Week 7 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - Where We Get Tough!

BIWI · 18/02/2013 08:30

Morning campers

Here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

This week sees the start of Ubercamp. This is entirely optional, by the way!

The idea is that we have three very strict days, keeping our carbs under 20g each day and consuming no dairy.

If you want to take part, I have put together three days' worth of meals as a guide - one which includes eggs and one which is an egg-free plan for those of you who don't like eggs. I'll also do one today which is purely fish-based.

As well as the meal plans, I've also written shopping lists and some recipes, where necessary, and the lovely Willie has put these on the spreadsheet - just look at the tabs at the bottom.

Belated happy birthday wishes for Blackaffrontedand timidviper
Hope you are not having lots of lovely treats

catinboots · 24/02/2013 06:36

Of course it was only one glass

That's why I'm awake at 6 with a stinking headache and my tongue stuck to the roof of my mouth.

Low carb hangovers are baaaaaad. So not worth it.

Hi ladies, may I join the thread? I've been reading since the 2nd thread and finally caught up to date - I've found this thread a great resource for meal ideas - and to be honest sometimes I've been wavering about this woe as it's so "weird" and dont always feel comfortable at work with my lc lunches and snacks and you have made me reconfirm that this is woe is the right thing to do health wise nevermind anything else. My story is that I started in April last year to lose 5lb following dc2 and lost 12 lb , got cocky around xmas and starting eating sausage rolls & danish pastries from shop near work in preference to cooking something I could take to work (I really dont know what I was thinking) and put on 7lb in a week and am in a steady state since then.

So whilst I'm not really looking to lose weight, I am looking to stay constant in this woe and that is not always easy simply due to the social pressures iykwim and this thread is an inspiration - I try to remind my self of the other benefits...I dont feel hungry all the time, not obessed with the next meal/what am I allowed next/I have energy for the 1st time in about 25 years, I dont feel cold all the time, I dont get furry teeth, no stomach pains so lots of good things.

It's lovely to find such a supportive and informative thread on mn

Welcome Mary Smile

JakeBullet · 24/02/2013 08:22

Okay it's my confession time.....

I am starting properly tomorrow but had an intro day yesterday which went really well.....until I went to bed. Then I was edgy and .....I don't know......felt weird. At Midnight I cracked and came downstairs...ate a bag of crisps and some chocolate....not loads but felt "better" afterwards.

Am told this "edgy" feeling was "carb flu"and only lasts a day or two so I know that I will need to persevere. Is there anything which helps it.......Inknow John Briffa talks of a powder which you add to water.....I'll look it up. But anything else?

Btw.....there are no more crisps in the house and I won't be buying any more either.

EwanHoozami · 24/02/2013 08:48

Jake - sounds like you had your one-last-norty-fling with the carbs Grin I found taking a chromium supplement quite helpful in the first month as it helps regulate blood sugar. Some multivits have it in already.

spilt those are superb posts about lowering costs for this WOE Thanks I've discovered all sorts of interesting cuts of meat while on the hunt for cheapness. Beef shin and venison liver have been particular favourites. I've also become adept at hovering around the reduced shelf and buying in bulk and freezing. Corned beef hash and dishes with tinned sardines or mackerel are good cheap standbys.

but most of all I've realised that me and my family deserve to eat really good food and that a few extra ££'s on really good grub here and there are an investment in our health.

Welcome Mary :)

Heeellllooooo!

Before I start catching up on this thread, a little something to share if I may...

It is a birthday weekend chez kitchenfairy, DH and I are a day apart and I've had to take a massively different approach this year so as not to be totally derailed. No cake... No croissants for DH... no wine ok just a bottle and a glass or two of prosecco but absolutely zero deprivation Grin...I've really been dreading this birthday and not wanted to do any celebrating or anything, but my lovely DS1 woke me with a coffee and cream... And a big bunch of roses that he arranged for me along with various foliage snipped from the garden... Honestly he is only just 10 and I am really touched. He said he thought I would like it more than cake... and he was absolutely right!

Happy Sunday ladies, will check in again with you all later when I've read through the week's stories.

JakeBullet · 24/02/2013 09:19

Happy Birthday kitchenfairy and what a lovely gift from your DS. Have a lovely day xx

Doshusallie · 24/02/2013 09:29

Happy birthday kitchen, and I only hope my sons are as lovely as you when they are ten. How thoughtful.

Pork belly is a great cheap lc meat option, and delish deliCIOUS.

spilttheteaagain · 24/02/2013 09:45

jake the carb withdrawal can be very powerful. I knew I wasn;t hungry as had eaten piles of food, but I felt so weak and like my blood sugar was going through the floor, (which is prob was!) felt nauseous and achy and really desperate for sugar. Actually it came in waves, and if I got through an hour the feelings susbsided for a bit. I found a snack of cheese very helpful when feeling like this.

The rule in the early days when coming off carbs is to just eat if you need to, don't worry about eating lots/snacking etc, just eat, but make sure it's low carb.

Salty food helps. Some blogs recommend drinking bouillion or similar. I just ate cheese!
Drink lots. Eat more fat. You are telling your body it needs to make a switch from running on sugar to running on fat. It needs to run out of easily accessible sugar in your bloodstream and realise there is lots of fat available and start using that.

Aaw kitchenfairy how sweet of your DS! Happy birthday.

Thanks ewan Smile I am also a veteran of the reduced counter. From time to time we do staggeringly well at the fish counter at sainsburys at the end of the day. 4 smoked mackerel fillets for 60p anyone?? 2 trout fillets for 45p? Yes please!

I have tinned sardines, what do you do with them? I used to have them on toast or with cous cous...

BIWI · 24/02/2013 09:54

Happy birthday, thekitchenfairy! How lovely of your DS.

Jake - spilttheteaagain is absolutely spot on. Drink plenty of water, eat lots of fat and make sure you are getting enough sodium, potassium and magnesium. So spinach, avocado and spinach - as well as salt in your cooking and on your food.

Happy birthday kitchen!

On day 3 of "no diary but not uber bootcamp". I've also been trying out sugar free sweets instead of magnesium for my chronic medication induced constipation. Much more effective and more tasty!

Yesterday
B 2 h/b eggs, pate, rocket and Mayo
L bbq ribs, coleslaw and salad at a pub. Didn't enjoy this meal. To expensive and bland
D gammon steak, l/c sausage, fried egg and mushrooms all grief in butter

Today
B as yesterday
L tuna salad
D chilli con Carne with no beans, slim rice which may be horrid and green beans with chorizo.

Going to hopefully try some geo caching out with the dog.

Iamaslummymummy · 24/02/2013 09:58

Fried in butter not grief in butterGrin

BIWI · 24/02/2013 10:18

"spinach, avocado and salmon" was what I meant to say! Although you can double up on the spinach if you like.

Aww thanks for birthday wishes all, DS is a very emotional hormonal mix of rage and tears, he goads and fights his younger brother and his favourite mode of communication is harrumphing, grumbling or just good old shouting... But today he is lovely. Quite lovely. I don't expect this to continue long into the day but hoping a walk on the beach will keep us all feeling relaxed for a little while longer Smile

What a great week on this thread... So much inspiration, I love it when it gets all evangelical! Welcome jake and mary you have come to a wonderful place indeed. Good luck with your journey.

Quick Q BIWI ... I think there has been a bit of away-from-home-half-term carb creep for me. I want to uber camp next week but worried about the no snacks rule... What do you advise?

JustasmallGless · 24/02/2013 10:58

Happy birthday thekitchenfairy- what a lovely thought from your DS. A perfect birthday present! Enjoy the rest of your day

NoveltySlippers · 24/02/2013 11:15

Happy Birthday kitchenfairy!

Welcome spilt, jake and mary.

I've been a bit quiet on the thread this week as not been feeling too good. Just a cold, sore throat etc, but it takes it out of you. Trying to perk up now and currently on sofa with hot water bottle and cup of tea. Happy Sunday everyone.

FurryDogMother · 24/02/2013 11:16

To satisfy a craving for cold butter - try halving a hardboiled egg, spreading butter on it, then dipping it into grated Parmesan. Works for me!

spilttheteaagain · 24/02/2013 11:30

Arf.

I've just been experimenting in the kitchen and make 2 oopsie roll things as they sounded intriguing. They are shit. But apparently the cat thinks not....
I left the kitchen to go and do half an hour in the garden and came back to find they've vanished without a crumb Grin

spilttheteaagain · 24/02/2013 11:30
  • made not make

Argh my typing gets worse by the day!

MrsHerculePoirot · 24/02/2013 11:38

Happy birthday kitchenfairy your DS sounds lovely. Hope my DD is as thoughtful when she gets to that age.

Happy birthday weekends blackaffronted and timidviper.

NoveltySlippers · 24/02/2013 11:46

Thanks MrsHP, glad you're perking up too.

I've been drinking quite a few Lemsips this week and am too scared to see how much sugar is in them!

Happy bday weekends to black and timid too - sorry I missed those!

IShallWearMidnight · 24/02/2013 12:41

[pokes head in]

hello, I may be joining you once I get my head round ditching the sugar/bread thing I've got going on atm. I did Atkins very successfully a few years back, as well as Cambridge, as well as Celebrity Slim, as well as Slim and Save (anyone spot the pattern going on here Wink), where I lose weight brilliantly, then got bored, start eating chocolate and crisps again, and put it all back on again. But at 40+ my body isn't coping as well with the on and off stuff, and I'm getting worried about type 2 diabetes...

So I know the basics of low carbing, but get fed up far too easily, so some general nagging and different ideas of stuff to eat will help me. My biggest issue (other than gettign started, and carrying on for more than a month Wink) is that I don't eat fish, so that rules out a lot of the cheaper lunch-type meals, as I can't usually be faffed with actually cooking three times a day (breakfasts will be egg based), and there's only so many times you can eat ham and salad, or chicken and salad. So I'm scouring threads and links for interesting lunch things.

So I'm not starting just yet, but dipping my toe in the water a bit. But Shock I've just seen that at my current weight I need to drink 3.5 litres of water a day, so getting up to that level will take a bit of perseverance!

ChoosandChipsandSealingWax · 24/02/2013 13:10

Hello all - have had a lovely holiday and just spent half the morning lazily drinking coffee and cream and now fennel tea with coconut oil and catching up with the threads whilst periodically shovelling endless laundry into the maw of the washing machine.

Welcomes to mary spilt and jake - hope you are not suffering too badly from carb flu - I found I had a dodgy tummy to start with too - but it settles down, just stick with it and particularly drink lots of water.

Happy birthdays to black timid and kitchen Thanks - hope you are having a spoiling time and enjoying furry's treat not cheat philosophy. i loved that. Definitely find it helps for me.

A huge well done to thehumancatapult - what an inspirational story.

And skandi hope you've recovered from your parents' visit - can't believe you've had to do that on top of all the house decorating and no sleep - hope you are surviving OK.

And last but not least, a huge thank you again to BIWI for the WOE - I was hoping to STS on holiday (because, like Gless, although I stick to the WOE with food fine, I have trouble resisting the wine, and on holiday decided just to drink what I wanted but other than that stick with the WOE), but seem to have lost nearly three pounds! Grin DH cannot believe after dark mutterings of "what diet?" all week as I hoovered down the cheese. And (like lavenderbriggs - well done! Glad the pain has settled down too) it's a psychologically-boosting drop to below the nine and a half stone mark for the first time since DD eight years ago. Still can't believe it - I really don't deserve it as drank way too much and also had milk in tea/coffee and a bit carbier veg than usual eg french beans.

I was worried about getting enough low carb supplies out there (small mountain village just with tiny food shop) so my packing also included: celeriac, cauliflower, swede, turnips, savoy cabbage, courgettes, Total, olives, pork scratchings, babybel... Blush And sneaked cauliflower and button mushrooms into the fondue restaurant so that I could enjoy the fondu without worrying about the baguette. And I resisted croissant and baguette all week too. I am feeling very smug (well, about that bit, if not the wine).

My favourite new meals/recipes away were:

  • Mountain cauliflower cheese: no oven in our apartment, so boiled cauliflower and then fried over high heat to brown a bit, then stirred in cubes of reblochon until they melted and then some cream. It was really delishcious.
  • Low carb tartiflette: boiled swede, turnip and celeriac slices almost until done, then fried in generous amounts of butter with some onion and garlic (would have done leek but forgot to pack), then again stirred in some reblochon, and had a mound of savoy cabbage on the side. And had the leftovers for breakfast with fried eggs, mmm.
  • Gin and slimline tonics with saucisson and olives
  • Smoked mountain hams/speck with fried eggs and leftover celeriac chips for breakfast
  • Seared scallops with a splash of wine to deglaze the pan, then some pesto and cream to make a sauce, with celeriac chips and grated courgette sautéed in butter

I love this WOE! Thanks BIWI Thanks
