Tomorrow I quit sugar

OuchBollocks · 06/08/2017 17:29

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

Thanks so much for the info and advice ouch! I paid a little extra for the upfront seat, which also came with the bonus of being allowed a handbag too. So no probs for me to volunteer to put my cabin bag in the hold; will do that Smile Thanks again.

OuchBollocks · 05/09/2017 20:16

How's everyone today?

I had a mega fry up for breakfast at 12am and not been in the least bit hungry all afternoon. Only starting to get a bit rumbly now.

I've just got to my hotel room! I've not had a bad day. Considering its 23 hours since I walked out of my front door anyway!

B- Lily's granola with Greek yoghurt and berries.

S - latte. Punnet of grapes. Punnet of cherry toms.

L - tuna sandwich (half)

D - pasta bake (ratatouille based)

D2! - half a veg curry and rice.

S - 1 chocolate from box bought for the crew (I could have had a few more, but resisted!)

Can I join this thread please. I am starting Monday 11 September of sugar free. Never done it before and complete sugar addict for as long as I can remember. Two sugars in tea, chocolate bar after every meal etc. I am now peri menopausal and my tummy area is a big problem. Reading lots of articles regarding sugar and the menopause I think now is the time I need to act, and half measures won't work for me. I am around a stone overweight and figure cutting the sugar I eat will cut out at least 300 calories a day so will hopefully lose weight too.

Can you let me know what Lily's granola consist off (presume it's not shop bought) and any hints of what to eat at the 4pm lag when I always need a sugar fix. Thank you.

Well done everyone, really good to read. I think I need to join you. Breakfast today - Jordan's clusters -20% sugar. Dc had homemade waffles (actually very little sugar) with chocolate spread Forty-Eight PERCENT SUGAR !!!! I did put peanut butter out as well but it was ignored.

I have had big struggles finding a good Muesli.
I avoid those with any kind of sweetener, but I do like dried fruit in it. The Dorset Cereals gloriously nutty one is 21% sugars though! Their simply delicious muesli has 17% (naturally occurring....) sugar too. Has anyone made their own? Although i'd chuck dried fruit in anyway and probably be in the same position (except maybe worse because i'd out more in than the manufacturers do i'm sure).

honeyroar · 06/09/2017 22:20

I think the dried fruit is the sugar culprit Msrisotto. Fruit and fibre (which I love!) is 25% sugar, whereas Bran flakes (which is the same minis fruit) is low sugar.

I'm not home, but think I've got a recipe there - I've not tried it, but will dig it out.

Cantseethewoods · 07/09/2017 04:30

Ok week for me. I went to the gym for weights 3 times and went running, so exercise really good- I'm trying not to let myself get into a "well there's no point because the operation blah blah".

Eating also reasonably good. Lots of protein and veg. A few sneaky garibaldis Go ahead biscuits at work, but it's so much better than it was. In particular I've really broken the "crappy carbs for breakfast" habit.

I think I've lost 2kg fat and gained 0.75kg muscle (muscle gain is PT's estimate) in 4 weeks, which isn't bad given that my BMI is 23.

Going to the UK this afternoon for a wedding and then onto Mumbai and Singapore next week for work and then a friend's 40th, so this will be the big test as the wheels always come off when I'm doing work travel, especially when breakfast buffets are involved.

msrisotto · 07/09/2017 08:42

Yes I agree but I was working by the rule-no added/artificial sugar. So dried fruit was ok. But I might need to rethink might'nt I? Maybe I should also go for less than 5% sugar as well.

honeyroar · 07/09/2017 13:24

Yes, I go loosely by the I Quit Sugar rules on their Facbook page. Fruit is fine as long as it is fresh - dried or juiced fruit doesn't count. Could you add fresh berries perhaps?

Cantseethewood I find breakfast buffets quite easy. I have loads of fresh fruit and yoghurt (although sometimes hard to find full fat stuff in America) and sometimes granola (but it won't be low sugar, however I leave the dry fruit in it). Then an omelette, and occasionally toast with butter and sometimes a drip or two of honey. The stuff to avoid are the pastries and muffins.

Im waiting for it to be 6am so I can go for breakfast! Yesterday I was good, I had pretty much what I listed above for breakfast, then later on had a green salad (that had a tiny bit of mozzarella in it) and two bread rolls, plus a quinoa and veg paella, which was so awful I only ate two forkfuls! Hence why I'm now starving while waiting for breakfast!

cheminotte · 07/09/2017 16:31

Avocado on toast for breakfast this morning. And 1/2 a slice with jam that ds rejected due to butter.
Is no fruit muesli with fresh fruit added an option?

CheerfulYank · 08/09/2017 11:04

Ugh.

I need to join.

OuchBollocks · 08/09/2017 12:14

So I opened the posh truffles last night.

They were far too sweet and made me feel sick ShockSad

Hi ladies, sugar addict here too!

For museli, I mix plain oats with value museli, and add pumpkin and sunflower seeds, so halving the sugar hopefully. I also like having oats, seeds and defrosted mixed summer fruits.

I'm not looking to lose weight, just want to reduce the junk...

overcome Flowers you do what you need to do to get through this, I am so sorry about your lovely MIL.

Cantseethewoods · 08/09/2017 18:10

sorry to hear that overcome. I think it's fair to say you have other priorities at the moment. Take care of yourself xx

Welcome cheerful and passthecake.

honey In theory breakfast buffets should be fine as plenty of choice but for some reason I find it really hard to resist the pastries. I did ok, but did have pancakes with berry compote. However, my main victory was not hoovering crap in the lounge before the flight and my guts have thanked me for it - haven't got the horrific long haul bloat for once.

honeyroar · 08/09/2017 23:57

Overcome, I'm really sorry. I hope you're all coping ok. This is not a time to worry about what you're eating. Xx

Can't see, well done on the lounge crap swerve!

I'm home again. I've been quite impressive on this trip. Even if the scales don't show it (I will see in the next day or two!) , my belt has gone up another notch and my uniform skirts feeling roomy (I've already gone down a size since I started). However!! We go on holiday on Tuesday, so I may let it slide a tad (not totally as we are camping, so I have some control, but where am I going to pack all this yoghurt and grapes??)

Hello to all the new faces on here. 🙂👍

honeyroar · 10/09/2017 20:13

Ouch, sorry you didn't like the truffles (but yay!). I think I know which ones they were (round pink box?) and I didn't love them either.

Overcome I hope you're doing ok at your end. Thinking of you.

I had a bit of a shock last night too. My mum has been ill on and off all summer, and last night she rang me in a panic hardly able to breathe. We ended up in an ambulance with lights and sirens rushing her to resuss in A&E for the whole night. They finally stablized her heart and breathing at 5.30 this morning. So now she's in hospital. They think it was like a giant asthma attack (she's not asthmatic). So I've not had time to eat much at all, and we will not be going on holiday on Tuesday. We might go on thurs if she's doing ok, but I'm not holding my breath.
