Week 7 - New Year Low Carb Bootcamp - Where We Get Tough!

Morning campers

Here is the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

This week sees the start of Ubercamp. This is entirely optional, by the way!

The idea is that we have three very strict days, keeping our carbs under 20g each day and consuming no dairy.

If you want to take part, I have put together three days' worth of meals as a guide - one which includes eggs and one which is an egg-free plan for those of you who don't like eggs. I'll also do one today which is purely fish-based.

As well as the meal plans, I've also written shopping lists and some recipes, where necessary, and the lovely Willie has put these on the spreadsheet - just look at the tabs at the bottom.

Evening ladies.

Another busy day. People at my work are ready to drop and even though I'm busy I don't get that post lunch slump that I used to get.

I must keep reminding myself of the positives, aside from weight loss, that this woe brings. Typical with our health, we take it for granted when we are well.

So, a reminder:

Clear skin
Energy
No stomach pain
Amazing food
Never hungry

There's probably more but that'll do for now. Smile

Iamaslummymummy · 21/02/2013 18:35

B yoghurt, cream and vanilla
L pork mince and cabbage stir fry
D left over chicken legs with hm coleslaw
Snacks cucumber spread with peanut butter
Drinks couple of teas with lactose free milk, chaitea and cherry tea.

Will have an eggy breakfast tomorrow

timidviper · 21/02/2013 18:39

I made burger and chips for tea last night (inspired by ubercamp although I'm not doing it properly) but mine were non-plague-bearing! Grin Hope you recover quickly from whatever lurgy yours has induced Black
I have discovered that a couple of spoonfuls of parmesan boosts the flavour and helps bind the burger together. I used a pack of mince, a crushed clove of garlic and 2tbsp parmesan to make 2 good size burgers.

halfthesize · 21/02/2013 18:44

ooh those burgers sound yummy viperGrin

timidviper · 21/02/2013 18:45

Anaisa I think you have a huge amount going on and hope you find your weight plummets when the stress eases. Don't rush into anything bariatric, surgery is not the easy, infallible solution the media paints it as and availability, standards and support vary widely. I work in the NHS and have some experience of this and although I am large enough that I could have this done (much larger than you if you have only 50lb-ish to lose) am very wary of it

BlackAffronted · 21/02/2013 18:48

Biwi, never had anything like this before! Just read your link, and I also have stomach cramps & diarrhea - woohooo Im allergic to carbs!

BlackAffronted · 21/02/2013 18:49

Mmm timid, those burgers sound fab! and much better than my face inflaming one!

halfthesize · 21/02/2013 18:54

hope you feel better soon BlackThanks

MrsHerculePoirot · 21/02/2013 18:57

Black hope you feel better soon.

WillieWaggledagger · 21/02/2013 19:08

Lots of people are off ill at work too, clearly lots going roubd

Lavenderhoney · 21/02/2013 19:10

Thanks for the kind words about my dd, she is 3, and ds is 5. We just stayed at home today and she was not sick but poorly. Hoping she recovers fully overnight! It really helped, with all your messages, even though I don't know any of you - bit lonely over here, and dh is always at work.

Well done all the losers and welcome new boot campers:) looking forward to a big fry up for breakfast?:)

Black, have a great time away, what course are you doing?

Very admiring of the uber campers. I am still doing the hardcore bootcamp but have had a glass of red wine tonight. The dc were supposed to be watching tv but turned out to be drawing on the walls. Proper pictures, not just scribble. And at eye level where paintings are. Dh will go mad when he sees it. I was fed up myself as I left them to cook their tea and they just don't do stuff like that.

Oh well, off to do my calenetics and then catch up on the thread.

mumat39 · 21/02/2013 20:34

Black, re the reaction you've had, I think it could more likely be something that you have put onto your face, like moisturiser which has had an ingredient changed, or the cold when you've been out and about.

If you had had an allergic reaction then I would expect there to be a rash over more of your body and not just your face. It could have been a sauce from the burger or something like that.

Has it been very itchy? That's another sign that it is an allergic reaction.

Some people are allergic to the cold, so it could also be that.

Hope the piriton helped and that you have a lovely weekend :)

Lavender, sorry to hear that your little one is poorly. I hope the fact that she's stopped being sick is a sign that she's on the mend. Scribbling on walls is such a pain. My dd also did it but all the way along our landing wall, in pencil one day when I was downstairs in the kitchen. I made her help me scrub it lean with some baby wipes. I think she realised that it was wrong and didn't do it again. SE had also not done anything like that before and hasn't since and she was about 3 at the time.

Hope your DH isn't too stressed about it. It's only a wall and these things happen and I suppose that's how they learn, so don't beat yourself up about it.

Hope you manage to rest up and relax this weekend. Only one day to go.

Thatgirlsevil, WOW! 16 pounds is amazing. Well done and hope you're feeling much better soon.

Jake, just wanted o say hello and welcome. I'm impressed that you'll be able to finish the briffa book in just 2 days. I've still got to finish mine, and have been meaning to for ages. I feel inspired to finish it now. Good luck for Monday, and as well as stocking up on things you can eat, don't forget to get rid of the stuff you shouldn't be eating. The carb withdrawal can be bad and can make you convince yourself that you have to have something. This woe is about listening to your body, but in the first few days, ignore it especially when your 'inner gobbler' surfaces. Wink

littlermissstan · 21/02/2013 20:35

Well if nothing else über camp has taught me that I definitely do not like fennel :) Have persuaded DP to give me the scales back so we will see tomorrow if there are other results!

spilttheteaagain · 21/02/2013 22:04

thats a shame littlermiss, it's gorgeous!

I have been a ravenous beast this evening. Have restrained myself (just about) from nipping to sainsburys for doughnuts (but oh I was tempted) and instead had 2 cream cheese pancakes with whipped cream and 1 strawberry. Since hunger still did not subside I then had a pile of coleslaw, green salad and cheese. And then a very few almonds and half a square of 81% choc. This is all after a dinner of cauliflower and broccoli cheese with steak. And flipping lovely that was too.

I blame it on the entire lack of sleep last night - teething toddler awake and crying every 10 mins for large parts of the night, permanently attached to my boob when not crying . Those sorts of nights always did leave me starving hungry the next day trying to boost my energy. Pretty proud I didn't go hell for leather through the sugar/chocolate though.

Going to sleep now before I start eating the furniture or anything else not nailed down. Night all.

Ruprekt · 21/02/2013 22:09

I have been snacky today.

Sausage and eggs
Celeriac soup
Sm salmon and avocado
Bag pork scratchings
Few salted almonds
Crispy pork belly with creamed cabbage and broccoli
Slice edam.

Water and peppermint tea

Bessie123 · 21/02/2013 22:28

blackaffronted I have itchy, red, bumpy skin on my arm, near my elbow, it feels like an allergy - I thought it might be dairy? I haven't eaten any wheat (al though I have suspected for a few years that I am a coeliac and never bothered to get checked out).

Bessie123 · 21/02/2013 22:29

Oh, just saw more posts. I reckon I am definitely allergic to the cold Wink

mumat39 · 21/02/2013 23:27

Another thing it could be is an intolerance rather than an allergy. Intolerances can be really very unpleasant. I am convinced I have a so of celiac issue and am definitely affected by wheat/gluten but on testing this wasn't proven.

I have always had issues with lots of different foods including wheat, garlic, pulses and beans and a few others. If I eat them sometimes I'm ok and other times it feels like I have ibs. Before this woe, I ate a lot of things that I knew could affect me, but I wouldn't eat them or anything for lunch for example if I had to be out of the house and away from my loo Blush but it never occurred to me to stop eating them.

I think I am one of those sorts of people who put weight on easily and crave carbs to the point of addiction, because i have continued to stuff my face eat stuff that i have intolerances to. i have put up with lots of discomfort over the years and it's only now, having seen the other side, ie no discomfort, that I realise that I can control this and am not a victim of my body and all I have to do is cut out what actually has and does make me unwell.

Since starting this woe, my stomach has been so settled, it's truly amazing. I have had 2 issues since starting. once when I ate Greek yogurt, on day 1 and felt so ill I had to make myself sick, and the other time was when I had some kidney beans and was super windy and really uncomfortable the same evening and the next day. I know I can't really tolerate dairy or pulses but I still ate them. I'm hoping I will learn to listen to my body. I also have come up in a lot of spots on my face since the kidney bean exposure so I suspect my body is still trying to get rid of what it sees as sort of toxic.

Other improvements in terms of issues caused by intolerances that I've noticed are :
I'm no longer afraid to eat at any time of the day as I know my body won't need to urgently expel the food I've eaten
I no longer have really god awful embarrassing wind anymore
I no longer feel lethargic or unwell unless it's actually due to a cold or a headache due to stress.

Apologies for my long ramble, but talk of possible allergies has made me realise in the lightbulb switching on sense, that as well as weight loss, I'm actually feeling so much better than I have in a long long time.

Right, I'll shut up now! Blush

BIWI · 21/02/2013 23:31

Please don't shut up! That's a brilliant post Thanks

I don't think many of us realise just how much some of the foods we eat affect us.

timidviper · 21/02/2013 23:35

mumat39 With your history don't ever take any carb blocker tablets. I was told these are a great idea if you are on a lowcarb diet and likely to have something with a few in. Apparently they contain something extracted from a bean that binds to the carb so it is not absorbed.

OMG! I tried them once (and once only!) and the wind was inbelievable. I could have blown myself across the kitchen! Grin

mumat39 · 21/02/2013 23:52

Really BIWI?? Blush

Timid, are at flying across the room! Grin. Tmi alert but mine were more the silent but seriously deadly variety Blush

I'm not sure if this is of interest to anyone, but it's about Lectins, which i think might possibly be the things i have an issue with.

Timid, it sounds like the natural version of carb blockers. I had no idea you could get tablets for that. It's amazing how science actually helps us consume stuff that probably isn't any good or us, only to take a magic pill to take it away again. Hmm

Xxx

mumat39 · 22/02/2013 00:21

Timid, that should say ARF at flying across room. Still making me chuckle. Grin

EMUZ · 22/02/2013 03:13

I am following threads with interest as I am kind of boot camping (Paleo and John briffa)
One thing my PT said the other day that stuck with me was don't let a "feck it moment" turn into a "feck it day" so if I fall off the wagon, don't think "oh well I might as well..."
She just told me drink lots of water and move on

Am really enjoying scrambled eggs with goats cheese as you only need a tiny bit of cheese for a good flavour
Fish parcels too (done in tin foil with herbs and lemon juice) are quick
And if you don't like (or don't want to break your teeth) Grin on pork crackling, there's a similar thing called pork crunch that they sell at Asda. Same carb count but it's kind of puffed up with air so lighter and more crunchy less tooth breaky

TheHumancatapult · 22/02/2013 04:40

Anasia

I was heavy enough ti qualify for Bariatric surgery but I watched my mum after she had it yes she lost a lot of weight . But at a Cost she can't eat much without being sick . Can no longer digest meat at all it makes her violently sick . Cant have food and drink at the same time and finds she feels better eating standing up . It is not a easy thing people think it Is

Oh I did not opt for surgery I switched to low carb and well I no longer qualify and infact am now a healthy weight for my height so means I still have the option to have a blow out now and then

TheHumancatapult · 22/02/2013 04:46

I had a BMI of 45... ( would qualfued me due to my mobility issue which can make loosing weight hard (spinal injury ) my BMI is now 24.2 yes I had to change the diet slightly ti allow for the wheelchair but I went hardcore on low carbs and the water cut the soda and cut the coffee down ti two cups and ditched gluten and cut dairy right down to ( 20 grams of dairy in day mainly at breakfast >
