I F - 5:2 - 4:3 - Maintaining the healthy weight

TalkinPeace2 · 01/02/2013 16:59

This thread is for those who have been doing IF for quite a while and are now at or nearing their target healthy weight.

How do we experience fasts and balance a stable food intake while having little or no weight to lose?

How to we ensure that this WOE does keep us at the healthy weight long term rather than revert to yoyo games?

I have now been at the same weight for a month. I'm happy with that. I'm also still enjoying the 24 hour fasts because of the clear mindedness I get during them.

How about you?

Yes Greeneggs, a big thanks to you Thanks

Laska42 · 07/02/2013 13:56

Hi just popping in.. fasting today , but really hungry.. funny how some days are harder than others , so really looking forward to my whole bag of stir fry veggies with h/m peanut and chilli sauce later on!

Think I can . ive been drinking green tea for years . but I dont think its been particualrly slimming in itseslf although I know some people claim it..

( I reckon its the loss of 3 cups of tea with sugar that did it .. esp if he had milk also !!). ill go work the calories out ..

back later

TalkinPeace2 · 07/02/2013 13:56

Green tea is a red herring.
Not having a kilo of sugar a week and adding an hour a day to his exercise has rather more to do with it ...

Hi all, eating day today, but managed 2 good fasts this week, not going for 3rd (again) as heading away for the weekend tonight with the children, and already have my 4 tins of gin and tonic bought for the train journey......Blush but really I deserve it, house is immaculate...hence we'e going away to leave it clean and tidy for viewings.

breadandwine sorry to hear you are still feeling unwell, I hope you are feeling much better soon.

I would also like to see manonboard back, i enjoyed his outspoken ways, and particularly his humour.

so laska what have you decided on with regard to exercise? the dancing idea is a good one, can you find someone to go to a dance class with? I know someone who took up tango and loved it. and I did my own version of couch25k....it was a bit slow in teh beginning and then when it got difficult I carried on doing 1 min walking (I am asthmatic) and that worked for me, but in all honesty so much better when the weather improves.

pedometer also a great tip, you can get quite competitive about beating your own steps totals each week.

thanks for the link to Shred i still haven't seen it so hope to watch and be inspired, but I need to start doing some exercise too, my wobbly tum seriously needs toning up, no amount of weight loss is going to do that!

ThinkICan · 07/02/2013 16:35

Thanks laska and "TiP2 on the green tea advice. Guess a lifetime of being overweight has you looking for miracles all the time! Mumofcrazy* - I should start walking/climbing stairs/doing push-ups which were the only forms of exercise I had. Or the tummy is gonna get me too! And all you knowledgeable people here - please post any good info you get on Dr M's site too. Thanks.

SpiralSkies · 07/02/2013 17:33

Oddly enough, green tea is something I turn to when I need a kickstart in the weight loss department - I do find that 2 or 3 massive mugs affects what I see on the scales the following day. Under no illusions that it burns fat or anything as exciting as that but suspect it's simply much better for ridding the body of excess fluid than ordinary tea. Very handy during times of hormone hell!

Laska42 · 07/02/2013 19:06

HI again.. just musing after readingMOCNKpost above I have lots of unused DVDs so dont want to add another one to the pile.. but i?ve also heard good things about 30 Day shred..and its 20 mins a day .. I could commit to this I think , especially if I post about it.. has anyone here done it?
On the old WW thread i used to be on people raved about it .. i just looked at level one up on You Tube and it looks challenging but reassuringly d more like the things i used to do way back when.. (so probably more reassuring for this Granny, than some of the other super high octane ones i've seen recently and haven't done.. ) Any opinions?

Ive just had a HUGE and fab dinner for 350cals...
A pack of co op basics stir fry veg, (beansprouts , cabbage , shredded carrot ,) and added some mushrooms spring onion, sugar snaps babycorn and red pepper .
Stir fried it all in chicken stock and then made a quick sauce out of another couple of spoonfuls of stock, some shredded ginger , garlic , soy sauce, a spoon of peanut butter and some chilli ...
Am totally stuffed...

Good to see you here again Cyclistist ..Strangely I also find 5:2 harder .. I actually prefer 4:3 also , but haven?t managed it consistently since Christmas( though am back to my pre Christmas weight now)

TIP2 posted the advice on the other thread - she may have done before although if so, i?ve missed it.. but is really great advice I think .. and perhaps also for maintaining

Think of your food on a weekly basis.
You are not 'depriving' yourself. You are saving your health and balancing.
2 days a week of fasting
2 days a week of trying to stay under your TDEE
2 days a week of trying to stay within 10% of your TDEE
1 day splurge

but I can see that my desire to have both Friday and Saturday evening Wine could be a prob for me though Grin

SpiralSkies · 07/02/2013 19:25

Laska, I do the 30 day shred, it's really good. For something that only takes 20 mins, it really delivers results. It might make you wish you could reach into the telly and punch Mean Gillian in the eye though. She is tough!

Laska42 · 07/02/2013 19:39

sprial im 55 ..slim now but a sloth.. havent exercised in some time..prone to a slightly dodgy back so like the fact that apart from star jumps it didnt look too high impact .. well at level one anyhow..id is it do you think? .. I really need to tone up the wrinkly skin now...but it'll be no good sitting onthe shelf.. no 99p copies on ebay ! it seems very popular

.. so do you think its worth a bash for someone unfit and oldish and easily lead astray ? how long have you been doing it and are you 25 and super fit?

Laska42 · 07/02/2013 19:41

literary she was just too cheery young and bright for me.. I am a curmudgeonly old trout

will you sell/ lend me your copy? PM me if you will..

Laska42 · 07/02/2013 19:43

I teaspoon is ok .. if the rest is all veggies not cooked in oil .. thats what I had .. but I want Wine now and im fasting also ..

SpiralSkies · 07/02/2013 19:48

Ha, Laska I wish I was 25 and super-anything! I'm 43 and have iffy knees and a lurking back problem. The star jump-y bit isn't too bad - sometimes I have to miss out a little bit of that but the other bits I find really good. Kind of got out of the habit over the summer but I did it religiously (after my dog died and I wasn't marching about like a loon every day) for about 6 weeks and I have to say, my arms looked the best they ever have! I've just started doing it again over the past few weeks - I can't believe how unfit I've become again.

I very much recommend it - you won't get better results for 20 mins a day!

Laska42 · 07/02/2013 19:58

ok ive been persuaded ,dont worry literary have just bought a copy !!
right when it comes i'm going to commit to this ..

perhaps we can get a little 30 day shred 'club' going even if its just me and you spiral

SpiralSkies · 07/02/2013 20:08

Ooh, yes Laska , we should certainly cheer each other on. 'Chatting' about this actually inspired me to do my 100 sit-ups this evening. Can't shred tonight though as Evil Teen will laugh at me and then I'll have to kill him and the day will all go horribly, horribly wrong... Shock Mind you, if I'm going to throttle him, I'll probably have to wait until a non-fasting day so I can do it properly.

Aw, literarygeek, children are so funny when they're littlies. What a cutie, pointing out your sweatiness!!! I do not exercise or even move about in front of my darling offspring, the ensuing mockery is just not worth it.

Laska42 · 07/02/2013 20:19

Grin spiral I know how that feels . though actually i'm quite sad still mine has now left home (he's 22!!)

Thanks any way literary but as now ive committed my ££s and said publicly ill give it a go ..I may actually do it .

Right.. id better go clean the kitchen and bathroom before the weekend starts.. (Also it will take my mind off Wine.)

BTW I meant to say earlier this week when someone over on the other thread was asking if it was normal to feel so cold.. well i have been since ive been doing this ( no bad thing for us menos) but this week i've regressed into being a school kid and have rediscovered long socks! .. they are great .. a definate recommend if you wear trousers or jeans to work and sit around at a desk al day .. Grin

SpiralSkies · 07/02/2013 20:26

Oh, long socks Laska - why didn't I think of that? My long-suffering bloke can't keep up with the crazy swings from toes like icicles to the jolly night 'hots'. Some nights he's begging to close the window because he's got ice in his hair, the next I'm in bed wearing all the clothes I own. Never a dull moment. I quite miss my Son 1 too - he's in his first year at Uni.

Can I suggest you do your first shred session on a day when you don't have to go anywhere the next day? I ached in places I didn't know I had the day after. And I'm reasonably fit but, man, Gillian does what she says on the tin!

SarahWithAFringeOnTop · 07/02/2013 21:06

Two pairs of socks on fast days, one of them thermal... Blush But I am getting better at working out how to fend off the cold. Best bet is not to let it take hold in the first place but go around wrapped up like an Eskimo all day Smile

frenchfancy · 07/02/2013 21:32

Sod long socks, I wear long johns! But I am working in an unheated house (we are renovating) so that is my excuse.

Hi folks

Thought I'd better come on here and announce my complete recovery from whatever lurgi it was that afflicted me! I should have posted this earlier, but I was drafting a new 5:2 carrot cake recipe.

Thanks for all your expressions of concern and good wishes. I have to say these threads kept me going whilst I was laid up. I do enjoy your company! Thanks

Great post Cyclist! Strange you didn't get on with 5:2. You could always do 6:1 with a 'mini-fast' later in the week, as I've decided to move to.

I keep a pair of woollen walking socks by the bed in case I get cold feet in the night - it's only happened half a dozen times, but I'm ready if it strikes again. The good thing is - info on the Tips thread - it's a sign that the body is moving in the right direction.

Have a look at that carrot cake, folks, it really is a simple to make, tasty cake!
