Tomorrow I quit sugar

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

That's quick isn't it!

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 20/08/2017 17:55

Ok so day 1 today hadn't been shopping until lunchtime so breakfast was a bit crap.
Breakfast - bowl shreddies and milk. Then DH made pancakes and I did have one with syrup.
Lunch - half a tuna sandwich. Few cheese and crackers.
Dinner- roast chicken, stuffing, gravy, parsnips, carrots, Swede, peas and gravy.
Drinks water and 3 cups of tea each with a sweetener in but will tackle that tomorrow.

Also now I've been shopping can actually have some fruit tomorrow and a better breakfast!

honeyroar · 20/08/2017 18:12

I've had a funny day. Had the granola with yoghurt and berries at 6.30 this morning and then we went out to an international horse trials for the day. I had a flapjack with a latte about 11, but struggled st lunch as there was hardly anything veggie or healthy available. I ended up with a cheese and onion pie, which I didn't even particularly want (doubly annoying!). I only ate about half and the dogs got the rest. We walked about six miles too, so won't be too much damage! Probably be pesto for dinner, I'm tired.

Out tomorrow again for another horsey day supporting at the Pony club championship, so will be walking around again all day. I called at M&S food on the way home and bought a few veggie things so I'm more prepared.

Just an aside, but I looked at the calories this morning in my bowl of granola and nearly cholked! 500cals/100gs and more than in my husband's full sugar granola! Still, it's healthy calories and seems to be working (and tastes gorgeous!)

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 20/08/2017 18:21

I've never actually tried granola!
Tomorrow I have the orthodontist which might limit what I can eat for a few days. I'm due a jaw op so really hoping tomorrow will get referred to surgeons. Been 17 months in train track braces now!

honeyroar · 20/08/2017 19:53

I used to have those braces as a teen, I don't remember them as fun. Hope your op gets arranged.

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 20/08/2017 20:00

Thanks. Sorry bit self indulgent and off topic!

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 20/08/2017 20:01

Craving something sweet now :(

bibblebobblebubble · 20/08/2017 21:03

Right I'm in!

Gave up added sugar products back in February (chocolate, biscuits, cake). I felt wonderful after the initial shock - clear skin, more energy, way less food cravings and by August I'd lost almost a stone. Also joined a gym and started getting fit.

But then holidays hit and aargh it's all gone to pot. Started on the sugar again and haven't been able to stop. Fell well and truly off the wagon.

So I want to commit to you random bunch of strangers that tomorrow it all re-starts. Cold turkey on added sugar. And I will get back to exercising too. I will post again tomorrow just to hold myself to it!

To all those considering or teetering... it is SO worth it. I felt a million times better without it. Maybe some can do moderation but it's such addictive stuff I think getting it out of life altogether is much easier than the constant struggle to keep it under limits. Go everyone!!!!

honeyroar · 20/08/2017 22:18

Welcome bibblebobblebubble. You've not been off the wagon long, you'll get back on it easy enough. I'd fallen off too for about five weeks, and now feel well and truly committed again (largely thanks to these lovely ladies on this page and their vibes). And it feels especially good to know you can have a little blip (or five week one in my case!) and get back into it again..

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 20/08/2017 22:41

So will doing this help with my insatiable hunger? Tiredness? Mood swings?

honeyroar · 20/08/2017 22:47

Yes once you've got over the initial bit. You can eat if you're hungry, you've just got to pick something healthy - for me it's Greek yoghurt with grapes or berries, I have it nearly every night while I'm at home. Bananas also help, or a handful of nuts. In my opinion you've got to enjoy what you're eating and find new "go to" food.

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 20/08/2017 22:49

Not just mainline cheese then! Wink

Cantseethewoods · 21/08/2017 05:50

Happy Monday/ GOT day everyone!

Managed to stay on track yesterday despite mild hangover

B: banana and 2 pints of water
S: Fresh coconut (drank the water and ate the flesh)
L: tofu and vegetable stir fry with brown rice
S: babybel
D: tuna poke bowl with Korean fire sauce and extra shredded cabbage, carrot and cucumber

Did a fair bit of trail running over the weekend but it's just so hot (35 ish) that it's total purgatory.

GoingRogue · 21/08/2017 08:13

Whatshouldmyusernamebe

So will doing this help with my insatiable hunger? Tiredness? Mood swings?

That's the main reason I'm giving up the white stuff. It's only been a week, but I swear I'm less hungry (during the day; Still hungry at night some nights), less tired especially the mid-afternoon slump and fingers crossed for fewer pmt symptoms next week. A PP said they just feel more steady without sugar and I'm starting to get what she meant (think it was cant who said it).

Good luck at the Orthodontist today Flowers

Welcome to bibblebobblebubble! I'm just gonna...

-----------------

(That's me drawing a line under the weekend...too much wine and snacking on crisps...and a bit of chocolate).

Just so I can remind myself, and maybe help any newbies, these are the main principles I WILL be following this week.

  1. No refined sugar or sweeteners
  2. Stay clear of anything packaged which has sugar listed in the top 3 ingredients, and/or more than 5g sugar per 100g.
  3. Don't be hungry. Fill up on healthy food such as eggs, fruit, full fat Greek yoghurt with berries and low-sugar granola, nuts, cheese etc
  4. Drink plenty of non-sweet drinks and water.
  5. Post on here for support!

Have a good day everyone. Can't wait for GoT. DH has to work at 9pm (from home) so we're going to have to bribe the kids to stay upstairs and go to bed early so we can watch it before then!

GoingRogue · 21/08/2017 08:15

P.s OvercomeByGravity I'm Envy of you going to afternoon tea at Fortnum & Mason! You'll have to tell us all about it (Just lie about the sugary stuff and tell us it was horrible haha).

GoingRogue · 21/08/2017 08:40

Oh ffs, just realised I missed the main principle out of my list.

1A) JERF. Just Eat Real Food.

Medicinal sugar is medicinal. Here's that line
----

I will confess to a small scone with jam and clotted cream this morning. It was small, and I was sparing with the jam, and it had a lot sugar than the cupcakes loaded with icing that were the alternative. It won't open the floodgates.
