Want to interact with others and get support/motivation for getting healthier and active, and in the process losing weight. But I absolutely don't want to hear any "diet culture", calorie counting or unhealthy disordered eating promotion. Surely I can't be the only one? Sometimes it seems like every thread I click on is just full of upsetting, unhelpful comments that sound like they could have been lifted from a thinspo website.

Hi, can I join? I need something like this. I have yo-yo'd between low carb, slimming world, the blood sugar diet (800 cals a day!) and am now currently the heaviest I have ever been. I need to get rid of my diet mentality because the second I'm on a diet I crave all the things I'm not 'allowed', fall off the wagon and then think 'sod it I'll be good tomorrow' and that day takes two weeks to arrive.

I have joined a new gym and worked out how to fit it into my schedule (before work or at lunch time) and I am going to eat healthy meals and try and completely stop snacking. I have pinpointed my weak times (walking to the station after work, past lots of shops where I can too easily buy something to scoff on my 50 min commute where I can dispose of the evidence wrappers before I get home) and hope being aware of this will help me avoid it. I'm thinking of chewing gym while walking to put me off buying more food.

I do want to use some of the principles I learned from Slimming World - mainly that with each meal you should have at least 1/3 of your plate as just veg/salad which naturally keeps more carby/calorie-dense food portions down. But I hate their low fat / sweetener stance so will be only using full fat, natural food.

Portion control I need to be aware of too.

I'd like to be healthier, stronger, leaner - and have more energy and feel brighter.

argumentativefeminist · 26/07/2018 12:40

Welcome Aromatic! 👋 Would it help to pack a snack in the morning specifically to eat on your way home? So you can choose something a bit healthier and plan it a bit more, and hopefully avoid temptation. It tends to work for me!

Thanks argumentative that's a good idea!

argumentativefeminist · 26/07/2018 15:06

Checking in with the afternoon crowd! Had a really lovely Mexican Chicken pasta thing from Greggs for lunch and an orange juice - much better for me than the cheesey bean bake, doughnut and Coke I would have had not that long ago.

Going for a swim tonight. I normally do 20 minutes very fast with music, but today I'm just not feeling up to it so I'm going to try for 40 minutes slower with some peace and quiet.

I have somehow managed to stop eating the crap . Mainly because I did The Whole Life challenge (which I highly recommend) and once you stop and see the weight loss it incentivises you

Carry Nuts and banana are your BEST friend

My challenge is Wine
I can avoid at home but one sniff of the bar maids apron .....

So I get that what’s easy for one is hard for another . We all have our comforts

How do people feel about dark choc ? I have 2 day but .... I really prefer it to cakes and crap !!

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 26/07/2018 15:46

Even a slow gentle 40 swim is great exercise !

Fuck me its HOT today

argumentativefeminist · 26/07/2018 15:50

I'm not usually a major fan of dark choc, stop, but I found some really nice dark chocolate and orange bars in Aldi which I'm really enjoying.

Swimming on hold for now as dog isn't very well again and I dont want to leave her. I need to get better at learning to get over it when I've not had a very healthy/exercisey day for whatever reason, and not feeling bad about it.

OP posts:
Oscha · 26/07/2018 21:10

Dark chocolate is the best!

Sorry your dog’s unwell AF. (Does anyone else feel weird typing AF? Am forgetting who I’m talking to 😆) Don’t beat yourself up over lighter exercise days-remember how important it is to rest so your muscles can repair themselves!

I ran 8K today which is the furthest I’ve ever gone, so am really pleased with that. Won’t be doing any exercise till Saturday’s park run now!

argumentativefeminist · 26/07/2018 21:53

Thank you Oscha, that makes me feel a lot better! 💕 that's amazing work, well done! Have a lovely rest day tomorrow 🌟

OP posts:
CantankerousCamel · 26/07/2018 23:38

AF don’t feel bad about not training. Just feel amazing when you do train.

Osha well done on the run, 8k is pretty marvellous, when you hit 10k you can pretty much say you can run any distance, just takes a tiny bit more conditioning.

I woke up feeling crappy this morning so vegged ouf with the kids and slept when the baby napped

Still managed to smash our two sports massages and a crossfit session this evening so feeling chuffed and tired.

Going to lay down now and see what tomorrow brings.

DH is working a half day, we have loads to sort for the boys birthday party and then we are off to arundel on Sunday

Plus holiday mon-Fri at centre parcs, we have an awesome few weeks lined up!

argumentativefeminist · 27/07/2018 07:50

Thank you Camel, sounds like you did well yesterday and have some great things coming up!

I was going to try to make up for the 40 minutes swimming I missed last night by doing extra cardio today, until I realised that was literally a ridiculous idea and I'm working towards goals which aren't always attainable due to the random things that happen in life. So probably going to be some yoga later and a dog walk for today. Much more manageable.

CantankerousCamel · 27/07/2018 08:15

My middliest one has a high temp today and is feeling really unwell. I’ve given him calpol but he’s so unhappy :(

So lots of cuddles and relaxing and no morning CrossFit for me. I think I’ll fit it in tonight instead

argumentativefeminist · 27/07/2018 08:19

Sorry to hear that Camel, I hope he feels better soon. Must be awful having a temperature in this heat 😔 hopefully you can fit Crossfit in later, but if not, like you were saying yesterday, it's no big deal. I'm trying to think "wow it's really good that I achieved that today" rather than "it's so annoying/upsetting that I didn't do that today".

OP posts:
CantankerousCamel · 27/07/2018 08:30

I’ve got a weekend of busy stuff, the boys joint birthday party tomorrow, a visit to arundel after that and then we are going to centre parcs

Being a complete geek I have actually managed to fit CrossFit into my week off (including coming home midweek) but I do want to complete another session this week if I can. The summer holidays are so difficult to work things in and it is important to do something

argumentativefeminist · 27/07/2018 11:48

I think I'm going to take a break from "working out" for a bit. My mental health has really suffered from the falling out with my dad, my sister's anxiety being bad and my dog being poorly. Its annoying to break the habit at nearly a month, when it was just starting to kick in, but I feel so crap and this weather isn't helping. For next week (and then I'm on holiday for a week!) I'm just going to move my body when I want, in ways that make it feel nice, for as long as I want, rather than trying to do as much as I physically can for as long as I can. More restorative yoga, walks, stretches etc. than cardio videos and strength stuff. Hopefully this will keep me in the right mindset and after a proper relax on holiday I'll be able to come back to the more active stuff!

OP posts:
CantankerousCamel · 27/07/2018 12:11

If that’s what makes sense for you, AF then absolutely do it. I strongly believe it’s the moving more day to day that really gets the weight off, though I find that is a result of training.

If I don’t train, my mental health suffers hugely so I can well understand that for some the opposite is true x

AgathaTabithaBagatha · 27/07/2018 14:21

Good afternoon all. Feeling sweaty, knackered and very pre-menstrual today. No inclination to do anything, I'm with you on that one, AF.

Will eat own body weigh in junk then go home and slob out on the sofa with my beloveds.

argumentativefeminist · 27/07/2018 15:50

Exactly how I'm feeling Agatha! Have just put everything on hold for the mo until I feel a bit better from whatever it is that's making me feel crap at the mo. Still got my 5 a day before dinner time though. 😊 about to do some restorative yoga with my sister, then maybe takeaway tonight... I can feel the takeaway atmosphere in the air, you know when nobody's planned anything and you dont have any food but nobody's actually suggested a Chinese yet? 😂

CantankerousCamel · 27/07/2018 16:35

Well I’ve finally finished work! Family holiday is upon us. Oh but hang on, first thing my husband did was have a winge because I wanted to get some nice booze tonight (maybe £10 worth?)

So I said I just won’t drink tonight and he launched into an almighty strop about ‘how I was behaving’ so I simply turned the car around and came home. We should be at Waitrose now, quite happy for the first time in weeks being able to buy the bits we need and instead we are sat in different rooms knowing full well we need to get the stuff we haven’t purchased. He was going mental because he needs new shoes and I’ve ruined everything. I just really don’t see why I should be in a car with someone shouting at me or putting me down for wanting to buy a drink.

Might well book into CrossFit just to have somewhere else to go

argumentativefeminist · 27/07/2018 17:07

Sorry to hear that Camel, sounds so frustrating 😔 could you go to Crossfit and get the bits you need from the shops on your way home? That way it's all done and you get some time on your own.

We have guests for the weekend and I'm mildly worried about just pigging out as I know they will be.

My DH has already started offering everyone apple pie and custard. I have declined for now, as I'm just after dinner but it's already a worry. Our guests are definitely eat drink and be merry types and my DH is like that too, so I imagine there will be a lot of nice food and wine consumed.

Whether anyone is hungry or not!

Going to be a tricky one to navigate. I don't want to get sucked into the "deprive myself" part of the old cycle. But neither do I want to feel disgusting on Monday.

It seems I really have no idea what normal people would eat on a weekend with guests. Do they eat the apple pie? Or not? No flipping clue!

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 27/07/2018 17:44

I think we have to be kind to ourselves

AF gentle exercise and good food is what your body needs

After a good period NO exercise . Got some bad news and was too upset to swim

I am also hungover . I only had 3 Wine

Really not happy with myself and my inability to socialise without wine 😞

Tomorrow is a new day and as a minimum will manage stretches , yoga and bike

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 27/07/2018 17:45

Elspeth

I hear you !

argumentativefeminist · 27/07/2018 17:46

I eat the pie and the glass of wine and the chocolates after Elspeth! Your friends/family/other guests who presumably you like at least a bit are here to stay over, that's a mini celebration and a happy thing, so I would have a little treat or two. Pencil in some nice exercise that'll get you moving and make you happy for Monday if you're worrying.
