Week 7 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - Where We Get Tough!

Morning campers

Here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

This week sees the start of Ubercamp. This is entirely optional, by the way!

The idea is that we have three very strict days, keeping our carbs under 20g each day and consuming no dairy.

If you want to take part, I have put together three days' worth of meals as a guide - one which includes eggs and one which is an egg-free plan for those of you who don't like eggs. I'll also do one today which is purely fish-based.

As well as the meal plans, I've also written shopping lists and some recipes, where necessary, and the lovely Willie has put these on the spreadsheet - just look at the tabs at the bottom.

Not hungry today.

Bowl of celeriac and swede soup with parmesan.

Mini pack pork scratchings.

Burger with large mushroom and swede chips. Cabbage.

Water and peppermint tea.

(I got hungrier this eve hence the burger!)

Lavender that's great well done:)

Dh took me and the dc out for lunch yesterday. The chef however was a friend of dh and a very very fabulous chef and even though dh said "she doesn't eat carbs" I said " gosh no of course I will" as I knew it would be amazing and I wanted to experience his cooking to the full:). And it was amazing too:) So I had some carbs but it was actually quite carb free really. And wine. A couple of glasses of wine.

The dc ate the puddings - my favourite chocolate fondant ( one spoon for me) and a tiramisu which I only smelt:)

I am actually writing as though I am talking faster and faster in an attempt not to get chased with Biwi and her big stick- sense the stick is being twirled..

Very light supper of cheese and cucumber sticks, plenty of water.

Argh, no milk in the house so I can't have a cup of tea. Getting a headache. Would be nice to be free from the shackles of caffeine addiction but as vices go, 3 cups of tea a day is fairly tame.

As for kids and carbs, we are gradually reducing the crap. So, reducing amounts of pasta, bread, cereals etc and replacing it with fat. Our eldest is a meat fiend so happily tucked in to bacon and a boiled egg this morning. Our youngest had 2 little pots of fromage frais and some blueberries.

They have only ever drunk water or milk, mainly choosing water. We have always been strict about sugary crap. I am a figure of ridicule at work as, at home, my dc are denied regular sweets/crisps/biscuits/juice. Can't say they have ever moaned about this and eldest is 7. They are free to eat crap at parties and other people's houses - I'm not an ogre. Grin

Yama your approach to what your children eat sounds sensible. My son is a carb king so am going to swap him over gradually.

I plan to start low Carbing properly on Monday but have started today in a relaxed way. Had Total yoghurt with a splash of cream this morning at about 7.30am. It's two hours in and I am not hungry.

We have fish for dinner as DS stopped by the fish counter and begged for a sea bass which was reduced. I am having Rainbow Trout and we will have lots of veggies and garlic in there. Have a nice Jamie Oliver recipe for fish with a garlic and cream sauce.....just need some mushrooms to add to it.

Am drinking the Robinsons "No Added Sugar" orange cordial....checked the carbs and they are 0.5 per 100ml of concentrate so very low. Obviously there is sweetner in there but am reading lots and gather the jury is still out about insulin response with sweetner.......unless anyone here knows differently of course.[smie]

Helloooo campers

Interesting points about DCs and low-carb. A friend of mine has an overweight 8yo DS and has been thinking of upping the fat / protein and losing the carbs (especially sugar). The problem with applying this to kids is that we know that this WOE isn't very forgiving, but an 8yo at a birthday party is not going to have the same self-control when faced with a brown buffet. So she's worried that she'll be merrily frying pork chops and green veg in butter for him and he'll undo all the good work when she's not around and the fat and carbs will combine to make him even bigger. Tough one, eh?

I've finished ubercamp now and feel 'reset' in bootcamp mode.

Secretly glad to have my good friend Dairy back though Wink

yesterday...

B: Lidl yogurt (about 200g)
L: Chicken salad
D: Curried cauliflower soup with crispy halloumi croutons

Morning all

Two black coffees so far today, now DS swimming lesson is done we're off for a full fry up Smile

Ruprekt · 23/02/2013 10:02

I am still not down to 179lbs!

181 lbs today.

More fat and water today.

Yama · 23/02/2013 10:05

Thanks Jake - how old is your son? My ds is 2.5 and loves his carbs too. He's too young to reason with so we have to get creative and often choose the lesser of two evils.

Anyway, fish and veg is a great meal. Enjoy.

BIWI · 23/02/2013 10:12

Lavender - I think you are let off from the Big Stick! Sounds like you had a great time.

Jake - read Bootcamp rules! Artificial sweeteners are not allowed! There's lots of controversy over sweeteners, and certain their manufacturers will tell you that they are safe Hmm but [http://www.dietdoctor.com/update-on-the-pepsi-max-test have a read of this ]]

But apart from that, we are aiming to eat natural and unprocessed food on Bootcamp, and sugar-free squash does not fit into that category.

Oh bugger Grin

Going to ditch the squash then. Oh this is going to be hard....but worth it I reckon.

BIWI · 23/02/2013 10:21

Well that's certainly the idea! Grin

Is it this weekend that's your birthday blackaffronted? Have a good one if so!

Ruprekt · 23/02/2013 10:55

Biwi.....i am just reading the diet doctor web page.

Do you rate him? Check out his amazing hflc breakfast with nuts and seeds. Looks delishnutrish!

Ruprekt · 23/02/2013 11:08

I think delishnutrish is an excellent word myself!

catinboots · 23/02/2013 11:37

I've started drinking coffee for the first time ever in my life.

Just wanted a break from all the fruit teas.

I had black coffee in Macdonalds yesterday and it was really nice. Then I made a black coffee at home today with whatever granules we had in the tin - and it was rank.

Can anyone recommend me a smooth, not too strong coffee for a novice?? Smile

Ruprekt · 23/02/2013 11:45

Cat, i drink Millicano. Tis lovely.

pyjamalover · 23/02/2013 11:46

[sneaks back in]

happy birthday black and timid

i'm doing very badly, fully deserve to be chucked off the thread. 2 weeks Intermittent stupidity, eating low carb meals as usual, then a massive bar of chocolate or similar between meals. Don't know why, just a compulsion to eat that shit. And i feel rubbish for it, heartburn, bloating etc. was pretty good and a complete convert for about 5 weeks, lost a couple of kilos, felt fab... Now am ruining it. Definitely thinking like a fat person and thinking how pathetic i am.

Sorry for this post after nothing all week. Don't really deserve to be here now Sad. Feel free to push me off the thread with big stick and slam metaphorical door in my face.

(although had buttery eggs and spinach with green tea for breakfast, and making beef stew with cauli rice later, just need to drag my brain along)

BIWI · 23/02/2013 11:48

If you drank it in McDonalds, it will have been ground coffee. Instant coffee will never taste as nice!

You need to get yourself a cafetiere and some ground coffee. Sainsbury do one called All Day Long that is very nice.

Ruprekt · 23/02/2013 11:52

Dh has made me the most delish breakfast.

Sauteed, mushrooms topped with porcetta and poached egg with hollandaise sauce.

EwanHoozami · 23/02/2013 12:27

pyjama of course you are welcome here, you great daftie Grin

Your food today sounds delish and perfectly low carb. Leave last week where it was and get lots of water down you.

BIWI · 23/02/2013 12:40

pyjama when you've finished hitting yourself with my big stick, can I have it back please? Grin

OP posts:
spilttheteaagain · 23/02/2013 12:42

Ruprekt the diet doctor guy's breakfast is delish. Obv you customise to nuts and seeds you like, I like almonds, sunflower, pumpkin and flax seeds on mine, and a small sprinkling (about 8) frozen blueberries. I love eating the blueberries frozen, a lovely crunch and then pop of sweetness, def recommend that, and quick and convenient and cheaper too!

pyjama welcome back. Don't beat yourself up. Just learn from it and carry on. Actually I think the odd slip up is sometimes helpful as you realise that either the food isn't as good as you remember or the side effects/how you feel afterwards are not nice, and it makes it less tempting next time. At least that's what I found after having a (very small) helping of porridge one evening a week or so ago in a fuck it moment. It was nice, but not as amazing a comfort food as I rememeber and I realised the LC food has been tastier, so I am no longer hankering after more porridge (which was the substance of my dreams and fantasies for the first week along with golden syrup sarnies!)

spilttheteaagain · 23/02/2013 12:43

Fried up savoy and bacon with garlic, a poached egg on top and s sprinkling of cheddar for lunch. Surprisingly nice.

thenightsky · 23/02/2013 13:04

Off out on the piss with mates later - will stick to single voddies and slimline tonic. Had big lunch of scrambled eggs with a big heap of smoked salmon to line my stomach. Will chose chicken kebabs off the menu tonight, but does anyone know the carb levels of piri-piri sauce?
