I Quit Sugar - anyone up for this?

Cappster · 10/04/2015 13:51

I tried quitting sugar during January and it was really good - I lost a few pounds, ate really well, felt very good (after initial detox Blush)

I need to do it again but it would be really good to have a bit of support

Any takers?

My relative is looking too skinny but she's enjoying her new man and revelling in her new size but it has aged her and what you can get away with in your 20 s and 30s is harder mid fifties. I think when you're in the heady in love stage though you usually gain some of it back as you eat, drink and socialise more together. Shes so lovely and looks stunning and very happy.

She's done it by eating very little. She wasn't going to have anything else to eat after lunch one day and when I Totted up her days calories, she'd only had 600. If that.

We went and got a fish and chip supper. Just shared the chips three ways.

I'm back on Mfp.

I think the reason I haven't felt like I've lost anything or much with my 3 months no sugar is bigger portions than we should have and before when I was hungry I'd have a couple of squares of nice chocolate. Now I reach for crisps, nuts , gluten free crisp read with cheese or hummus.

Am cutting out g and ts too. I never drank for most of my adult life so no more.

I'm in the last chance saloon. 8 weeks to wedding with a 2.5 week holiday in the middle of it.

I want that 9lbs off.

AbsentMindedNumpty · 23/07/2015 07:45

Just off on holiday for a couple of weeks, best of luck everyone on kicking sugar into touch Grin.

bbcessex · 23/07/2015 14:33

Hi all, I've been watching your thread with interest for the past two weeks and decided to join - hello!

.. I'm on week 5 of 'no obvious sugar' now.. I'm finding it a really good way of eating.

I've lost 11 lbs, and feel SO much better. More energy, better skin, sleeping better.

I am doing a lot more exercise, which I have the energy for, and I have also really reduced the carbs. I've cleared the cupboards of any form of sugar / crisp type-crap, and therefore by default, the whole family is being far more healthy.

We are still eating a lot of fruit by way of the Nutribullet, but I'm not so concerned about sugar in fruit (perhaps I should be, but one step at a time).

Like you Dowser, I am really happy eating this way... hope it lasts!

Dowser · 23/07/2015 19:05

Hello cessex. 11 lbs...sobs! I'd be delighted. Well done you.

I've a confession. I had half a yorkie button yesterday ( gross ) and a toffee choc today which I thoroughly enjoyed.

So am well off the wagon. I don't know what tippedme over the edge. I just knew I had to have it. I was going round the kitchen looking for something. I'd had crisps and then went to the spare room and saw OH's box of chocs and that was it.

I'm doing this formy health, sugar really messes my insides up so it had better not happen tomorrow.

I daresay it was just boredom withmy very restrictive diet.

I'm ok now.

msrisotto · 24/07/2015 07:48

No worries Dowser, you've been doing so well and your diet is pretty restrictive to maintain long term. Onwards and upwards!

I found last weekend (my first no sugar weekend) really difficult but got through with the help of frozen banana 'ice cream'. Weekdays are super easy now though, I don't even think about it. We'll see how this weekend goes...maybe if I stick it out long enough, it'll be as easy as weekdays? I dunno, I think after a month or so, i'll probably allow myself dessert at restaurants, birthdays, special occasions etc.

Dowser · 24/07/2015 09:08

I'm thinking of taking my wedding dress in to be altered today. The seamstress is going away soon but can't remember when.

There's still another 8 weeks to go but I like to be organised.

I'm over the sugar now. Must have just been one of those things you can't ignore. We went on to have fruity turkey curry for dinner which is a firm staple of ours. Need to put yesterday's calories into Mfp. This ain't going to go well.

bbcessex · 24/07/2015 09:22

What's your dress like, Dowser? Your posts inspired me to finally realise that I need to look after my body if I don't want it to fail me later on.. I'm late 40's and needed a literal kick up the butt.

bbcessex · 24/07/2015 09:23

PS... I think stopping at a Yorkie button and a toffee choc show how far you've come... that would have set me off on a huge binge a few weeks ago.

Dowser · 24/07/2015 11:08

Thank you Essex. You've loads of time. I should have started in my early 40s ( well I did sort of otherwise I think my health would have been much worse).

Temptations are all around so it's so much harder than growing up in the 50s.
We didn't have supermarkets then so there werent aisles full of every choc treat you could think of. It was more stodgy then. Cakes, biscuits, puddings and custard but maybe they filled you up more so you weren't looking for more ' fuel' in an hour or so.

I've got my grandson staying and I always buy 'treats' for when any of them visit. We added up his calories. He had 3000 in one day. Half were sugary treats. I've spoken to him about healthy eating and now he's built like a whippet and is never still but it's something I will be keeping an eye on.

My dress is lovely. Cheap as chips. I bought it abroad and would have paid treble here. It's white chiffon, long with broad straps, so bra will be worn lol and knife pleats on bodice. Some sprinkling of diamanté on the waist and then plain. Just how I want it. I want those breast pads out, I'm not small of nork so these are an unnecessary extravagance. As long as it can be done without the top of the dress collapsing.

Hope the seamstress can manage that.

Ah well onwards and upwards.

Everyone have a good day. Make some good choices. I've found my mojo and done 2 mins of waist twists!

msrisotto · 26/07/2015 18:40

This weekend (my second no sugar weekend) has been far less painful than the last! I think it is largely about breaking associations for me. Hopefully each weekend will be easier until I don't really think about it. Smile

Dowser · 01/08/2015 08:07

I've been really unwell this week. In a lot of pain. I have had some chocolate.

I haven't particularly enjoyed it. I didn't overdo it either.

It felt more like my body was needing it. The rest of my diet was fine.

Maybe it was a stress reaction. Now the fun starts as I'm away for two weeks.
Definitely won't be buying chocolate though.

msrisotto · 01/08/2015 11:13

Sorry to hear you're poorly :( Look after yourself, or better, get someone else to look after you!

msrisotto · 14/08/2015 09:38

Ok, so it looks like I might have killed the thread!

Anyway, if anyone is interested in joining.....it has been 1 month since I have been properly no added sugar and it has gone so well! I haven't always found it easy, for sure, however I have been slowly and steadily losing weight, without trying it feels like! I've been eating normally apart from no extra sugar, never been hungry or felt hard done by. I've lost about 1lb a week which i'm super happy about :)

Dowser · 18/08/2015 12:17

Well done mrs risotto.

Well I'm back from my hols and I'm going nowhere near the scales. Eating has been all over the place. Literally. I'm more concerned about the fatty Asian food I've eaten rather than the sugar I've consumed which in the scheme of things isn't that much.

Soooooooooooooooooo!

Four weeks today, I step onto that plane for my wedding. So please ladies, get behind me and give me all the support you can. I want to look fabulous and I know I have the willpower. I'm getting on the scales the day before our trip.

It's a relief to have got back to my omelette breakfast, green soup lunch and protein veg and small carb dinner.

Starting right this minute.

Dragonball · 24/08/2015 08:48

Hi there, this thread is interesting to me- I have ulcerative colitis (like crohns- an inflammatory, auto Immume disease of the digestive system) and diet is key for my symptoms.. I am cutting out meat at the moment and am thinking of cutting out most sugars. The problem is that I can't tolerate many raw foods such as nuts, carrots etc- they irritate my gut too much (less so when not flaring but always scared to try) so wondered if I could get some advice from anyone. I bought a Nutri bullet recently to see if I could make more digestible plant based food for me but then had a flare up and only now thinking of trying it again.
Thanks

Dragonball · 24/08/2015 09:10

Oh and I'm also extremely low on time and money- I'm studying for an MA part time and am also self-employed working as a writer- with 2 kids 6&2..

Hellokitty105 · 24/08/2015 13:24

I think this thread needs a kickstart or a reeboot!

I've seen a few threads about quitting sugar and I'm going to take the plunge! I'm a 5:2er but post all inclusive holiday I fell of the Wagon and I'm dragging myself back on!
I'm going to use this thread to check in how I'm doing and when I feel myself faultering or reaching for a sugary treat I'm going to use posting here as a distraction. I know my problem is I'm an a or nothing kinda gal so when I get a taste I loose all control so I know cold turkey is my best option!

msrisotto · 25/08/2015 17:42

Dragonball - are you basically doing an elimination diet?

Hello Hellokitty! Best of luck with your first week no sugar-ing! There are some good links/videos on here to watch if you need to boost your resolve... I reckon the first couple of weeks are the hardest.

I am finding myself, checking myself out in the mirror! Feeling slim! Grin

Hellokitty105 · 26/08/2015 09:04

Having a fast day today and yesterday's non fast day went well so by the end of today I'll have had 3 successful days! Also being pay day I've decided if I can keep going this successfully till next week I'll treat myself and get my nails done (I usually do them myself but having someone else do them is a treat for me!). Then if I can go till the end of September I'll buy myself some perfume I have my eye on. I'm trying to use other things as rewards instead of food.

msrisotto · 26/08/2015 12:14

Good plan

Dowser · 26/08/2015 18:53

I'm off the wagon now although I did do 3 months.

I'm having the odd choc and a couple of teaspoons of ice cream today.

Glad I didn't have a full one. Should be nose to grindstone last three weeks before wedding!

Where did it all go wrong.

I think it was because I bought a dress that fitted rather than having one to slim into!

msrisotto · 26/08/2015 19:06

No! You were a shining example to us all Grin. Had had given up an awful lot though, has it all gone to pot or just the sugar?

Tenementfunster · 26/08/2015 20:42

Downer I logged back in just to give you massive encouragement-
No recriminations, no regrets, no looking back. You will recover your former brilliance.
It's a massive thing to undo a lifetime of sugar eating. It's hard to do,
I find the more pressure I put on myself the easier it is to fall into temptation.
Good luck, chick

Hellokitty105 · 26/08/2015 22:56

My mums just done the weekly shop and stocked up on chocolate and cake! Cake I can say no to but it's the digestives that call to me!? This will test my will power this weekend but I will remain strong. I may call on the support of this thread if I feel myself faultering. 3 successful days down! Let's make tomorrow number 4!

Dowser · 27/08/2015 09:45

Awwww. Thank you so much. No it's just been a few bits of choc. Everything else still really good.

I had the dawn of realisation at 6-30 am when trying to get another hours sleep ( it didn't happen) that my motivation was for health so am back onthe wagon today.

Grandson has just left the building after a two night break . So back to packing and the last of the wedding things todo.

We can do this and it does get so much easier once you're out of the sugar spike.

Have a good day today everyone. Gorgeous weather at the moment so let's make the most of the last dregs of summer ;-)
