Too much fruit can inhibit your weight loss?? Arrrgggghhhhhh

Just read this morning that 'too much fruit can make you fat!' I really hope this isn't the case as I'm not eating much at all apart from salads and soup with the occasional slice of bread but I eat quite a lot of fruit to fill myself up.

I will more than likely eat 2 apples, 1 banana, 2 tangerines, handful of raspberries etc etc.

I try and eat raw veg in my salads like broccoli and cauli and carrots and cabbage, celery etc.

This has worried me, now I think I'm never going to lose weight because I eat loads of fruit :(

I'm doing a bit of walking (with 9MO DD strapped to my back) the route I do, twice a day is down hill on the way there but up hill on the way back (steep up hill).

Please someone reassure me I can lose weight doing what I'm doing, I jut keep reason things that make me think I can't do anything roght

fruit and must veg is point free on weightwatchers. Are you talking about the old version? In any case I used the h&f version mainly where you can eat what you like from green foods. The simple fact is that ww/sw -type approaches work. It is about eating enough so you aren't constantly hungry and basically adopting the principles long term.

whoever you talk to will have different ideas though - the other possible one to look at op is the cavewoman diet. A friend of mine absolutely swears by it. Again though is long term cos of you give up the weight goes back on.

Kewcumber · 18/05/2014 08:04

Again though is long term cos of you give up the weight goes back on.

Thats true of every "diet" - if you go back to eating how you ate before you will put weight on (because thats how you put the weight on first time around).

OP isn;t on a particular diet - she had read somewhere that eating too much fruit inhibits weight loss and she eats quite a lot.

OP - eating too much of anything inhibits weight loss.

I suppose everybody is different. My DSD is 4 and DD is neArly 10 months.

DD is like a dust bin, she will eat ANYTHING, which is great as she loves fruit and veg!! DSD is a nightmare, she won't eat anything fruit or veg wise.

We don't have crisps and chocolate in our house and she basically eats bread the whole times she's here. She asks for crisps and chocolate but I say that she has to eat some fruit and veg first before she can have a treat.

I always put veg on her plate but she picks it off onto her dads plate. We have always eaten healthy meals, I try to make every thing from scratch if time permits, just after DD was born it fell by the way side a bit but I'm back on track now. Our problem is probably portion sizes and I used to snack on unhealthy things too. I couldn't walk past the shop without going in for a chocolate bar, now I buy myself a magazine instead :)

I hope I didn't sound nosy asking about your dcs ages, just explaining how I managed to avoid some food quite easily. I was also fortunate that dds had never been to MacDdonalds (still haven't our town doesn't have one) and I can imagine it would be even harder to lose weight if I had teenagers demanding Gregg's or mcdonalds.

prawnypoos · 18/05/2014 08:54

We're the same in that respect - the nearest McDonald's is about 30 miles away! I don't think DSD has a particularly healthy diet at her mums house.

Anyway I try with her but I don't seem to be getting anywhere, just hope it doesn't rub off on DD.

Nope you didn't sound nosy at all. I used to be a nightmare for finishing off DSDs meals as she will leave a good 3/4 of them

OP unless you are eating a massive amount of fruit it won't hinder your weight gain :) in a typical day I will have an apple, strawberries, grapes and maybe a pear and I've lost 2 stone since the beginning of the year. You could googled 'freelee the banana girl' for a laugh!

tobysmum77 · 18/05/2014 11:04

Kew the op is trying to lose weight Confused . So surely doing that by watching what you eat is being on a diet?

Whitershadeofpale · 18/05/2014 11:17

No I'm talking about the current pro points plan. Fruit and most veg is points free BUT you're only meant to have 5 portions a day, any more a day and you should be counting it because it still contains calories and sugar.

I used to be a helper and a lot of people wouldn't lose or put on and not understand it but when you looked at their tracker they were eating masses of fruit (not so much veg) partially bananas. Fruit is wonderful and good for you but I think a lot of people do eat too much when 'dieting'

ppeatfruit · 18/05/2014 16:02

It all depends on a lot of different things ; I have lost 3 and a half stone eating fruit but ON IT"S OWN e.g. for breakfast or in between meals then it's easier on your digestion.

I am still maintaining and follow the paul Mckenna way of eating plus my blood type. We are all different so react in varying ways to all foods including fruit but I have never calorie counted in my life.

It's brilliant prawny too to not weigh yourself obsessively I just weighed after 2 months and was surprised to see that I'm just under 9 stone now (even though my clothes are definitely looser).

The exercise will help a lot too.

prawnypoos · 18/05/2014 18:43

I'm using myfitnesspal just as a rough guide, not coining down to the last calorie. Just so I have a general idea of how much I'm eating/burning etc.

And you are right Bout the weighing. I got obsessive last time an would feel really be if I had maintained or not lost as much as I'd hoped.

Can't believe how I'm not craving chocolate et like I used to!

I said she wasn;t on a *particular" diet (as she made clear herself. I was responding to someone if she was on teh XYZ diet (can;t remember which one

prawnypoos · 18/05/2014 19:11

Sorry for the typos!! I should preview before I post! Yes kew, I tend to think of it as a healthier new way of living, not a diet

I'll tell you a foolproof way to get started on weight loss ;

1.Give up or cut right down (if you OD) on 'normal' teas and coffees every day and fizzy high sugar (and 'diet') drinks.

2.Eat your last meal before 7.30 p.m.

  1. Don't mix high protein and carbs at the same meal. E.g. no meat with bread or potatoes. but plenty of salads and green veg.

i know that ALL the above work well to maintain weight loss too!!

prawnypoos · 19/05/2014 12:39

Thanks fruit! That's what I've been doing or trying to do :) sometimes though being a busy mummy and farmers wife it's hard to manage tea before 7:30pm but most nights I do and I never eat anything heavy like loads of pasta and bread. It's usually just a soup or salad

OP posts:
ppeatfruit · 19/05/2014 14:46

The Hay Way of Eating (not mixing protein and carbs at the same meal) is much easier now because you can get rice pasta etc. i find that rice is better for weight loss and you can make a lovely sauce with soya protein. So you CAN have the spag bol type of meal!

I have fruit and nuts and or pumpkin seeds if I get peckish later on in the evening.

prawnypoos · 19/05/2014 15:47

I just think its great how I no longer find all the crap junk food appealing anymore. I hardly crave it. Don't think I've had chocolate for over 4 weeks and that is amazing for me!!

If I can do it, anyone can! Something has just clicked in my head.

ppeatfruit · 19/05/2014 16:21

Fantastic! Well done prawny Grin

specialsubject · 20/05/2014 10:41

if you've stopped eating thickly buttered crumpets by the packet that will go a long way towards reducing calorie intake!

wholemeal bread is complex carbs and is an essential part of food intake.

what time you eat makes no difference at all. In the Med they eat around 9 or 10pm and are no fatter than anywhere else.

it is eat properly, move more. End of.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 20/05/2014 13:13

I was brought up in Greece, lived there for years, everyone ate at lunch time generally at home. Eating at 9 or 10 at night definitely wasn't my experience unless it was an evening out.

For me out makes a big difference when I eat, got starters I wouldn't be able to sleep if I ate late at night.

But yes, eat less move more.

prawnypoos · 20/05/2014 13:24

Completely true! That's what it all boils down to.

I look back and I was eating so much shit surprised I'm not about 20 stone but then I'm quite active anyway.

OP posts:
prawnypoos · 20/05/2014 13:27

Omg rough typing freelee the banana girl is so annoying!! Uggghhhh I love fruit but I just couldn't eat as much as she does. Surely that's not good!?

OP posts:
ppeatfruit · 20/05/2014 13:27

specialsubject DH is really ILL if he eats wholemeal wheat bread, we're all different and I just get exhausted if I eat wheat. I eat good rye and Kamut bread though.

roughtyping · 21/05/2014 07:13

prawny goodness only knows. It's surely not healthy to be so obsessed by it though. Too much of a good thing?! Plus re the money aspect of it, one of the ways to 'afford' her lifestyle is she recommends people give up health insurance in America as 'they will be so healthy' Shock

ppeatfruit · 21/05/2014 08:18

I've never heard of the banana girl but my exdil is a raw food freak and although gorillas exist on just fruit and leaves and a few insects it iS odd to think that we'd all be completely healthy if we just ate fruit because not all fruit agrees everyone e.g. bananas give me bellyache!

prawnypoos · 21/05/2014 16:02

My mum finds that fruit (esp tomatoes, citrus fruits etc) make her skin flare up and affect her joints, she's always had bad joints though since being a kid. She's had 1 knee replacement and 1 hip replacement and she's only 47. Poor old girl lol.

She's very slim though and that will help her joints a lot. I'm just thinking if I inherit her dodgy joints thn all of this extra weight isn't doing me any good whatsoever.

I've only eaten a banana today (not good) going to get myself some tea now :)
