New week, new thread

OP posts:
Fauve · 13/01/2007 16:54

How old is your ds, DD? Are you just having him tested so you know, or has he got symptoms?

Dottydot · 13/01/2007 16:57

He's only 2.8 (so quite nervous about him having blood taken!) and hasn't got any symptoms, but then neither did I! My main/only symptom is being very anaemic and certainly dp and I have both noticed ds2 is very tired a lot of the time, sleeps a lot (even for a toddler!) and has dark circles under his eyes all the time. Could just be how he is, but could be Coeliac, so best to get a blood test at this stage so that we can change his diet if it's positive. If it is positive I think they'd probably want to do a biopsy - so I'll be worrying alongside you!!

Fauve · 13/01/2007 18:33

Sorry to hog the thread with this - next time I'll start a new one, honest! Last post from me, now, on this...

The dark circles and the tiredness would sound enough to warrant testing, DD. I also wonder about my dd, who has a permanently coated white tongue, indicating candida, but no other symptoms, so no tests yet.

I do think that my constant obsessing about what to feed the family is detrimental to my weight loss plans, though! Now, I'll just feed dh and ds, then off to the gym...

Littlefish · 14/01/2007 16:31

Hello all, sorry to hear about your dd wwb.

Fauve and Dotty, I hope you get some information soon on your ds's.

I know what you mean Fauve, about the obsessing about what you feed your family, interfering with weight loss.

Because we eat an almost exclusively organic diet, with almost no pre-packaged food, it rules out nearly all of the low-fat and no-fat foods like margarines etc.

In my previous weight-loss efforts, I have always relied on things like diet coke, fat free spreads, rice puddings etc. Now, all I can rely on is my will power !

Dh and I took dd for a swim yesterday at the gym I have just joined. Dh looked after her while I had a quick swim (only 6 lengths). I'd forgotten how much I love swimming! It was very quiet, hardly anyone around, and it's a very short walk from the changing rooms to the pool so I didn't feel too exposed.

I'm going back with dd on Monday afternoon, and on my own on Thursday afternoon.

JackieNo · 14/01/2007 17:20

of your swimming Littlefish, and getting to go on your own. I should try to do that.

Littlefish · 14/01/2007 17:22

I know, I'm very lucky. Dd is with my MIL every Thursday, all day, but I only work until lunchtime. I have decided to ignore the piles of washing, washing up and house tidying, and go swimming instead. Long term, it will be more beneficial. Short term, I will have to shut my eyes every time I come into the house!

JackieNo · 14/01/2007 17:26

Definitely a much better use of time. Must investigate the timetable at the pool DD goes to for her swimming lessons. I had vaguely thought of going straight from work on a Monday or Tuesday when DD is at after school club, but they only do general swimming on one of those days, I seem to remember.

Dottydot · 14/01/2007 17:32

I LOVE swimming! my parents-in-law belong to a nice (posh!) leisure club and they had 2 guest passes and I went swimming there with MIL a couple of weeks ago. Just wonderful to be able to go and swim with no kids!! Dp used the other pass last week and it's inspired us both to go swimming more often, but not sure of the logistics with the shift-type working patterns we do!

My eating's gone doolally as usual - am hoping to be back on track tomorrow at work.

Fauve · 14/01/2007 21:23

I'm feeling better today - thanks for all your nice posts I did manage to get to the gym on Sat - I'm sure I wouldn't have managed it if I hadn't written it down here. Swimming is lovely, isn't it, and once you get going, sometimes you don't want to stop. Amazingly, I managed to acquire an exercise machine thingy through Freecycle - so it cost nothing - and dh put it together today, so I had a little go (by elbowing aside dd and ds, natch). It's OK - though I'm not sure when I'll use it. Maybe when there's a good prog on Radio 4 I have to listen to. Maybe Desert Island Discs on a Friday AM. Full of good intentions, me - must be all that chocolate I'm eating...

JackieNo · 14/01/2007 22:05

Fauve. Glad you're feeling better.

Littlefish · 15/01/2007 07:50

Fauve - a great idea about Radio 4. I always exercise better when I'm listening to something. The last gym I belonged to had TV's on. I used to use the bikes for the length of Coronation Street or something else trashy! Made the time go much more quickly.

I love Desert Island Discs too!

CheesyFeet · 15/01/2007 10:06

Hi everyone

Exercising with music is loads easier isn't it? Littlefish, I used to watch crap telly at the gym too but I'm not a member any more, post-dd finances don't allow it. I've had a couple of injuries too which mean I haven't been allowed to exercise much (wow - what an excuse for sitting on your arse scoffing chocolate cake!). I've had the all clear from my physio to do gentle exercise so I do a scaled down version of the Rosemary Conley exercise class now.

I used to love swimming too, I went quite a lot when I was pg.

Good to hear there's lots of exercising going on.

I've had a great weekend diet-wise, lots of salad and brown bread. I have been feeling less hungry too which is great.

I read somewhere yesterday that someone of my weight needs about 2500-2700 kcals a day just to break even, I've been eating a lot less than that but not as low as the 1200 that Rosemary advocates for the first two weeks.

Good luck everyone, here's to a good week

schneebly · 15/01/2007 13:20

oh shit! I have just eaten 12 jaffa cakes.

schneebly · 15/01/2007 13:21

It is nerves - am waiting on exam results

Littlefish · 15/01/2007 13:22

Go out for a walk immediately Schneebly, or have a bath - anything to get you away from the jaffa cakes.

What exam results are you waiting for?

JackieNo · 15/01/2007 13:26

Easily done, Schneebly. Displacement activity, definitely, as Littlefish suggests. Or have a big cup of coffee, to take the taste of the chocolate away (as recommended by Suejonez I think).

schneebly · 15/01/2007 14:29

Thanks - it was okay as DH came home early so not been tempted to eat the other 12! Still waiting on results - It is for my Provision for Children exam (part of BA Child and Youth Studies)

JackieNo · 15/01/2007 14:30

Fingers crossed for you (but you did so well in the other thingy that it sounds as though you'll be fine...).

schneebly · 15/01/2007 14:56

Thanks jackie - this is my worst subject though!

justamum · 15/01/2007 17:40

yum jaffa cakes. Schneebly it is physically impossible to only have one jaffa cake when the packet is opened, just like pringles "once you pop you can't stop" so it was always completly beyond your control!

mytwopenceworth · 15/01/2007 21:07

hi. am having a bad night. i am so desperate to eat. i have tried talking to dh but he just doesn't understand. he says eat some jelly (i am allowed sugar free jelly) but i HATE jelly. its like swallowing week old snot (pardon me, but i need to express the depth of my loathing so you understand!) he just says well, if you are hungry you'll eat it.

he believes that a hungry person would eat any food regardless of whether or not they liked the taste. i cant, i just cant eat something that makes me gag - i would have to be starving (by that i mean literally)

i have to stay on this (history in case someone missed all my moaning - i am to have an operation to cut away most of my stomach but the consultant wants me to lose 5 stone by the time he sees me in april or he might not operate. i am on a special diet which consists of skimmed milk, fat free yoghurt, s/f jelly - ew - stock cube. basically!). i havent eaten since new years eve and i am so so so so so so so hungry. april looks so far away and i feel so alone because dh just doesnt understand that this is hard. he doesnt get the extent of my food addiction and he's not someone who cares much about feelings, to him it's logic all the way.

feel like crying.

Littlefish · 15/01/2007 22:13

MTPW - I'm so sorry you're finding it so awful at the moment. I really don't know what to say, but just didn't want your post to go unanswered. I know exactly what you mean about eating foods you don't like. I take it that your dh doesn't have a problem with food. My dh says "you could just eat less". Oh, stupid me, why didn't I think of that before. It's just so simple !!!!!!

Just take it one day at a time. Every day takes you closer to your appointment with the consultant.

JackieNo · 15/01/2007 22:19

mytwopenceworth - you poor thing - it does sound like torture. Could you just go to bed, or have a bath or something to take you away from food? Hope you can get over this bump.

CheesyFeet · 16/01/2007 10:54

How are you this morning MTPW?

You are doing so amazingly well. Keep talking on here through the rough patches and we will be here to support you.

People who don't have issues with food will never understand despite their best intentions. Loads of us here do understand and sympathise with you. It's an addiction that you are fighting and you need to be supported as if you were an alcoholic or heroin addict. The big difference is that you have to eat so you can't just cut out the offending substance, as it were, and go cold turkey. This makes it all the harder imo.

Hang in there, just keep thinking forwards and don't let the bad days distract you from your ultimate goal.

mytwopenceworth · 16/01/2007 11:09

thanks. i nearly gave in last night. i was seriously trying to tell myself i could do a calorie controlled diet (no way could i control myself) but i had a big mug of stock cube and went to bed with a book and sulked.

took me ages to get to sleep, but this morning i feel stronger and i'm glad i didnt give up. i know that if i give in and eat i will not be able to stop myself (could an alcoholic have just one whiskey?) and i really need this op so i can see my kids grow up.
