Too much fruit can inhibit your weight loss?? Arrrgggghhhhhh

Just read this morning that 'too much fruit can make you fat!' I really hope this isn't the case as I'm not eating much at all apart from salads and soup with the occasional slice of bread but I eat quite a lot of fruit to fill myself up.

I will more than likely eat 2 apples, 1 banana, 2 tangerines, handful of raspberries etc etc.

I try and eat raw veg in my salads like broccoli and cauli and carrots and cabbage, celery etc.

This has worried me, now I think I'm never going to lose weight because I eat loads of fruit :(

I'm doing a bit of walking (with 9MO DD strapped to my back) the route I do, twice a day is down hill on the way there but up hill on the way back (steep up hill).

Please someone reassure me I can lose weight doing what I'm doing, I jut keep reason things that make me think I can't do anything roght

Well, large amounts of fruit can impede weight loss because it's full of sugar. It won't actually fill you up, either (not for any length of time anyway - sugar again!) - you need fat and protein for that.

However, whole fruit is good for you in other ways as you're also getting the fibre and vits, and exercise is good for you, so... health wise you'll be doing yourself some good. But I wouldn't count on much weightloss if you are eating large amounts of sugar per day.

How much weight do you have to lose?

prawnypoos · 17/05/2014 13:06

About 5 stone :( just when I thought I was turning a corner :(

PurpleBoot · 17/05/2014 13:12

My dh has lost about 3.5 stone even though snacking on fruit - you need to eat the lower carb fruits eg strawberries, raspberries, blackberries.

rootypig · 17/05/2014 13:20

Fruit makes me more hungry tbh, I think losing weight is in part about getting out of the habit of eating so frequently - the more I snack the more I think about food. So it's not just the nutritional content of the fruit, I don't think, though it's not great, but the constant stimulating of your digestive system.

teaandthorazine · 17/05/2014 13:32

Fruit will make you more hungry because a) it's not satiating like fat or protein and b) the sugar will raise your blood glucose level, which means that when it comes back down again a couple of hours later, you'll need to eat again.

Don't despair OP - fruit isn't off limits but as pp say, you're better off sticking to berries rather than eg bananas. And as much veg as you like!

If you are snacking a lot and feeling that you need to 'fill yourself up' then I would consider looking at lower carb ways of eating, rather than calorie counting (am making the assumption that's what you're doing, apologies if I'm wrong). Olives, nuts, cheese, berry fruit etc...

prawnypoos · 17/05/2014 13:48

I haven't snacked as much today. It's such a minefield. Feel as though everything I'm doing is wrong.

No one got fat eating apples. You need more protein though from what you've said you're eating. Keep goingSmile

prawnypoos · 17/05/2014 14:01

Thank you drama queen. I will get there, gonna be a l

Joules68 · 17/05/2014 14:06

I lost 5 stone last year.... And have kept it off too. I use the low carb way of eating

It works because you just don't feel hungry once you break the 'sugar' cycle. You need fat and protein as mentioned up thread

And more exercise too. Could you do a DVD whilst your baby is napping?

prawnypoos · 17/05/2014 14:11

I am walking about 3-4 miles everyday and that is honestly about all I have time for-cleaning the oven with one hand at the moment haha. Nap!? What's that!? Lol.

I have to walk up a pretty steep bank to be fair. Some days I have the chance to do more than others though

Also (forgot to mention) doing the 7 minute work out. I'm struggling with some of the moves but I'm not doing too badly considering.

Log everything you eat on My Fitness Pal or Food Focus. Input any exercise undertaken and enter your body stats.

If you are eating too much fruit you will go over your calorie allowance and not lose weight.

Please don't think it is all too complicated as low fat/high fat/fruit/juice are one minute good and one minute bad. If you undereat your body's calorie requirement (albeit not excessively for a continuous period) then you will lose weight.

As others have said you might not feel as full or might be driving sugar highs or lows but that doesn't change whether you will lose weight, rather more how hard you are Lilly to find it.

I lost 4stone using Food Focus to ensure I kept within my 1200/1300 calorie a day limit.

prawnypoos · 17/05/2014 14:22

I'm using my fitness pal Nd have treated myself to a fruit pastille ice lolly after dinner. I know it's so easy to get blinded with science but I just want the results :(

I'm so impatient, I'm very much all or nothing with dieting an anything else for that matter.
So when I change my way of eating I literally won't even have a square of chocolate or a sip of alcohol for long periods of time. After the first week though I have found that I don't really crave it that much anyway.

teaandthorazine · 17/05/2014 14:22

Exercise is extremely good for you for all sorts of reasons, but it's not actually a terribly effective way of losing weight in itself.

Walking up steep hills will get you toned and healthy, which is bloody marvellous so don't stop doing it, but the vast majority of the actual weight loss will be down to what you put in your mouth.

Have you considered lower carb? It really does work quite spectacularly well for a lot of people because it's all about the way the body actually deals with the food we eat. Research is showing all the time that weight loss is WAY more complicated than simply 'burning calories' and that our obsession with that is probably half the reason we have an obesity crisis. The foods you're eating might be low in calories but they're probably high in sugar, meaning you keep getting hungry and...well, you can see how it's hard to lose weight that way!

SoftSheen · 17/05/2014 14:24

I eat loads of fruit every day and have always been slim. Fruit does contain sugar, but also lots of fibre, water and vitamins. I disagree with other posters who say it doesn't fill you up. Bananas in particular are great if you want a filling, healthy snack. What you need to avoid are refined sugars in processed crap such as cake, chocolate, breakfast cereals etc. Also refined carbohydrates such as white bread which are rapidly converted to sugars.

Eat lots of fresh vegetables and fruit, some protein foods such as lean meat, eggs, fish, nuts and pulses, and dairy products, and modest portions of complex carbohydrates such as wholemeal bread, potatoes, brown rice and wholegrain cereals. Include good fats such as those in avocados, nuts, seeds and oily fish.

Good luck, sounds like you have a long road ahead but I'm sure it will be worth it Smile

prawnypoos · 17/05/2014 14:26

I lost weight before but I telly deprived myself for the first couple of weeks but found when I started eating proper, square meals with meat and veg that I lost more.

I think that there's no way I can't be losing weight but don't want it slowing down

OP posts:
BellaVita · 17/05/2014 14:30

I have cut my fruit snacking right down and it has made a difference.

Well done btw for making a start x

teaandthorazine · 17/05/2014 14:31

Ok, tbh it sounds a little as if you are expecting miracles to happen.

It will slow down. However you choose to handle your weightloss, whether it's by calorie counting, low carb, those bloody awful shakes etc, it will slow down after the first couple of weeks. You cannot avoid this, and actually it's important that it does because the body can't sustain big losses for long without an impact on health. Plus, the quicker you lose, the quicker it goes back on.

You didn't put those 5 stone on overnight...you're not going to lose them that way either.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/05/2014 15:38

PO have pm'd you :)

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/05/2014 16:05

OP I meanGrin

prawnypoos · 17/05/2014 17:20

Yep I agree. And I hate those slimming shakes too.

My friend, who is a size 10 is on slim fast at the moment. I'm trying to be healthy but I am so impatient and tea you are right, it ain't gonna happen over night otherwise everyone would be slim.

Thanks drama queen, will check it out

Well regardless of what "they say", how has your diet been working for YOU?

How long have you been at it, how much have you lost, how do you feel on it?

prawnypoos · 17/05/2014 17:31

I don't know really as I don't have a pair of scales, I decided that I would wait until I could feel a difference in myself eg looser clothes, comments from people then I would buy a pair of scales as I have an idea of my weight but don't wan to be completely put off if its more than I thought. There's a method in my madness.

Just a couple of weeks but its only the last week that I have really slogged

OP posts:
tobysmum77 · 17/05/2014 17:47

have you thought about weightwatchers? You can eat as much fruit as you like. I disagree that fruit makes you fat but you have to eat filling stuff for meals also.
