I F - 5:2 - 4:3 - Maintaining the healthy weight

TalkinPeace2 · 01/02/2013 16:59

This thread is for those who have been doing IF for quite a while and are now at or nearing their target healthy weight.

How do we experience fasts and balance a stable food intake while having little or no weight to lose?

How to we ensure that this WOE does keep us at the healthy weight long term rather than revert to yoyo games?

I have now been at the same weight for a month. I'm happy with that. I'm also still enjoying the 24 hour fasts because of the clear mindedness I get during them.

How about you?

Marking place... still lurking!

Well done all you shredders! I can do a grand total of one girly press-up. Blush So maybe the shred is not for me until I can manage a bit more.

Laska42 · 15/02/2013 06:52

re: stretching and 30 day shred : prettymaids and Snowkeyand skinnyeye over on the main thread have posted this advice and I think its pretty good. (especially for people like me not that used to exercising)

Prettymaids: One initial tip to maybe pass on if you get chance is the reason everyone's calf muscles are aching is most likely because the warm up is short. I have no problem with that at all but with all the high impact jumping around doing star jumps and jump rope your calves really need a little help. When you are doing your arm crosses and the like in the warm up try adding a few gentle calf raises. That should do the trick, it works for me

Snowkey:
I think Jillians stretching is much too brief in the The Shred, I was a bit shock at their brevity], am also a bit hmm at the suggestion that people do it for 30 days in a row, muscles need rest days, especially when they are not used to working so hard - that was apparently something she had forced upon her - she gets more thorough in her subsequent exercise vids like "Ripped in 30" with better stretching and reduced recommended frequency.

Skinnyeye:
'More mature muscles older need to be treated with a little extra care with regard to stretching, be careful'.

im up early but NOT doing it this morning Bear as leg muscles really sore this so morning will be doing some yoga stretches instead ..

Have a great weekend.. and perhaps (as said advice) give yourself a day off.. But better ok it with your weekend Evil Jillian ATB first!! Grin

Prettymaidsallinarow · 15/02/2013 08:21

I'm here Grin....I mentioned on the other thread that in her other more recent DVD Ripped in 30 which is excellent by the way, she says to do it 6 days a week. Can't remember if she says the same on the intro to shred but will check it out later tonight. Seriously though you will be amazed how much you improve in a short space of time.
A little tip is to add a few gentle calf raises when you are doing the arm crosses etc during the warm up, that will probably sort out the aches which will probably be due to the star jumps, jump rope. She isn't a fan of static stretches on cold muscles as that is when you have more chance of a pull but a calf raise should be ok. Good luck to all shredders today Wink

BetsyVanBell · 15/02/2013 08:32

Evil Jillian(s), I'm going to take on board the advice above and not Shred everyday, I have an (intermittently) good exercise regime already and like to mix it up so I'll be aiming for a couple of Shreds per week (with added warm up & stretches), plus a run, plus a long yoga session (plus my usual getting-around-the-place cycling). Phew, sounds optimistic actually! I'm pleased to report I only ache in one place - upper chest by my armpits - think it was the lying down chest press with weights thing, not an exercise I've done for years!

Bordercollielover · 15/02/2013 08:42

Yes America I do have another stone to lose so probably shouldn't be on this thread but I am still interested in the shared opinions of the people who have been doing 5:2 for several months so don't want to be on the old thread which suddenly got swamped by people who haven't followed up yet on reading the research etc.
By the time I am out of the wheelchair there should be evidence of whether the Shredding is a good idea!

Fillybuster · 15/02/2013 11:36

May I join in here please? I know I've only been IFing since the begining of January, but I'm within 2-3lbs of target, have done almost all my homework and am struggling to find motivation and occasional support on the 5:2 thread (which has been utterly swamped the past few weeks....)

I promise to behave and try to avoid asking stupid questions :) I'm really interested in continuing with IF as a proper WOL, not a diet and am getting tired of answering 'can I eat breakfast/lunch/dinner/the whole blinking fridge?' questions daily...! Grin

Fillybuster · 15/02/2013 11:39

I've been using my Xbox Kinect (thank you MN product trials :) ) do so some great workouts - it's got everything broken down by body part (abs, arms etc) but also boxercise, bollywood dance, cardio classes at all levels. Haven't tried shred yet but....

catsrus · 15/02/2013 11:59

welcome filly - but oh another exerciser !

I have zero motivation for it - not even going to do a long walk today as moving too much makes me feel queasy. Stupidly had too much Wine last night - I just can't take it anymore, should have switched to Brew after the first bottle was finished Sad. Am hitting the carbs today to settle my stomach - can I resist the panettone left over (untouched) from Xmas? do I want to resist? wouldn't this be a good use of it? - medicinal!

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 15/02/2013 12:15

catsrus I know how you feel!

laska thanks for the idea of measuring my old trousers waist was 42 inches. I've just compared them to my size 12 that I'm in now & I cannot believe the difference! I was going to get rid of my big clothes but I think I may keep a couple just to see how far I've come.

Just had a friend pop over & she told me I looked fantastic! Yay.

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 15/02/2013 12:16

Oh & catsrus I don't exercise. I think its a swear word. Grin

ThinkICan · 15/02/2013 13:45

Just posted this on our regular thread. For those who have reached a plateau:
The body has set points in weight which it strives to defend. This happens when you've lost 10% of your weight. You need to give it a break for 2 - 3 months, then restart your diet. And you will lose another 10%. Exercise is vital to lower your set point, esp of the larger muscles, also add intense bursts or sprints to jog your body out of exercise that it has become used to. Don't lower your calories further, for you won't lose anything that way. I plateaued when I reached 10% weight loss and have been reducing calories further with no success for 50 days now and getting ready to throw up my hands. So I think there might be truth in this. A research thread too here: jn.nutrition.org/content/127/9/1875S.full

catsrus · 15/02/2013 15:01

the panettone was nice Blush

still feel a bit though - lol aftereight ATM is really is a swear word for me, once upon a time, in 200, I used to go to the gym and enjoy it.... so who knows.

frenchfancy · 15/02/2013 16:52

No shredding for me today. I've just been for a run (c25k wk5 r2) and tonight I'm going out to the Ballet (get me!) so I need to go and get ready.

V. excited Grin

virginposter · 15/02/2013 16:52

Still doing 4:3 hoping to shift these last 5lbs and become an 'official' maintainer. Eating day today and friends took us out for lunch as a thank you and said have anything you like. So, I had a wonderful homemade burger with gerkins, mayo and bun with chunky chips of which I've never seen the like. They were very chunky but at the same time light and fluffy on the inside but the crispy outside was almost like a very fine batter - devine.

Well, I immediately took half the bun and put it to one side as my idea was that if I was going to leave anything it would be the bun, and then I tucked in. I was really hungry as yesterday was a fast day and I didn't have any breakfast this morning as I knew I was out to lunch.
About three quarters of the way into my meal I realised I was starting to feel full but I still had about 7 chips left and a little burger and salad so now it was decision time. The chips were calling me but my tummy was saying 'you don't want that horrible over-full feeling do you'. So I finished two bites of the burger and quickly asked my friend and DH if they wanted the chips - phew, crisis averted, everyone happy and my tummy nicely full.

Desert - no way, just black coffee and felt proud of myself for going with my full feelings and not being greedy and scoffing the lot Grin

AmericasTorturedBrow · 15/02/2013 18:09

Well done virginposter! I think I'm finally starting to listen to my body in a similar way again. When I first started this WOE the overall change in my attitude and approach to food was huge but then I lost it and have struggled to get it back, but yesterday was the first non fast day I actually paid attention to my body until I sank a bottle of prosecco with DH and gobbled a LOT of churros y chocolate

Interesting conversations about ADShredding, makes sense for recovery I think. I'm failing as Jillian as I had to quit Shred halfway through today due to clingy DD, I'll do it when she naps later instead.

Ooooh frenchfancy ballet?!

BCL i still have 10lbs to lose to target as well...

frenchfancy · 16/02/2013 07:48

The ballet was lovely. Swan Lake by the St Petersbourg Ballet. They are doing a tour of France and had one night an hour from here. We bought tickets for Dd1 for xmas. Dh got to stay at home and look after dd3.

Another nsv (which is a good job as I'm not having any sv) I could decide what to wear ad most of my clothes don't fit anymore. In desperation I pullef out a dress I haven't worn for about 16 years. One of the only thingd I have kept since pre dc. It is a small size 12. It fits Grin in fact it is a little loose across the hips.

frenchfancy · 16/02/2013 07:50

sorry for typos - new phone Blush

virginposter · 16/02/2013 08:00

french Isn't it a wonderful feeling when that happens - well done!

Aftereightsarenolongermine · 16/02/2013 08:47

french that's fantastic.

Skinnyeye · 16/02/2013 09:42

Morning maintainers,
America I still have 3 lbs to get down to original target of 10 stones but now realise that I have a bit more to lose so have a revised target of 9 and a half. I am just now on the threshhold of a healthy weight for the first time in years and have moved down from the obese in September. The weight loss has been remarkable but its the other benefits that encourage me to follow this WOE. My life has totally changed and I have never felt better Grin

Non fast and non run day today and the first dry weekend day in ages. Heading out for a cycle. Enjoy your day whatever you are doing

BetsyVanBell · 16/02/2013 10:31

Anyone Shreding today? Just done my session [smugface], DH said "you look like you've had a workout" as I appeared in the kitchen dripping a trail of sweat... I'm trying to convince him to do it too, already got him happily fasting - I don't think we could do it at the same time on grounds of space and I've only got one mat and one set of weights!

I put some real effort into the lunges today - by the time I was on the last couple of side lunges & arm lifts I was starting to howl from the effort - love it! [gluttonforpunishmentface].

I took prettymaids' advice and did some calf lifts and attempted some toe lifts(?) too (where you rock back on your heels after a calf lift and raise your toes) - I do this as a yoga warm up on cold muscles so should be ok. Would have been amusing to watch as it made me a bit wobbly trying to co-ordinate it with arm swinging Blush.

I bought some blood oranges yesterday thinking I might try that cake again with a modified recipe but on reflection I think this weekend baking regime is setting me up for sugar cravings during the week so I think I might just eat the lovely things instead. I have a history of unpleasant sugar addiction which has been nicely under control for a while but would rather avoid the stuff as much as possible really.

Ooh, just remembered, I made cranberry oatcakes over Christmas which were delightful and pretty healthy, I've got all the ingredients, maybe I'll do those for my baking fix.

frenchfancy · 16/02/2013 10:36

Well done betsy I'll shred later I promise. I need to exercise the horse first though.

Prettymaidsallinarow · 16/02/2013 12:05

Just about to shred, watched the intro for the first time in ages and she doesn't say anything about having a day off like she does in her more recent Ripped in 30 DVD. I would thoroughly recommend having at least one day off and for those of you going for every other day that will be absolutely fine too Smile
I also agree with everyone who recommends mixing it up with other things like running, cycling, walking etc. All good stuff and exactly what I do. I also use a lot of other DVDs when I can't get out to do my favourite exercise which is early morning fell running Grin

I just realised the yesterday it's actually 2 and a half years since I started shreddingShock
Good luck to all shredders and fasters today Smile

Prettymaidsallinarow · 16/02/2013 12:10

Well done Betsy, it's just the best feeling isn't it? Oh well, evil Jillian is calling me, better get going.........

welshmill · 16/02/2013 12:54

catsrus another non-exerciser here (apart from walking the dog every day). I'm 45 (soon to be 46) have a dodgy knee and a chronic bad shoulder (shortened tendons or something - work related) so all that arm waving is out of the question or I'd end up a cripple. I even did yoga a few years ago and managed to pop a rib out in my back Blush.
