Atkins/Low Carb/High Protein - Anyone doing it?

Lost 2st on Atkins but have since veered more to GL type diets. Unfortuntely don't seem to be able to stick to them like I could with Atkins.Still want to lose 3 stone (have put back on nearly a stone of the weight I lost) and am debating whether to go back on Atkins. Any opinions welcomed

dinny, well personally when I'm in ketosis my appetitie almost disappears and I ahve no cravings.I shouldn't have had half a bottle of wine .
Have bought the gum and the cake is safely still in the fridge

brimfull · 29/09/2006 22:48

sorry forgot to answer your question.I use ketostix that I bought on ebay.It takes a few days to get into ketosis, but you must remember to keep drinking lots....water not wine,as dehydration causes you to go into ketosis aswell I think.

MoonFrog · 30/09/2006 14:45

Joelallie, a 28" waist on somebody of 5'11" seems tiny...... surely you can't still have any/much weight to lose ?
Oh and if anyone tries soya milk, check the carb count..... I've just checked a different make - Granose organic has 2.1g per 100ml as opposed to 0.2g per 100ml for Alpro.
Just been to the library and have got 8 books on low carb and GI so will do some serious reading this weekend as have completely fallen off the wagon again Went shopping without eating breakfast and was ambushed by the toffee and pecan pastries........

Hello low-carb people - I hope you don't mind me joining in, but I've been lurking and the thread has inspired me to stop mucking about and get back on Atkins. I lost a couple of stone two years ago and I really like that way of eating once you get used to thinking a bit differently, especially about breakfast and lunch. I was just wondering whether anyone knew if anywhere was still stocking frozen blueberries as I have become a bit addicted to them for breakfast and the fresh ones are so expensive. The local Tescos has stopped and now so has Waitrose it seems. Getting a bit desperate as I'm not so keen on the "black forest" and "summer fruit" mixtures they all seem to sell now.

MoonFrog · 30/09/2006 20:43

Welcome Crotchety
Sorry, I've never seen frozen blueberries on their own - I don't like the summer fruit mixtures either. Tesco have frozen raspberries on offer at moment (400g for 99p), I bought two tubs yesterday.

Crotchety · 30/09/2006 22:06

Thanks Moondog! Raspberries it is then!

Crotchety · 30/09/2006 22:08

Oops sorry I mean MoonFROG...Gaah... Have probably fallen off wagon by drinking haf a bottle of white just now...

MoonFrog · 30/09/2006 22:12

Oops. Think that's the problem with my name. When I changed it to MoonFrog I didn't realise that there was a Moondog who has been here a lot longer than me. Don't want to step on Moondog's toes (paws ) so maybe another change is in order.
What's the protocol ? I've not been mn'ing for that long... is it frowned upon to keep changing your name ?

chubbleigh · 30/09/2006 22:21

Well girls, I am back on it tomorrow, had people staying and have eaten too much in the last couple of weeks. I am going to see if I can shift a few pounds before my birthday. I have to wait for the mood to come over me and it finally has.

Crotchety · 30/09/2006 22:42

Oh Moonfrog don't change your name because I stupidly got it wrong! I'm new as well so don't know about the name-changing etiquette - seems to be quite a lot of it though!

brimfull · 30/09/2006 22:52

So I take it these berries are low carb then?

Crotchety · 01/10/2006 08:38

ggirl, yes berries are relatively low carb for fruit, so strawberries and cream turns out to be a Good Thing. Or any other berries really I think- haven't got the numbers to hand at the moment.

joelallie · 02/10/2006 10:12

Too much wine this weekend - it was totally manic and there were loads of people here which is my excuse. Had naan bread on Saturday night (only about a quarter of one) and then temptation got too much for me and I finished off the last little bit of a chocolate cake I made for the kids. But....I'm just putting it behind me (trying to) and drinking more water. Stupid thing is that usually I find it soooo easy but there are always those times when temptation is too strong.

moonfrog - I don't have lots to lose I suppose but I'm trying to get down to a comfortable size 12 and stay there!!! I am more or less there but the last few inches will be hard. Problem is that now that I recognise my weaknesses I can't let myself go back to my old way of eating. Wish I could

Welcome Chubleigh and Crochety! I don't like the frozen mixtures either - they seem to have sneaked cherries into them which are a definite no-no a d I don't like them much anyway. Luckily mum and dad have lots of home-grown berries which they freeze so they give me a bag everynow and again otherwise I wouldn't have them - too expensive!! Also we have lots of strawberry growers round here. But no good now. BTW blackberries are excellent for lc diets. And they're free - but more or less over for this year. Rhubarb is good - if you can't get it fresh, Morrisons sell it it tins with no syrup or juice - very low carb. You can have it warmed through with a little sweetener and cream, or make it into a pud with some almond sponge. Very nice but occasionally only.

VelvetMoonFrog · 03/10/2006 07:05

Joelallie, the last few inches/pounds are a bugger. Sounds like you're on track though

Right. As of yesterday I'm back on track.
Weigh in Mon was 12st 10lbs.
I'm eating low GL with an emphasis on 10 fruit and veg per day (to help with the you know what problem ) and trying to keep as low carb as I can. Yesterday had fruit for breakfast. Homemade veg soup for lunch, then small portion lamb pasta bake (wholewheat pasta) with shed loads cauli, cabbage and broccloi, and lots of water.
Emotional, hope you're feeling a bit better. How have you done this week?
x

VelvetMoonFrog · 03/10/2006 07:09

ps. the 'broccloi' was a typo, I'm not really from Birmingham

joelallie · 03/10/2006 16:36

Why oh why does my life keep sabotaging my diet??? Being a good mummy I decided to start making bread again for my kids's sake. Halo all aglow! But I'd forgotten how gorgeous it is.

Bugger.

VelvetMoonFrog · 03/10/2006 19:36

Joelallie, my breadmaking activities are on hold at the moment for the very same reason

My problem is that my green fingered dh has grown a bumper crop of bloody potatoes this year, not to mention all the other scrummy stuff like parsnips, broad beans etc..... all the sort of stuff I couldn't eat on low carb. That's partly why I've switched to GL at the moment

I was very naughty tonight after being so good all day.... I only went and had fish and chips didn't I

Bloody hell, its like a confessional in here!

Feeling marginally better. But while you're all confessing I may as well confess to eating some rice and naan bread last Friday whilst on a conference. Also drank best part of two bottles of white wine, topped off with a hot chocolate, and threw up for most of the night! Typical night out for a nurse I'd say. Ended up riding an ornamental elephant outside and indian restaurant with a napkin on my head - classy.

Anyway, weigh day tomorrow. Don't hold your breath, I'm not expecting any weight loss this week so I'll only be annoyed if I've put any on.

Congrats on your weight loss VelvetMoonFrog (Can't believe you've changed names again!)

xxx

MoonFrog · 04/10/2006 13:54

Afternoon.

Glad you're feeling a little better Emotional. What are the scales saying ?
Thankyou for the image - I can see you now, straddling an ornamental elephant rodeo stylee, with one arm in the air, yeeee ha !

By the way, I've not lost weight - my last posted weight was 12st 6lb on the 8 Sept, so I've gained. That's hardly suprising though as I fell off the wagon (actually I hurled myself) in grand style. Am feeling positive though and back in control. A grapefruit, yoghurt and seeds fo brekkie, Homemade veggie soup for lunch.

emotionalwreck · 04/10/2006 21:24

Congratulations on the weight gain MoonFrog! Er..... ahem, I mean well done on getting back on track.

You've had more name changes than P Diddy or whatever he's calling himslef these days!

Anyway scales say.....

I've lost a quarter of a pound! God I feel like that girl off the Royle family. Like I said yesterday its a bonus I've not put any on!

MoonFrog · 07/10/2006 19:57

It's gone a bit quiet on here hasn't it.

I'm concentrating on trying to eat as many fruits and veggies as poss at the moment in a healthy stylee, but as mentioned before we have a mountain of potatoes to be used........ I don't feel I can not eat them as dh put so much work in.......but it's not exactly helping with the weight

How's everyone else getting on with the low carbing ?

Emotional, a quarter of a pound is a quarter of a pound, and you are still moving in the right direction

emotionalwreck · 07/10/2006 20:45

You took the words out of my mouth. I was thinking that maybe the sudden cold weather (long overdue me thinks) has sent everyone over to the carbohydrate cupboard?

Must admit, I've been fantasising about stew and dumplings with mash and lovely thick gravy!

Have been reading about GL diet and have ordered the book - feeling really restricted with Atkins at the moment and given my history of PCOS it could be the right diet for me. I'm waiting for your weigh day with baited breath moonfrog, but if you've been hitting the potatoes maybe I should disregard the result! Keep me posted! I'm going to persevere with Atkins in the meantime.

Crotchety · 07/10/2006 20:59

I'm still persevering with Atkins as well but I probably need to do proper induction for a week rather than the vaguely remembered version I'm currently doing. Bit fed up that I can't get the low-carb rolos any more as they used to keep me on the straight and narrow when I wanted chocolate. Have also had a low-level chest infection for weeks which I can't shift (anti-biotics were no good) which isn't helping.

brimfull · 07/10/2006 23:44

Hi everyone, haven't posted for a few days but I'm following the clark plan diet and have lost 11lbs in 3 weeks.I'm so pleased as people are starting to notice now.
Wanted to ask about this net carb thing.I've seen atkins bars and similar woodie bars that say 3 grams of net carbs. Are the really ok to eat?

Still having bowel problems despite drinking loads but am taking the husk stuff ocassionally which helps.

Felt really great today as finally fitted into a pair of size 16 jeans
