Tomorrow I quit sugar

OuchBollocks · 06/08/2017 17:29

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

Cantseethewoods we are in Al Ain. We get to Dubai about 1-2x a month for weekends or days out. 8 years here now and love it.
Honeyroar, have you been before to Dubai? I hope you will have a bit of time for sightseeing. If you do, go to Dubai Mall there are enough fabulous things in there for one day.
Today i have been good so far
B - 2 poached eggs on wholemeal toast
L - 1 pitta with hummous
D - salmon with green beans, lemon and pine nuts with air fried potatos, 1 thai fish cake. I did have a teaspoon of sweet chilli sauce with it.
I am likely to fail a bit later as im going to make scones. It is still Eid (in my defense)

honeyroar · 02/09/2017 20:30

UAEmum I've been to Dubai a lot, but will probably be chilling out.

I've had a day out with family at Burghley. Had a very healthy picnic and another thin crust small pizza for dinner. Walked 8 miles up and down hills on hot sun, so not worried that any damage will have been done!

early30smum · 02/09/2017 21:47

So I've stuck religiously to WW and at the same tried to lower my sugar intake and have lost 8lb in my first week. Delighted with that! Have also started some gentle exercise and feel so much better already. Still probably can't really say I eat low sugar but much, much better than I was before I started! I think a gradual cutback whilst sticking to WW is the way for me.

honeyroar · 02/09/2017 22:17

That's great early30s, really well done. I used to do ww a lot in the past. I could never control the sugar/substitute sugar things.

honeyroar · 02/09/2017 22:18

(Sorry, that sounded negative, and it wasn't meant to!)

Tomorrow is another day overcome. Don't beat yourself up about it, just keep pushing on.

I have a dilemma. A good friend has bought me a box of expensive delicious pink champagne truffles as a belated birthday present. To eat or not to eat?

OP posts:
UAEMum · 03/09/2017 16:42

Ouchbollocks - eat them

Today i have had...
B - foul beans with tomatos, onions, herbs and 1 pitta
L - subway sandwich on wholemeal (turkey breast and salad). I sucummbed to a chocolate chip cookie.
S - Latte and nectarine
D - mensaf - Jordanian national dish of lamb in yoghurt sauce with rice
I will be having a small spoonful of the galaxy chocolate cheesecake in the fridge later :(

honeyroar · 03/09/2017 18:52

You'll feel so much better if you don't eat them.. I wouldn't. Get them out when you've got a houseful of guests - then you get one or two, but don't eat the box!

I've had a completely lazy day, done nothing at all!

B - Lily's granola, grapes and Greek yogurt.
S- two bananas, one Apple.
L- homemade butternut squash soup. Chunk of Bread and butter.
D- Three halloumi and veg fajitas with sour cream and guacamole.

GoingRogue · 03/09/2017 19:18

Hello everyone, I'm back. Well, I will be properly back tomorrow when I've finished the red wine and Green & Blacks dark choc with sea salt tonight Wink

Had a brilliant weekend away celebrating our anniversary. So much food enjoyed, that I'm looking forward to getting back on the straight and narrow.

I would follow honey's advice ouch and share the chocs. Or stash them away somewhere for a special occasion?

Hope you feel better soon overcome, and that MIL is soon on the mend. It's so hard not to comfort eat when life is tough ((hugs)). Are all the children back to school tomorrow? My eldest is, and my youngest back to preschool Tues.

Going to do a big food shop tomorrow and get lots of healthy food. Am struggling to think of stuff the kids would enjoy, so am leaning towards giving them their usual favs (anything pasta or sausage based!) And having salmon with brown rice/stir fries myself all week. Will make some soup for lunches.

early what an incredible weigh loss! Well done! Smile guns your wedding plans sound fab Smile

GoingRogue · 03/09/2017 19:18

P.s guns we had a ceilidh at our wedding Smile

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 03/09/2017 22:50

Those truffles sound amazing!

msrisotto · 04/09/2017 08:41

Hi everyone, I've been plodding along with the odd planned break for dinner parties but nothing excessive (which I should probably credit myself more with because my all or nothing tendencies usually let me down).

However, I've not dropped a pound Sad
I am a very healthy bmi though so maybe this is just the weight I'm meant to be...don't know. I know I have a healthy diet and I'm not especially inclined to reduce or eliminate carbs so I don't much know why there's been no movement but I'm not going to starve myself.

honeyroar · 04/09/2017 12:43

Hi Msrisotto, you sound like you've been doing well. I wonder why you haven't lost. Have you lost any inches instead of weight? Did you need to lose weight? I'd love to be at a healthy bmi. My husband has been doing the no sugar, but to a lesser degree. He doesn't need to lose weight, quite the opposite, and actually hasn't.

It's my last day off before going back to work, coo am feeling grumpy. I've already eaten a choc biscuit!

msrisotto · 04/09/2017 13:40

Thanks for responding honeyroar. I didn't need to lose weight, just self improvement (which I think we can end up doing endlessly tbh...we can always be 'better'). No sugar is visibly better for my skin which is a big motivation plus I felt like I had to impose some limits because of my all or nothing tendencies so I still think it's worth doing for me.

It was hard work breaking the habit of treating mood swings with sugar, or automatic cravings for dessert after dinner but it is possible and worth maintaining. I found it helpful to try to remind myself that the biscuit actually made me feel worse not better and gradually undoing the association.

GoingRogue · 04/09/2017 14:05

You make some really valid points msrisotto. Sorry you've not lost any actual weight, but better skin and habits whilst maintaining a healthy bmi (and attitude!) are all great positives.

I'm trying to focus on the better habits angle too. For example not just eating for the sake of it, and eating more healthily. I too am in the healthy bmi range, but right at the top and my jeans are all very tight so need to lose a few pounds.

honeyroar where is work taking you this time? Hope it goes well and you have nice colleagues.

Cantseethewoods · 04/09/2017 14:55

Hi All. Well done everyone for keeping on keeping on. Remember what the great philosopher Mark Zuckerberg said -' perfection is the enemy of getting shit done' Grin. Every low/no sugar meal or snack is a step in the right direction. Count those victories!

B: banana
S: soy latte
L: tuna poke bowl with extra green salad
S: mini babybel
D: baked salmon and salad, an orange.

Weekend wasn't great. Way too much wine. I'm stressing that I've underestimated the impact of this operation plus I'm traveling non- stop between now and then which I could do without.

OuchBollocks · 04/09/2017 16:51

msrisotto if your bmi is in the healthy range it will be difficult to get a large enough calorie deficit to lose much. But it's brilliant that you look and feel better. To encourage the weight loss have you thought about 5:2? I'm on the 5:2 chat thread, they're very encouraging if you're interested.

cantsee that's a good eating day. I also had too much wine this weekend and don't even have an upcoming op to worry about. Do you have long to wait?

OP posts:
honeyroar · 04/09/2017 18:21

Can't see, try not to worry (easy for me to say, I know!), it won't change anything. You can cross the bridge of how much impact it will have when you get there. Hopefully it won't be as bad as you think. I think I got all stressed last time I had an operation, but it wasn't so bad. You get through it because you have to.

Wow at how little you've eaten, I'd be struggling on that personally. Ok for a day or two to gain control, but it would have me falling off the wagon in no time. Be careful that you're not being too strict on yourself..

Rogue I'm off to LA tomorrow. I'm planning on sleeping most of it! I've had busy days off this week, with 5.30 starts, and we go away camping a couple of days after I get back. I feel a tad under the weather so want to try and recharge! But.. I know I've an old friend on the crew that I've not seen for about 10 years, so my plan for a quiet trip may fall down!

OuchBollocks · 04/09/2017 19:22

It's quite easy to eat well in L.A. isn't it honey? I'm quite envious of your jet setting, though i suppose its not the same if it's work.

Fast day today so I've had:
Breakfast - 2 cups of tea
Lunch - tofu stir fry with half a nest of noodles, ginger garlic and soy sauce
Dinner - baked cod with carrots broccoli and cauliflower, and a teeny bit of sweet chilli dip (half tsp sweet chilli sauce, half tsp mayo, weighed and a shocking 60 calories for that tiny amount!) I know sweet chilli sauce is sweet - hint in the name Grin - but figure such a tiny amount of it in a low carb meal won't do any harm.

OP posts:
honeyroar · 04/09/2017 19:39

I have the odd bit of sweet chilli dressing now and again Ouch, I have the same theory that a tiny bit can't hurt too much!

Yes LA is fine for healthy food. I don't mind LA, but nowadays we stay miles out near Disney in a ridiculously busy hotel a long journey from the airport, so it's not as good as it used to be. It's a fun job generally, but we go to horrible places as well as the cool ones, and I've missed so many Christmases and celebrations over the years too, so has good and bad points, like any job.

bibblebobblebubble · 04/09/2017 19:51

Keep it going everyone.... I am finding it fairly easy now to eat healthily for breakfast and lunch but really struggled today come around 5pm - was home with the kids and got the nibbles. Ate a load of cherry tomatoes and some bread and butter so avoided disaster but it was hard.

Book recommendation!! - I read this a while back and thought it was very insightful and inspiring - I'm going to re-read. It's not specific to sugar but is more generally about food habits (especially addictive habits) and motivation:

Eating Less: Say goodbye to overeating by Gillian Riley

GoingRogue · 04/09/2017 20:45

Thanks for the book recommendation - I've taken a screen shot and will see if the library have it Smile Amazon reviews are good.

I've not had the best of days food wise. Feel like I'm over eating due to boredom/habit/actual fear of hunger. I'm orally fixated. Need to sort that.

B: bran flakes and banana. Tea.
S: 3 heaped tablespoons Greek yoghurt, chopped pear and grapes
L: brown pasta with pesto and cherry toms (I'm the only one who eats pesto and the jar needed using up). Ds2's toast crusts Hmm
S: more grapes. Tea and 2 x biscuits ! Angry
D: pan fried salmon fillet with stir fried veg and rice noodles. Tea.
S: Greek yoghurt, with Lizi's granola and fresh berries. More tea.

Enjoy catching up with the old friend honey! Oh, quick question you might know the answer to if you don't mind please?! I'm flying with EasyJet to N.I in a couple of weeks. The holdall I was going to use is 3/4cms too tall according to their cabin baggage allowance dimensions...I've got speedy boarding/"up front" seat and will get there early. Do you think they'll sting me with a charge and therefore I should go and buy a new cabin bag (would get one labelled up as such so know it would meet regs)?? Sorry for off-topic question everyone !

OuchBollocks · 04/09/2017 20:59

going I fly easyjet to NI quite a lot. In theory they can ask you to put your luggage in their frame to see if it fits but I've never seen it happen. Because you've got speedy boarding they're even less likely to look to closely at it, Because you'll be getting on first before the overhead lockers get full. This is my experience from Belfast and Stansted anyway but if you're not in a rush, they usually ask for volunteers to check luggage in for free as flights get full, everyone has hand luggage and the holds run out of room, so.you could volunteer and just carry on your phone and money or whatever.

OP posts:
honeyroar · 04/09/2017 21:20

It doesn't sound such a bad day food wise, apart from the biscuit, which isn't the end of the world if you don't do it everyday.

I think Ouch answered your question much better than I could have.
