I Quit Sugar - anyone up for this?

I tried quitting sugar during January and it was really good - I lost a few pounds, ate really well, felt very good (after initial detox Blush)

I need to do it again but it would be really good to have a bit of support

Any takers?

Don't be at all ashamed. It doesn't help, if anything makes you feel worse and more inclined to eat your feelings better. And also, there really is nothing to be ashamed about. The other way round actually, eating loads of sugar is the norm and eating less is an achievement to be proud of. Not to beat yourself up about if you snap back to the way most people eat....

Dowser, I was really interested on the weight management thread, where you advised the OP ditch white potatoes for sweet potatoes. Why is that? This sounds stupid I know but sweet potatoes taste so sweet to me, I feel there's got to be more natural sugar in them. Not that i've got anything against natural sugar, but I don't know how they could be better for you?

I quite agree with you. It's the usual advice when low carbing. It may be because they are related to the deadly nightshade family and could be allergenic for some people.

Inflammatory foods can lead some people to gain weight.

This may not be the best reason.

Hi,

Was looking for a thread about quitting sugar and found you lot.

I've tried and failed many times at going cold turkey on sugar, so this time I'm following the 7-step Radiant Recovery plan (as detailed in the book Potatoes Not Prozac). It's very gradual and I'm just starting Step 1 tomorrow, which is to eat breakfast every morning which includes protein - I often skip breakfast so it'll be an effort but hopefully it'll make me feel better and I'll want to carry on with it. Step 2 is to journal what you eat and how it makes you feel, so have started that today too.

Feeling hopeful, and frankly I have to do something about my major sugar addiction so I'm going to give it a really serious go!!

Welcome to the thread and your journey Pippin! What made you decide to quit sugar? I've heard of potatoes not prozac, is it worth getting?

Pippinn32 · 16/02/2016 19:12

Hi,

I just eat far too much of the stuff, and yet have never managed to successfully give up. Managed about 10 days before, and it was hellish!

Yes it's a really good read - it's quite old now too so you can pick up a copy very cheaply.

Am still full from my tea but for some reason am pondering having some Revels..!

Pippinn32 · 20/02/2016 16:48

I've just watched That Sugar Film - really fascinating, especially the bit where even though his calorie intake remained the same, he gained over a stone once he introduced lots of sugar into his diet Shock, it's really made me think!

I'm finding having protein at breakfast beneficial, and although I'm still eating some sugary things, I'm mostly having them after a meal and have already reduced the amount I'm having.

msrisotto · 20/02/2016 17:13

That shocked me too Pippin32. And watching him eat bloody yoghurt knowing it was full of sugar was depressing!

Pippinn32 · 03/03/2016 14:32

Hi, I'm still on with gradually reducing my sugar intake, and have been quite successful so far - I'm having so much less than previously, and when I do have anything sweet, I eat it mindfully and really enjoy it.

Anyway, I'm stepping things up a gear now!! I keep hearing good things about Freedom Diet Coach ( www.freedomdietcoach.co.uk if anyone's interested) and have been considering signing up for a personal diet plan for a while. So I emailed them and asked whether they could make me a personal sugar free plan and they can - so I'm signing up Eek!!! Hoping this could be the boost I need to quit the evil stuff completely..!!

Hey, good job pippinn! This is a tough time of year I reckon, especially with Easter coming up. It's been my birthday recently and to be honest, I am still celebrating, and then there's mother's day....so there's more weekend sugar than I would like (still staying strong on weekdays though, seem to have broken that pattern!) at the moment, but I think I'll accept that for the time being. I was gagging for a biscuit last night though. Had a light lunch and was probably low on blood sugar.

I hope that diet plan website gives you what you want!

sk2016 · 05/03/2016 20:25

Wow, now feeling motivated....off to watch that sugar film...!

ghostoftheMNchicken · 28/04/2016 17:09

If anyone is still interested, registration for the I Quit Sugar June online program has just opened up. I've signed up - have been wanting to do it for a while.

BitterLemons1 · 30/04/2016 09:18

Ooh thanks Ghost think I'll check it out. I've lost the weight I want to lose and now want to focus on making a few more healthy changes - quitting sugar/alcohol completely being the main ones left! Is it free to sign up to?

ghostoftheMNchicken · 30/04/2016 14:54

Afraid not. It's £80, so not cheap either, but I've heard good things and I really like the turn the recipes have been taking. The first two books are so so but the latest, Simplicious, is fab. I needed a kick up the arse.
