I have 10 stone to lose overall. There, I said it. No going back now. I miss riding my horse, I miss being happy and I have a toddler that doesn't want a sweaty elephant for a mum.
Anyone want to join me for some moral support?

Well I stir fried 100g of broccoli with a few prawns for lunch in garlic and soy with frylight...left the room to sort out ds2 when he woke and came back to the dog finishing off the second half. Initially was annoyed as she never does this but now have decided it's a blessing in disguise and she is trying to help me out Grin.

PeterLovesHisKids · 13/01/2016 14:23

Thanks Fatty (feels mean calling you that Grin).

limetimemummy · 13/01/2016 17:56

I've been wondering about getting a spiralizer, do any of you use one and if so which one? Or was it a purchase that was great at the time but is now ignored tidied away at the back of the cupboard? I don't want to spend money on one that isn't great. I like courgette and given that my downfall is carbs was looking at the options for pasta swaps.

dynevoran · 13/01/2016 18:12

I have this one and use all the time www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B002E19IB0/ref=mp_s_a_1_7?qid=1452708517&sr=8-7&pi=AC_SX110_SY165&keywords=spiraliser&dpPl=1&dpID=416c2NiNQeL&ref=plSrch.

But I do use when I wasn't on a diet I just like it! It's nice for cucumber in salads too. In terms of pasta and rice have you tried these: www.totalwellbeingsolutions.co.uk/bare-naked-noodles/bare-naked-noodles-380g-original.html?gclid=CO2Fvq2xp8oCFRcYGwodoVgFjw

Sainsbury have them on sale at the moment at (I think) £1 a pack. I love them as much as any other noodles. The nutritional information is amazing!

stopfaffing · 13/01/2016 18:14

I was looking into those as well lime. The Japanese one seems good but expensive.

stopfaffing · 13/01/2016 18:18

On BBC2 tonight at 8pm the second "Trust me I'm a Doctor" is on.

In part one, last week, Dr Saleyha Ahsan oversees a world-first experiment to see how we can burn more fat without doing more exercise. I haven't seen it yet, will watch later on catch up.

Part two, tonight, Dr Chris Van Tulleken runs a groundbreaking experiment with the University of Surrey to explore whether changing mealtimes can promote weight loss, while Gabriel Weston looks at whether diet products can cause people to put weight on.

limetimemummy · 13/01/2016 18:56

Thanks dynevoran for the recommendations; those noodles are almost fresh air!

dynevoran · 13/01/2016 19:22

I know lime But honestly there is a negligible difference between those and normal noodles! I don't know how they do it!

ToeTouching · 13/01/2016 23:03

limetime I'm doing the NHS choices C25k podcast with voice of the lovely Laura - she spurs me on and I talk back to her Blush

stopfaffing · 14/01/2016 06:50

Toe I did my fourth Cto5K "run" yesterday and am repeating week one again as I don't feel ready to move on yet. I got mine through NHS Choices too. Enjoying it so far. My cats come with me and do it Grin. At some point I will take a photo of them and post it.

imustbepatient · 14/01/2016 09:45

Limetime I bought a spiraliser and to be honest I haven't got on with it. Probably because I misunderstood what it did and thought it did the long spaghetti / fettuccine looking strands rather than the wider really twisty spirals. So I was using it wrongly I think! I may get it back out again at some point but for the time being I've order a julienne peeler from Amazon for about £6 I think it was. It does the long strands on anything like courgette carrots sweet potatoes etc. it's meant to arrive today so I'll let you know how I get on!

LentilStew · 14/01/2016 11:58

Is the C25k useful to keep motivated? Does it come in different levels as I'm not sure where it starts or whether it would be useful for me. I usually run for 20-30mins 2 or 3 times a week. But I'd love something to listen to that made it all more enjoyable.

stopfaffing · 14/01/2016 19:26

Lentil, I'll take you through the first level (there are 9). You start with a five minute walk; only walking fast enough that you could chat to someone without being breathless (so don't overdo it).

Then you start a slow jog for 60 seconds, again slow enough so you don't get too tired or discouraged.

Then 90 seconds of walking (to recover) then a further seven 1 minute jog/90 second walk sessions before a final 5 minute walk/cool down. Takes half an hour.

They tell you to do three level 1's before moving on to the second level but I am repeating level 1 again. I don't feel ready to move on yet. If, after another three level 1's I feel able, I will move on to level 2. If not, I will repeat level 1 (three times) again.

It is not a race, it is a start of a new and healthy routine in my life. One I intend to keep doing long term. I won't continue doing it if it is too difficult and I get discouraged so I am going at my own pace.

It is great, actually. I am looking forward to tomorrow morning (5th session) and also looking forward to the lighter mornings when I can go through the woods next to my house.

Incidentally Lentil, I have started joining in our school's "walk/Run a Mile" daily exercise (caused a scene yesterday when I started running with the kids, no other staff have done this).

It is even more remarkable as I am carrying 7 extra stone around and wearing court shoes and a dress Grin. Well pleased with myself though and I could never have dared to try had I not done the early morning sessions at home.

stopfaffing · 14/01/2016 19:27

Additonally, after Cto5K there is Beyond 5K on the NHS Choices website, available to download. Might suit someone who is already a runner.

LentilStew · 14/01/2016 19:43

Thanks, Stopfaffing, that's really helpful. I'm currently doing about 30mins at a slow to medium pace. I'm also doing 10mins running on the treadmill set with an incline at the gym 4times a week so I think I'll look at the c25k plus thing. I'm ok with running I think, I just find it tedious.

Well done got sticking with it and for having the confidence to run at school. Before having DCs when I was a size 10, I still would never have the confidence yo take part in the teachers run on sports day.

FattyNinjaOwl · 14/01/2016 21:15

I'm off shopping tomorrow. I reckon if I walk with DS2 in the sling I will burn loads of calories right? So this weight should drop off me yes? (He was 10lb 10 at birth. I think he may now be heavier than his dainty 2 year old sister Confused there was only 4lb difference 2 months ago)

Tomorrow's tea will be home made chicken burgers with salsa. Less than 300 calories.

Clearskies99 · 14/01/2016 21:52

Great to hear of all the people building up running - well done. I'm concentrating on walking more at the moment, as I don't want to risk injuries at this weight and then be out of action - happened alot last year and was so depressing. So walking it is and some brisk walking....

Had a positive moment in the kitchen just now; knackered after a very busy day, clearing up with food all around me and it would have been so easy to just graze and pick at things. Knew it wasn't hunger, just tiredness, thought of this thread, drank more water and and brushed my teeth instead and the urge passed. It's breaking these old habits, bit by bit.... and it really helps to think of all of you out there on similar paths. So thank you !

onward and downward.....

Brokenbiscuit · 14/01/2016 21:54

Well done Clearskies - good for you for resisting the temptation!

stopfaffing · 14/01/2016 22:14

Was watching last week's episode of Trust me I'm a Doctor (Series 4: episode 1) earlier, about the best ways to burn fat effectively. Really interesting and worth a look .

This is the link to the daily exercises you can do at home, featured in the programme.

LentilStew · 14/01/2016 22:41

Well done, Clearskies. You're right, it's all about lots of small changes for life, not starving yourself or anything else faddy. I bought the Slimming World magazine earlier and in one of the articles a woman who had lost lots of weight said people kept asking her was there a special occasion she had lost the weight for and she said...yes, the special occasion is the rest of my life. I thought that was a fantastic attitude.

Fatty, your dinner tomorrow sounds yummy!

SaoirseLikeInertia · 15/01/2016 13:46

Happy Friday everyone!

Has anyone got any nice plans? I'm home alone with the pooch so apart from a slooooow dander, sniffing every twig /stone / bit of shit we encounter (dog, not me) I will be cleaning my house

dynevoran · 15/01/2016 13:54

Great running on this thread well done. I did c25k last year and a sprint triathlon in June and a few fun 5k obstacle races. In the tri I realised just how strong a swimmer I am having swum lots as a child and teen and rarely as an adult. So got back into it and in Sep I did a 2km swim in dorney lake.

So this year is all about the swimming for me rather than running. Have just started training for 5km swim in windemere in June....eek!

Another 2lb loss here from earlier in the week, less appetite, drinking more water and going to bed earlier. Feel amazing. Feel like I have lost more than 10lb by not being bloated by carbs or excess portions. No longer look pregnant...just fat!

2016 is OUR YEAR, people!!

FattyNinjaOwl · 15/01/2016 14:38

Change of plan. It's going to be Turkey burgers instead. DS1 is going to help me make them.
Then I'm watching old episodes of Dr who....again....
And I've promised DS1 he can sleep downstairs on the sofa bed.

EdithSimcox · 15/01/2016 14:46

I ate chocolate cake and custard last night :(

Clearskies99 · 15/01/2016 16:16

Don't beat yourself up about it EdithSimcox. it doesn't have to mean going back to square one. We have to be kind to ourselves while trying to change maybe longstanding habits, it's not necessarily going to be a totally smooth path for any of us.

Some wise person said something about if you are going to eat cake or chocolate or whatever really enjoy it and savour it - so hope it was delicious!

I'm trying to really notice the positive effects of eating for true hunger and drinking loads of water AND also notice how I feel more tired, sluggish or generally negative if I overeat or don't drink enough.
