I really really tried but after 48 hours, a no carb diet was making me so ratty I gave up

I had a sandwich.

Within 20 minutes I felt calm, warm, and not sweaty any more, and my stomach ache went away.

How can something like that be a bad thing? How can carbs be bad when lack of them makes you feel so shitty?

I suppose you could say the same about herion, but still.

I am really really cross now. I wanted to do this no carb thing to lose some weight, and now I have spoiled it, but I didn't know what else to do, I was so bad tempered, it was awful!

meant to say, I wasn't hungry either, just shakey and ratty!

I'm the same, keep trying but can't give up the carbs. I LOVE them!

moondog · 20/04/2007 20:10

Go for whole grains. Then you get carbs but good ones.

Yes - it affects me like that too to begin with (I do this every year about this time - to get into summer wardrobe..)- if yoyu can hang in there it gets better. A few weeks ago I was so ratty with everyone and everything - was even snapping at my customers(I work in sales), and like you a dose of carbs calmed me. I also found it difficult to sleep and had very vivd dreams when I did sleep. After a few days it got better and i stopped craving the carbs. A real boost when I got into the slinky dress i am wearing to a wedding in a few weeks. Don't beat yourself about the sarny - good luck!

moondog · 20/04/2007 20:13

Porridge or homemade muesli fopr brekkie.

Wholegrain bread or crackers for lunch

Rice, quinoa beans or lentils for dinner.

colditz · 20/04/2007 20:14

Fio, vodka is not a carbohydrate, so I really don't feel it is an issue. Besides, what else could I scramble my eggs in?

Moondag, will that work? because a low carb diet is generally quite high fat, so if you add carbs, any carbs, to it, won't it just result in an extremely calorific diet, therefore no weight loss>?

GI diet is very good nd healthy and quite easy to slip into everyday life. The carbs you eat are wholegrains such as brown pasta and rice and bread instead of white. Puff has lost about 4 or 5 stone on this, and she said it was brilliant. have a read of This then if you are interested do a google for loads of tips and recipes.

colditz · 20/04/2007 20:17

should add, today was the day I gave up fruit.

Give it a few weeks and you'll be fine. If you were trying to cut calories at the same time you would be struggling. It does get better.

moondog · 20/04/2007 20:19

I don't hold with faddy diets Colditz.
I go for a lowish fat diet with reasonable amounts of protein, all whole grains and massive amounts of fruit & veg (probably 10 portions a day.)

I eat a lot,am never hungry and have no problems with weight. A staedy 10 stone and 5 foot 8.

colditz · 20/04/2007 20:21

hmm

It seems I have a choice. No carbs and the shakes, or whole grain carbs and IBS.

bugger.

I know. Total poof. Hypochondriac too, it doesn't help when you think every dizzy bit is an impending stroke.

I might try Slimming World, but that just seems like it would give me a headache trying to understand the diet itself!

colditz · 20/04/2007 20:27

some salami and cheese and lettuce for breakfast

them tomato, mushroom and ham stirfry for lunch

then I was going to have steak and salad for tea but I broke out and had a cheese sandwich (engulfed) instead

oliveoil · 20/04/2007 20:28

diets do not work

if you ban something you want it

I have never been on a diet and am 5'9 and 9 stone 5

I eat very well but stuff my face with a cake if I want it

just not all the time

carbs give you energy so surely if you don't eat them you will feel rubbish??

zippitippitoes · 20/04/2007 20:31

i think the gi style of eating is good

oats and grains fruit for breakfast

salad for lunch and sensible meal for dinner

plenty of exercise to get metabolism going

and it's permanent, flexible, no feeling hungry

KnayedFrot · 20/04/2007 20:32

I cut out wheat for non weight loss reasons and immediately lost about 5lbs.

IMO this was because I could nto eat biscuits, cake, sarnies, toast or big piles of pasta.

I now eat oat based breakfast cereal or a cereal bar, a mainly protein / veg lucnh eg a salad with an omelette / feta cheese / cold meat, then have a small portion of rice, wheat-free pasta, baked sweet potato etc as part of my main meal. Snacks are fruit, wheat free crackers & hoummous, etc.

I have not cut down on fat at all, and eaten loads of chocolate oevr Easter, but I am probably having slightly less fat because I'm not making myslef hot buttered toast every 5 minutes (was one of my weaknesses).

I feel so mcuh better for it.

colditz · 20/04/2007 20:32

But I have never been on a diet either and am far too heavy. It's not dieting that has made me fat, it's eating crap. And now I am determined to sort it out!

But I hate being hungry (poof) and hate feeling crappy (again, poof) so I am wondering if there is an alternative, and if not, which one is better, feeling hungry or feeling crap.

god, I have no staying power.
