New week, new thread

WWB - oopps , sorry, MS is me! Which means I miscalculated when I posted yesterday - must be the lack of wholesome sugary foods that does it!

The dash to the doc's sounds scary - hope all is ok now.

WigWamBam · 12/01/2007 12:09

Ah ... all becomes clear Have amended your card to show 4.5lb.

Dd had a large amount of blood in her wee last night, it was all a bit panicky, and when I spoke to our out-of-hours service they made a really big thing about it all - we had to get her straight to the hospital, she was whisked through in front of everyone else ... it was all rather alarming. She's got some antibiotics and we will probably have to take her for a scan next week but hopefully it's just a bog-standard UTI.

Hi there, this is my first time posting on Mumsnet, so not entirely sure if it'll work! I'm a WeightWatching mum and am keen to join in with this BigMoFo malarky, but I've only just discovered it! What's it all about and how do I get started (if I'm allowed!)

WigWamBam · 12/01/2007 12:28

Hello songbird.

Most of us on the BigMoFo threads have a lot of weight to lose, but the threads are about attitude as much as anything. They were started because some of us felt out of place on threads full of 7 stone people posting about being bloaters, and being hard on themselves because they needed to lose 4lb. We just wanted a place where people understood how large people feel, and where we could feel supported in a way that those 7 stone people couldn't manage to support us. Most of us have more than 5 stone to lose, although there are a few who are smaller but who found that the ethos of the threads suited them.

We're all doing our own thing rather than following a particular diet, the threads are more for support and motivation than anything else really. We do a weekly weigh-in for those who want it, but not all of us weigh in. Some just follow the thread for support, whichever you would feel more comfortable doing. It's all pretty free and easy but it seems to work. Weigh-in day is Thursday, you can send me a starting weight if you want (which is purely between you, me and the fence post) or just send weekly losses - or not even bother with the weigh-in at all, if you prefer. Email is [email protected]

We only have one or two rules: No beating yourself up (we will do that for you if necessary). Each week is a new week and you leave last week?s problems behind. No pedantic grammar corrections (unless what you typed really doesn?t make sense); we are quite smart and will work out what you mean.

Thanks WWB (as I know everyone here calls you!). I find it very hard to talk to people I don't know; I'm not comfortable with small talk and always feel like people won't be interested in what I have to say, which means I haven't 'bonded' with anyone at WeightWatchers. For some reason it's easier to chat in this format! I think it's the communal spirit and advice that I like about Mumsnet.

WigWamBam · 12/01/2007 13:06

There's a lot of good, supportive conversation on these threads - and stacks of support on MN generally too. Although it sounds as if you've been lurking a bit so you'll have seen some of that.

I find it much easier to chat and "bond" with people here than in RL too, so I know exactly where you're coming from!

OP posts:
CheesyFeet · 12/01/2007 13:31

Hello Songbird

I find it easier to chat on board too. Do you think it might be down to lack of self confidence due to weight ishoos?? I am generally a wallflower at RL do's.

Hope your dd's OK WWB, it's scary when they are so poorly isn't it? When we had to take dd to A&E with a rash, hight temp etc they rushed her straight in too. It is frightening yet heartening at the same time that they take you seriously and that they start treatment asao.

I will email you my starting weight in a bit - I have posted it but just to be sure you pick it up (not literally of course )

JackieNo · 12/01/2007 13:32

Only just come onto MN as have been at a meeting all morning.

WWB - sorry to hear about your DD, and what a horrible night you must have had. Glad it all sounds as if it's under control now.

Congratulations to Agalch, BabySmurf and EeyoreIsFab. I hope to join you all in having actually lost some weight next week .

And welcome Songbird.

schneebly · 12/01/2007 13:33

WWB - I hope DD is okay - poor thing!

Songbird - welcome! I know what you mean about slimming club meetings. Been there.

CheesyFeet · 12/01/2007 13:57

Just read the end of the old thread

Glad you are unbunged Schneebly

Well done to everyone on the loser's list

I am coveting that crown now,it's veeeery pretty.

coppertop · 12/01/2007 14:06

Well done, everyone.

Welcome to Songbird.

I'm glad things were okay with mini-WWB (apart from having a UTI in the first place of course).

Songbird · 12/01/2007 14:36

Thanks everyone, I feel most welcome! I'll email my starting weight later, I can't remember it now. Was pleased this week to have only put on 2.5lbs over Christmas - must be MIL's revolting cooking. Crimble with my mum would have been a total disaster!

JackieNo · 12/01/2007 18:41

Looks like Sue might be on her way, finally. But I'll believe it when I see her post that she's back. She's had so much red tape to wade through, poor thing.

WigWamBam · 12/01/2007 19:58

I have everything crossed for her. I really hope that this is the end of it now, that she can bring Daniel home and start settling down with him properly.

Hi Guys,

Just quick post between returns!!!!

Well done to all you losers!
I'm glad mini WWB is ok and welcome Songbird!

I didn't get time to e-mail today but I've stayed the same which is a result with the amount of Junk I've been wolfing down this week! I can only assume that the stress is burning it off!

MrsJohnCusack · 12/01/2007 21:31

ah poor WWB and DD - hope she really is on the mend now
glad to see Sue might finally be on the way home.
and congratulations everybody!

justamum · 13/01/2007 01:32

WWB, I hope DD is ok now and that you have recovered too.(from the trauma)
Mrs JC did you get anywhere with finding a copy of Green Wing? it was on again last week but I didn't realise until it was half over.
Well done on losses everyone, I aim to join you next week. I spoke to my skinny cow dr today who basically said "eat less move more" but she has referred me to the practice nurse who does weight loss sessions and I'll take whatever help comes my way.
I must go to bed now, its half one

agalch · 13/01/2007 09:04

Hiya girls

Wasn't organised yesterday so wasn't as goog as i could have been but hey you can't be good all the time can you?

I do worry that i am super motivated atm for my wedding and when it's all over i will go back to usual and pile loads of weight on.Hopefully when i do lose weight it will feel so good that i will stay focused.

Awww thanks for giving me the crown of the week1st time ever getting a prize in anything lol.

Off to the last dress shop(thank god)have pretty much decided on one but better go see the last one.

Have a good one xx

Dottydot · 13/01/2007 09:34

WWB - sounds like you had quite a scare - hope your dd's OK.

Fauve · 13/01/2007 15:08

Hello, sorry I forgot to email you WWB - in any case, I stayed the same. I'm sleeping really badly, partly due to the high winds at night - and a bit of loose double glazing flapping about - so have rather lost the will to live, let alone diet. And of course various other things - it's so hard to stay focussed on looking after yourself when there's so much else to do, isn't it? I hope your dd's better, WWB - I expect you know that drinking cranberry juice really helps with UTIs. Nice to see some new members on here - welcome

Dottydot, the saga continues with ds and the possibility of him having coeliac disease - doctors disagree about the need for the endoscopy, so I will have to read up about it even more. I bought a book called Coping with Coeliac Disease by Karen Brody which has some US website details in the back, so I will get onto those. I feel like I'm about to become a complete coeliac disease nerd. Meanwhile I have to stuff as much gluten as I can into ds, so that any further tests show up any antibodies, sigh.

On the bright side, I am dressed for the gym as I type, so I WILL get out to it later on...the best bit for me is watching MTV and other TV, four screens all at the same time, bliss. Sometimes those endorphins really do kick in - and I could certainly do with some!

JackieNo · 13/01/2007 15:14

Oh Fauve, poor you - the not sleeping is a complete disaster isn't it - I find when it happens it's all you can do to get through the following day without losing it completely, and it's difficult to cope with the thought of dieting on top of that. Good on you for going to the gym though - maybe it'll help your body to rest tonight.

EeyoreIsFab · 13/01/2007 15:29

Happy Weekend Everyone!

Fauve - Sympathies for the sleepless nights from me too - my ds is 3 months now so we're just getting our sleep back

On the diet front I'm barely a week in & already in the need of a will-power boost. I suggested I hire the Paul McKenna book from the library to DH & he just laughed & thinks it's dead easy to not eat the nice foods you like

Dottydot · 13/01/2007 15:29

I'm rubbish on no sleep - need at least 8 hours a night to feel anywhere near human! (Another reason for not having any more children..!).

Fauve - when is your son's blood test? Ds2 (my biological ds) has got a blood test on Wednesday. We haven't altered his diet but he has cereal and bread every day so I think if he's got it it'll show.

Fauve · 13/01/2007 16:33

Well, ds has had two blood tests which show no sign of coeliac at all - so the consultant we are seeing in a couple of weeks is questioning whether he should have the biopsy. But the thing is, he deffo has the coeliac gene, and he has symptoms - stomach cramps, not relieved by paracetamol, not stress related - which lead to him being off school quite a bit. (He is 12, so not good to be off school a lot.) We feel there is a clear correlation with eating pizza and other gluteny food. I would be happy, however, for him to have more blood tests to establish whether he has nutritional deficiencies, if that would make the picture clearer. There just seem to be too many unknowns. I could live with him missing school if I didn't think that undiagnosed coeliac disease might be hindering his growth, which he should be doing a lot of right now. If he has the biopsy, he will have to have a general anaesthetic - but hey, he's a great big chap and can probably take it. On the other hand, I hesitate to put him through unnecessary surgical intervention.

Dottydot · 13/01/2007 16:52

It's so frustrating that the blood tests haven't shown up anything... Not that you want him to have it, but if he's got the symptoms at least you'd know for sure, 100%.

I know I've said it before, but I was the most scared person in the world before the biopsy - started threads on it, had sleepless nights, but it was absolutely fine. Don't remember anything and I'd be fine having another one - wouldn't worry at all.

Fingers crossed though for your ds - hope any further blood tests show something up you can work on.
