And another one about the role of ketogenic diets in dealing with cancer

This is a really interesting piece.

By "specific hunger" I thought she meant that you get hungry when it a meal time rather than being snacky. I didnt realise she meantthey were hungry all the time.

WillieWaggledagger · 14/03/2013 08:12

black i read it inthe same way - i.e. it's not a desperate blood sugar drop sort of hunger, it's a different sort of hunger. and i didn't interpret it as being all the time either

BlackAffronted · 14/03/2013 08:15

Biwiw, am I reading it right, thatthey had to stop teh study because the low-fat group were increasing their risks of disease?

teaandthorazine · 14/03/2013 08:43

There are a lot of people with their heads in the sand over on that GP thread! I do think GP can come across as a bit smug and preachy but ffs, what's wrong with trying not to feed your kids processed crap?

Fascinating article about cancer BIWI.

Felt very tired yesterday and wasn't concentrating too well at work. Can't wait for the low-carb energy to kick back in, as I know it does! Slept well, though, after weeks of not doing so; that's a bonus.

LittleFrieda · 14/03/2013 08:48

IN terms of grams of carbs, how many are each of you aiming to keep below?

Yama · 14/03/2013 08:53

Hi LittleFrieda - I don't have a number I aim to keep below. I just stick to the Bootcamp rules. Oh, and I drink wine and eat nuts. Also, I have recently reduced my dairy intake as I think too much dairy can be harmful.

LittleFrieda · 14/03/2013 08:59

Yama thanks. S0 you don't know how many carbs you need to keep below to carry on losing weight?

BIWI · 14/03/2013 09:03

It varies from person to person, LittleFrieda, which is why it's difficult to set a daily limit.

Certainly the idea behind Bootcamp is that there isn't any need to weigh/count - as it's supposed to be easy to follow.

That said, Dr Briffa would say that you need to keep to under 100g carbs per day. Being more realistic about weight loss as opposed to maintenance, I would think that you should aim for under 50g carbs per day.

But the key thing is that these carbs should be coming mainly from vegetables and salad as opposed to processed foods.

If you were to follow Atkins, then you start with 20g carbs per day on induction - so presumably a level low enough that anyone would lose weight, then after this you move on to ongoing weight loss (OWL), where you increase your carbs every day by 5g until you read the point where weight loss stops and you start to put weight on. Everyone has a different level of carbs that they can tolerate.

Thanks- Yama, I hope your dd feels better. My ds has now developed d&v :( he is mortified - nearly 6. Dd is still ok but she gets everything so waiting... It's so dull for her being in with us-playing hide and seek punctuated by screams of mummy, it's happened again...tonight's going to be a blast, I can just feel it:(

No breakfast as too much going on and didn't really feel like it. Lunch - bab:)

thenightsky · 14/03/2013 09:20

Well I'm in a Brighton b&b for 3 days. Just been down for breakfast. It's all carbs. Least of all evils seemed to be croissant with slabs of cold butter and the yoghurt section of a muller fruit corner which tasted suspiciously sweet. Tell me how it is please :-( I my just have to skip breakfast for the next 2 days. I feel horrendously bloated from that one croissant.

teaandthorazine · 14/03/2013 09:22

Hi LF. If I'm going for full-on weightloss/'deep' ketosis, then around 20g. But more generally, anything between 50-100g seems to work for me. Don't weigh anything though, it's just a general estimate.

BIWI can attest to the fact that I was never the world's strictest bootcamper Grin but I still lost a stone and a half drinking wine and eating yoghurt/80% choc! No wonder I love LC...

LittleFrieda · 14/03/2013 09:23

I had peanuts yesterday. A small handful. Then another. And another. Blush

BIWI · 14/03/2013 09:24

Ah.

littlemisstan hula hoop class sounds ace. I tried hula-ing once, DH told me I looked like I was trying to throw coins out of my pocket. I need to find something to help my withered and separated abs..

I'm still laughing at the thought of eating a show-leek Grin

B: Lidl yog and a handful of the baby's blueberries (semi-squished)
L: Mexican scrambled eggs
D: Hot and sour beef salad (although it feels too cold for a salad)

I'm due on and v grumpy. I've had to ask DH to hide the peanut butter already.

EwanHoozami · 14/03/2013 09:29

I've missed this whole BAB phenomenon - what is it?

BIWI · 14/03/2013 09:35

Big Ass Breakfast, Ewan. Some people have only just discovered the joys ... Wink

LittleFrieda · 14/03/2013 09:35

Thanks all. I know everyone is different, I was just looking for a range. I finished my fortnight of bootcamp on Mon and I'm wondering whether to up the carbs a bit or just to carry on below 20g.

prettybird · 14/03/2013 10:38

Did anyone see Dr Lustig on this monring's BBC Breakfast TV, talking about the dangers of sugar?

Doshusallie · 14/03/2013 10:48

made me laugh too Ewan. Grin Image of me dragging it in from the garden and wreslting it into a pan. I weighed my leeks, 200g each. So 6g I guess..

Breaking news - I have introduced blueberries to my greek yog of a morning. Will weigh tomorrow and see if it has made a difference.

IShallWearMidnight · 14/03/2013 10:49

when I did Atkins some years back, I lost weight on 40g a day. More than 60g, then I gained. But I have PCOS which makes me more sensitive to carbs anyway.

I suppose the only way to work it out, is to do the Atkins "adding 5g at a time and see what happens" thing.

Have been having a few wobbles this week, but am keeping up with the water (2 and a half 750ml bottles so far today) and a fab late BAB of 2 sausages, 2 poached eggs, and 2 rashers bacon (which needed to be used up), so I won't need to eat till this evening.

Tomorrow is a dinner out though, so will have to do the best I can (it's a set menu formal thing, so no wriggle room, but will have a late lunch and just pick at the meal).

Yama · 14/03/2013 10:58

No PrettyBird but I heard him on Radio 4 the other day. The interviewer was all incredulous, saying things like "Are you saying fat is good?" Shock

He was great and remained calm. I didn't get to hear all of it due to the kids but the general gist was that sugar is evil.

WillieWaggledagger · 14/03/2013 11:17

it's here from about 26 minutes in

WillieWaggledagger · 14/03/2013 11:34

i don't think carolyn quinn was too combative in her interviewing actually, just asking the questions that those who don't subscribe to low-carb eating always have

i think he could have been stronger about advocating fat, actually! but it was good that he was saying 'eat real food', as i find that people who don't agree with low-carbing think you're eating lots of processed meat, eggs and cream and nothing else, and it's much much more than that!

i've added the yudkin and lustig books to the resources page too (I've just ordered them both from the library!)

WillieWaggledagger · 14/03/2013 11:49

here is an editorial by Robert Lustig which briefly discusses leptin resistance (not sure whether it is freely available as I get access through work)
