Whole 30

InanimateCarbonRod · 23/01/2015 13:40

I'm going to do the Whole 30 challenge starting on the 1st of February. Anyone interested in joining in?

For those who don't know what Whole 30 is I'll give the links:

whole30.com/

A brief synopsis is that you basically eat whole foods for all your meals for thirty days. Sugar, grains, dairy and legumes are all off the list.

For any doubters among you here are the testimonials that the whole food way is life changing:

I did a whole 30 a couple of years ago, and it did feel great. I found the restrictions were not sustainable long term, but I might join in. No wine or chocolate on Valentine's day, though.

yumyumpoppycat · 23/01/2015 18:52

lol I might be up for a whole 28!

yumyumpoppycat · 23/01/2015 18:54

I might still have an occasional wine if I join in as I don't drink very often anyway; its all the other stuff mentioned that's my problem!

HollyBdenum · 24/01/2015 11:36

I think I'll go for it, now that I've remembered that Hugh F-W's chorizo spiced pork mince is Whole 28 compliant.

Dowser · 24/01/2015 16:18

So what do you eat?

Lean meat, fish, eggs, fruit and veg, nuts

glenthebattleostrich · 24/01/2015 16:27

What is this choritzo spiced mince you speak of? Sounds delicious

yumyumpoppycat · 24/01/2015 17:12

Pretty much dowser but the meat doesn't have to be lean, just not processed stuff with added preservatives etc, I think some parma hams are ok.

yumyumpoppycat · 24/01/2015 17:14

Oh and potatoes, squash, sweet potato are all allowed, it's not low carb.

HollyBdenum · 24/01/2015 17:30

This is the chorizo recipe.

www.rivercottage.net/recipes/tupperware-chorizo/

The recipe says to make it into tiny meatballs, and it is very nice like that, but my favourite thing to do is to make a pizza alternative. I put a bag of peppery salad leaves in a bowl with some sliced cherry tomatoes and black olives. I slice red onions and red or yellow peppers thinly and fry them very gently in coconut oil until they are soft and the onions are brownish. I take them out of the pan, turn the heat up and add some of the Tupperware chorizo breaking it up as it fries so it goes crispy. I put the onions and tomatoes back in the pan, turn off the heat and stir to mix up the flavours. I add a spoonful of red wine vinegar, stir, empty the contents of the frying pan into the bowl, toss the salad and eat it while it is still hot.

It's nice with added avocado or (if eating dairy) chunks of mozzarella or Cheshire cheese. I like to bake the olives a little bit so that they go warm and abut crispy like olives on a pizza.

yumyumpoppycat · 24/01/2015 17:36

Ooh looks delicious Holly!

InanimateCarbonRod · 24/01/2015 22:58

Ok ok whole 28 it is! Grin

Make sure you've planty of fat from meat, olive oil and olives, eggs etc. I can't wait to make roasted sweet potato with mozzarella and bacon. Oh the bacon!

This is another of my favourite recipes. The leftovers are delicious and moist, and I freeze any extra gravy in silicone muffin cases to eat later.

InanimateCarbonRod · 25/01/2015 13:38

That's one of my favourites too Holly

I'm using a lot of Paleo recipes because they're really all whole food too.

I'm doing my meal plans out. First thing is zucchine noodles (zoodles!) Cantonese style. I also use cauliflower "rice" for this recipe too.

Have you tried roasted cauliflower rice? It is so good that I usually scoff half of it before it reache my plate.

yumyumpoppycat · 26/01/2015 10:01

6 days to go! I never do proper meal planning, its nice to have a week to prepare, thanks for posting this thread in advance Carbon.

I properly fell off the primal wagon at christmas, have been logging a bit on mfp recently but finding it hard to get back into eating well so this is a good kick up the bum, and there is something more motivating about a challenge with some buddies Flowers oh and while we can Cake .

HollyBdenum · 26/01/2015 14:09

So, what are we all going to eat on Shrove Tuesday instead of pancakes?

HollyBdenum · 26/01/2015 14:12

I am thinking that might make bud wheat pancakes for everyone else and then have an omelette with the same filling for me. That would work, and still feel pancakey without being a cheat.

InanimateCarbonRod · 26/01/2015 14:15

I'm making 2 ingredient banana pancakes. They're delicious!! Just a ripe banana and 2 eggs. I add a dash of vanilla extract and cinnamon. Yum yum.

Hi Holly and carbon whole30 28 is almost upon us! I have been coldy this week and not prepared or cut out anything gah! How are you doing with prep? Think I might have to check out some w30 sites. I might log on mfp if either of you want to but maybe its a bit boring and unnecessary?

yumyumpoppycat · 30/01/2015 16:06

I am certainly not currently checking things out while eating a snickers...
