Tomorrow I quit sugar

OuchBollocks · 06/08/2017 17:29

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

Cantseethewoods I'm so jealous your kids are going back to school tomorrow! I have to wait until 4th Sept. To be fair though, mine are being pretty well behaved today (always the way the day after they've been absolute horrors).

OvercomeByGravity thanks for the tips. I actually did have plenty of cheese and crackers to hand...just craved chocolate and had some. Meh. Hope you're having a lovely time at F&M Smile

Whatshouldmyusernamebe Fingers crossed you have a nicer evening meal today.

GoingRogue · 23/08/2017 14:02

honeyroar Sorry to hear about your MIL Sad Sounds like you had a tricky time. I'm avoiding my scales for the exact reason you've given. I feel really bloated and I don't think they'll be kind...

Bosabosa · 23/08/2017 14:15

Have only read first and last page of thread (sorry!) but good to see so much work going on avoiding sugar.
I gave up sucrose (table sugar) 4
Months ago and I def feel better for it-skin better, hormones better, energy great! Still breast feeding so not sure if weight will continue to come off but am now comfortably in the 'healthy' zone for BMI which I had not been in for over 5 years so feel great about that.
Had a bit of sugar over holiday and my stomach definitely got flabby (reduced once back on the wagon over the next week).
Best bit is having lost that 'I must eat something now ' craving I used to have which was all fuelled by sugar consumption.
And having just discovered Lizi's low sugar granola, it's great to have found a tasty low sugar cereal!
I don't diet in any other way- just avoid sucrose and fructose (unless in whole fruit). I agree some fruit now tastes unbearably sweet
. Good luck to us!!!!!

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 23/08/2017 14:24

Just eaten a load of biscuits :( now tired and starving hungry.

Cantseethewoods · 23/08/2017 14:31

Never mind what. Just draw a line under it and carry on. Have a bit of greek yoghurt now if you're hungry to settle your blood sugar, have a healthy tea/dinner later and forget it. You have not "ruined" anything.

[for reference please see my earlier post re Saturdays drinking binge]. I am now back on that wagon- yeeeee-haaaaa!

honeyroar · 23/08/2017 14:33

Hello Bossbosa, you've done really well.

Whatshould what made you give in to temptation? Could you put goodies (or baddies) such as biscuits on a high shelf where they're an effort to get?

Thanks Rogue, I normally do ok with my mil, she hasn't had a meltdown with me for ages. It really annoyed me that the people at the next table were sniggering! Re the time of the month bloat. I'm just at the end of it and thought I'd got away with it this month, but no the unlucky lb arrived!! I'd just have liked to be down another lb and nearly back to where I was before I go back to work on Friday.

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 23/08/2017 15:03

My friend was here and we were gassing just really hungry today too. Had scrambled egg on granary toast for breakfast which should have filled me up.

honeyroar · 23/08/2017 15:09

When Ive had friends round like that, I've put a bowl of grapes on the table too as well as the biscuits, so I can still sit there and pick, just at the grapes.

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 23/08/2017 15:34

Good idea.

LydiaScott · 23/08/2017 16:16

This sounds great, I may have to join you I am a sucker for sugar!

GoingRogue · 23/08/2017 19:00

Evening all. Just thought I'd recommend this book I picked up in the library today. I volunteer there (Summer Reading Challenge) and as it was quiet I'm now on page 60 already! It has made me realise I'm eating too much fruit though...

Tomorrow I quit sugar
honeyroar · 23/08/2017 19:08

How much fruit do you eat to be considered too much? I don't buy into the limiting good, healthy food theories. As long as I'm not eating rubbish I'm pleased.

GoingRogue · 23/08/2017 19:25

Here's my food for the day:

B: bran flakes with fresh raspberries and blueberries
S: piece of small protein bread, toasted and topped with peanut butter, a large banana, 1/2 an apple (thanks to ds2 not eating it)
L: mushroom and red pepper 2-egg omelette topped with cheese, served with fried sliced potato (I use spray oil)
S: handful of cashews with more raspberries and blueberries, a few grapes (a better post-nap snack than chocolate!). Another apple on the way to the library.
D: brown pasta with meatballs and homemade tomato/veg sauce.

I'll prob have a bowl of full-fat Greek yoghurt topped with flaked almonds and fresh strawberries later.

So...most days I'd say I have 3-6 pieces of whole fresh fruit. I know it's not bad, but it can't be great either. I eat it when I'm bored, stressed or tired. Need to address that at some point a little further down the low sugar road.

honeyroar · 23/08/2017 19:48

I think thats a perfectly healthy amount of fruit. I eat way more. Why was your book critical of fruit? I'd deal with that later if you still think it's an issue further down the line. Control the crap first, if you know what I mean.

My meals today -

B - Lily's granola, blueberries and Greek yoghurt.

L - Cauliflower and Almond soup (tasted v creamy, probably not good!)
Halloumi, lettuce and tomato sandwich on brown bread.

S - latte. 2 apples

D - salmon, ratatouille and wild rice.

Later if I go to Tescos - yoghurt and grapes.

GoingRogue · 23/08/2017 20:29

The book is part-guide and part-memoir. Tbf the author completely cut out sugar and sweeteners; so no white bread or pasta, no white potatoes or rice, and no fruit in any form...and no alcohol Shock She says it contains too much sugar/is too sweet for her to detox properly, but I'm only a couple of chapters in and she's on week 3.

It's a really good read as has facts as well as a personal journey. She's single, mid-30's and a size 16 (UK) career woman. Seems likeable enough so far.

Control the crap first is my new mantra! Your food looks fab for today Smile

gunsandbanjos · 23/08/2017 20:34

I'm in!
I get married in 100 days and want to lose at least a stone. I'm doing LCHF. Bring on the cheese...

honeyroar · 23/08/2017 21:14

How exciting gunsandbanjos!

Thanks overcome! I'll do my best.

honeyroar · 23/08/2017 23:06

Woohoo Overcome! What a result that you had a great F&M day and yet still didn't overdo it. Hope you get some sleep. Don't worry about what the media spouts. They can't be nice/truthful about anything, and most of what they come up with is pure s.....ugar! I hope his results are good.

GoingRogue · 23/08/2017 23:16

Welcome gunsandbanjos and congratulations on the upcoming nuptials! It's my 5th wedding anniversary next week (was looking forward to champagne and dessert after posh dinner...not sure what I'll do yet). Have you tried low-sugar before?

OvercomeByGravity thanks for the F&M review - glad you had a good time and didn't binge on sugar either! Fingers crossed your ds gets the results he deserves tomorrow - good luck.

honeyroar forgot to say, are you going to re-weigh on Friday before work and hope that pesky 1lb has done one by then?

gunsandbanjos · 24/08/2017 06:41

Hi GoingRogue, yes I tend to low carb as a rule but I'm just inconsistent with it! Just need to get my bum in gear and stick to it properly.
Have cheese instead of dessert? Congratulations on your anniversary.

GoingRogue · 24/08/2017 07:27

Thank you! Luckily dh doesn't have a sweet tooth so he'll be happy to either have starter - Main and/or share a cheese plate at the end. But I'm going to miss having chocolate or cheesecake ! Will see how I feel on the night.

So do you not do pasta or white rice then? I'd struggle to give those up for sure...

gunsandbanjos · 24/08/2017 07:46

Nope, no pasta, rice, bread, noodles etc.

Lots of salad, eggs, cheese, meat and wine!

Littlepig8834 · 24/08/2017 17:53

Overcome hope your son got the grades he wanted

Gunsandbanjoes what is a typical days food for you when low carbing?

For some reason I have been feeling really hungry the past couple of days, despite having decent meals I just have an urge to constantly graze throughout the day
