Anyone interested in joining WWB on a weight-loss support thread for the REAL heavyweights?

I can't take the credit for this as it's not all my idea ... but I think it might be a good one and wondered if anyone else with a LOT to lose would like to join with me and suejonez to shift some weight?

I'm not talking about being a size 14 and needing to lose a stone - I'm talking people who are size 22+, those who have a really serious amount of weight to shift. Skinny minnies need not apply Wink - I'm thinking that maybe we would have to be a minimum weight or size so that we know we're all in the same boat together, and we know that everyone on the thread understands how we feel and the problems that we face once we make the decision to lose weight. Perhaps people who need to lose at least 5 stone?

I weighed myself today and have scared myself with what the scales said, and so sue's email couldn't have come at a better time - but I am hopeless at dieting on my own, and thought that maybe the support of others who understand about having lots of weight to shift would be good. As suejonez said in her email to me, we know all about losing weight, we've probably done it a dozen times before, we know exactly what to do and how to do it. We don't need to be told what to eat or how to eat it, we just need the support of people in a similar position to give us the nudge that we need to get on with losing the weight. Standing in front of a WW leader is daunting, maybe owning up to your weight to me would be less intimidating (well, maybe not ... Grin). But at least you'll know that I have as much (and probably more) to shift.

If anyone's interested we could have a weekly weigh-in, whether we post our weight on the thread or just the weight loss would be something we could think about before we set up the thread. I would be happy to have people email me their starting weight and their loss, so we could have a weekly round-up of how we're doing. We could even do something similar to WeightWatchers - set interim targets, get a virtual gold star for every 7lb lost, you know the sort of thing.

Come on, I know there are a few of us very large women out there - shall we do something about it?

I have been staggering sensible and had a small bowl of cereal before leaving work - this is to stop me starving to death on the way home and so avoid having to buy emergency pasty, sausage roll, crisps, fruit pastilles (delete as appropriate according to mood).

Wish me luck - I'm leaving now...

suejonez · 08/05/2006 18:18

If anyone wants a communal weigh-in ever, I'm in London.

WigWamBam · 08/05/2006 18:19

Keep off the pasties, sue ... good luck Smile

About acceptance Smile

WigWamBam · 08/05/2006 20:05

I often find that these kind of shows are presented a bit like freak shows ... "look at the mad fat woman" kind of thing. Even if they try to present themselves as being done in an empathetic manner they're very often a thinly veiled opportunity to get a cheap laugh at someone else's expense.

They certainly make uncomfortable viewing.

I was thinking it was going to be accepting/supportive prog

I'm glad to see I'm in such good company on this thread, hooray! Thanks for that link to Weight Loss Resources, Serenity - I think I'll do the three-day trial (starting tomorrow, natch). I've been thinking I really need to keep a food diary (yawn) since I'm such a chaotic eater. Have also found a bottle of water to keep by my side at all times (double yawn, but I know it does me good). Thanks for starting the thread WWB!

RTKangaMummy · 08/05/2006 20:10

How many people have tried AQUA AEROBICS ?????

I would love to try it

How many cuddly people were there at the class?

WigWamBam · 08/05/2006 20:14

If I had the nerve to be seen in a swimsuit I'd like to try it too ... not a pretty sight though Grin

I think I will do a food diary too, I find it hard to keep track otherwise. I had a quick look at the one on the site Serenity posted too - looks very good. How much does it cost to keep up once the three day trial is finished?

I really like it RTKM, and it's full of good-sized people - you're under the water anyway so it's an obvious choice. Don't ask me why I don't go more often, cos it's fun. It helps if you find a nice warm pool with warm, clean, private changing rooms - not necessarily the case in local council-run pools near me. I think doctors recommend it for joints, etc, so you'd expect to have people doing it who are not exactly triathletes.

mazzystar · 08/05/2006 20:18

I went to an aqua aerobics class at our local pool. there were HUNDREDS of people there. I mean literally there were probably 80 or more people there all shapes and sizes of humanity. It was very jolly and untimidating but the water displacement caused by 80 people jumping and dunking at the same time caused a few mini-tsunamis. It was a really good workout, I felt like I'd excercised afterwards.

RTKangaMummy · 08/05/2006 20:20

I did it at centre parcs several years ago and thought it was deffo brill Smile

I couold do it at DH school pool but it is one big changing room so I change in toilets

But I would be going by myself

Is yours just women?

RTKangaMummy · 08/05/2006 20:21

WWB i know what you mean about swimsuit but the distance to walk between changing room and pool is very small

mazzystar · 08/05/2006 20:22

Ours was open to men and women but I think there was about one teenage boyfriend there dragged along under sufference. Rest all women. The class leader was quite a performer, belly dived into the middle at the end. Bit cringeable that bit.

aintmebabe · 08/05/2006 20:24

I think it would be a brave man to join in the classes I go to - it's also favoured by the occasional pregnant woman Grin People come to the poolside in big towels and then just get in the water, so there's not much exposure time. Anyway most of us are vaguely the same sort of size. What the hell.

WigWamBam · 08/05/2006 20:47

I couldn't ... the distance between the changing room and the pool is enormous, you have to walk along the entire length of the large pool to get to the small pool where the classes are held. Couldn't do it - not yet anyway. I'd need to shift a bit first.

Knock knock......

Hello everyone, can I join please?

I'm supposed to be moving house this weekend (if we complete) and then I am starting my diet/healthy eating plan.

I currently wear a size 28 and need to shift about 10st I think. I will let you know exact weights once we have moved and I am ready to start. I so glad that this thread has been started and to know that there are more big big ladies out there as I always sit here thinking I'm the only one.

heavenis · 08/05/2006 21:30

Aqua aerobics is good I did it for a while with my mother in law. I'm short sighted so I just take my glasses off from the changing room to the pool. (if I can't see nobody can see me) Grin Need to wear them when doing the class or else I wouldn't have a clue as to what was going on.
Just out of interest does anyone else float really well when the are in the water. I have a hard time not to float to the top. I blame my two bouyency aids. Wink

suejonez · 08/05/2006 23:15

I've been to aqua this evening. I would say about 15 in all about three my size (including my mum and I), also one or two very fit young wwomen some very old wrinkly women and a host in between.

Yes I feel awkward about my size but I still do it becasue its the only exercise apart from reasonaby gentle walking that my knees can cope with at the moment and my health is more important than my ego just now!

fastasleep · 08/05/2006 23:17

WWB just wanted to say, you are a beautiful person... just wanted you to know I think that xxx :)

best of luck - go girl!
