Sugar free February

twostonetolose · 29/01/2017 22:15

Hello.

I have seen that there is a thread about sugar free January and I was wondering if anyone fancied joining me for a sugar free February?

I am really good all day and then at five o'clock something happens and I turn into the Cookie Monster and am forced to eat as much as I can as quickly as I can...this evening alone I have eaten one cupcake, two scones and a slice of cake...seriously what is wrong with me!?!?

I am not sure whether it should be carbs or just sugary treats etc...I think carbs may be a step too far.
So my plan is to give this a whirl...please join me for some moral support.

Hi pasanda I am exactly the same as I don't drink tea or coffee either...am going to go for fizzy water maybe with a dash of squash...is squash allowed?!?

You can make flavoured water by leaving (for example) a slice of orange, lemon or lime, or mint and cucumber, or some berries in a water bottle. It slightly infuses the water and makes it taste more exciting. Not tried it with fizzy water but imagine it could work.

I also quite like a teaspoon of bullion powder dissolved in boiling water. It's quite salty but hits that coffee spot!

pasanda · 01/02/2017 09:42

Yes, I didn't think squash was allowed Sad

Day 3 for me today and I feel like shit!! Shock I hope it doesn't last...

SerialReJoiner · 01/02/2017 10:19

Is there a list of rules somewhere I'm missing? Would be interested to read that.

BlueSofaPinkLamp · 01/02/2017 10:40

There is only one rule, surely, not to eat sugar? It's then up to you whether you include sweeteners as well.

Celestialstarlight · 01/02/2017 11:14

Hello everyone. I'd love to join you please. I have been cleating off and on since july and lost a stone which I put back on over Christmas. Eating completely clean isn't subtainable for me so I've decided to try and cut out refined sugar instead to see if I can lose some weight. I'm about 2 stone overweight with huge boobs and a belly to match and at only 5"2 I look and feel like a wee barrel. I'm exactly the same as the OP. I do so well during the day then in the evening I completely fall apart, then out comes the wine and crisps. So I'm determined this time and feel exited to have you guys on the journey with me Smile

Thanks claire...although I think cutting sugar from my kid's diet may result in world war 3...not something I am ready for yet.

So far so good today...drinking water with a tiny dash of squash and had salad and tuna mayo for lunch. Don't feel too bad but let's be honest we are only 14.5 hours in!!!! Hope you are all doing well too.

Me me! I'm doing this! No sugar or things with sugar in but keeping carbs and fruit because otherwise I think I'll die.

CrowRoad · 01/02/2017 17:55

Ok I'm in - but a day late. I've had the remains of my DD's birthday cake today and felt rough as. I've had enough of the sugar roller coaster.

I'm going to allow myself 1/2 tsp honey in my plain Greek yoghurt and my homemade granola as usual but everything else is out for Feb.

Last time I gave up sugar I lost 10lb in one month. Crazy!!!

twostonetolose · 01/02/2017 20:26

So how has everyone done today?

OP posts:
SerialReJoiner · 01/02/2017 20:49

Lots and lots of fruit. Mental gnashing of teeth over not being able to devour chocolate and biscuits. Knowing I don't really want to eat them as such, but still feeling the cravings anyway. It'll get easier soon.

user1485196412 · 01/02/2017 21:11

I managed nothing sweet! Woo hoo! Need to get some healthy non sugar snacks in though if I'm going to keep this up. What are other people doing for snacks? Twostone how did you do?

ClaireRaisingSugarFreeKids · 01/02/2017 21:37

user1485196412 - for snacks, try things like roasted vegetables, homemade vegetable crisps, homemade dips with raw veg, fresh fruit, nuts or seeds, plain full-fat yogurt, cacao (nibs/powder with warm milk/etc), boiled eggs, or mix 1 cup peanut butter with 1 egg and make "cookies" that you can bake at 180C for about 10-15 mins. They are pretty yummy. :)

Buttwing · 01/02/2017 21:56

I've had a good day today

B-coffee
L-fruit, fat free Greek yogurt and walnuts
D-steak and avocado salad

I did have a glass of red but we went out which doesn't happen that often (4 young dc) so I thought sod it. I've drank a fair bit of water but could do better.

Badgerlady · 01/02/2017 22:55

Well done all!

User: nothing sweet is awesome.

Buttwing: that sounds a pretty darn healthy day to me.

Managed last two days without any added sugar or sweeteners. Had a late evening a work today and was battling getting a dizzy drink/hot chocolate to keep me going.

I've always been a fan of home made popcorn with cinnamon or salt and a touch of paprika. When it's hot it really nice. And I still find it quasi magical watching it pop!

twostonetolose · 02/02/2017 07:25

Ok one day down 27 to go!!!!! I was referred yesterday under the two week wait for ?colon cancer so it is amazing that I didn't eat 17bars of chocolate last night!!!

Other than that minor blip (hysterical crying by me and panic by family!!) yesterday went really well. Tuna salad for lunch and then salmon with veg for tea. Apple for putting to curb the sweet craving and a little bit of squash to make sure I am drinking enough!!!!

Day 2 here we come!!!! Hopefully will hear from the hospital today!!

SerialReJoiner · 02/02/2017 07:27

Oh, twostone that is rough. Thinking of you today.

twostonetolose · 02/02/2017 08:24

Thank you serial. I know I am worst casing but I just keep thinking about what my kids are going to do if something happens to me...I don't even know I have the bloody disease yet!!!!

OP posts:
SerialReJoiner · 02/02/2017 11:06

Oh I'd be doing the same thing. Flowers

pasanda · 02/02/2017 12:56

Nightmare twostone but well done on the low sugar!

Thanks for the snack tips Claire Smile I am finding I often feel low on blood sugar - you know all shaky and starving but not sure what to snack on other than fruit, which I don't want to go overboard on at this early stage. I tried some oatcakes with hummus earlier and they were pretty nice.

Breakfast today was marmite on toast and right now I am having turkey and cheese salad with olive oil and lemon juice. NOT something I would ever have had in the past! I am finding I am seeking out the cheese and meat for the taste.

I have never drunk so much water (going to the loo all the bloody time) and it's OK but because I don't drink anything else it's pretty blood boring.

It would be great if everyone wrote what they have eaten each day so we can give each other inspiration. What does everyone else think?

PS does anyone know when the headaches and feeling knackered all the time side effects go??

pasanda · 02/02/2017 13:00

Just finished the salad and am actually pretty stuffed!! Smile Smile

ClaireRaisingSugarFreeKids · 02/02/2017 14:01

Pasanda - withdrawal symptoms vary from person to person. The less sugar you eat, the more intense they are but the better you feel in the long run. For example, I followed the I Quit Sugar 8-Week Program when I first gave up sugar 2 years ago and it involved giving up all sugar including all fruit & sweeteners for 4 weeks, and the withdrawal symptoms (especially headaches and fatigue) were pretty bad for a week or two, but it meant that my tastebuds changed and cravings stopped and I actually found myself enjoying and craving savoury fresh foods more. So it was worth a week of headaches. If you don't give up as much, the addiction may continue, although to a lesser extent as you are possibly able to consume less sugar to feel satisfied, so you may get some withdrawal symptoms for a few days or a week at most. Some people get them worse than others though... Snacks can be tough at first, but having been low-no sugar for 2 years now, I actually find my body craves real food and I tend to end up eating filling, balanced meals 3 times a day and not actually snacking much, if at all, the rest of the time.

pasanda · 02/02/2017 18:12

Thanks for that Claire I will keep going and hope it all passes sooner rather than later! I guess it is a big shock to the system to no longer have a big glass of juice and a diet coke by 11am every day Grin

I am finding the longer I go (4 days in now!), the more inclined I am to be stricter with myself. But I am not going completely no sugar in that I am eating fruit and a very small amount of bread. I've managed to avoid ketchup & mayonnaise so far though which I'm pleased about.

twostonetolose · 02/02/2017 18:19

Evening all.

Great idea pasanda. Today I have had fresh tomato soup and a wholemeal roll for lunch. 2 x cheddar cheese slice wrapped in ham for snacks. And am going to have chicken veg and rice for tea.

I don't feel too bad yet but I know the withdrawal is coming.

I have an appt with the surgeons at the hospital tomorrow so I am feeling really positive about all of that!!

How is everyone else getting on?
