Gastric Bypass in 2 months

fontofnoknowledge · 18/04/2018 07:44

I would like to know if anyone on here has had a Gastric Bypass. I have jumped through all the hoops and am now just waiting for surgery date which should be in the next 8 Weeks. I would like to hear from anyone who has had a Bypass or Sleeve . (Not a band it's a very different Operation) .
It appears to be a very taboo subject on MN - (I have even felt the need to name change) and despite there being hundreds of threads on the latest diet, there is surprisingly little about the only scientifically proven longterm sustainable weight loss treatment for those with obesity or morbid obesity.
I am after any advice for the immediate post op period and the process of moving from liquids to solids and any other advice really.

No dumping yet. Although i did get sudden loose bowels yesterday (tmi) but then I've really been trying so hard to eat enough that there has been no room for sweet things. I'm going these 3 months of so will kick the sugar habit.

fontofnoknowledge · 09/05/2018 08:29

Does dumping happen with any sugar or is it just certain types of sugar ie not natural sugar found in fruit etc ? Quite difficult to avoid sugar as it's in everything these days. The 'low fat' mantra meant manufacturers were encouraged to lose the fat from food (which created the flavour) and replaced it with sweetness (sugar).. so are you guys having to read everything before you cook/eat ?

Its high sugar foods, including fruits.

You still have to make healthy choices with food following the surgery.

Sofabitch · 09/05/2018 10:11

you don't have to avoid sugar, just high sugar foods

wizzywig · 09/05/2018 12:34

What is dumping?

Sofabitch · 09/05/2018 13:32

Overview

Dumping syndrome is a condition that can develop after surgery to remove all or part of your stomach or after surgery to bypass your stomach to help you lose weight. Also called rapid gastric emptying, dumping syndrome occurs when food, especially sugar, moves from your stomach into your small bowel too quickly.

I have been given the following guideline for sugar/fat balance....

I’m generally ok with under 10 g of fat per 100

But if a drink or yoghurt is perhaps 8 or 9. I eat half
It’s horrendous. I ate some prawn crackers today and felt dreadful for an hour. Poops n all

Sofabitch · 11/05/2018 09:41

Morning. How is everyone?

Things are really good here. I'm getting a little fed up of blended food. But otherwise no real issues.

1 week until i have my 4 week review with the nurse and dietition. And more importantly can start eating more normal food!!! Also I can drop to one multivitamin a day as i can have the proper ones instead of the chewable ones.

I think all the weight gone so far is from my top half...I hope my ass shrinks soon.

Sofabitch · 12/05/2018 08:47

15kgs down.

AnythingConsidered · 12/05/2018 13:37

I'm doing well too. Went back to work this week and it was fine. Had to be organised with food & making sure I ate at the right times, but just need to get in the habit!

Weight loss is slow and steady. 1.5 stone down since the operation 4 weeks ago, which I am more than happy with.

The only thing that has happened is my bowel movement. For the last week, I have been waking up at 5am needing the bathroom. It's very annoying!

Sofabitch · 14/05/2018 18:42

1.5 stone in 4 weeks is great. I've lost about 8kgs since surgery 3 weeks ago
And 7kgs on the milk diet. So not far behind you.

I have my 4 week check up on Saturda.

fontofnoknowledge · 16/05/2018 06:57

Hey Guys,
Fantastic that this thread is still going. I am finding it really helpful to have 'real time' knowledge of what it is going to be like.

My next question (I have so many 😄) is.. now your weight loss is becoming visible, are people commenting? Are they asking 'what diet are you doing'? If so, are you being honest that you have had surgery ? (That question has come across as I want it to. )I am not wanting to suggest that any of you are dishonest- I am just trying to ascertain if you are being out there with the reality, or is it something you are choosing to keep to yourself. Bariatric surgery is still looked at disparagingly by so many people who don't know the facts - which I completely understand makes some reluctant to discuss. Just interested to know how you are dealing with 'enquiries' from those you know but not that well..

Can i join pls?
I am scheduled to have roux-en-y (bypass) WLS tomorrow on NHS.
I 've been waiting 3 years but now i'm sitting here in tears. Terrified.

Sofabitch · 17/05/2018 14:00

@ARoomSomewhere Hey. Welcome. Don't be scared. It's really not as scary as you think it is. What is scaring you the most?

No one outside my immediate friends and family have noticed. I've also really kept my surgery on the down low. I told work I was having gall bladder surgery.

I'm not sure how I feel about telling people yet. You're right in their is some shame that I couldn't just loose the weight by eating better.

Sofabitch · 17/05/2018 14:03

Thier= there!!!Blush whoops.

Also meant to add I've been wiped out most of the week with unrelated gastroenteritis caught from the children. So basically haven't eaten at all for 3 days.

4 weeks ago I was just taking my pre meds wondering what the fuck I was doing!!

ARoomSomewhere · 17/05/2018 14:09

Ok. Scared of:
a.dying during surgery or from complications after.
b.having to be readmitted for 'fixing' for some reason
I have 2 kids with SEN and am a single parent with little support.

secondarily.
I dont want to be dumping/throwing up/diahorrea and
never be able to eat small amounts of normal food again.

my bmi was 40+ and is now 39. I've lost 3st and kept it off.
but they want me to lose another 4-6st. I have apnoea. Plus mobility issues (very painful joints and probs with spine, knees, feet. hypermobile)

Im not that big. but its taken me 3yrs to lose 3st. I have a tiring live and i find i eat emotionally / without reaslising when i'm stressed.

but i love grilled steak. all kinds of salads. whole fruit and veg. I eat a great diet just way too much I like a bit of bitter chocolate. the occasional glass of fizz. will i never be able to have any of this again??
the surgeon is great but my nhs dietician just shrugs when i ask?

ARoomSomewhere · 17/05/2018 14:23

sorry bmi WAS 45 but now 39. My area takes your starting bmi.

did that by cutting cake crisps biccies etc. dont drink. dont drink sodas.
have been low carb but still a struggle to lose more than a few lbs then tend to put back on. I like the idea that WLS 'resets the clock'

But i am so worried about tomrrow i am half tempted to cancel.

ARoomSomewhere · 17/05/2018 14:25

my other worry (sorry you did ask! ... lol)

I have follwed the 14 day plan i was given but mine is just low carb and portion size so i've only lost around 4 lbs. and worry they will cancel?

Sofabitch · 17/05/2018 14:27

a.dying during surgery or from complications after.
this risk of this is super low. And even lower with lower BMI. I'm guessing you are getting it done on the NHS?

b.having to be readmitted for 'fixing' for some reason.
I mean you could be in a car accident tomorrow. The chances are low. Do you have family that can help?

I have 2 kids with SEN and am a single parent with little support.
you will need support for the first week or 2. The first week I was really incapable of anything. Can you book extra child care? Do you have something planned for them for half term? Holiday clubs etc

secondarily.
I dont want to be dumping/throwing up/diahorrea.
this only occurs if you eat the wrong foods. Apparently it's a good way to change your eating habits.

never be able to eat small amounts of normal food again.
normal foods are allowed. I have 4 weeks of liquids, 4 weeks of soft foods, then I should be able to eat a fairly normal diet. They recommend waiting 12 weeks before eating salad. I also found the pre op dietition information a bit lacking. But my booklet is really useful.

I have apnoea. Plus mobility issues (very painful joints and probs with spine, knees, feet. hypermobile)
you will notice a huge difference in these, think about how much more you'll be able to do with the children

The main difference for me is that I'm not hungry. Even the mental hunger that occurred in the first few weeks is passing. It's almost impossible to eat subconsciously anymore...it takes effort. So the emotional eating has changed dramatically. I'm finding that I want better tasting food now as I can have so little I don't want to waste it on anything bland.

But come here and keep us updated on your journey. Hopefully we can be some support. I think the first few hours are the worst. Then the first week after that. I've really been in no pain since about 10 days in. But I've been taking it fairly easy. G

Good luck tomorrow. and if you want to chat then I'm happy to distract your fears. Try to think about the positive outcomes.. of which there are many.

Sofabitch · 17/05/2018 14:31

Don't cancel. Although I have to admit to feeling exactly the same before mine. It's life changing surgery. I think its alright to be a little scared.

Also think how much work you've done to get here! That sounds fantastic. The rest will be a breeze.

What made you choose the bypass in the first place?

Sofabitch · 17/05/2018 14:33

@ARoomSomewhere if you've stuck to the pre op diet then there is no reason they will cancel. The diet is designed to shrink the liver more than anything.

I must admit I found the milk diet hard at first. But the lack of choice and food made it easier for me over 2 weeks.

ARoomSomewhere · 17/05/2018 14:34

Sofabitch THANK YOU!!!
I've had so little info from my dietician that i'm feeling really wobbly.
(as you can tell!).
Yes, NHS. I met the surgeon and he is v experienced.
I've no family no. exH will help the first week. then i'm on my own (half term, what timing! they wont go to holiday clubs. they will just have to be bored that week sadly).
I've not really prepped re special containers / protein sachets etc for when i come home (and i live in the middle of nowehre but have Amazon prime?)
what are the essentials pls?
I know i shd be sorted by now but with SATS etc this week has been awful re kids.

ARoomSomewhere · 17/05/2018 14:36

my nhs trust doesnt offer bands. surgeon said bypass has less complications than sleeve, more years tried and tested etc

but it has more dumping doesnt it???

Sofabitch · 17/05/2018 15:32

First week I lived on yogurts, and soups
