Tomorrow I quit sugar

OuchBollocks · 06/08/2017 17:29

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

Not too bad today

B - porridge
AM - coffee
L - salad
PM - soya/fruit yogurt and sweet/salt Propercorn (OK so this is kind of cheating, but it's not that sweet)
D - Spanish omelette, fruit salad

I've just started reading an interesting book by Gretchen Rubin called Better than Before which is all about habit formation. There's interesting stuff about how habits are all about reducing the number of decisions we have to take and therefore how much willpower we need to make the 'right' decisions. You just make one big decision (no sugar) then the small decisions (shall I have that biscuit or donut or whatever) are far fewer, once the habit's formed.

I'm home again. I ate pretty well in Singapore and ok on the plane (did have one biscuit, but not bad when the others i worked with were eating left over business class deserts in front of me and saying they were to die for! And it was a 13hr flight overnight, I left all the chocolate too! We will see how the scales look tomorrow - I'm usually heavier when I've just flown.

Ps, wasn't Game of Thrones great!

Cantseethewoods · 30/08/2017 03:35

What is bubble tea!

Bubble tea is a Taiwanese specialty - there are various incarnations but the default is sweetened iced milk tea with tapioca pearls in the bottom. You drink it through a big straw to hoover up the pearls which are kind of chewy but not sweet. It is one of those things that should be disgusting but is frikking delicious Grin

Note: milk tea is what Asians call what we would think of as normal tea- i.e. black tea with milk.

OuchBollocks · 30/08/2017 20:24

honeyroar GoT was fab Grin

I have been away for a week, just back. Had some sweet popcorn during my first cinema trip in over 3 years, but that was the only blip in a sea of cakes, biscuits, trifles and chocolate. I'm quite proud of myself really.

That's brilliant Ouch. You should feel proud.

I'm doing ok. My scales had gone back down a lb today, althpugh I usually weigh Friday if I'm home. I've a couple of days out at Burghley horse trials over the ne t few days, but I've organised healthy packed lunches and should walk a good few miles while I'm there hopefully. I've also got to creosote seven stables on Friday, so that should be a good dollop of extra exercise and burn some calories!

That's great Overcome. Glad to hear that about your mil.

I'm at Burghley horse trials watching dressage and driving everybody mad as I'm crunching carrot batons. (They're all driving me mad eating sweets though!)

Cantseethewoods · 01/09/2017 06:58

ouch I'm in awe of your self-discipline

Glad MIL is on the mend overcome.

Honey Are you a rider yourself or is it mainly your DD?

Terrible terrible day yesterday- started ok with banana and hard boiled egg after the gym and tuna sashimi and brown rice for lunch. Wheels started to come off around 3pm with a Cronut (delicious), and then probably about 4 glasses of champagne after work and a trip to the Golden arches on the way home plus some liquorice allsorts when I got home- Gah!! Even as I was eating the sweets I was thinking "these arent nice" but I couldnt stop eating them.

Line drawn, and back on the horse. Did a tough climb/run this morning (+800m vertical) with my running buddy so penance paid.

Going to the Phil tonight so no boozing.

UAEMum · 01/09/2017 07:01

I will join you. I will start tomorrow because today is Eid. I would like to kick bread too.

gunsandbanjos · 01/09/2017 07:31

3lbs off for me. Feeling much less bloated too!

Overcome I do ride myself but don't compete anymore these days and Burghley is top level international competition- I just like going watching and they're always in the deer park of lovely stately homes, so doubly nice. I walked 11 miles there yesterday and am going back with my husband and stepson tomorrow so will probably walk that at least again.

I've managed to scrape those two pounds back off, so am feeling happy again!

Yesterday I had
B - Lily's granola, Greek yogurt and berries.
L - cheese sandwich on brown bread.
S - Tupperware full of grapes, cherry toms and carrot batons. Crisps. Two lattes.
D - small very thin crust margherita pizza while at the event. (Had planned veggie noodles from the noodle bar but it looked a bit grubby, so pizza was the only other veg option!)

Am meant to be creosoting today but I'm knackered, got another 5.30 start tomorrow and my friend just had a baby, so might swerve my jobs!

gunsandbanjos · 01/09/2017 10:54

I get married 3 months tomorrow!! I'm so excited, such great motivation.

This week I may be a little off plan as I leave my current job and got a few nights/lunches out but I'll do my best not to ruin it while still having fun.

UAEMum · 01/09/2017 16:19

I decided to try to be good today even though it's Eid (Like xmas). I had.....
B - menakish which is basically like a pizza sized piece of bread with cheese in - not great on the bread front but no sugar
L - banana
D - went out to a Lebanese restaurant. I ate salads, hummus, lots of grilled chicken and lots of yummy bread! Then they have us free um all which is a creamy dessert made with pastry and milk and nuts. I had a small bit.
Drinks - diet coke, tea and coffee
So...... not too bad today. Now I need to restrain myself from attacking the galaxy in the fridge.

honeyroar · 01/09/2017 20:21

Happy Eid UAEMum? Are you living in the UAE?

Gunsandbanjos that wedding will rush up! Are you having no a big do?

I've had a reasonable day.

B- Fruit and fibre ss milk (not great on sugar, but wanted to use it up!)

L- on the hoof, so 2 bananas, yoghurt and grapes, slice of emmental.

D- pasta with ratatouille sauce.

gunsandbanjos · 01/09/2017 20:27

honeyroar no, not a big do. We're actually getting married in December, super low key (only 7 of us) at the church my fiancé did his training at. We're friends we the minister.
After is lunch at a Michelin star restaurant.

Then in July next year we have a couple of things to celebrate so will be doing a big ceilidh with my husbands family coming over for a couple of weeks.

A little unorthodox maybe but works for us.

UAEMum · 01/09/2017 20:48

Thank you honeyroar. Yes we live in the UAE. The incredible heat means we don't go out much this time of year and sit down in a.c. more. Not great for eating and temptAtion lol.
I was in the UK for 6 weeks this Summer and sugar gorged on all the lovely rubbish I had really missed. Fruit and nut and jammy dodgers especially! So back on track now I'm home again!

UAEMum · 01/09/2017 20:49

I didn't approach the galaxy in fridge tonight - result!

honeyroar · 01/09/2017 21:19

Sounds lovely Guns. I only had 20 at my day reception and a party afterwards.

UAEMum I'm coming out to Dubai at the end of the month (only for a night though!).

Cantseethewoods · 02/09/2017 08:24

Better day yesterday

B- Banana pre. run with 2 cups of tea.
L - Mixed salad and a tub of crab meat
D - thai red chicken & vegetable curry and brown rice, glass of wine.
S- couple of cucumber and cream cheese canapés and a glass of wine during the concert interval. Ignored the platters of chocolate covered strawberries.

Have not lost much but I've hit the weights pretty hard since I got back from the UK and have been eating my protein so I reckon I've gained some muscle- was looking pretty jacked today if I do say so myself Grin.

Today had 2 eggs for breakfast pre gym and then tomato, mozzarella and avocado salad for lunch and an orange. Tonight may have to be pizza as have 8 kids descending on us for a pizza and movie night for the DS birthdays but will try not let them drive me to drink.

UAEmum I lived in Dubai in 2008-9. We lived above Souk al Bahar in the Old Town.

OuchBollocks · 02/09/2017 11:42

I don't know how you get away with having such small weddings. There's forty-bloody-five people coming to my son's christening. 18 of them flying in from Northern Ireland! And it's only a small tea sandwiches and cake type affair. Obviously I will be foregoing the cake Halo and we will gloss over the dominos pizza and chicken wings and wine I ate last night following the afternoon from hell with my darling daughter, who was being so obnoxious a total stranger gave me a hug.

Cantseethewoods · 02/09/2017 11:49

I think it's easy to go small or large but it's in the middle where family arguments start.

gunsandbanjos · 02/09/2017 12:00

Oh dear ouchbollocks! Sounds like a tough day.

My wedding is super small as most of our family is on other continents!
My fiancé is South African and so his family will come to the celebration in July rather than the very small December wedding. My brother is in Australia so again too far to come twice in 6 months.
The celebration will be much bigger, probably 100+ people. Again low key though, will be a ceilidh with food and drinks but buffet style no sit down meal, just laid back and fun.
