I F - 5:2 - 4:3 - Maintaining the healthy weight

TalkinPeace2 · 01/02/2013 16:59

This thread is for those who have been doing IF for quite a while and are now at or nearing their target healthy weight.

How do we experience fasts and balance a stable food intake while having little or no weight to lose?

How to we ensure that this WOE does keep us at the healthy weight long term rather than revert to yoyo games?

I have now been at the same weight for a month. I'm happy with that. I'm also still enjoying the 24 hour fasts because of the clear mindedness I get during them.

How about you?

Either on this thread or the main one (I think the latter) B&W posted a link to study on feeling chilled that I found interesting and encouraging (I have a consistently low body temp and am miserably cold on fast days):

www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/225148.php

Worth reading if you're a fellow sufferer. Although it won't tell you how to warm up, the thought that low body temp is a positive pointer to longevity is cheering.

catsrus · 08/02/2013 00:32

A great example of how flexible this WOE is - was fasting very successfully when a friend got In touch to say he'd got a promotion so did I want to meet for a drink, which turned into a meal.... So I had the standard miso soup and other hot drinks until 6.30 and then had 2 x Wine and a lovely stir fry with noodles. Neither of us felt like pudding.

I had the benefit of about 21 hrs fasting, the pleasure of the spontaneous evening out and the satisfaction of eating what I wanted without going overboard and NO GUILT- I think this is what I'm aiming for long term Smile

Laska42 · 08/02/2013 09:11

Thats interesting Natascha and B&W* thanks for that link which id not seen before . I see they are talking mainly about Cronys . .. im not too up on this apart from the man in Dr Ms programme, (who didn't look that much like a fun guyeven if he is going to live much longer !!) ,Do they calorie restrict every day?..

I can see from my own experience of mainly 4:3 but now down to 5:2 most week , that I am most definitely cooler so its good to think that maybe a symptom that I'm getting the other health benefits.. I must do some more reading around..

BTW , I also wear thermals!! I do like the silk ones which are expensive but last for years and are so light and flexible .. However up until fairly recently I've not found thermal tops that I could wear to work as they all had high neck so showed under my scoop neck tops or dresses. But if you are feeling a bit flush these are brilliant as can be worn as a light but warm layer and they are definitely worth it as an investment. I have just replaced my 2yr old ones in a smaller size, but the old ones are still fine otherwise and im still using them . They sell them as singles also(and men's versions!!) but the 2 pack is cheaper.. I wear them every day at the moment, (no connection with the company!!)

Laska42 · 08/02/2013 09:20

Silk camisoles are great also . I like these and they come in lots of colours .. in fact right now I have a silk camisole , a silk scoop T , an ordinary scoop T and a wool tunic on.. (and silk long johns and leggins and boots !!)Grin ....and no I dont look like a bag lady because the thermals are all so fine.. but nice and warm here right now and just about to brave the boat to the mainland for a meeting ..

Bah would rather stay here in the warm.but I suppose I have to earn my £s . id i'm going to indulge my expensive tastes and pay the bills Hmm

SpiralSkies · 08/02/2013 09:48

Ooh, they look good Laska - lovely range of colours too. Sadly, I am working the bag lady look today: thermal jim-jams underneath my proper clothes. I won't venture beyond the village boundaries like this though. Probably.

ThinkICan · 08/02/2013 11:16

Need a talking to! Tip2 - you there? Browsing online I found a one week General Motors plan rehashed. As I am on a plateau, wondering if I should try a few days of that just to get off the hump. Day 1 - fruits. Day 2 - veggies. Day 3 - fruits and veggies. Day 4 - bananas and milk...

Literarygeek Fortunately it isn't our home we are renovating so at least we are warm in the evenings.

Alaska77 · 08/02/2013 13:09

Yes Think, what is a General Motors Plan?

Laska thanks for the link to the silk thermals, they look lovely. I have to admit to being a longstanding fan of long socks, though! I always wear long socks under trousers for work or jeans at the weekend. Keeps me nice and cosy. I'm also a big fan of Haramaki when the weather is cold. No chance of gaps of exposed skin!

I've also been feeling the cold more since starting this WOL, which I have put down to my decreasing body fat, and moving to a new desk at work which is right by a draughty door.

B&W glad you are fully recovered. I'm not feeling so good myself today; it was supposed to be a fast day but I woke up a bit fevery and shaky so have cancelled the fasting and am concentrating on nourishing comfort food like porridge and soup. I've had a few big changes in the last couple of weeks including a change of job which is requiring a bit more travel so I think it's all catching up with me.

Good luck to those of you starting The Shred - I'll be interested to find out how you get on! Do you need any equipment like weights or anything?

TalkinPeace2 · 08/02/2013 13:12

Hi there thinkIcan - been at the gym all morning so now catching up on email surfing MN and FB
GM diet - sorry but that is right out for me.
I have no interest in being told what diet combinations to have and what foods to eat on certain days.
I eat what I feel like when I feel like and always have family meals so would never want my kids to see me eating weird combinations.

The simplicity of 5:2 is what makes it sustainable.
All other "diets" are set up to fail so the publisher of the book can sell you a new book the next year.

General Motors plan? Are we eligible for a government bailout? Grin

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/02/2013 15:36

Alaska a pair of weights, that's it. Lots of squats, lunges, pushups and things that make use of your own body weight, otherwise. It's a decent workout for the time allotted.

B&W very glad to hear you're feeling better!

ThinkICan · 08/02/2013 16:54

Right, the GM Plan: This 7-day diet plan was developed for the employees of General Motors. The main aim of this program was to attain good health and fitness. A look at the major benefits of the diet should be enough to convince you of its importance and success:

Lose 5kgs to 8kgs within 7 days
Reduces flab from the tummy area
Adds natural glow to the skin
Rids the body of the toxins and you actually feel light and happy

The diet plan will sound outrageously cruel, but it becomes easy to follow if you complete the first two days successfully. By successful completion, it is obviously implied that you resist every single urge to break the diet regime. However, you must get a nod from your doctor before attempting this diet.
2. Day 1
Only fruits, with the exception of bananas, litchi, mangoes and grapes. Eat lots of watermelon, melon, pomegranates, apples, lime, oranges, strawberries and any other fruit that you like. Eat 20 times a day, if you want to, but only fruits.

  1. Day 2 Only vegetables. Begin your day with one boiled potato with a tea-spoon of butter. For the rest of the day, eat only raw, boiled or otherwise cooked vegetables without oil. Don't eat more than one potato for the day. You can eat cabbage, carrots, cucumber, gourd and other vegetables. Add basil and oregano seasoning to them to make them more edible.

*If you make it through Day 2, then half the battle is won!
Day 3
Basically a combination of Day 1 and Day 2, which means you can eat fruits and vegetables of your liking, but no bananas or potatoes. Eat to your heart?s content and don?t forget to drink a lot of water.
Must drink 12 ? 15 glasses of water every day. No fruit juices except on day 7, no coffee, tea except black or lime water without sugar. 45 mins of workout daily or on alternate days helps get superb results.
Day 4
Bananas and Milk. You have the liberty to eat almost 6 bananas and have up to 4 glasses of milk. Though, you were told that bananas lead to weight gain, in this diet, the bananas act as a source of sodium and potassium, since your salt intake during the GM diet had reduced considerably. You can even have the highly diluted, yet yummy vegetable soup (tomatoes, onions, capsicum and garlic). It is such a respite after the three days on fruits and vegetables only.
Day 5
Another feast day where you can eat sprouts, tomatoes and cottage cheese (paneer). You could also eat chicken or soya chunks. Supplement your diet with the wonder soup. Increase the intake of water on account of the urea formation
Day 6
Similar to Day 5, so you can eat sprouts, cottage cheese, chicken, soya chunks and other vegetables. No tomatoes. Supplement your diet with the wonder soup.
Day 7
It is the last day and you must be feeling very light and happy. This day you can have fruit juice, a bowl of rice or half roti, and any vegetable that you want to eat. If you are trying to lose to weight for a special occasion then you should try this diet at least two months before that. Also, you should maintain a gap of three to seven days between subsequent regimes.

Blush as I wait for the responses!

TalkinPeace2 · 08/02/2013 17:01

thinkican
The links I found said the General Motors link is a myth.
And its just so complicated - you are guaranteed to fail. And what if you do not LIKE one of the foods.

Sorry but I'll stick to nice and simple 5:2 - wine and pizza tonight.
BMI holding steady still at 20.5

ThinkICan · 08/02/2013 17:05

Just trying to shake it up as all the shaking I tried is not getting me out of my rut - boo hoo :(

SpiralSkies · 08/02/2013 17:26

ThinkICan That sounds like torture! I remember my mother going on a bananas-and-skimmed-milk diet in the 70s. Every two hours it was a glass of milk or a nana, alternating. She always swore it worked but, er...

What about doing your 16-hour fast (or however you work your fast days) and then just having veggies? The idea of eating fruit 20 times a day, as suggested, would play havoc with your insulin levels Shock

I've found, in the past and with other diets, that abandoning it completely for a few days has shocked my metabolism into action somehow. I Dukan-ed for yonks and it wasn't until I hit the f*ck-it button and stuffed a bacon sarnie with white bread and a bottle and a bit of wine that the plateau broke. But then it was back to eating a chicken a day, of course. The horror.

I do think our bodies get used to a certain 'regime' but your General Motors diet sounds more like you'll be wrestling your metabolism to the ground and kicking its head in!!! There must be a better way!!!!

GreenEggsAndNichts · 08/02/2013 17:56

ThinkICan I admit, parts of that actually made me laugh out loud. Grin

I've just read some commentary online, including an op-ed in the NYT, and supposedly it works. Obviously in the short term, as I've no idea how long it stays off.

If you do it, let us know how it goes. :) It sounds like it would make for amusing commentary, at least.

ThinkICan · 08/02/2013 18:12

Thanks Spiral - just thinking out loud. Will need a lot of will power to do it, I guess and I don't know if I'm up to it! GreenEggs - I will do some more research and some more thinking. And will let you know if I do it and disappear in a cloud of bananas and milk!

ThinkICan · 08/02/2013 18:13

And it's so refreshing to think out loud with such a generous, thoughtful, non-judgmental bunch of people. I have yet to meet such kindness in real life. Love you all Thanks

SpiralSkies · 08/02/2013 18:19

Aw, I wish MN had a 'like' button. I agree, it's nice to be able to discuss this stuff without being shot down in flames Grin

frenchfancy · 08/02/2013 20:17

In the kindest most none judgemental way I can think to say it -that sounds like utter b*l**s. Of couse you will lose weight you are doing 0:7 rather than 5:2. Worth it perhaps if you have a wedding to go to and need to fit into the dress, but otherwise life is just too short.

frenchfancy · 08/02/2013 20:19

And I love you all too (but I have been on the Wine.

BlueGoddess · 08/02/2013 21:55

I've just been talking to TalkinPeace2 in real life. She's been booted off so can't post herselfConfused - something to do with baiting Michael Grove's wife?

McGloom · 08/02/2013 23:16

Michael Gove the Education Minister? I pity his wife. Unless she's a moron like him, then I'm right behind TiP2. Was this on an MN thread?!
