I'm still here!

It was my birthday yesterday and I celebrated with a soda and lime juice and vegetable curry Smile

I am still really missing coffee with milk and sugar but everything else is ok.

I made a sweet and sour sauce using orange juice and coconut aminos and it's really tasty. We're having that with a stir fry later and DDs will have noodles too.

I had breakfast in town this morning and found a cafe that served frittata. I think it really helps if there a few places you can eat out. The sheer amount of cooking required can be a real drag.

Readysteadyknit · 16/01/2016 12:44

I'm here too!

Happy birthday for yesterday Snaz!

Like everyone else I am fed up with all the cooking and having to be really organised. I went out for the day last week and had to take a huge bag as I knew nothing compliant would be available so had to take my own lunch and dinner.

I made a lovely fish pie yesterday with the fish and veg cooked in coconut milk and the pie topped with sweet potato.

Still don't think I've lost any weight worth mentioning but do feel better.

SuperwormTheThird · 16/01/2016 13:34

Happy birthday Snaz! Well done for sticking on your birthday too :)
Ready, the fish pie sounds good. Will give that a try.
My Jersey chicken mentioned above was actually Jerk chicken!!

Snaz, was the coconut amnios easy to get hold of?

Snazapoo · 16/01/2016 15:26

I get the aminos from Amazon Superworm but they are eye wateringly expensive. Something like £8 for a small bottle.
They are delicious though and a good substitute for soy sauce.

That fish pie sounds good Ready, do you have a recipe?

Readysteadyknit · 16/01/2016 16:09

I just did an adapted version of the recipe here

Paleogirl · 17/01/2016 01:57

Can I join please? I have been doing paleo for the last year and it really works for weight loss but need to be a bit stricter as I need to get weight moving downward again.

Bestbees · 17/01/2016 08:17

Of course paleo girl!

Phew you are still here ladies! Happy birthday snaz, and well done to sticking to it. The fish pie sounds great, a shame husband hates it!

I weighed myself today and have put a pound back on! A bit gutted but looked at the whole 30 timeline and hopefully in the weight loss stage soon. I think I am definately snacking too much. All compliant, but not part of the vibe of the plan. Regardless of what they are made up of a calorie is a calorie. Not finding it too hard to stick to the food though. Went to a vege friends house for dinner, 6 adults, a million toddlers, but kindly she made something suitable for me too, omelettes, potatoes and salad. Yesterday I had a rally swollen tongue and ulcers, which I usually associat with a sugar binge, which was a bit weird.

The cooking is getting a bit tedious, but trying to keep it simple, doing a lot of slow cooked meat and veg, adding extras for the kids.

Is paleo recommended for little ones anyone know? Feel like things like brown rice etc are good for them, and of course the milk thing. Mine were breastfed for ages, almost two years. They love cows milk, but also like soya and coconut. Not sure whether to slowly push them my way!!

Readysteadyknit · 17/01/2016 10:08

I had a really bad day yesterday constantly craving something sweet and ended up snacking on fruit all day. Hopefully today will be better.

Proper link!

Snazapoo · 18/01/2016 09:45

Hello Paleogirl, we vaguely stick to a paleo diet too but I needed the rigidity of the Whole30 to try and lose some weight.

We rarely have bread at home, don't keep sweets or crisps etc and DDs eat gluten free pasta. I still give them dairy as they are quite young but I do try and replace with coconut milk where possible. There are lots of people raising their children in the paleo way but I'm not too strict. I also try not to limit things outside of the home. So they go to parties or playdates and eat what everyone else does.

They are both healthy and happy children who rarely have colds and happily eat salad Grin

Yesterday was another day out so I made a frittata for breakfast and took a slice with me for lunch. My friend cooked pasta for everyone and I had my frittata with some roast vegetable sauce. Then we all went for a walk which ended at a cafe. Everyone had cake and hot chocolate and I had fruit tea. Not quite the same but it was fine.

DH cooked dinner whigh was a lovely pork cassoulet type thing but without beans. We had this with green beans and cabbage. There is some of this leftover so that's today's lunch sorted.

I hope everyone had a good weekend and it's getting a bit easier.

Snazapoo · 19/01/2016 14:55

I just wanted to share a recipe success with you.

I made chicken 'nuggets' for lunch. I grated 1 carrot and 1 courgette and minced a chicken breasts (just shoved it all in the blender until it was a rough paste), then added seasoning of oregano, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Heated up some oil and dropped in spoonfuls of the mixture and cooked until brown on each side.

My daughters loved them and I enjoyed them too. Makes enough for 4 which is pretty good for 1 chicken breast.

Bestbees · 19/01/2016 15:02

Sounds lovely snazapoo. I guess it would work with turkey mince too.

I'm ill! Terrible sore throat. Sticking to it, but did I
Eat some vegetable crisps which are compliant but a bit out of the ethos and definately a trigger food for me. On day 15 and thinking that I am not bothered about the things I have given up, so not sure what I will or won't reintroduce. What are others thinking?
Also, think I am eating too much fat with nuts n coconut milk so will try to reduce that a bit.

How is everyone?

SuperwormTheThird · 19/01/2016 17:58

Hi everyone, and welcome Paleogirl. Still going here. I had an awful day yesterday and really felt like giving up last night for the first time.
We had compliant sausages, roast new potatoes and fried onions for tea. It was all compliant (in theory if not quite in the whole30 ethos) but felt very naughty and unhealthy so I think it got me through the slump. Like your crisps (but maybe worse) Bestbees!
Today has been better and I'm back to green things!!

Snaz, the chicken nuggets sound good - better than the ones I made from the whole30 book. Doing this has really highlighted to me how I've got into a rut with the kids food. They are both pretty fussy so their diet had become a bit limited and I really think they eat too much sugar too. I might get a copy of the dinosaur book suggested by Imfine above (thanks Imfine).

Paleogirl · 19/01/2016 18:20

Thanks everyone. Im muddling along.

Imfinehowareyou · 20/01/2016 13:29

I'm halfway through day 3. I did a 'Whole 25' before Christmas but didn't mange the 30 days or reintroduction part as I didn't plan properly for Christmas appearing!

I know what was hard for me last time so I can avoid that this time. I cannot allow fruit for snacks as I then eat it all the time. Ditto for nut butters. I will only have them if they are part of a recipe. I was also crap at planning too so was always struggling to make a meal from limited ingredients when I was hungry.

My biggest wrench was no milk in my coffee which has not been an issue at all this time. I have yet to experience the 'hangover' which is worrying me as I want to get it out of the way!

I have the official 30 day guide this time round and the No Fuss Salmon Cakes were delicious. Another favourite of mine is Madras Chicken salad from Nom Nom Paleo.

Superworm what sausages do you use?

Imfinehowareyou · 20/01/2016 13:30

Working link!

BerylStreep · 20/01/2016 14:13

Hi all.

Glad to see a Whole30 thread going - I started the Whole30 in mid-September and felt great. I lost 8 kgs in the first month, but more importantly my asthma disappeared and arthritis symptoms massively reduced. I have pretty much stuck with it since, with the exception of the occasional glass of wine, and a few exceptions over Christmas (although even then it was occasional - I can proudly say that for the first time ever we didn't have a tin of chocolates in the house over the Xmas period).

I have now lost 16 kg in total (2 1/2 stone).

I was at a Whole30 seminar in London at the weekend where Melissa Hartwig was speaking. She is an amazingly articulate speaker, and really knows her stuff. Have any of you read It Starts With Food? It's the science-y explanation behind the Whole30. A very good read.

Paleogirl · 20/01/2016 19:48

Hi Beryl I wrote on your other thread under a different name. I have been doing paleo for most of the last year and have lost two stone. I surprised myself really. This way really really really works and its not too difficult. I still eat dark chocolate and have the odd roast potato but mainly just eat totally natural and clean.

I have joined in with this thread as I want to reboot myself and today went and restocked my fridge. Loads of veg, salad and fruit. Fish, chicken, beef and gammon. Fresh herbs and dried, spices, nuts and seeds and coconut flakes. I don't have dairy at all.

BerylStreep · 20/01/2016 20:26

It's a good long-term way of life isn't it Paleogirl? Glad to hear you are still at it.

I was given Simply Nigella for Christmas and there are quite a few recipes in there which are, or can be adapted to Whole30. I had the bitter orange and fennel chicken traybake tonight which was amazing.

Bestbees · 23/01/2016 07:09

Hello!

How is everyone doing? I am finding sticking to the plan easy in terms of sticking o compliant food. However I am really suffering with a sore throat and lots of ulcers on my tongue. Can help but feel there is a connection and when I eat acidic veg or fruit it gets worse. Horrid and meaning I am skipping the good things as it is causing pain. On the plus side I am not bothered about eating really. No cravings, just eating for fuel as I get hungry. I feel like I could keep this up pretty permanently as long asy mouth returns to normal.

Anyone else having any strange effects?

Paleogirl · 23/01/2016 15:42

Could be your body detoxing or could be too many acidic fruits and veg. Maybe try cutting out the acidic ones for now.

WorkInProgess · 26/01/2016 18:54

I have done paleo in the past and did well.

Now just low carb as i like dairy too much.

Lurpak do clarified butter in their cook range. Is usually by normal butter, in a tub. I use it when making curry, makes the sauce soooo much tastier.

Readysteadyknit · 31/01/2016 15:33

How is everyone doing? The end is in sight but I think I may keep going with some aspects - avoiding sugar and dairy is a plus for me. My weight loss has been disappointing - only 4lbs so far - but I do feel healthier.

Bestbees · 31/01/2016 20:53

Hi!

I am the same as you ready, only four pounds down. However trying to focus on all the positives and I do think I could keep this up 90% of the time. I am interested in reintroducing some pulses, brown rice and natural yoghurt as I feel they do have some benefits. Any plans for a day 31 meal blow out? I keep thinking about it but then not wanting anything!

How is everyone else?
