I really really tried but after 48 hours, a no carb diet was making me so ratty I gave up

I had a sandwich.

Within 20 minutes I felt calm, warm, and not sweaty any more, and my stomach ache went away.

How can something like that be a bad thing? How can carbs be bad when lack of them makes you feel so shitty?

I suppose you could say the same about herion, but still.

I am really really cross now. I wanted to do this no carb thing to lose some weight, and now I have spoiled it, but I didn't know what else to do, I was so bad tempered, it was awful!

When I gave up gluten (which I medically had to do,) I felt just like you described for around 2 weeks, and then I felt heaps better.

If you get IBS, need to lose some weight, and feel like this when giving up bread I would seriously consider giving up gluten for a couple of weeks (but not other carbs). Your body is very good at craving and having withdrawal symptoms from things that are not good for it.

You could find your IBS is improved too.

do you like cooking?

colditz · 20/04/2007 20:33

ZTT it does sound great, but it sounds almost too good to work. How much do you eat? Is there weighing involved?

colditz · 20/04/2007 20:35

I like cooking, yes. Not great at it, but I do enjoy it. Would have to cook after 7 though, as ds2 doesn't allow me to put him down from 4 - 7.

there was a book serialised in the Times that India Knight did

she was a heifer (she said so herslef, I am not being mean!) and she lost tons

kind of GI I think

Amazon it

full of really nice recipes, we made some Thai fish cakes and dh is a glutton and didn't say they were 'diet' or anything

zippitippitoes · 20/04/2007 20:38

no weighing or calculating

i have lost just over a stone maybe slightly more since just before christmas

I think exercise is the key for speeding up metabolism

and the oaty breakfast because low gi means it lasts

plenty of fruit and veg

no alcohol either in my case

oliveoil · 20/04/2007 20:40

hahahah, some bad reviews but also some good ones

Ugly Betty is on in a bit so I am off to prepare my booze and snacks in readiness

will pop back in the ads

xx

colditz · 20/04/2007 20:42

Ok. Thank you all very much. I will try the low gi thing.

Does that mean I can eat brown rice?

OP posts:
oliveoil · 20/04/2007 20:45

If I was going to cut out carbs i would make sure that the cupboards did not have any contraband in them

throw out (or eat this weekend) any banned stuff and start again next week

colditz · 20/04/2007 20:45

have given serious thought to the India Knight one too!

colditz · 20/04/2007 20:47

I can't though, I have a 1 and 4 year old to feed. They would not be happy with no pasta, bread, cereal, noodles or potato, so it has to be in the house, really.

oh bummer

I think her book works round families though iirc

she has children

I am going now

It's supposed to be the atkins diet. It's not supposed to be low fat.

it was 1 slice of salami and 1 slice of cheese, not a coronary worth.

zippitippitoes · 20/04/2007 23:05

yes brown rice..I eat quite a bit of that

Right. New day new start.

Screw the ultra low carb and high fat diet, it's crap.

I am going to eat fruit and salads. I know that won't make me feel crappy.

Banana and yoghurt for breakfast!

colditz, havent read anything other than your op on this thread, but i remember a couple of days ago you said you wanted to lose lots of weight?

as someone who is currently doing atkins, im going to say a few things.
it works. but you have to do it for a minimum of two weeks induction,, and thereafter change the way you eat. ive been doing it since the end of january and now eat LOADS of vegetables, and some fruit.
low carb is about changing your attitude to eating. its not about guzzling lots of fat.

induction is the hard part. the first four or five days are hell. but its a case of breaking an addiction. i am now horrified at just how much processed food, processed carbohydrates i consumed. i never go hungry nowadays, even though i am supposedly on a diet. i just eat different types of food. and most of it is natural, fresh stuff.

so, my advice would be, if you really want to lose the weight. stick with atkins for the first two weeks. i promise you that after the first three days you will begin to feel a lot better, have more energy etc.

stitch · 21/04/2007 23:37

i eat lots of chicken, lots of veg. lots of eggs. lots of meat, but no longer stuff like salami, as its just more processed than i like. but mostly i eat more fish and salad.
i dont eat processedstuff. its liberating.

Well after 6 weeks of 'eating normally' I feel fat and flabby and basically crap. So I'm back on a low carb diet for a few months. I'm really looking forward to getting control of my eating again and not feeling hungry and craving junk all the time.
