Tomorrow I quit sugar

OuchBollocks · 06/08/2017 17:29

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

Be nice to yourself Overcome, you've a lot going on. Aww to the puppy.🙂

honeyroar · 11/09/2017 23:23

Mum's heartbeat went back up to 195 again today for no obvious reason, and she's all weak and upset, so the holiday is off. I'm gutted about both things (obviously more about mum) and have just had 3 choccie biscuits. They weren't even nice! Pmt not helping either. Otherwise I've eaten ok, not had time to shop since I got home,

That's exactly it! I'm feeling guilty for being gutted about missing the holiday, because of course my mum is more important than a holiday!!

GoingRogue · 12/09/2017 16:12

Just hopping on to say I'm so sorry to hear about your Mum honeyroar and your MIL overcome Sad Sadly I have experience of my Mum being in hospital. She spent 2 months unstable in ICU (in and out of a coma fighting various obstacles) then 2 months on different wards. I had a 2yo at the time, and worked 3 long days, and would often feel guilty if I didn't have the energy to visit (hospital 40 min round trip away min). But when I visited I'd feel guilty for not spending the time with my toddler. Basically, you can't win.

honey sorry you've had to cancel your holiday, and you have every right to feel disappointed. I hope your Mum gets better soon Flowers

overcome how is the puppy settling in?

honeyroar · 12/09/2017 22:00

Thanks GoingRogue.

She's pretty much the same, no improvement, and they've no idea why yet. I'm sad about the holiday (but this storm is helping me feel better we're not in a caravan!) but on the flip side, at least I've got 10 days off work and am not having to decide whether I have to do a work trip or not. I've told the lady that was meant to be looking after the hens and horses to do them anyway, so that's one less thing to think about, and it might mean I can get the odd lunch or nice walk with my wonderful husband inbetween hospital runs - he's given up his holiday too without a murmur.

Anyway, I've been shopping and got a healthy houseful of food, so no need for biscuits (I'd no fruit in the house last night when I scoffed the biscuits, if I had had something healthy I might have swerved them!).

gunsandbanjos · 13/09/2017 17:01

I'm back, had a massively off plan 10 days... I need to totally cut sugar out as I can't just have a little!

Sorry to hear about relatives ill health, is your mum any better honeyroar?

honeyroar · 13/09/2017 18:05

Hello gunsandbanjos, thankfully she's a lot better today. Still not good, but not worrying me now. Although the hospital is saying she can probably come home in a couple of days, and that's worrying me a bit, as she's still v weak and wobbly even if she can breathe!

I think that sounds like a bit like strange advice from a health care professional! I'd not be able to function on that food. It may be ok for a fast day, but doesn't seem like a long term plan if you've got a lot to lose (I can't remember if you have or not).

I'd get another opinion.

GoingRogue · 13/09/2017 22:45

OvercomeByGravity I think that sounds like bonkers advice and would also get a second opinion.

lynnsara · 14/09/2017 06:52

Recently, I’ve been diagnosed with diabetes. But I’m a sugar addict. I can’t live without chocolates. I use an extra cube of sugar for every drink. The doctor warned me not to have sugar in my diet. I’ve been trying hard to avoid sugar, can you guys help me with it?

gunsandbanjos · 14/09/2017 07:54

Overcome that is dreadful advice, definitely don't listen.

lynnsara of course we can help.

msrisotto · 14/09/2017 08:57

Hi lynnsara. You can do this! I found it easier than expected with reducing the sugar I used to add to my porridge. Just reduce by 1/2 a tsp or whole tsp a week. No need to go cold turkey as you won't enjoy it, but over time, you'll hardly notice the difference.

GoingRogue · 14/09/2017 12:19

Going to be watching this tonight (although never heard of the actress as don't watch soaps).

Welcome lynnsara what does a normal day look like to you? Are you looking to lose weight too? Just cut down little by little - you can do it!

early30smum · 14/09/2017 17:31

Sorry I haven't been on for a while. Lost 2lb at my second weigh in so 10lb off in 2 weeks. Third weigh in tomorrow. Definitely cut back on the sugar but not quite as low as I'd like!

GoingRogue · 14/09/2017 20:10

early30smum it's so hard isn't it?! My biscuit tin keeps calling me every time I make a cuppa. Well done on the 2lbs last week, and good luck for tomorrow Smile

GoingRogue · 14/09/2017 20:14

My food today was pretty good for a change, so I shall write it down.

B: 2 x Weetabix with fresh blueberries. Tea.
S: Tea and toast with real butter in bed all alone! Grin Twas divine. White bread as it needed using up. Whoops.
L: home made tomato and bean soup, followed by full-fat plain Greek yoghurt with fresh pineapple.
S: Tea. No biscuits

D: Chicken Caesar salad with croutons

I've just had a banana and am about to have a cup of decaff tea whilst watching that tv programme about fat on itv+1.

honeyroar · 14/09/2017 21:10

Welcome Lynnsara, you can definitely do this - I was the biggest sugar addict ever, I'd have a family pack of revels and two red bull each way on my drive to/from Heathrow and Manchester. I'd have three club/penguin type biscuits when I came in from doing the horses and had a coffee, and more later on.. You've got to go a bit tough on yourself at first. Find fruit or other substitute treats and wean yourself over.

Try the Paul McKenna quitting sugar book, it has hypno techniques too, which may enforce it for you?

Early30s well done, whatever you're doing is working superbly!

I'm doing ok. Eating fairly well, but rushing back and forth from hospital a lot (20 mins each way) and we've been out for lunch a few times too (trying to spoil my husband a bit, who has been a supportive superstar and not moaned once that he's lost his holiday). I'm trying to pick soups and salads etc when we're out. I've avoided desserts and the biscuits at home, so I'm happy enough with myself.

Mums doing ok, still not good, but not worrying me so much now.

hambo · 16/09/2017 14:21

Hi there, I am Hambo and a sugar addict. I am on day 5 of no sugar. I did it a few years ago and that time and this time I went really scatty, forgot appointments and got really mixed up about things. Has anyone else noticed these effects? I also am very cross with less patience than normal. I remember that last time I became totally calm and nicer to be with and also my pmt symptoms disappeared. This is why I'm doing it, to be healthy and more zen!

honeyroar · 17/09/2017 11:11

Hello Hanbo. It's gone a bit quiet on here with few people actually posting. I'm still here, plodding along! I felt that I coped better with lack of sleep and jet lag once I'd got sugar out of my system/habits. Did you give up carbs too?

Passthecake30 · 17/09/2017 19:00

Hi everyone, I'm trying hard to cut down on my sultanas/dried prune habit with my breakfast museli, currently replacing with defrosted frozen berries. I hadn't realised just how much I love them....

OuchBollocks · 17/09/2017 19:05

Hello hambo, this thread had dropped off my list but I am still successfully sugar free :) and I had little to no PMT this month which is fantastic for me. Hello honey and going
