Tomorrow I quit sugar

OuchBollocks · 06/08/2017 17:29

I am OuchBollocks and I am a sugar addict. Not for me one square a day or a frozen curly wurly to take the edge off, no. I have it, I eat it, I want it more.

Last year I quit sugar for New Year, and stayed off minus one or two teeny slips until I got pregnant with DS, then being off alcohol and caffeine combined with the summer heat made the lure of a cold Fanta too hard to resist. Then I broke my leg and was bed bound and in pain and people brought chocolate to the hospital, and the meals all came with dessert, and then I had DS and more chocolate, then Easter and more chocolate, and although I've managed to drop a dress size so far with the 5:2 diet I need to jack in the white stuff. I am going to Ibiza in September '18 and I want to feel confident.

God help me,it's going to be hard. The rules are:
No sweet drinks, including artificial sweeteners
No chocolate, sweets, icecream, cake, sorbets, pastries, jam, marmalade etc etc
No crisps
Read labels of sauces carefully to check sugar levels.

I will update this thread for my own personal records. I am going to kiss sugar goodbye with the slice of cheesecake that is waiting for me after dinner. Goodbye sugar, it's been fun :(

I have less than half a teaspoon.

msrisotto · 19/08/2017 07:56

Do mice get addicted to gambling? The question came to mind when you said you would sooner liken sugar addiction to gambling than heroin. It sounds comical.

Bread and breakfast foods really piss me off. WHY is there sugar in bread? I don't want to make my own fecking bread and i'm sure they use it as a preservative but it's just pervasive, sugar is everywhere. And breakfast. Most yoghurts are out, cereals, muesli, bread, pastries of course and any cereal bar. All choc full of sugar.

You have to go to so much effort to avoid it. Lucky for me, I have the time. I make porridge or fridge oats and I have spent far far far too long reading ingredients lists and finally found a (Dorset cereals) Muesli without added sugar (including all the different words for it and including artificial sugars) and I am trying to wean myself off jam but am settling on that for now.

Good luck for the weekend everybody. It's my most tempting time of the week.

honeyroar · 19/08/2017 08:18

There's sugar in bread etc because people like it more and buy it more...

The Sugar Addiction book said it was a chemical reaction to sugar, but I can't remember it properly. I certainly feel like quitting sugar was like quitting another addiction I've had (smoking).

As for the avoiding calories changing to avoiding sugar, I don't think counting calories is good. It's much better to eat the nuts than the sweets, even though years of doing weight watchers screams at me not to. Healthy, natural real food has GOT to be the better choice. There's so much rubbish and things you don't realise in processed food, that's the main problem.. I feel like this is the only time ever that I've been successful losing weight because I've not counted anything or beaten myself up. And on slimming world/ww it was always the choc/biscuits- even their diet versions- that pulled me off the waggon, so I had to sort that.

(I still have the odd Diet Coke, heck even the odd biscuit/chocolate now again too, but I've lost the all consuming greed I used to have for it).

Day 11 for me! It's so great to hear all you guys are doing well and we all seem to be taking any little slips in our stride.

It's amazing just how social eating sugar is, isn't it. Cake and sweets at work, birthdays, when people come back from holidays, because it's Friday....! I stopped drinking alcohol just under a year ago and I swear it's more socially awkward telling people you don't eat sugar! 😑

The foods I have been eating loads of are:

  • Lizis Granola OBVS because it's delicious
  • Itsu Miso soup sachets (veggie) also very very delicious, fill the gap if I'm hungry till next meal and only 40 cals
  • Greek yogurt full fat
  • Berries (am spending a fortune on them so might try the bags of frozen ones before I bankrupt us)
  • Nut butters (almond, pistachio and peanut) love them with apple slices or on oatcakes

Loving this thread! We are doing it Smile

humanfemale · 19/08/2017 09:10

I am going to give Overnight Oats a try tonight for tomorrow's breakfast! Will have a look on Pinterest for good recipes and report back.

GoingRogue · 19/08/2017 09:35

Cantseethewoods haha I don't hate you! I think because I've been doing SW on/off for years I know there are lots of "syns" in nuts, cereal bars, dried fruit etc. I suppose some might blindly think they are ok to eat endless quantities of.

Whatshouldmyusernamebe I've been having half a teaspoon of sugar in my tea for around a year. Last few weeks I've tried to cut down to quarter (Just the tip of the teaspoon really). I've been cutting out processed sugar for the last 7 days and guess what?! .... Fanfare please everyone...

I've just had tea with NO SUGAR in it!! Shock Smile The first cup was a but meh, but I didn't pull a disgusted face like I would have done ten days ago. The second cup was fine. I reckon in a day or two I'll be enjoying it just as much as I always have - fingers crossed! If I can do it - so can you!

So for breakfast this morning I had two slices of that protein bread toasted (it's only a 400g/hobbit loaf so I felt the need for two slices Hmm). On top I had ham, wilted spinach, two poached eggs and a sprinkling of red leicester. It was divine! Really need to get a grip on my portion sizes though; it was enough for two people.

I subconsciously think when something is healthy I can have twice the amount. I'm literally Marjory from Fat Fighters ! Grin

Anyway, off to my friend's 70th birthday party today. The sun is shining and the champagne will be flowing, so I'll be kicking back and enjoying.

Oh, weigh day for me on a Sat and scales say I've lost 1.5lbs this last week, so I'm chuffed (though am starting to realise relying on numbers on a machine for happiness/proof of success is really not the way forward).

Sainsbury's do bags of frozen mixed berries for £2.

honeyroar · 19/08/2017 10:00

I think I'm actually going to go blackberry picking for the first time this year, and freeze them. I saw quite a few almost ready when I was out with the dogs yesterday.. I've spent a fortune on fruit since I've been doing this, but it's worth it! I cancelled a weight watchers direct debit at the end of last year, I'd been doing it on and off for years - losing a stone then falling off the wagon. I'd spent £800 in the last few years on it when I added it up. 😳

Cantseethewoods · 19/08/2017 12:01

Blackberrying seems like a great idea. I still find it really hard to actually pay for blackberries (love them, so I do) but make me feel like a massive townie when I'm doing it Grin

honeyroar · 19/08/2017 12:31

Yes it grates me every time I buy them, knowing I had loads growing around the area where I live! Not my favourite berry though, but they'll be good to hack in a few things. I wish I had a vineyard, I get through so many grapes, but they wouldn't be so good from the Pennines!

humanfemale · 19/08/2017 14:29

I just made apple and cinnamon overnight oats and it's in the fridge. Recipe included 1tbs of maple syrup which I left out, since it has apple for sweetness and the almond milk I used was sweetened too.

Hoping it turns out well because I do need some options for when I'm starving that aren't

a) a billion calories worth of peanut butter, eaten straight from the jar or

b) loads and loads of toast and butter

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 19/08/2017 19:31

Right back from holiday boo and had my birthday. Will go food shopping tomorrow. Any recommendations?

Where do I get that granola from?

honeyroar · 19/08/2017 21:39

Overcome that doesn't actually sound like much food. You might sleep better if you added a banana or handful of nuts later on perhaps?

And take heart, im a natural hourglass but had turned into a pudding with no waist, however within a couple of weeks I lost a good inch off my waist - even before I'd lost any weight. You'll get back to what you were.

honeyroar · 19/08/2017 21:40

Sainsbury's and Tesco both do the granola.

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 19/08/2017 21:44

I always find I feel a bit overwhelmed when trying to do something like this! Meal planning for all of us have one very fussy child and a husband who likes big dinners and doesn't eat seafood which i love. Also trying to buy healthy stuff and not do end a fortune. So hard to accommodate everyone isn't it.

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 19/08/2017 21:45

Thanks honeyroar will have a look tomorrow.

OvercomeByGravity I was waking frequently in the night last week too (was my first week on this new diet). Seems to have settled down now hopefully. Fingers crossed for a better night tonight.

My healthy plan went a bit awry today...

B: as above (toast/egg/ham/spinach)
S: Apple and peach
L: Pulled pork bap, potato salad, a bottle of prosecco, a pint of cider, carrot cake and a Lindt Lindor ball ! Blush
D: Low-sugar granola with seeds and nuts. A choc ice...

Tomorrow is another day (and I did really enjoy the party).

Whatshouldmyusernamebe Along with the other suggestions for your shopping, maybe ham, eggs, cheese and peanut butter?

honeyroar · 19/08/2017 22:58

Love it GoingRogue! 😃 As long as you had a good day.

I've had the laziest day! But I've eaten ok.

B- Lily's granola, Greek yog and berries.

S - banana. Apple. Hula hoops (!)

L - scrambled eggs on multi seed toast.

D - chick pea and veg curry with cous cous

S - grapes and Greek yogurt.

How about eggs on that list? Would they eat frittata or omelette? Simple roast dinner is a good one. Bolognaise if you do it yourself?

Cantseethewoods · 20/08/2017 02:56

Ha ha Going Rogue. Mine was a bit similar

B: Banana, 2 cups of tea
L: tomato and mozzarella salad
S: 2 babybel, soy latte, orange, glass of wine (kids party)
D: Tapas

So far so good.........Oh, but between S and D and over D I had a cocktail, 2 glasses of champagne and half a bottle of cava.

I'm pretty sure that meets the definition of binge drinking and then some. Ugh.

Whatshouldmyusernamebe · 20/08/2017 08:53

None of my family would eat frittata or omelette. I would. But yes to roast dinner and Bolognese. My fussy child won't eat roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, chips, pastry. None of that is healthy though but hard work sometimes. He lives on pasta and jacket potatoes!

GoingRogue · 20/08/2017 09:44

I have a fussy 3yo so feel your pain. He outright refuses rice or potato in any form (apart from Nana's roast potatoes on occasion...I think he eats them out of fear). I can't be doing with giving him his beloved bread and pasta every day, or cooking separate meals, so he has rice every Friday night when we have curry, and potatoes on a Sunday with a roast. He's getting a bit better. He won't touch eggs, and we're lucky if he touches veg (hence why his pasta has home made hidden veg sauce all over it).

Think I'm going to do a Bolognese this week as not done one in a while.

Just had the most lovely breakfast of two fried eggs, mushrooms, spinach, ham and one small slice of buttered toast. All washed down with my sugar-free tea. Hurrah. Off out for the day so hoping for lots or walking.

Happy Sunday everyone!
