After Megglevache's inspirational thread and photos showing her FIVE STONE loss I am inspired to start yet again.

I'm not dieting. I'm just going to avoid wheat and sugar. And good waaaayyy back on wine.

So no bread, pasta, biscuits, cake, sweets, white rice etc.

Please join!

I'm trying to cut out crap carbs too, albeit for health rather than weight loss reasons. I'm not that mad on sweets, choc, cake etc. - my downfalls are pasta, pizza and bread (and wine.........and beer........ and champagne... and G&Ts).

I've found that beef jerky makes an easy snack as fills you up and low cal/ high protein/ portable and non-perishable. I get the Jack Links one.

WiseKneeHair · 28/11/2014 09:59

I found you.
May I join? I've been " on the wagon" since end of October and have lost 7lbs Smile
I am officially no longer obese, but overweight today. Just another 2ish stone to get to a healthy BMI!
I calorie count, using MFP, but try to stick with not so crappy food. I do have a serious Curly Wurly habit though.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 28/11/2014 10:21

Morning all,

I weighed in this morning at 14 stone. At the end of August I was 14st 7lbs, I got that first 7 off over a few weeks but have faltered again and been around the 14 mark for the last couple of months. I'm 47 and have been fluctuating between 12st7lb and 13st7lb most of my adult life, but 14st7lb was a new high. I need a serious boot up the bum. Oddly I am still in size 16 clothes, sometimes I have had to go up to an 18 at 13st7lb, that has usually been enough to send me on another weightloss campaign.

So, this morning I have had a slice of toast with some low fat cheese spread (instead of butter), a bit or marmite and a boiled egg on it. I know the toast isn't great, but I just can't seem to find any form of low carb breakfast that keeps me full like this combination does. I might try rye bread again, but the last loaf I bought was horrible and no one else would eat it either so it got wasted. What are Ryvita made of? Anyone know?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 28/11/2014 10:23

OK, just looked up Ryvita, they would be a good alternative for me. And I love them :)

Megglevache · 28/11/2014 10:41

Whoknows- do you toast your Rye bread, to be it tastes much nuttier than if you have it raw (which I've grown to love the taste of actually)

It's also very solid and might keep you topped up and feeling satisfied for a while. DRINK WATER!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 28/11/2014 10:49

I don't think I did toast it, it was a few weeks ago, so not sure now. I do drink lots of water, so that's good. I might have a look at the Rye breads again next time I'm shopping, but I'd be very happy with Ryvita in any case, also for lunches - we don't have a toaster at work. My only problem with Ryvita is limiting them, they are so nice!

TheRealMaryMillington · 28/11/2014 11:47

I am so inspired by Megglevache. I'm mid 40s (how did that happen?) and have been overweight since having first baby (who is now 10). Managed to get a good bit of excess off between babies 2 and 3 but its back on again.
Enough is enough. I'm pretty active, cycle everywhere, do (fast & sweaty) yoga, swim 3 times per week, canoeing….so reasonably toned and flexible and energetic….do it for my mental health. Toying with the idea of some horrific interval training on occasion BUT I JUST EAT TOO MUCH and am probably doing 80/20 the wrong way round.

So….I like rules. So I'm going to ditch the white carbs, work on portion control and crucially try to stop picking/grazing. Also force myself to eat a healthy breakfast and have veg at every meal.

Had a chia, almond milk and cinnamon concoction for breakfast.

Lunch might be poached egg with asparagus or spinach or leftover dahl

Dinner is planned to be salmon fishcakes (will have to have some spud in them but maybe not too much) with salad and green beans and asparagus

So far so good but I will have to have some sort of snack or lose my mind. The big challenge will be not to pick at the kid's after school snack or tea (and thus end up eating double).

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 28/11/2014 12:02

Cooking for the family is where I struggle, the DCs and I love pasta and it is going to be really hard to not eat that when they are having it. They are also fussy eaters which limits the options for changing the meals we all eat too much.

Anyway, I'm off for a swim in a minute.

One thing that does work for me is making a cup of tea or having a glass of water every time I get the munchies.

CiderwithBuda · 28/11/2014 12:17

Hello! So nice to have some buddies. Was a bit afraid I would be talking to myself!

I was 15 St 11 and a quarter this morning.

Have had rye toast and peanut butter for breakfast. Not sure what to have for lunch. No salads and hummus left. Maybe poached eggs.

I'm going to get back into making soups too.

TheRealMaryMillington - your concoction sounds interesting. I do green smoothies sometimes with almond milk.

WhoKnows - for pasta dishes you can substitute shredded courgette. I have just shredded it but I recently bought a spiraliser thingie although haven't used it.

Cauliflower is a good substitute for rice - put raw cauliflower through a food processor or grate it and then just microwave it for a couple of minutes.

If anyone is looking for inspiration on low carb eating and/or clean eating there is lots on Pinterest.

The chia thing was ok, it went kind of like a rice pudding. Cinnamon is brilliant for fending off cravings for sweet stuff.

Have you tried almond or cashew or hazelnut butter Buda? Nicer than peanut.

I have treated myself to a lot of lovely Pukka herbal teas in delicious flavours, hoping to drink one of those instead of grazing. I might also try to do all the cooking and prep after lunch when I am absolutely not hungry to try to stop myself picking at stuff.

CecyHall · 28/11/2014 12:32

I love eggs so much but they are my cooking nemesis, I always say if I had lots of money Id have an egg chef. Poached eggs are the best.

CiderwithBuda · 28/11/2014 12:36

Haven't tried cashew or hazelnut butters but have almond butter.

Cecy - we got a great egg poacher thingie from Lakeland - it's in their microwave accessories section I think. It's great. You heat water in it for a minute, add the eggs, microwave them and hey presto nicely poached eggs. A bit of trial and error to get the. How you like them but it's fab.

How are we all doing?

So far so good here. Although it will change later. DH has requested curry for his birthday meal. Birthday was Tuesday but he has been away.

There will also be wine.

But that is ok. 80/20 rule!

Just been shopping and bought:

Rye bread (different brand)
Ryvita
Jerky
Avocados

WiseKneeHair · 28/11/2014 16:59

Porridge for breakfast, chicken salad for lunch, and spinach and chicken curry with bulgar wheat for dinner.
No alcohol for me this weekend as I'm working. As part of my healthy eating, I now only drink at the weekend so this'll mean two weeks alcohol free Shock It may be a record! Grin

CecyHall · 28/11/2014 17:04

I'll start tomorrow Blush

CecyHall · 28/11/2014 17:05

That microwave egg thing sounds ideal btw, thanks! I can't even get fried eggs right without them going all crispy on the bottom so it's got to be better than my attempts!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 28/11/2014 18:37

I poach eggs in a frying pan, bring the water just to the boil (so little bubbles are forming round the edges) then take off the heat, put an egg in, cover and wait for 6 mins, no swirling, no vinegar, just lift out with a fish slice and dry on kitchen roll. Normally on weekday mornings I just boil my egg though.

TheRealMaryMillington · 28/11/2014 18:43

Lots of herbal tea.
Teaspoon of almond butter from the vat of it I bought yesterday
Nibbled carrot and celery sticks whilst kids ate (stopped me eating their veggie sausages and cheesy mash). Had about a tablespoon of coconut frozen yoghurt whilst serving the kids theirs (This is my absolute downfall)
I have made the salmon fishcakes (smidgen of potato) for dinner - may just have one with tons of salad and veg (DH will happily scoff the other 5).

I need a menu plan for next week to help me stay out of the kitchen and know what I'm eating so I don't accidentally fall into a vat of cheesy pasta and have to eat my way out.

TheRealMaryMillington · 28/11/2014 18:44

These are good

WildFlowersAttractBees · 28/11/2014 21:53

I got organised! Meal planning for the week done. Ended up in Costa for lunch so had a chicken fajita wrap Sad but had it with a black coffee and a bottle of water. Had scallop, chorizo and orzo salad for dinner. Only 30g of pasta so not too bad. I have a notebook and every time I drink 500 ml of water I cross off a box. Aiming for 3L a day!

CecyHall · 28/11/2014 21:57

Well done wild sounds great!

My 3 year old said I was as fat as daddy pig today (in that delightfully honest way only 3 year olds can get away with Hmm) so if that's not motivation I don't know what is!

WildFlowersAttractBees · 28/11/2014 22:08

As the not so proud owner of a 3yr old I know where you are coming from. I need to look at exercise next Confused.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/11/2014 08:10

Right, slipped a bit last night. DH opened a big bag of my favourite flavour crisps, and I went to the pub and was given a coke instead of a diet coke, but someone else had bought the round so I couldn't really say anything. I left half of it though.

Just eaten toasted rye bread and egg for breakfast, it was edible but definitely not pleasant, smothered in marmite is going to have to be the way forward I think. I've got this weird aftertaste of black treacle. I think once this loaf is used it'll be Ryvita for me.

Not sure how the weekend is going to pan out, off to the ILs later this morning for an overnight stay and they eat a very carb heavy diet. Will do my best!

TheRealMaryMillington · 29/11/2014 08:30

Like a weak willed fool I managed to eat a (small) packet of (low sugar, non dairy) dark chocolate last night. 187 calories I didn't need. Delicious though.
On the upside, I am drinking a lemongrass and ginger tea and about to go to yoga.

Need to meal plan when I get home. Ideas please…. especially for meat-free things
