I Quit Sugar - anyone up for this?

Cappster · 10/04/2015 13:51

I tried quitting sugar during January and it was really good - I lost a few pounds, ate really well, felt very good (after initial detox Blush)

I need to do it again but it would be really good to have a bit of support

Any takers?

Yes, wholegrain pasta and stuff is ok. They're complex carbs so are high in fibre and other nutrients. Here's a really succinct, simple explanation of the difference between simple and complex carbs fyi

Hi,

I'm intending on clean eating in August and September - no sugar, no caffiene, no processed foods, reduced carbs and lots of water.

I'm doing it.primarily for my health but have about 3.5 stone to lose too. I'm also returning to yoga weekly with the odd swim at weekends.

Reason I'm joining now is because I can see this will take a lot of planning!

msrisotto · 13/07/2015 17:25

Anyone who has seen the other thread about giving up sugar might have already seen this link, but i think it's worth putting here for reference.
www.telegraph.co.uk/journalists/dan-hyde/11733724/New-government-sugar-advice-will-mean-extreme-diet-changes.html

sootballs, good luck! I'd find reducing carbs at the same time as starting a new regime of eliminating sugar hard I think.

msrisotto · 13/07/2015 20:07

Oh, and i've decided to go properly no (added) sugar, including on weekends. Watch this space....

AbsentMindedNumpty · 14/07/2015 13:09

Hi everyone, I got back last night.

Fab cruise, gorgeous weather (except one thunder storm in Ukraine), and it was lovely to be with family on holiday again.

Foodwise, I was careful but didn't deny myself anything. Just weighed up the options and consequences. Some of the things I did:-

Had one cocktail every day Grin
Used the stairs not the lifts
Swam every day
Limited sugar but did eat one dessert every day
No ice cream at all

Tried on my work trousers this morning. They'd recently started fitting again since I'd started limited sugar and thankfully, they still do! [phew emoticon]

msrissotto, that's a remarkable article, they're not sugar-coating (pun intended) the shocking changes that will have to be made are they? It will be interesting to read/hear of any feedback from this.

I'm not following the Sarah Wilson "I Quit Sugar" thing as it's too much like following a diet plan and I don't do diets, just make personal decisions day to day.

msrisotto · 14/07/2015 19:47

Hehe, I like your priorities there Absent! Grin Well done though, sounds like you had a good holiday, without going mad. Good work!

msrisotto · 14/07/2015 19:51

Also Sarah Wilson is a journalist....no expertise in nutrition or cooking...so i'm not rushing out to buy her book. Same with Sweet Poison author David Gillespie, he was a lawyer.

sootballs · 14/07/2015 21:41

msrisotto yes - I think you are probably right, its going to be very difficult. However I feel that I need to do something and that this will be a way of me kicking myself into shape; the healthiest I have ever eaten was when I ate lower carb (mostly reduced bread/pasta/rice) with lots of vegetables, fish and lean meat. I drank very little alcohol and ate zero sugar. I also smoked like a trooper - which I no longer do.

Ten years later I'm going to try to recapture that approach minus the smoking

AbsentMindedNumpty · 14/07/2015 21:58

Good luck everyone. One step at a time, be kind when you make a 'mistake', learn from it, keep trying. Well, that's what I tell myself anyway....

Dowser · 15/07/2015 10:10

Sounds great mrs Numpty. My friend had one or two weeks all inclusive and never went near the desert trolley. She put on just one pound in weight.

I'm still no sugar. Dontfeellike I'm losing though. Three months on Friday!

Tenementfunster · 15/07/2015 16:44

Three months Saturday for me dowser! Not amazingly different for me on the outside but our insides must look amazing!
Good luck everyone.

msrisotto · 16/07/2015 12:23

Anyone fallen off the wagon? Finding it difficult?

AbsentMindedNumpty · 16/07/2015 12:59

msrisotto, for myself I don't fall of any wagons nowadays Grin because I refuse to actually get on the "diet wagon of failure" any more. [freedom! emoticon]

Finding it difficult? You bet. There are reasons for that though and they are nothing at all to do with being "weak willed" or "lazy" or "stupid" or "greedy" or any other of the nasty, negative words that are regularly bandied about about fat people.Sad

I'm putting a link on here of a website I get monthly newsletters from. This month's article (4 pages long) is particularly relevant I think. Here it is:-

eatingless.com/qanda/qa-full-of-excuses/

In fact today I worked out how to put emails on my Kindle just so I could put this article on it so I could refer to it when necessary (for support). I first copied and pasted it onto a word doc, then just sent it as an attachment to my kindle cloud email address. Easy peasy!

It is worth you reading her previous articles as well to be honest; every one a gem.

Dowser · 17/07/2015 09:36

I bought a skirtkini yesterday. A bikini that's pants covered by skirt at the bottom. Over 35 year since I wore anything like that.

9 weeks to the wedding.

Still plenty of chub on me. The skirtkini is a 14 bottom and a 16 top. Going to look for an 18 today. For a bit more breathing room for the boobs, which i swear are getting bigger. I also bought a size 16 Sophie grey dress which is going back today as I couldn't get it over my hips, never mind closed at the back. Yet I went out in an American size 8 dress last night.

Aaaargh! I've run out of ideas.

The only positive in this is the innards are feeling better!

msrisotto · 17/07/2015 12:14

God, why aren't skirtinis much more common? Why have I never heard of them? Sounds fab Dowser!

Dowser · 17/07/2015 23:58

I tried to buy another one today. Debenhams had none and neither did Primark. My small bhs had loads yet went shopping in another much bigger store today and they had one or two skirts but none in my size or colour.

I'm going to try a few gentle toning exercises.

So gentle I'll probably fall asleep.

At least I have one!

AbsentMindedNumpty · 18/07/2015 09:18

I bought a swimming costume with a built in skirt, plus the matching wrap (black with blue flower pattern). I can't remember where but maybe Evans, but could been Debenhams as I shop there a lot, love Rocha stuff. I really helps in public swimming 'situations' to make me feel more comfortable.

Just getting set for boozy weekend with friends Grin.

Dowser · 18/07/2015 11:36

Yes, I have a costume with skirt as well. I just fancied unleashing a bit more of my flab on the world.

Oh and I don't normally bother with pools. He prefers to swim in the sea but as its a big family holiday / wedding I'm expecting more lazing around the pool with the kids.

Back on track today. My cousinhas been Here for a week and we've eaten out a lot. She's just left so it's nose to grindstone and back to basics.

msrisotto · 18/07/2015 21:00

I was feeling deprived of dessert today (I made chocolate truffles for lunch guests and didn't eat any) so made the banana ice cream I linked to earlier in the thread - it's actually really good! I just made it with some blueberries i had already in the freezer. Brilliant sugar fix.

Dowser · 20/07/2015 09:57

I watched my daughter munch her away through a packet of cadburys shite
With great envy yesterday and nearly cracked.

My innards gave me a rousing cheer when I got home. What they made of the two g and ts I don't know.

So back on track today. Living with a size 10-12 relative for a week is very demoralising!

Not that I want to be so super skinny but while shopping she's pulling out size 10-12 s and me size 14-16s

Even the skirtini which I thought was a 14 is a 16! Bloomin bhs. They do this all the time. They put the wrong size hangers on clothes. I thought I'd picked up a 14 when the label on the skirtini bit was a 16.

Still it was a bit loose! Not so the top which I'm hoping they will get in an 18.

Dowser · 20/07/2015 19:18

Got weighed today and am very pleased to report that I'm 149 pounds or 10-9 .

So now a big push to get rid of those last 9 lbs in 8 weeks before my sept wedding.

Can she do it? I blummin well hope so!

Tenementfunster · 20/07/2015 19:27

Fab! Well done you

msrisotto · 20/07/2015 20:15

Congrats!

Dowser · 20/07/2015 23:32

Thanks nose to the grindstone ( get it out of the trough!)

Not a bad day today , usual onion omelette , usual home made green soup with ham and lentils, salmon boiled rice and peas.
1 apple and a few chips at tonight's quiz.
Soda to drink.

AbsentMindedNumpty · 21/07/2015 08:05

Returned from fab wee break with friends. I drank cider copiously Shock; several pints over the Saturday evening. I rarely drink nowadays but these friends go way back to the days when we all did a lot of drinking/socialising (you know, those young, free and single days) and it was great to reminisce over our past exploits, so many of 'em Grin. I's hard to think we're all approaching retirement age, to be honest as I still feel like I'm in my twenties when with them.

Back to reality now.

Dowser, you comments about your size 10-12 relative, and comparing yourself to them reminded me of why I started dieting originally. I was probably about 14 and it seemed that all my friends were a size 10 so I decided to diet down to their size. I failed miserably though but have kept trying for the last 35 odd years. I have dieted up to a size 20 Confused. How does that happen?

Your story about the wrong size on the hanger made me laugh as it reminded me of a time some years ago when I was shopping for a top and trying one on a in the changing rooms. I thought I'd selected the right size from the label on the hanger, but it wouldn't fit over my head. Cue despair for a moment as I struggled to get it on. It was only then I looked at the label and it was three sizes smaller than I thought. Oh, the relief Grin. Ever since then I have always checked that the hanger and item of clothing say the same size.

Hmm, not sure about an onion omelette Wink but your ham/lentil soup sounds divine.
