After Megglevache's inspirational thread and photos showing her FIVE STONE loss I am inspired to start yet again.

I'm not dieting. I'm just going to avoid wheat and sugar. And good waaaayyy back on wine.

So no bread, pasta, biscuits, cake, sweets, white rice etc.

the chickpeas are homemade, super cheap and easy-peasy - open a tin; a squirt of oil from a sprayer thing, a little salt and whatever spice you fancy - I used zaa'tar today but raw el hangout works well as does cumin (slightly crushed seeds ideally) or paprika or a mixture of what you've got. toss it all together and pop on a baking tray on medium heat until they are as crisp as you like them…they don't dry out completely like the ones you can buy.

Can't give you temps or timings as my oven is so old and knackered now that its a good job I cook by intuition not recipes…..

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/12/2014 23:35

Thanks, I'll give that a try, we've got some left over enchilada spice mix that would be just the thing. I'm the same with cooking, it drives DH mad, he'll say how long does this need to be in for and the answer is always "till it's done", he hates that and wants exact timings for everything. He can't get his head round the fact that when the timer goes the food isn't necessarily ready, it's just time to check it.

Yay! I'm not confident I will lose anything this week (weigh-in Fri), I still seem to be eating a lot, but am treating this week as an adjustment to new habits.

CecyHall · 03/12/2014 08:51

Well done cider!

WildFlowersAttractBees · 03/12/2014 09:27

Well done Cider. Hoping for a loss on Friday too!

DH and I have just booked a long weekend away for May so I now have something to aim for!

CiderwithBuda · 03/12/2014 09:35

Thanks!

Feeling happy.

But am out tonight for indian food and Prosecco and again tomorrow night for dinner and there will be more prosecco. Will try and avoid the carby bits of the Indian food tonight. And will drink lots of water.

OP posts:
WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 03/12/2014 11:10

Indian's not too bad as meals out go, skip the starter and have chicken tikka and plain rice. The poppadoms and naans are hard to resist though.

I'm out tonight at a friend's house where it will be drinks and nibbles, then out for an Indian on Friday too, but hoping for the best.

I've just been thinking over my week, I haven't eaten normal bread since Saturday, no cereal since Sunday, no pasta at all (although will be having some tonight), no sweet biscuits, only two very small helpings of potato, one small pizza, a few crackers, plus a lot of Ryvita and rye bread, quite a change.

MixenLane · 03/12/2014 11:21

Well done Cider!

CiderwithBuda · 03/12/2014 14:17

Thanks Mixen! How are you doing?

The Indian tonight is actually at a friends house - it's book club and every is bringing something. I'm bringing starters and raita. I think if I just have curry and Dahl I should be ok. Whether I manage to stick to that is another matter!

Ok day
Ran/walked/hobbled for Day 3 of advent running, cycled about to get my shopping, went to a mellow stretchy hatha class. Worked in between. Chia concoction for breakfast, nakd bar for snack (yum), soup for lunch and homemade veggie curry for supper.
Early night now to prevent snacking, I think I would start fantasising about crisps tonight. Also aiming for morning ashtanga class….going out in the cold and dark at 6am will be a challenge…..

AggressiveBunting · 04/12/2014 07:46

Ugh. I am so off the wagon. The temperature here has plummeted (only to about 12-15 degrees but that is cold when you've got no heating and aren't used to it) and it's making me want to eat everything that doesnt eat me first. Add to that a work leaving drinks and a couple of dinners out. I havent exercised much this week as I really need to shake this cough before i go on a 12 hr flight on Saturday and the race on Sunday really set me back- amazed my pelvic floor survived Monday's coughing fits. How could things get worse?? Well I have to go get my fat measured in an hour. Sob.

CecyHall · 04/12/2014 08:04

I really fucked up yesterday. I didn't eat breakfast as I wasn't hungry so I thought I'd follow the only eat if you are actually hungry rule. But it set me off course all day and I binged in the afternoon and then ate dominos for tea.

I'm feeling really low about it today, I know I need to pick myself up and be sensible again but I just feel like an idiot and don't know what I want or should eat anymore, I get so confused with what is the best way to eat, it just gets all too much.

Sorry for being such a downer, hope everyone has a good day today.

TheRealMaryMillington · 04/12/2014 09:13

Today is a new day Cecy. Don't let it derail you.

I see you your only eat when you're hungry rule and raise you the 80/20 rule - eat well 80% of the time - the dominos etc can be your 20%.

I read a blog on something (the primal eating guy - don't do primal but prefer not to eat dairy or wheat if I can manage it so look on there for recipes) who said "cheat days" were good for you overall both psychologically (so you don't feel deprived) and physiologically (so you metabolism gets reset). Two key things though- don't feel guilty or low, accept you made a choice and hopefully you enjoyed the food, and also don't make it a "cheat week".

I read this book a little while ago and going to dig it out again. It basically says, eat proper food, and not too much of it. Its a really good anti-diet industry way to think about what you eat, enjoyable to read too - very little to confuse. In Defence of Food.

Aggressive Bunting - intrigued by how you get your fat measured - is that for pleasure or medicinal purposes?

Hope you had a nice evening Cider, well done for the weight loss so far! I have my book group dinner out on Friday - to a turkish place….how will I resist the bread? And the wine? I think I will just look for the least worst options and try to keep in mind that I want to do yoga in the morning.

Epic fail for me on the yoga at dawn this morning, DS was up in the night…slept through the alarm….ah well...

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 04/12/2014 09:43

Cecy - just start again. It will happen to all of us at times, the main thing is definitely not to let it turn into a bad week.

I had a reasonable day yesterday, snacking is still a problem. However on the plus side I went to a friends house for drinks and nibbles, had two small glasses of wine but didn't touch the nibbles at all. However I was famished when I got home and had a couple of slices of Ryvita and soft cheese.

Today will be a challenge - I am in charge of the cake stall at the school Christmas Fair. I'm not going to get time to exercise either, but I did go swimming yesterday.

CecyHall · 04/12/2014 11:56

Thank you both- it's so helpful so have people to whinge at talk to when it's tough. Mary I actually have that book sitting unread in my kindle library, perhaps it would be useful to actually read it!

SoonToBeMrsB · 04/12/2014 17:08

Hi everyone, TheRealMaryMillington directed me here because I'm sick to death of counting calories and still being fat Blush

I'm desperate to be able to just eat sensibly and not be so horribly black and white about food. It's like that nursery rhyme: "when she was good she was very, very good but when she was bad she was awful"!

Rumandcokeplease · 04/12/2014 17:40

Hi everyone, do you mind of I join you? I've got about 3 stone to lose (after having 2 kids quickly); I lost 4 stone about 6 years ago and kept it off until I had children so I should know what to do but I just can't seem to stop eating! And I know what I eat isn't good for me but I can't stop reaching for mince pies at the moment! Thanks!

WildFlowersAttractBees · 04/12/2014 21:44

Evening all, and welcome to the newcomers.

Firstly everyone who has had a bad day (or few days) draw a line under it and start again... the longer it goes on the harder it becomes. I lost 2 stone a few years ago then gained it all back by thinking 'well I have been terrible for days, what's the point' Sad.

I have been low carbing/counting WW points all week. Went away last night for DH's b'day and had the warm Cajun chicken salad with yogurt dressing on the side and no pud but 2 glasses of wine. Hotel breakfast was harder to deny but had bacon, mushroom and black pudding. All grilled and no bread.

Then we went shopping so lots of walking but then DH had the choice of where to go for birthday tea and he went for the handmade burger co... carbs were everywhere!!! I went for the chicken, rocket and red onion pitta. I figured it was the best overall option. I did have a small piece of homemade birthday cake when we got home though!

Weigh in is tomorrow morning... eeekkkk!

Not a lick of exercise done, need inspiration for this cold weather.

TheRealMaryMillington · 04/12/2014 23:11

Very weary today but plodded round my advent "run" which is about 50% running, 50% brisk walking, very colourless day but I live near the beach where it is always beautiful whatever the weather. Rain forecast for tomorrow - that's when I'll really have to dig deep!

Made a gorgeous minestrone (no pasta but with cannelloni beans) for dinner - it was really good and have a smallish portion leftover for lunch tomorrow.

AggressiveBunting · 05/12/2014 01:38

Aggressive Bunting - intrigued by how you get your fat measured - is that for pleasure or medicinal purposes?

I won a 9 wk sports nutrition course in a raffle and it includes caliper measurements done at the start and then at 3 week intervals. It's quite helpful as I'm trying to gain lean mass through my weight training, but with just scales it's hard to know if what you're gaining is muscle or fat. My body fat is pretty low, but I'm trying to eat better for performance reasons as I was jeopardising my recovery/ progression with my crappy diet. Also, because I train over 30km+, if you dont eat well and maintain high glycogen stores, you have to rely on a lot of gels/ isotonic drinks which can give you some "adverse digestive reactions" - not great when you're on a trail with no toilet for 10 miles.

wildflowers I drew the line (normally I'd just wait till Monday). Got up this morning, ran 3km to Crossfit, did Crossfit, ran back 3km, had my whey shake and 2 hard boiled eggs and some cucumber sticks. Boom! I'm back! Going out for Thai tonight but it's Northern thai which is drier and hotter- actually pretty healthy.

WildFlowersAttractBees · 05/12/2014 08:41

Weighing in at 14st 13.75lbs this morning... and exactly 3lbs lighter than last week Grin.

Well done for keeping it up Mary and what a comeback Aggressive.

My aim for next week is exercise.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 05/12/2014 09:07

Morning all,

Welcome to Soontobe and RumandCoke.

Well done on this week's loss Wildflowers, Aggressive - that's an impressive start to the day, Mary - well done on the ADvent running.

I had a "day off" yesterday, I've decided not to use the words bad day as it just makes me feel negative about the whole process. Day off meant no formal exercise, but I was setting up, running and packing up the school Christmas Fair and ferrying DCs around in the evening, so not a lazy day either. Foodwise, it ended up being a supermarket sandwich and crisps for lunch and a smallish helping of Chinese takeaway for dinner. I did manage to run the cake stall for an hour and only eat a tiny bit of broken mince pie though, I think that's the sort of change in thinking I need, normally I will eat 2 or 3 cakes (I run this stall several times a year).

Oh and good news, I've found a rye bread that I actually quite like, the Village Bakery seed one from Waitrose, it is much less treacly tasting than the others I've had.

Weigh in coming up!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 05/12/2014 09:09
