Hey I'm a Bodypump instructor!! Bodypump is one of the fastest and most effective ways to get into shape. It combines the many benefits of strength training with aeorbic work to burn fat - fast. In the class you'll perform simple exercises with resistance (I'd start light). You're muscles get stronger and as they do, your body gets better at burning fat.

The good thing about Bodypump is that you know what you're getting as all instructors are internationally certified and the product is the same where ever you are (unless someone is just calling the class Bodypump)!!

I'd recommend doing Bodypump at least 2 times a week with a 48 hour gap in between so the muscles can recover.

Lorns · 12/01/2007 22:56

Oh on the rest of your exercise regime. A balance of cardivascular exercise (swimming/running etc.) weight/conditioning exercises AND stretch/mind body is beneficial. Just like eating it's the Balance!!

loopity · 12/01/2007 23:03

Thanks Lorns, going to try my first bodypump class next week. Looks like I do too much cardio-vascular work and need to be a bit braver about tackling the weights machines! Might book in an appt with one of the personal trainers at the gym and get some advice. Think I've been stuck in a bit of a rut doing the same old workout so it'll be good to vary it a bit more.

BTW it's definitely an accredited bodypump class and instructor

One more question, sorry! Any thoughts about spin classes? My friend wants me to go to one with her, but I don't tend to use the bike much at the gym so not sure what I'd make of it. Is it mostly cardiovascular too?

Your body needs a kickstart as it gets used to doing the same thing fairly quickly. Most gyms should recommend changing your gym programme every 6-8 weeks.

As a rule of thumb, if you feel that say your running your workout isn't challenging you, then up the speed/incline/duration a little, or play around with the preset programmes on the treadmill.

I'd suggest holding the PT re weights until you decided if you like Bodypump. Doing 2-3 Bodypumps a week will more than fill your weekly quota of weights workout!!

Let me know how you get on next week!!

loopity · 12/01/2007 23:13

Thanks again Lorns, will do!

Concerning spinning. This is a great CV workout. As you are just in one space, be prepared to sweat alot - so take some water!!

The instructor should set you up on the bike so it's adapted to your height and tell you how to change gears.

You might want to keep the gears light to start with until you get used to it!! Make sure you stretch your hip flexors well at the end if the instructor doesn't as cycling can make these very tight. The hip flexors are found in the crease at the top of your thighs. If you don't know how to stretch them, the ask a member of the gym team to show you!!

By the way do they do RMP at the gym or do they just call it spinning. Both are good. RMP is like Bodypump as in you know what you're getting.

Great info, thanks Lorns!

Lornaloo - good luck starting the new job tomorrow

OP posts:
skibump · 13/01/2007 11:53

Interesting thread - thx both. Think I will also have a look at the bodypump class. Sounds like it might be v efficient in terms of the benefit gained for time put in, and that's important right now!

How'd it go Lorna? (xpect you're there right now )

skibump · 13/01/2007 11:55

Oh, also tried plank. hmmm. Can just about mange a count of 8, really feels like it's doing something!

lornaloo · 13/01/2007 18:26

Hi everyone.

My first day went really well. Everyones really nice. It was nice to get out of the house for the day lol. Missed George so much though.

Lorns is your name Lorna? My names Lorna, my friends call me Lorns. When I saw your name I though it was me for a brief moment. Got abit confused! It's been a long day...

Gym looks fantastic at work. Just don't know when I will use it. Didn't feel like it today after work. I have to friends who work there (thats how I heard about the job). I think we might go one or two evenings a week together. Should be fun .

Marls do you think my scales could be wrong? It says I'm 19% but I'm in no way skin and bone.

lornaloo · 13/01/2007 18:27

Skibump if the plank is too hard on your back do it with your knees on the floor but still kind of balancing your weight. Its much easier and perhaps won't be too much strain on your back.

Lorns · 13/01/2007 19:40

Hey yep my name is Lorna too, and yes my friends call me Lorns!! Here's me thinking I I was fairly original. You too???

Tell me if I'm being nosy, but what's your new job?

Marls001 · 13/01/2007 20:09

Lorna (sorry for confusion Loopity ) there's a table for healthy ranges of body fat here ... just about mirrors my printout ... but here is another one that's altogether different ...

loopity · 13/01/2007 20:21

Hi everyone

Glad you had a good first day lornaloo

Thanks for the bodyfat charts Marls, esp the first one - looks like I'm still in the acceptable range (29-30% body fat - I'm same age as you btw!) albeit closer to the upper end. That was a few months ago, don't know if I've changed much since then or not.

I have a wedding to go to next Saturday, would love to be a few lbs lighter even just for the day - anyone got any ideas if this is achievable in a week or am I just being over-optimistic?

OP posts:
Marls001 · 13/01/2007 20:32

Loopity ... you could ... but you'd mess with your system if you stringently dieted all week & chances are those pounds would come right back If it were me I'd try to avoid salt entirely, to help with water bloat ... beyond that might spring for a corset of some kind; would definitely wear black ... and pointy-toed heels as high as I could stand them ... . Also read somewhere that hair swept up is more slimming than left down, as draws more attention to the face .... along those lines, some detail at the collar, perhaps a large necklace ... ...

loopity · 13/01/2007 20:48

Hi Marls, my dress is black and silver-grey so def sticking to the darker colours! It fits ok but would just like it to look a bit slinkier if at all possible
Will definitely stick to no salt and up my water intake even if it means a lot of weeing for the first few days lol. Would love to go wheat-free for a week but I love bread so much it would be very difficult...

OP posts:
lornaloo · 13/01/2007 22:14

Lorns- Its so wierd calling someone that lol. I only started working there today. I hadn't worked since I was 7 months pregnant with ds. I'm just working in the café bar and occasionally the reception.
What gym do you work for?

Marls that charts abit . I'm deffo not under weight or in any way unhealthy looking. I still have plently of fat to grab. I suspect my scales are wrong.

Lorns · 14/01/2007 16:05

Lornaloo - I am a self-employed teacher and work at a number of gyms, inlcluding Bannatynes, fitness first and local authority centres. I also run my own Pilates classes from home!

Over the last 16 yers I've worked for quite a few of the "big guns"! Which gym are you working for (I guess that's where your working)?

loopity · 14/01/2007 20:02

Hi
Hope you have all had a nice weekend.
Have been quite good today, no gym but walked to the shops with dd and took the lo's to the park as well today.

Going to try salt and wheatfree from tomorrow for 5 days to see if I can drop a lb or two for the wedding.

Has anyone tried one of those beautician bodywrap things where you can temporarily lose a few inches? Are they worth the money for a special occasion or do the inches magically re-appear as soon as you have a glass of water...?

MrsFish · 15/01/2007 18:21

I've been crap since friday, just can't seem to get my arse into gear

lornaloo · 15/01/2007 18:27

Hi Mrs Fish. I haven't managed a work out since
last thurs. I feel too tired.
Haven't been great on the food front either.

Lorns I work in Esporta.

Hows everyone else?

skibump · 15/01/2007 19:40

Hi everyone, hope you all had a good w/e

I've been rubbish re food as well. Losing just 1lb seems to permit me to eat all sorts of junk Better on the exercise front, went for a long walk on Saturday and played badminton on Sunday. Food been better today, no snacks and loads of water, will try to keep that up for the rest of the week

Also I've been doing that plank torture thingy a couple of times a day, and my stomach muscles are definitely waking up

MrsFish, what are you planning for the rest of the week? I find it's easier if there's omething healthy and quick to hand when I get hungry

Lornaloo, glad you're enjoying the new job, now you've just got to get in the gym as well (it's difficult though - you must miss your babe while you're away)

MrsFish · 15/01/2007 19:53

I'm going to make a big fruit salad and I have a loads of celery in and will chop up some carrot sticks and make some more vegetable soup, hopefully that will help with the snacking.

The main thing I need to do is anything I cook/make for ds if he doesn't eat it, I need to stop finishing it for him and chuck it in the bin. That is my main problem at the moment.

Got my session with the personal trainer tomorrow so shall see how that goes. If it goes well I am going to book him, once a week for three months, so then I will have someone to answer to and it will make me work harder when in the gym. Hopefully that will kick me into shape

skibump · 15/01/2007 20:50

Yeah, I recognise that! For a time I made ds porridge with formula then ended up eating half of it myself. Why didn't I realise how many calories there are in formula??? Also the food you make for the kids is normally really nice...just go for the carrot sticks instead, you know it makes sense

Good luck for tomorrow with the PT
