What exercise if any can I do to guarantee to lose weight?

Please advise, I am struggling so so hard to lose weight. I diet so well all week then at the weekend I find it harder and enjoy having a nice meal, glass of wine as my weekend treat. I have been doing an exercise dvd every day for a month and that has done nothing for my weight whatsoever (but is probably toning me up all over).

I am desperate desperate to lose weight, it is taking over my mind and making me unhappy.

I am willing to try anything at all.

Swimming (hard and fast, not bobbing up and down doing a gentle breaststroke with dry face and hair) will really help to tone up and lose weight.

kohl · 05/04/2013 16:56

Hot/bikram yoga-the weight will not only come off, but you will be super toned. It is amazing.

LonelyLinda · 05/04/2013 17:02

Thank you for your responses, I can only swim breast stroke i'm afraid, have never mastered any other so perhaps that would not be enough or as good as front crawl?.

I will have a look to see if I can find some bikram classes locally, I hadn't thought of that!

Breast stroke is fine, but really go for it, face under with every stroke and go as fast as you can. Get your heart going and lose your breath, in other words.

LonelyLinda · 05/04/2013 17:16

Swimming will definitely be achieveable for me, I will be able to do 5 days a week.

Sadly I cannot find any Bikram yoga in my area anywhere.

running works for me

LonelyLinda · 05/04/2013 17:31

I might try running too, i'm just desperate I really am. There is a running club locally, i could join and it might spur me on to do it with others whilst building up my running.

i really like running - i really could not run round the block but now i like being outside, i like running with others (so i can talk...) and it lifts my mood, helps me sleep.

Our local council runs 0-5k beginner courses so maybe look out for something similar. It much easier running with others.

so do it because you might actually enjoy it not just to manage your weight

bakerbump · 05/04/2013 17:51

Maybe google ideas for, and thr benefits of interval training (exercising flat out followed by a short active recovery, then repeat).
One of the best ways to burn calories as it keeps the body guessing. If you went running at a steady pace, yes you would burn calories but your body would get used to the level of effort.
Instead, try sprinting for say 2mins, then walk for 30secs. Repeat!
This can be applied to any type of aerobic exercise, so whatever you find enjoyable would be best!

CHST · 05/04/2013 18:08

a good mixture of strength training and cardio.
It sounds like it is the diet letting you down rather than the exercise if I can be honest. What do you mean diet so well in the week?
Also a month is not very long, you need much longer to see noticable results IMO. What sort of exercise are you doing?

Machli · 05/04/2013 18:09

Running. Long distances, not especially fast. Guaranteed.

Barbie1 · 05/04/2013 18:18

Try the insanity DVDs, max cardio training and a mix of interval training. Very tough but brilliant results.

I lost 10kg by doing cardio and pilates 4x a week. My diet didn't really change much but the Pilates toned me and made me appear leaner while the cardio stripped the body fat.

Im now doing the insanity DVD to shift last of the weight.

CHST · 05/04/2013 18:40

Barbie1 I love Insanity! I am a big fan of Beachbody workouts

Barbie1 · 05/04/2013 18:43

I love to hate it Grin

I really want to attend a class and qualify to teach it, still a long way off but hopefully within the next few years Smile

IslaValargeone · 05/04/2013 18:44

Barbie, how long did it take you to start looking different?

cathpip · 05/04/2013 18:51

Running here or the good old exercise bike...

Barbie1 · 05/04/2013 18:57

I started mid October and by the time I flow home
For Christmas I was 10kg down.

My personal trainer said within weeks my posture had improved and the Pilates teacher agreed. Just by standing taller and squaring the shoulders made me look taller and leaner.

As my core got stronger the rest of the muscle groups seemed to follow.

I went from post baby 32 inch jeans to 29 inch jeans in weeks.

I could of done it so much faster but I'm a very fussy eater so my diet it's t all tht good Blush

I'm 9 stone now, I have maintained that for the last three months.

I however do want to strip some body fat and reduce my bmi so I'm back to my healthy (ish) eating and insanity 6x a week. I started again yesterday and have given myself until end of may to get to 8 and a half stone Smile

Calamansi · 05/04/2013 18:58

Insanity is amazing ! I've lost 15 pounds doing insanity and dieting over last 2 months but look like I've lost more as it really tones you to. I also saw results within 2 weeks and especially after 4 weeks. It is hard but worth persevering with, good luck :)

Barbie1 · 05/04/2013 18:58

Sorry for typos Blush I phone and rocking teething toddler is not a good combo!

Barbie1 · 05/04/2013 18:59

I feel an insanity support group coming on Wink

NorksAreMessy · 05/04/2013 19:00

Practice not opening the fridge.
Apparently 80% of weight loss is in the kitchen, only 20% is in the gym :)

IslaValargeone · 05/04/2013 19:01

Wow, that's great.
I may actually get off my butt and do something now that you have inspired me.

5eggstremelychocaletymadeggs · 05/04/2013 19:03

Where do you get yhese insanity dvds? I just googled but onlu got a box set for ££££

5eggstremelychocaletymadeggs · 05/04/2013 19:03

Have lost a stone doing couchto10k but want to lose the last half a stone.

Barbie1 · 05/04/2013 19:04

If you have an I phone you could always download an app called tabitha trainer. You basically have to push yourself for 30-60 seconds (depends on what you set it as) then rest for 15-30 seconds, and repeat.

You can run up and down the stairs, skip, jumping jacks...anything to get the heart going.

Mfp is also very good for diet control
