Tomorrow I quit sugar

OuchBollocks · 06/08/2017 17:29

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

Good day today. Temptations faced and I didn't give in. Tomorrow's big one will be Soft Play Hell, I'm used to having a bit of cake to numb the horrors Grin

Hi - I started a low sugar diet 4 days ago now. I read the book 'sweet poison' by David Gillespie , was very interesting. I am aiming for eating less than 10g of sugar a day. I was amazed how bad fruit juice is for you, and even things like yogurts, so much added sugar. I am allowing myself diet drinks though as my treat, because I still need that sweet taste, I'm hoping that over time I can wean myself off them. I bought a box of Shredded Wheat today for my breakfast - not overly looking forward to them!

OuchBollocks · 09/08/2017 08:45

Day3. No sleep. Very very grumpy baby (teething?) Sod sugar, can I open the gin?

Good luck ouch!
Day one for me, I'm going away a week today so my aim is it be super good for this week and hopefully lose a couple of pounds (so I can put it back on holidayGrin) then when I get back I will look at doing it long term.
I put on a lot of weight with my last two babies (13 months apart) I've shifted 3 stone but I've still got 2 to go to get me where I want to be. I'm 40 in November and I WILL weigh 9 stone anything by then!

shamoffour · 09/08/2017 10:42

Dangermouse I love fage 0% it's my good to snack with a few raspberries and flake almonds it's lovely!

shamoffour · 09/08/2017 10:44

Good=go to

pandapop17 · 09/08/2017 12:52

No sugar so far today. It's the afternoon slump In the office I find hard. Usually rely on a chunky kit Kat to get me through!

Littlepig8834 · 09/08/2017 14:02

So I'm trying to lower my sugar intake, using MFP to track, what is an low to ok amount of sugar per day.

I want to know what I should be aiming for rather than the stats MFP gives you.

I used to do SW which certainly isn't low sugar so need all the help I can get!

So far today I've had soya yoghurt, blueberries and coconut and peanut butter. Not a lot I know but should get some lunch in the next hour.

humanfemale · 09/08/2017 14:14

I think I need to join you guys too!

I've been doing really well since February with very low sugar but over the last couple of days have slipped a bit. Culminating with me eating 3/4 of a big sharing bag of skittles and a normal sized packet of Starburst last night in bed. 😑

I woke up with a very puffy face today. Definitely Skittle's fault. And I wouldn't have minded if it had been brilliant, but within 5 mins of eating them I felt like shit.

So as of today I'm back on the wagon.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 09/08/2017 14:14

Can I join in please?

Currently doing the blood sugar diet (it's my millionth re-start!) but this time I feel the need for a real detox- so I'm trying to cut back on sweetener (only 2 a day, but that means goodbye delicious coffee and hello hot black satan water) and cutting right down in fruit and other natural sweet things as well. It's a low carb plan, but I'm trying to up my fibre whilst also cutting the carbs so quite frankly I'm a tad grouchy now on day 3. Last night I caved and had a crumpet with butter, but other than that nothing naughty!

I haven't read through this thread yet but I will do later!

humanfemale · 09/08/2017 14:15

Had Total 5% yogurt, berries and ground nuts for lunch.

bringmelaughter · 09/08/2017 15:13

I'm in. I have 2 stones of baby weight clinging to me over 2 years after my last baby. I'm fat and tired and a classic munch my way out of stress person.

I'm going to focus on processed sugar starting with the sugar I add to my tea because it just feels comforting.

I predict my willpower is going to be seriously challenged!

SugarMiceInTheRain · 09/08/2017 15:46

I, too, am a sugar addict. Until recently I haven't had to watch what I eat but I hit 35 and my poor eating choices are starting to bite me. I am not yet overweight but am over my comfortable weight and do not look good in my clothes any more. I definitely comfort eat and feel sluggish and lethargic all the time, which I strongly suspect is due to being reliant on sugar and caffeine to get through the day. Was doing well today until the post lunch slump when I devoured a very large piece of chocolate brownie I'd made with DD (3) and have drunk nearly a litre of Pepsi Max since midday! On holiday next week and I predict that copious amounts of rubbish will be consumed as it's a self-catering but actually with very limited cooking facilities Hmm so I think we'll be relying on convenience stuff a lot.

OuchBollocks · 09/08/2017 18:56

Hello fellow sugar-fighters! Good luck and flat stomachs to you all :)

bringmelaughter I find my willpower is stronger when I'm flat out barred from it. Hopefully you will find yours.

My resolve was tested when for Reasons (dull) I ended up in Pret A Manger with two hungry children. The nice man gave DD a free (!) Chocolate chip cookie which was too big for her, and despite the lovely melty chocolate, and DS being on a feeding frenzy, I managed to not eat what she left. Victory! I was bloody glad I had pre made dinner though, when we got in from our day out it could have been a disaster only for the chilli in the slow cooker.

Where are you headed to sugar mice? Hopefully there will be lots of nice fresh local produce for you to eat, but have a great time away from the shitty weather we're having.

OuchBollocks · 09/08/2017 18:59

humanfemale Skittles are crap anyway imo Grin

BlessYourCottonSocks · 09/08/2017 19:03

I need to join you, I think. Not sure if I can face it, frankly, but I have begun to accept that I am addicted to sugar. I keep putting it off.

UtterlyFcked · 09/08/2017 19:09

YES up there to the poster with the chunky kit kat!

My breakfast for years was a chunky Kit Kat and a red bull. Pure bliss every day, back when I was 22 and the same weight as a tea towel. Now I am old and fat and grumpy and have muesli Angry

bringmelaughter · 09/08/2017 19:14

Yep hoping flat out stopping sugar may help as I definitely struggle with limiting to one piece of chocolate for example.

Hopefully this thread will help too.

SaltMarshPirate · 09/08/2017 19:23

This is a timely thread. My dh and I have been half arsedly trying to cut down on sugar but have not been that stringent (I am having white wine as I type). However, our dentist suggested that the best thing for our ASD son would be to follow a sugar free diet to avoid future dental treatment as he would have to have a general anaesthetic as he is so anxious. I honestly don't know where to start. Can anyone recommend a book/ app/ website?

unweavedrainbow · 09/08/2017 19:31

SaltMarshPirate do you mean completely sugar free or just no added sugar? Completely sugar free is quite tricky to do in general, and I suspect more so for a child, as it involves cutting out not only naturally sweet things like fruit and some veg (red peppers, peas, sweetcorn etc) but also starchy carbs like pasta and potatoes. Avoiding added sugar simply means not eating things which have sugar as a separate ingredient-which might be more than you imagine (things like baked beans and BBQ sauce are all very heavy on added sugar) but does mean that you don't have to restrict so much if you're prepared to cook from scratch. Did the dentist elaborate?

SaltMarshPirate · 09/08/2017 20:32

Thanks for your reply. I suspect (I hope) he means low sugar, i will ring him for clarification. My thoughts were similar to yours regarding fruit etc and also it felt quite mean to subject a 6 year old to such a regime. I was thinking about sugar substitutes like stevia and xylitol and whether they were worth investing in? I am prepared to cook from scratch.
Will ring dentist in the am. Thank you for your reply.

Spottyparrot99 · 09/08/2017 20:41

May i join you? I'm 4stone heavier than I was before 3 pregnancies in 4 years ( 2 with gestational diabetes Sad) I am so screwed if I don't loose some weight soon - I can't bare the thought of being back on insulin.

OuchBollocks · 09/08/2017 20:59

You can do it spottyparrot, the thought of those needles will kick your butt. I had loads of rounds of self injecting this year and fuck me it sucks.

Saltmarsh I have no in depth knowledge of the effects of sweeteners on teeth. I do know that fruit, especially dried fruit and fruit juices, are full of sugar and acids that are bad for teeth, and anything carbonated is bad too. So going for the lower sugar fresh fruits, only drinking water ideally if your son can manage it, will be good places to start. Good luck, that sounds hard.
