Sugar free February

twostonetolose · 29/01/2017 22:15

Hello.

I have seen that there is a thread about sugar free January and I was wondering if anyone fancied joining me for a sugar free February?

I am really good all day and then at five o'clock something happens and I turn into the Cookie Monster and am forced to eat as much as I can as quickly as I can...this evening alone I have eaten one cupcake, two scones and a slice of cake...seriously what is wrong with me!?!?

I am not sure whether it should be carbs or just sugary treats etc...I think carbs may be a step too far.
So my plan is to give this a whirl...please join me for some moral support.

Day 5!!!!!!! Surely we are over the hardest bits now!

Hi sillydog. I'm with fudge if I want this to be sustainable then I need to be able to do it even when there are sugary treats in the house. I am going to try to get my Dh and dcs to cut back but as a previous post said...I need to do this by stealth!!!

Good luck today everyone!!

I'm so stupid! I made some dairy free banana pancakes for the dc (intolerance issues) they contain 1 banana, 2 eggs and a sprinkling of cocoa powder. No added sugar in that but I then chucked on some dark chocolate chips! It was the first time I'd made them so ate one and then thought duh! It was only 5 chocolate chips but just annoying all the same

SerialReJoiner · 05/02/2017 13:58

Ah well flowers, onwards and upwards!

I'm at a buffet lunch with tons of treats on offer. I keep telling myself it isn't worth the temptation; I am never satisfied with just one.

987flowers · 05/02/2017 14:31

Good luck with the buffet!

I've got over myself now and put it in perspective! I'll be good the rest of the day. I have to say it tasted really sweet so I'm wondering if my taste buds are starting to adjust?

Mysillydog · 05/02/2017 14:35

Just had Sunday lunch and now craving something sweet. I shall be good and either have fruit or nothing. It's hard though.

GVmama · 05/02/2017 20:54

Congrats everyone on completing day 5, I've gone sugar free before and found the first few days are always the hardest (-then it seems super easy until the next birthday/ pre menstrual moment, where I fall off the wagon!!)

I've put my first star on my naff homemade little star chart. It's not quite as satisfying as four chocolate digestives, but nearly!

If I complete the full month I'm going to treat myself to a new pair of jeans Smile

Stillivinginazoo I think there are a few apps you can download to help you increase your water intake. Worth a try?

muddypuddled · 05/02/2017 21:20

Hi all, is it too late to join? I've been trying to have a sugar free February but not doing well so far! I do well until the afternoon and then I can't stop craving! Any ideas for sugar free snacks? I would just lock all sugary things away but I'd feel bad for dh! I've found that fruit and fibre from Lidl is quite low in sugar and the sugar is coming from the dried fruit so I'm allowing myself that. Help please!!

Mysillydog · 05/02/2017 21:28

Hi muddy
It's quite hard, isn't it. I did dry January a few years ago and that was easier because I don't drink every day.
I managed to resist sweet treats this afternoon, and I am upping my fruit intake as a substitute which is good.

Stilllivinginazoo · 06/02/2017 10:47

Morning everyone. With two poorly kids (chesty coughs, one diagnose chest infection.think others go be diagnose at gp visit book for Tom)I feel really tired and stressed and my automatic response would be chocolate and sweets to help me thru.I know there's a stray galaxy bar on cupboard that belongs to kids but I am adamant I will not eat it!!
Had now usual breakfasts yogurt and blueberries. Add a couple Brazil nuts today in hope that will help me avoid succumb cravings.I totally believe what I've read sugars as addictive as crack cocaine

pasanda · 06/02/2017 11:51

Well done everyone, it sounds like we are all doing really well!
I still haven't caved but it is becoming harder and harder not to! Yesterday I did a 13 hour shift at work and one of the patients bought in 5, yes 5, boxes of chocolates Shock. Roses, a chocolate orange, ferraro roche (hate them luckily, and probably can't spell them!!) etc etc.

I did not have ONE! But omg it was so hard. I found myself putting a mini marshmallow into my mouth on Saturday (dd was having a hot chocolate with them on the top), swirling it around then spitting it out!

I really don't think if I had a piece of chocolate, sweet or whatever I would find it really sweet and be put off it Confused. I just can't see that ever happening to me so I know that I will cave eventually .... it's just when??

(makes me wonder if I'm going it properly to be honest)

BlueSofaPinkLamp · 06/02/2017 11:53

For uping water intake, just drink more and your body will start wanting more. I drink gallons of the stuff and get thirsty if I go longer than an hour or so without some!

I found full fat dairy really good for sugar cravings, there's something inherently satisfying about cheese that I find it stops any cravings.

Yesterday I had kefir (fermented milk drink) for breakfast, roast chicken, homemade sausage meat stuffing, a tonne of veg and a roast potato for lunch followed by a chicken mayo sandwich on homemade malted bread for dinner with a few crisps and lots of veg sticks and houmous.

I made a rhubarb and vanilla crumble cake to use up some rhubarb in the afternoon and did have a small mouthful of my husband''s slice to see how it turned out but wasn't bothered by not having any more. 5 weeks of no sugar so far and it's definitely getting almost effortless.

Todays food....

Breakfast: bacon, mushroom, onion and cheese omelette with salad

Lunch: chicken and avocado salad with a handful of crisps

Snack: probably Greek yoghurt and berries

Dinner: cajun salmon with garlicy greens and beans

Stilllivinginazoo · 06/02/2017 12:21

pasanda very impressed you resisted 5lots chocolate
bluesofa your post gives me hope
Just going have lunch
Rice, baked cod and veg

SerialReJoiner · 06/02/2017 12:27

pasanda I am the same and really don't have an upper limit. I polish off an entire tub of mini meringues and easily have more after, for example. Just one or two bites would simply open the doors to a tidal wave of cravings. It's easier for me to not eat it at all, then try (and fail) to practice moderation.

pasanda · 06/02/2017 13:31

I'm eating so many grapes instead of chocolates I swear my pooh is turning green!!! Grin

muddypuddled · 06/02/2017 14:09

Doing better today so far, breakfast was avocado on toast, lunch was a mozzarella and pesto panini. Tea will be roast chicken and leek pie (homemade) and veg. I need to try and cut down on the bread though I think as that has quite a bit of sugar but I can work on that! I'm not really into fruit so I think maybe carrot sticks for a snack may do it? Bought a plastic box with a lid today and I intend on putting all of the and sugary snacks in there and putting it out of reach so I can't be tempted. My friend has gone as far as banning milk due to the sugar content but I think that would make life far too miserable!!

AFingerofFudge · 06/02/2017 14:43

Well I was kind of hoping by now that I would have somehow reached a fantastic peak of feeling healthy and happy. But no. I just still feel miserable and unhappy and low mood which is really unlike me as I'm generally fairly perky most of the time
It's like I'm feeling sorry for myself, depriving myself of sugar, when the reality is I'm doing myself a favour! Grrrrr!!!!

florencerusty · 06/02/2017 16:54

Help!!! and its not even me. The OH has decided sugar free is worth a try for losing some weight. He has other issues (low testosterone, under active thyroid and buggered knees!) so losing weight is really tough. He has decided to do this whilst I was sleeping and to be honest he has bitten off more than he can chew and has tonight come home with a raging headache and the mood of an angry bear. He is reading nutritional info rather than ingrediants and then arguing with me about what he should and shouldnt eat! He also decided to ditch milk for reasons best known to himself. Anyone have a simple way to explain to him what he ought to avoid and what he could still have?

Mysillydog · 06/02/2017 22:26

Angry bears? I have no advice I'm afraid, but husbands can be stubborn creatures.

I managed to avoid sugar today and snacked on nuts, seeds and dried fruit. I wanted a Kit Kat. I went for a Brie and tomato roll for lunch and I think having the full fat cheese did help stave off the sugar cravings.

thereisnocheese · 06/02/2017 23:03

Can I join in? I've just completed my first low sugar day. Heres what I had: whole meal toast one slice and half an avocado, an apple, cashew nuts as snacks, chicken ramen bowl for lunch and veggie tofu stir fry for dinner... drank loads of water and peppermint tea. One day down six to go for my first week

Badgerlady · 07/02/2017 20:56

Hello and welcome nocheese

How is everyone doing? I'm getting over my Diet Coke cravings I think. But have noted an increase in cappaccino consumption. Trying to limit any damage by having small skinny ones. Not gallons of full fat milk!

I'm covering in another office tomorrow and they have already said there will be chocolate to thank the cover staff so that will be a test. Will have apples and tea at the ready.

SerialReJoiner · 07/02/2017 22:06

Well, I'm going back on my bold assertion that I would do a 16:8 fast as well as no sugar. One or t'other, methinks. I'm sticking with no sugar for now. That'll do, as far as challenges go!

Sick child today. Very tired. Wanted sugar to perk me up, but the craving passed quite quickly. It's getting easier.

987flowers · 08/02/2017 12:54

I'm not doing too badly at the moment but I do miss having a biscuit to dunk in my cup of tea after lunch!

Can anyone think of a substitute?

Stilllivinginazoo · 08/02/2017 13:10

A ginger flavour oatcake?
Is have no will power not rat whole box though

I have PMS and would trample my own children not for sweets or choc but crusty white breadConfusednew one on me.I usually think nothing eat at least 2bars choc and a large bag wine gums/midget gems/any sweet confectionery

Not sure best way forward through that
Breakfast today-greek yogurt,blueberries and Brazil's
Lunch-rice cakes with avocado and tomatoes.carrot sticks
