Tomorrow I quit sugar

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

Littlepig I today I had:
Coffee with double cream while I was getting ready for work
While at work I had another coffee with cream, some slices of Gouda and Parma ham for breakfast
Lunch was a chicken breast stuffed with sautéed onions, peppers, mushrooms and cheese with salad
Dinner was grilled halloumi, homemade guacamole, salad and a glass of wine.
2 litres of water was also had.

That's fairly standard for a day.

lovealotbear · 24/08/2017 19:38

Hello I have been no sugar since coming back from holiday last Friday. So it's been 6 days and I have found it tough. I have been lurking to get inspiration and pick up tips, thanks for Lizzi granola tip as was struggling with breakfast as no time to do eggs each day. Today especially I kind of crashed this afternoon and have had no energy at all!

I have been also avoiding artificial sweeteners such as in Diet Coke as I think this is always my issue when I try to eat better. I have been eating lots of nuts, and Advocado and not so healthy cheese. The scales reflect this as not lost a lb! However trying to stay positive that my taste buds are changing as ate some sugar snap peas today and they tasted so sweet!

I have slipped up twice with a glass of Diet Coke at a BBQ and two wine gums which tasted really sickly. I have tried to forgive myself as it is so tough avoiding sugar as it's everywhere! I am also keeping carbs in as training for a half marathon at the moment and normally have lots of sweet things to keep up my energy so trying to have whole grain pasta and bread as energy sources. I have become an avid label reader and amazed how much sugar is in everything! Hoping it will get easier as I get used to what I'm eating and my body adjusts.

OvercomeByGravity those grades are incredible!! Enjoy the celebratory champers!

Does anyone else have a really unsupportive partner btw? Mine keeps huffing and tutting and rolling his eyes when I start talking about the sugar content in things, or saying I won't join him for a cider. He's very much an "everything in moderation" bloke. Which is ok for him as he's naturally slim and always has been. He really pissed me off earlier because he cut me off (again) when I started to say I was shocked that sugar is the second ingredient in a jar of chow mein sauce, and we ended up having an argument. Ho hum. Here's my food for the day (was at a National Trust place with friends for 6hrs).

B: Ready Brek and berries. Tried a bit of cinnamon on it but wasn't a fan.
S: banana
L: hummus and breadsticks, cheese, ham, crackers and tomatoes. Some strawberries.
S: An apple and more berries.
Another snack whilst cooking dinner as was ravenous ! = more breadsticks and hummus, a handful of almonds, two chicken dippers and a mini potato and carrot waffle (thanks to kids not wanting them).
D: Small (like, small kids size) portion of chilli and rice.

Oh, my 3yo did that annoying thing of requesting an ice-cream, having one lick and then saying he doesn't want it now ! Angry I did have two tiny licks before throwing it in the bin. A little bit of me died inside...

GoingRogue · 24/08/2017 20:01

lovealotbear we cross-posted (always takes me ages to write a post as constant interruptions from kids).

Welcome and well done for six days! I'm just finishing day 12 and agree it's tough. Have had a few slip ups too (hello carrot cake and mini Bounty, for example). I'm pretty sure I've worked out I've eaten the same amount of crap over a week that I probably would have eaten in a day though, which is excellent.

honeyroar · 24/08/2017 20:29

Hello all! Glad you're all doing well. And fantastic grades Overcomebygravity!😀

I'm having an iffy day! Not in the best mood. I never am the day before I have to go back to work after my part time block! I also noticed the in charge crew member tomorrow is a pain in the butt. My scales are still showing I'm up a lb (I should weigh in tomorrow, and will, but am not holding my breath). Half way through the week they were well on the way down, then went up. I decided to go for a ride to cheer myself up and my horse had lost a shoe, so couldn't, and I got told to F off by two mountain bikers when I pointed out they were trespassing on our footpath!! And finally a little stray cat I've been trying to tame got killed by a tractor and mower this afternoon. Hey ho! Think I need an early night.

Anyway, my food today-

B - fruit and fibre and ss milk (wondered if all the calories in Lily's has caused the gain as it's all I've changed this week!!)

S - two apples and a banana.

L - halloumi salad sani on multigrain.

S - handful of grapes (stepson had biscuits, I didn't!)

D - halloumi and lentil salad (trying to use it up before I go!)

Will probably have grapes and yoghurt soon.

I'm lucky in that my husband has been very interested and supportive on the no sugar journey. I think he's enjoyed the transformation in me body wise. He was pretty prickly when I stopped eating meat a few years ago though, "don't expect me to join you.. Don't know why you need to do this.." It did come to a row "I'm not asking you to do it with me, but I do expect your support and you to stop picking at me..!!" Ironically nowadays he happily chooses to eat veggie dishes with me.

GoingRogue · 24/08/2017 20:36

Sounds like you've had a wretched day, sorry to hear about the cat Sad

The thing is with this fascination of mine with sugar atm is that I am responsible for feeding the whole family. There's me, dh, out boys who are 3 and 6 and then my stepson who is 17 and stays every-other-weekend. Now, I'm not saying I'm stopping them from having sweets for a treat, biscuits, chocolate etc. But if I'm doing the food shopping (dh never does it) and cooking then I need to start reading labels a lot more and understanding exactly what is in things. It's fine to have the sugary treats if the main meals are sugar-free, but I've been buying sauces with sugar listed as one of the main ingredients ffs Hmm It's all such an eye-opener.

Anyway, he brought me up a cup of (now sugar free) tea and apologised for being rude earlier. He then went out and bought himself some beer because he knows I don't like it...so he his forgiven!

honeyroar · 24/08/2017 21:11

That's ok then if they apologise.

It's shocking just where sugar lurks, isn't it! Even a chilli mix is full of it. In fact it's shocking just what's in processed food full stop, I started looking at labels more when I stopped eating meat.

pandapop17 · 24/08/2017 21:48

I am glad he apologised GoingRogue I think a supportive partner makes a big difference. Mine is on a diet at the mo so the house is mostly free of sugary food. I am jealous of people who don't like the taste of sugar if they accidentally consume it. I am still craving chocolate and have to fully engage my will power and avoid it not to give in.

I have jumped on the granola band wagon and got some today. It's currently reduced at Morrison's Smile

gunsandbanjos · 24/08/2017 22:18

I'm lucky that my fiancé doesn't do sugar either, he's stricter than I am!

GoingRogue · 24/08/2017 22:22

It really is shocking how much savoury stuff has sugar in! I reckon my dh thinks he has a healthy diet, but he drinks coffee all day at work, doesn't do breakfast, and lunch is often a Tesco meal deal (ie, white bread sandwich, crisps and a smoothie). He's recently been marvelling at these "super food" smoothies, which are green and have 10 of your 5 a day in or whatever. I have explained they are pure sugar but hey. He doesn't have a sweet tooth and is genetically slim. I'm trying to get him to understand that that doesn't always = healthy ! I'm jealous of you guys who have partners who are dieting or cut out sugar too.

lovealotbear · 24/08/2017 22:28

GoingRogue I agree the it certainly helps if partners are supportive, pleased your dh is. My dh sat and ate a whole packet of Bourbon biscuits in front of me tonight! He is lucky as tall and not overweight but I do think it will catch up at some point. He is generally supportive but think a bad day at work tipped him over, funny how emotions have such a big effect on us reaching for sugar. honeyroar So sorry about the little cat, that is just the kind of thing that would gave me reaching for a sweet snack.

honeyroar · 24/08/2017 22:48

Thanks. Luckily I didn't see it happen and he wasn't my cat, it's just a shame. I was hoping to persuade it to stay at our stables by winter (although my ginger Tom disagreed!) so it got some shelter and food.

My husband is tall and lean too, needs to put weight on if anything, but he says it doesn't mean he should just eat crap as it will hit his heart one day..

I try and fill the biscuit tin up with ones I don't like (bourbons included!), but I found the biscuit tin doesn't scream at me so much once I've got into the no sugar. Previously I could eat the lot in a day!

GoingRogue · 24/08/2017 23:09

I can't wait for all the chocolate and biscuits to be gone from this house. I bought loads the other week...am taking the boys round to MIL's tomorrow afternoon as she's looking after them whilst I volunteer. Think I'll take a load round there so she can spoil the boys. Although agree the biscuit tin isn't as appealing as it once was.

My dh is almost 6ft tall and 11st 7lbs! He's 40 next year and I reckon if he loses any more it'll start ageing him...yep, I'm just jealous of his skinny genes!

Urgh. Am so bloated atm. My tummy looks massive, and a sneaky weigh this am reveals I've stayed the same this week (should really only be weighing on a Sat but was curious). Maybe it's the granola and full-fat yoghurt. I really do need to cut down on my portion sizes too. Going to buy some oatcakes and brown rice tomorrow.

honeyroar I know I've probably said this already but I'm so envious of your ginger tom! If we didn't live on a main road I'd so get one.

honeyroar · 24/08/2017 23:51

You'll have to come and house sit! Your kids would love it, we've so many animals! Our Ginger did get run over once, even though it's a quiet road. Thankfully he only snapped a tooth and is now terrified of cars - runs a mile when one is coming. I wish his sister was, she just sits in the road like she owns it.

I'm not sure if I'm being paranoid about the granola. It's the only change I've made really, and I've put on.. Plus it was really high calorie wise. I'm not really bothered about counting calories, I just wondered if it might be a factor. I'm not looking forward to Singapore, I haven't been for a few years, so can't remember the lay of the place - I usually know good places to eat sensibly etc. Still it's not an unhealthy cuisine, I guess.

Tomorrow I quit sugar
Cantseethewoods · 25/08/2017 07:01

If you just google "healthy eating singapore" or "clean eating singapore" you'll get tonnes of cafe/ take out suggestions with veggie/vegan foods. I guess it depends where you are though. Do you stay out near Changi or in town? I'm going to Singapore next month for work and a 40th - love that place. Wish we could move there other than I'd miss having seasons and there's no mountains to run through.

Day 16. Not a bad week for me so far and hovering just above 65kg, so 2kg loss since I started. Yesterday:

B: banana and 2 hard boiled eggs
S: Iced soy latte
L: Korean style tuna poke bowl
S: 3 garibaldis Go ahead biscuits (yeah, I know.)
D: Rotisserie chicken with salad
S: orange

I've also been mega diligent on exercise- done all 4 of my strength sessions and been running.

DD's party tomorrow so will definitely be having a piece of b'day cake - my friend is making it and she is the goddess of cake making. I'll give my sister what's left to take into work with her though. Otherwise I eat cake for a week.

gunsandbanjos · 25/08/2017 07:18

Got a staff night out later, will eat before I go but there will definitely be cocktails... will try and be careful!

gunsandbanjos · 25/08/2017 08:22

For anyone interested, my food today looks like:
Coffee with cream
Parma ham and Gouda, coffee with cream
2 egg omelette with chorizo, onion, red pepper, mushrooms and cheese
2 litres of water
Cocktails and gin...

Good luck with the PILs and shopping overcome.

I am back in belfast visiting my family. I don't know what we will be eating today and the weather is miserable. DS is getting frustrated by his inability to crawl. DM expects me to iron Shock and DD was up from 2.15am until after 3.30am. More tea please!

Re the granola - I weigh it. 20g is plenty to add crunch without packing in the calories.

Had some potentially sad news today my mum got a letter from doc saying they are concerned she is pre diabetes. Hopefully it's nothing and with adjustments to diet she can ward it off. She was so sad and also confused. She thinks she doesn't have any sugar because she eats brown bread and doesn't eat a lot of chocolate. I didn't have the heart to point out the constant mochas and slices of cake. My mum is a great baker and I have been brought up with the attitude that a slice of cake a day does no harm. My family have a serious coffee and cake treat habit! We also snack constantly on crisps! This and the growing awareness of how much sugar is in stuff is a huge wake up call!

honeyroar · 25/08/2017 10:20

Ooh that's hard Pandapop. Hope you can gently educate her (or the Drs can!).

It might not even be the granola, I don't have much, but the calories in it are way more than any other breakfast cereals, even the sugary crap ones (150 cals more!) so it's just got me wondering. I weighed myself today and another half a lb has gone on. So last week I lost two lbs, this week nearly all has gone back on, so I need to have a look through my food diary. I'm rushing around today, got a long, long day. I will do it Sunday when I'm in Singapore.

Overcome we stay in the centre, just by Raffles. There used to be a good soup and salad bar in the mall there, so hopefully it still is. I'd choose HKG any day over Singapore, I love the place. It's one of my favourites. Lucky you being there. Have you lived there long?

GoingRogue · 25/08/2017 11:44

honeyroar I live in the South West...do I remember you mentioning the penines? Might be a bit too far to nip and house sit, sadly! I used to house-sit for friends with three cats and a Great Dane before. Loved it, even if one of the cats used to terrorise the dog most evenings, and another brought me dead field mice Grin Best of luck at work and with the healthy eating. It's really annoying when the scales don't go the right way, isn't it? I think I'll have to start exercising if I want to shift the weight, and I loathe exercise.

pandapop17 Fingers crossed your Mum can avoid the type 2 diabetes with diet. My Mum had type 1 from when she was 30 to when she died aged 60, so I grew up with her injecting three times daily, hypos and hospital trips because she'd slipped into a diabetic coma. She was a drinker though, hence poorly managed diabetes.

I have had yet another bad nights sleep, it's doing my head in. Asleep around 11/11.30, then I wake at 1am, 3am, 5am and then up around 6.30 due to ds2. I never used to have a problem before I cut right back on sugar? Am almost at the two week point so was hoping it would have settled by now Hmm

Cantseethewoods · 25/08/2017 12:24

Eight years this week! Came for two. Never left Grin. On the weight thing, I put on a kilo the first week. Was just hormonal as my boobs got massive. I deflated in week 2.

randomer · 25/08/2017 15:11

Sorry is the gist of this avoid sugar? Are there other rules 😌 please
