Gastric Bypass in 2 months

fontofnoknowledge · 18/04/2018 07:44

I would like to know if anyone on here has had a Gastric Bypass. I have jumped through all the hoops and am now just waiting for surgery date which should be in the next 8 Weeks. I would like to hear from anyone who has had a Bypass or Sleeve . (Not a band it's a very different Operation) .
It appears to be a very taboo subject on MN - (I have even felt the need to name change) and despite there being hundreds of threads on the latest diet, there is surprisingly little about the only scientifically proven longterm sustainable weight loss treatment for those with obesity or morbid obesity.
I am after any advice for the immediate post op period and the process of moving from liquids to solids and any other advice really.

Creampie I saw the wls mimic hormone discussed on 'the truth about obesity' last week. You sound like you know something about it. Are you able to tell us any more ?

Not really, I'm afraid.

The initial results are looking good though. They now need approval for longer term trials, which will probably be granted. It will then need to gather enough data on safety and efficacy, and then present these to the NICE committee to be considered for inclusion on the formulary, which will depend on the cost vs benefit ratio.

I think we're looking at 3-5 years

Sofabitch · 02/05/2018 16:20

i'm getting terrible terrible pain in my left shoulder today, called the hospital as i was worried, they seem to think its a common side effect, the the gastric branch of the vagus nerve gets aggravated during surgery and hurts where it does something with the C2 vertabrae.

anyway, it will pass with the inflammation apparently. I hope it hurrys up as its debilitating!!

AnythingConsidered · 02/05/2018 21:54

Oh no Sofabitch, that sounds awful. I hope it passes quickly and the pain calms down. WLS Facebook page mention gas getting trapped and being felt in the shoulder, but haven't experienced it myself.

Can't say about the proton pump inhibitors as I don't know what they are. Sorry!

QOD · 02/05/2018 22:16

As I said befor I am 7 yrs post op
I’ve done the whole drinking alcohol every night thing and then cut back.
Only sweet stuff makes me nauseous nowadays
I still strugggle. I can’t eat a lot at one time but I can eat AGAIN quite soon after I’m full

But I’m a size 15/16 not a 26 still 7 years down the line

Sofabitch · 03/05/2018 06:48

QOD. Thats great news! I'd be really happy with a 14/16.

I had gas pain in my right shoulder when I awoke from surgery. That was pretty bad but didn't last long. This is something else. But it did panic me about getting a leak and put me off wanting to eat yesterday.

But I went out last night to a comedy event! It was super fun...laughed so hard I thought my stomach would herniate...I'm still a bit paronoid abiut that ;)

I also brutally sorted through my clothes and let my friends steal the bits they wanted. I have a serious 50s dress obsession. So I'm looking forward to buying new clothes

Sofabitch · 03/05/2018 07:12

Qod. Can I just ask how is the excess skin for you?

GuildedLily · 03/05/2018 09:16

Hi everyone! I'm so glad to have found you again, somehow I'd accidentally hidden the thread.

No time to read now as my three year old is careering around the living room. Placemarking till tonight so I don't lose you again!

fontofnoknowledge · 03/05/2018 18:01

Hey GuildedLilly good to have you back. It's great that our positive thread about the reality of WLS has kept going and the negative posters full of story's of 'people they know who put on ten stone after a Bypass ' have decided to leave us be !

Sofabitch how is your shoulder? Has the pain improved ?

OP posts:
Sofabitch · 03/05/2018 18:07

Welcome back! Are you still excited for the surgery.

Shoulder still hurts but its definitely better, with a step back to more pureed foods and slowing right down with eating. I do find the waiting a minute between spoonfuls very hard.

Just had a call with the dietition. They seem to call every week. I think i need to start cooking more! I've been relying on soups. But mostly she is happy. Did say i should try to eat 6 times so breakfast...mid morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, then something in the evening. But I'm really struggling to fit it in!

Oh and also need to stop weoghing myself so much...but i camt help that at the moment. Its crazy seeing the weight just fall off.

fontofnoknowledge · 03/05/2018 21:41

How much have you lost since surgery Sofa ?

OP posts:
Sofabitch · 03/05/2018 21:45

I lost 6k on the 2 weeks of milk diet. And I've lost 5 kilos in the 2 weeks post surgery. So 11 kilos in 4 weeks now. Seems insane, but I am barely hitting 500 cals most days.

Magpiemagpie · 03/05/2018 22:13

It’s the gas that they use to pump you up ( if that’s makes sense ) my ne felt like I had disclated my shoulder it’s was Very very painful but it goes after a while

Magpiemagpie · 03/05/2018 22:17

I had mine done abroad £3500 best thing I ever did
My weight has stayed stable by 1 or 2 pounds
I wasn’t massively overweight which is why I had it done abroad but I had alway struggles with my weight fro 20 plus years

wizzywig · 03/05/2018 22:36

So glad i found this thread. Really interesting reading

AnythingConsidered · 04/05/2018 15:27

Today, I ate Pate (10g protein) with 4 x Melba Toast crackers. It was so nice to eat something crunchy!!

Sofabitch · 04/05/2018 17:05

I'm looking forward to stage 2!!

I had greek yoghurt for breakfast ..an ikea ice cream for lunch Blush and some blended chicken korma for dinner 1. I've got some soup for later. But that's still only 4 eating occasions!

The shoulder pain seems to be settling down a little bit

fontofnoknowledge · 04/05/2018 22:32

Hi Magpiemagpie welcome to our thread. Would you mind telling us how long ago you had your op and how much you have lost. ?

Most of us who have done it or are hoping to have surgery are not doing it because we can't diet but because we can't sustain the loss. Surgery appears to be the only longterm solution. I think it's the sustainability over a number of years that attracts us most.

Magpiemagpie · 05/05/2018 15:59

My weight has stayed stable give or take 2lbs since I was 4-5 months post op
I had mine done abroad in Europe’s as the BMI criteria is lower than the uk .the uk just said go to weightwatchers lol

I wasn’t massively overweight 4 stone or so but I lost that within 4 months and it’s never come back on
I could probably do with losing another 1/2 stone but most people plateau at qbout 1/2 stone - 1stone above there goal weight

I have several friends and family members who have all had surgery in the last 5 years and we have all plateaued at this level but between us we have lost over 100 stones😂
None of us have put the weight back on either
I don’t have any loose skin either

Sofabitch · 06/05/2018 18:32

Hey all. Just checking in really. I think this has almost become a diary.

Healing is great. No pain in the abdomen area at all now. So bending etc is all fine. Shoulder pain is almost gone. Only flares up if i push imehat i eat a little (shouldn't have eaten that yorkshire pudding earlier) but on the whole I'm sticking to liquid foods.

Today I had
150mls protein yoghurt
Half a tub of cottage cheese
Bacon and lentil soup (200mls) Yorkshire pudding.

I have a little bit of a headache I think that the hot weather is making fluids a little trickier. I Can no longer guzzle a large glass of water so need to be more on top of drinking more frequently.

Was quite hard smelling all the Bbqs as I walked down the street earlier thinking that I'll never be able to scoff down loads of bbq food again.

Its strange now that I feel physically fine, the mental battle becomes the harder one...knowing I can't eat things I want to. But at least I can't cheat myself anymore.

AnythingConsidered · 07/05/2018 13:13

That's great news about the pain going Sofa

I know exactly what you mean about the mental battle, particularly this weekend - it's been so hard to 'want' bbq food, ice cream and lovely sugary drinks in this weather - even though my body is not feeling it at all!

I had a slice of brown toast yesterday, when i really shouldn't have. I got half way through and then felt tightness in my cheat for about 3 hours afterwards & couldn't drink. Was soooo not worth it!

I read on one of the WLS boards today about someone who answered a person about feeling guilty about what they had eaten at a BBQ. She said we need ro remember wouls you would normally have eaten - loads of sausages, burgers, kebabs, crisps, rolls, cheese, alcohol etc at a BBQ. So eating a couple of burgers or sausages really isnt that bad. I think i am going to remember that in the coming months!

fontofnoknowledge · 07/05/2018 13:44

Hi All, Thanks for the updates.. just think this time year sofabitch and AnythingConsidered, you will be able to just get up and put on clothes you actually like. I used to love the chance to wear a summer dress but now I just look like a ship in full sail. ⛵️..
Thanks for your post Magpiemagpie I have 5 stone to lose so your post has filled me full of hope !

Rudgie47 · 07/05/2018 14:11

A lady I know had the bypass and she was really big beforehand, like 25-30 plus stones. I saw her on the bus on the way to work and shes now a size 12 probably about 11 stones. Unbelievable difference, she said it had worked really well for her and that she thought the bypass was much better than a band.

Sofabitch · 07/05/2018 16:42

Ah I've been lucky I guess in that I've never cared and always worn what I liked anyway...including summer dresses.

I think now its hot the desire to eat is even further reduced! Today.is tricky just getting enough fluids in is leaving me feeling bloated.

My husband bought me a sugary ice lolly earlier...and I just couldnt face it. At least ice cream contains protwin and counts as a meal. The lolly just felt a waste of space!

I've lost 13kgs now so its slowed down a little. But still pretty impressive in 3 weeks.

AnythingConsidered · 07/05/2018 22:03

That is amazing weight loss Sofa
I made some homemade ice lollys/creams using milk & flavoured protein powder - was delicious!!

I found on Fri & Sat that a homemade, no added sugar, blackcurrant squash ice lolly helped me get more liquids in. Am terrified of dumping though... have you had any symptoms yet?

Rudgie as a Gastric band to Bypass converter, I completely agree with your friend. The Bypass is so very different to the Band, but feels so much better.
