Week 9 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - Nearly there ...

BIWI · 04/03/2013 07:49

So we enter the last two weeks of Bootcamp. Still time to drop another 2-4lbs!

Here's the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness for you to come and confess all.

Remember, at the bottom of the spreadsheet is a tab for Ubercamp, if you fancy three strict days.

Good luck!

I'm going to go back to something I used to do for work. I'd buy some nice chicken breasts and marinate them. I'd chop the meat up and put it into bags with Thai flavours or garlic and lemon, then bung them in the freezer, then take them out as needed and roast them. Each bag would be good for two lunches and I'd just chuck it into some salad. I might have a go at that today (DH in Germany for meeting so I need to find something fun to do Hmm

BIWI · 07/03/2013 09:46

Well, it wouldn't have made any difference, Quick, because he is waiting for me.

Ah Johnny Depp...used to have a picture of him laminated onto the cover of one of my dreariest sixth form text books... I am just waiting for the kids to get into Pirates of the Caribbean.

Mushrooms are also good with scrambled egg (you can even microwave them if you're feeling lazy rushed). Also any kind of eggs are good with leftover root vegetable dauphinois/tartiflette.

Scrambled eggs with smoked salmon for me this morning.

Ditto slummy - I get pleased when DS is asked, as normally he isn't, but in reality it is always a nightmare. Can imagine that if they are at all sensory seeking (mine is) roller skating would go down well!

BlackAffronted · 07/03/2013 11:13

Mmmm..... Johnny Depp .....

Timid (aka my evil twin) was it you who mentioned the Big Ass Breakfast? Well, whoever it was, I took that advice today! Had 3 eggs, 2 bacon & 2 spoons Greek Yog for breakfast at 7am and I am obviously still stuffed. Id usually have a snack about now, but I feel fine and know I can last till my lunch at 1/2pm.

Iamaslummymummy · 07/03/2013 12:10

I too had a big ass breakfast. 3 bacon, 2 eggs and mushrooms in butter. Yum!

BlackAffronted · 07/03/2013 12:35

Just added some photos to the Food Porn thread here Hope some more of you can add some pics! I love food porn Grin

JakeBullet · 07/03/2013 12:39

Lunch provided at my assessment day.....sandwiches, quiche, sausage rolls, Pringles and fruit.

Bought my own lunch thankfully but confessing to three (1,2, 3) Pringles. I wonder what the carb count is per Pringle Grin .

littlermissstan · 07/03/2013 13:08

I think there's definitely something in the Big Ass Breakfast Theory - I sadly think my beloved Lidl yogurt isn't quite enough at the moment. Just had a delicious lunch of pate spread on cucumber slices with a green and avocado salad with home made dressing, yum.

Jake only three Pringles is a heroic effort :) And Black I keep thinking half way through a meal that I should have taken a picture of it, I will try harder!

BlackAffronted · 07/03/2013 13:12

Yes, remember to take photos :D

MaryBeardfanclub · 07/03/2013 13:33

the processed meat advice:

Should we cut down or cut out?

Definitely cut down, ideally including leaner cuts of meat, and more pulses and vegetables in your family's diet.

"My recommendation is to limit the [total] amount of meat to about 300g to 600g a week," says lead researcher Sabine Rohrnman. "I'd say it's fine to eat bacon and sausages, but not in high amounts and not every day."

I am going to investigate further because the lead researcher is quoted as saying limit ALL meat even although this study is not looking at ALL meat (I dont know why she would extend the study results to all meat, this is not warrented and not scientific).

2ndly this kind of study is called an epidemiological study - ie looks at patterns and then infers a link - this kind of study is used by the media to say well X causes Y but this is not science, it's bunkum

will report back...

colette · 07/03/2013 13:48

blackaffronted you are the queen of food porn! love the pictures.
Think I have lost a 1lb- my scales are difficult to read so I am just going with that and if I sts next week will be fine with that.

WillieWaggledagger · 07/03/2013 13:48

i tend to try to keep down the amount of processed meat i have - i limit bacon to weekend breakfasts, I don't like sausages, and very occasionally i get gammon or a ham joint, or have antipasti type meats at a restaurant. this is more to do with avoiding artificial ingredients than anything else

they do talk about other risk factors that tend to go alongside a diet high in processed meat (smoking, obesity), but i would venture that these could well be people who eat a high-carb diet as well as one high in processed meats

halfthesize · 07/03/2013 14:49

Johnny Depp, now thats yummy Grin

WillieWaggledagger · 07/03/2013 14:52

AND low carb Grin

halfthesize · 07/03/2013 15:22

you read my mind WillieGrin

JakeBullet · 07/03/2013 16:43

Ah.....just spoken with my GP, told her I was now doing LCHF and she said........"that's fine, just watch the protein" Grin.

Thank goodness for enlightened GPs .

Dinner tonight is chicken thighs x2 with skin on, celeriac mash, mushrooms done in butter and rocket salad with mayo.

What ratios should we be aiming for BIWI?

EMUZ · 07/03/2013 16:59

This WOE has stabilised my blood sugars. I have some bizarre thing where they drop low v quick (not diabetic) and I've never had a blood sugar reading over 5
Previously I had one day eaten breakfast at 7am, then eaten (crap) again at 9.30am. By 10am my sugars were below 2 and I passed out at work Blush
Had to go to hospital as despite gel and mars bars my sugars wouldn't come up
Today (late shift last night) I've had scrambled eggs with butter and bacon and still no hunger and no shakes

Lavenderhoney · 07/03/2013 17:14

Johnny Depp:) I dream of bumping into him at airports as I think that is the only place our paths might cross. Sadly I think he will cast one horrified glance at me travelling alone with 2 small and overexcited dc and run for the first class lounge:)

I have been keeping at it, and I have been having the bab nearly every morning since the start of this woe- it stops me snacking, I don't need more than a small lunch and I have a small but tasty dinner:)

I have had some chocolate tonight but dd is better and has to be bribed with a small square of very good chocolate to have her medicine and she insisted I share with her:) first bit since 7 jan. it was lovely...

BIWI · 07/03/2013 17:31

Jake - I wouldn't worry too much about precise ratios - that will send you doolally! And the whole idea of Bootcamp is that you don't have to weigh/count anything.

As long as you are eating fat:protein:carbohydrate, then that is all that matters (And, obviously, that the amount of carbs isn't hooooge!)

EMUZ - I'm glad to hear it!

MaryBeard - it's really irritating in studies when they lump processed meats in with fresh/unprocessed meats! But, honestly, how can something that we have been eating since time immemorial be that bad for us? It makes logical sense that meats (and fish) that have been stuffed with all manner of flavourings and preservatives are not going to be so good for us.

spilttheteaagain · 07/03/2013 18:48

Blimey jake well done on three pringles, that is more hardcore than none! I can have none. Or I can have half the tube. Stopping at three is a feat impossible.

I made the slow cooker tikka masala from the recipe thread for dinner, it was really good. Made with sag turnip Grin by using this recipe and subbing spuds for turnips, and a courgette curry side dish which were both also very yum. Obv used less onion than instructed.

It was made a more catastrophic evening by me being in a flap trying to cook 3 new recipes simultaneously and knocked the pan of courgette curry off the hob. Across my shoes, jeans, washing machine, dishwasher, floor, cupboards.... Did a quick sod it and scoop back in the pan and we ate it anyway but it was one hell of a clear up!

Choos I love the idea of leftover tartiflette fried up with eggs. But there will never be any leftover tartiflette here it was too damn tasty and we are pigs!

Quick it's a shame processed meat isn't so good for you, as I love love love the smokey taste. At least with bacon, chorizo etc they are such good flavours you only need a little to flavour a dish, or a more boring mild meat like chicken.

Something else I am grateful to Bootcamp for...
My DD now loves broccoli Smile I think the secret is slathering it in melted butter and salt and pepper. She was like a little hoover pig snaffling it all off of my plate (I made some as a mid afternoon snack). I pretended I wanted it all, but i was genuinely thrilled that she was eating it so happily and I didn't have to mush it into her dinner. Thanks

BIWI · 07/03/2013 19:27

What really irritates me is that despite saying 'processed meat is bad for you' (which I can understand might be true), no-one actually seems to have any idea why.

So far today, it has been suggested that:

  • it's because it's wrapped in plastic
  • it contains too much salt
  • it contains too much saturated fat

Nothing to do with the artificial ingredients, then?

spilttheteaagain · 07/03/2013 19:30

Oh by the way I solved the cold butter problem in the end. The answer is to halve a radish and put a slice of butter on each half, dip them in some salt and eat. Oh yes!

spilttheteaagain · 07/03/2013 20:22

I quite fancy making a veggie lasagne of sorts. I have never made a non meat lasagne before at all, so doing so sans pasta is an extra challenge. Does anyone have a recipe?

BlackAffronted · 07/03/2013 20:38

my big ass breakfast really worked! no snacks at all today Smile Smile thank you for that advice, whoever it was. I did a bit of googling about it, and have been reading about leptin resetting, so I think I'm going to keep at it.

b - 2 bacon, 3 eggs, 2 spoons greek yog

l- 2 chicken thighs with crispy skin, 3 asparagus spears, 4 button mushrooms, splash of cream

d - big piece of crackling, tablespoon pulled pork, tablespoon swede dauphinois and a tablespoon of buttered leeks. square of dark choc.

all that really filled me up, I'd usually eat 2 - 3 times that amount at dinner! feeling fab.

Ruprekt · 07/03/2013 21:07

B bacon, 2 eggs and celeriac mash

L meatballs and celeriac mash (love the stuff!Smile)

D HM coleslaw, broccoli with anchovies, ham

S 2 mini pepperami, babybel, cucumber and a mushroom

Water.
2 teas
Peppermint tea

GrinGrin

Weighing tomorrow.
