive voice is saying no but we will see who wins when we get there! Have a good afternoon all! Smile

OP posts:
BusterGonad · 01/12/2018 11:15

Have popcorn, think to yourself, What would a normal person do? A normal person would eat popcorn and not feel guilty! Do not deprive yourself!

Milliy · 01/12/2018 12:05

If you want popcorn have it. It's when you deprive yourself and have inner battles that the bingeing wins

Dina82 · 01/12/2018 12:47

Before getting popcorn, Ask yourself are you hungry first? How long before did u have lunch?

LittleMissPlump · 02/12/2018 20:23

Didn’t have the popcorn in the end, honestly just didn’t feel hungry but then when the kids were in bed I had 2 packs of chocolate coins and 1/2 pack of jelly beans which isn’t awful I guess but I’d got really stressed getting my youngest into bed. I should have gone to bed myself- that’s when I’m most likely to succumb to a binge. Anyway went for another run today and have eaten when I was hungry including some shortbread biscuits which I usually don’t let myself eat unless I’m mid binge. Perhaps the more I eat food like that with my family and not alone then maybe I’ll knock this whole binge eating on its head. Am off to bed early now as have to be up early for work tomorrow. Hope everyone has had a good weekend.

Thanks Milliy I will definitely check that out, I appreciate you posting. Had my weekly Tuesday Evening Binge but didn’t consume so much and weirdly felt absolutely no guilt, shame or ill effects today which is odd as usually i suffer from extreme abdominal pain, headaches and fatigue following a binge. I saw the nutritionist today and was completely honest with her about my eating habits and problematic relationship with food. She looked at my food diary and asked about the physical symptoms I experience when eating normal amounts of food and when binge eating. She explained the FODMAP diet and said that it might help me to try eating low fodmap foods to see if I have any food intolerances but she said that if I did, she would be watching me closely to ensure I wasn’t using the diet as a way of restricting my eating. It was a lot to take in so I’m going to think about it this week. I’ve had a really productive day which is odd as usually I get nothing done on Wednesdays and feel like shit all day! Anyway off for an early night, no cravings tonight thank goodness!

Not sure I agree with your nutritionist MissPlump. Eating disorders (which binge eating is) needs dealing with in a totally non food related way as food isn't the issue but the way we view it. FODMAP was originally designed for irritable bowel syndrome. If you get bad tummy issues after bingeing I would consider that normal. I've done this way of eating at one point for medical reasons and lost weight quickly because of the food you have to remove from your life. It's quite strict which in itself can cause issues for dieters who restrict and binge.

Milliy · 05/12/2018 22:18

MissPlump what about seeing a psychotherapist. They are recommended for people with disordered eating and eating disorders. Someone I know had bulimia for many years and sought help and is now recovered. She is an advocate of eating what you want when your hungry and it has turned her life around.

BusterGonad · 06/12/2018 02:14

I was feeling unwell yesterday and had a four finger KitKat and 100g dark chocolate and marzipan bar BUT I didn't carry on binging and ate a normal dinner. I've woken up today and I feel NOTMAL and have no desire to carry on! I think I'm finally making headway. What's helped for me is eating lots of fruit and telling myself I can eat chocolate when I want, there is no need for me to eat it like it's my last chance to ever eat it! Iyswim!

LittleMissPlump · 06/12/2018 06:27

I think your right about the counselling Milliy and I have seen at least 2 therapists. The most recent was last year and she was recommended by the BEAT eating disorder charity but I couldn’t continue with it after she started banging on about trusting the angels around me to help resist the cravings. So I’m reluctant to start throwing my money down the drain again! The reason I went to see a nutritionist is because I get ibs symptoms on a daily basis which has led me restricting my diet considerably in a bid to reduce my discomfort. This has in turn caused my binge eating to ramp up. I’d like to find out if I am intolerant to anything whilst trying to eat 3 meals and 2 snacks a day. I found it very interesting that I am eating a lot of high fodmap foods everyday so hopefully I will feel much better physically if I follow this plan. Who knows though - I feel at a loss about what to do really.

Milliy · 06/12/2018 11:26

O goodness LitttleMiss wheat an awful therapist. Did you report her? Try choosing one off the BACP Website next time. They are regulated to an extent. Ibs is not nice . I ended up on an elimination diet for mine which worked and then reintroduced foods slowly. But yes, would easily trigger bingeing. It's a hard one isn't it trying to sort out your bingeing. If you diet you binge. It's the deprivation that would trigger it for me.

LittleMissPlump · 07/12/2018 06:28

2 days non binging, have been following the low fodmap way of eating without restricting the amount of food if you see what I mean. I’ve had 2 blissful days without any pain or awful distended bloating after eating and I’ve made sure that I don’t feel hungry. I’ve also had very few urges to binge which is just lovely! I’m going shopping today to stock up with more low fodmap foods. Happy Friday!
