Question Thread for New Year Bootcampers

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 16:14

As there are so many of us doing this, the chat thread is moving pretty quickly - and it means that lots of questions are being missed.

So here is a specific thread you to post any questions you might have about Bootcamp or low carbing.

Thank you!

I have to tell you about DH as he is a 2 sugar in every drink sort of bloke!! Tea, cappuccino, fruit and peppermint teas - everything!

Yet when I read him some of the links on here about sugar, he took it all on board and has not touched sugar since! He now has camomile tea unsweetened, peppermint tea unsweetened and no coffee at all. To say I am gobsmacked is an understatement.

He is a chef and surrounded by food all day and has not cheated once. Well done Mr Ruprekt!! Grin

JustasmallGless · 16/01/2013 07:44

Bloody hell well done indeed Mr Ruprekt! I think once you understand the science it really does make a difference and you aren't tempted. Although I might cave if I worked surrounded by food Wink

BigStickBIWI · 16/01/2013 10:01

Gless - just check the ingredients in that Vit C tablet - I bought some recently and was Shock to discover that one of the ingredients was potato starch! (Sainsbury's own)

eeep. Am taking Sainsbury's own multivitamin atm Blush

BigStickBIWI · 16/01/2013 10:14

Just check the ingredients - it might be fine!

Pills are a real problem more generally if you are trying to avoid sugar. I don't think I've found a painkiller (not that I often need one) which does not have either sugar, aspartame or caffeine in it for adults.

BigStickBIWI · 16/01/2013 10:53

There is a pharmacological reason for the caffeine though, Xenia - it makes the active ingredient work better/faster.

Also worth noting that ibuprofen/aspirin (NSAIDs - non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) can also impede weight loss. Paracetamol is a better pain-killer in this regard.

Ilovemyteddy · 16/01/2013 13:21

Xenia I'm a bit of a sun worshipper, despite all the advice to the contrary, so am definitely up for a midday sunbathe. Not sure about the 'little on' though as I will be at work most days at midday in the summer. Could give my colleagues a thrill Grin

This is, of course, assuming that we get some sun this summer...

Xenia · 16/01/2013 13:35

Ah, I see. I am lucky I probably take one painkiller every 5 years but they certainly seem to have a lot of stuff shoved in there to make them sweet and spiked to keep you hyper I suppose, pep you up.

(Sunshine - yes good. Anyway my advice is not going to help most of us until the summer given the weather here so not sure i mentioned it but I do think a lot of recent research is finding that a little bit of sun without suncream as long as you don't burn is a good idea and apparently vit D tablets just do not get you enough of the stuff in the right way which works.).

mumat39 · 16/01/2013 13:48

Xenia, I've read that too, about lying in the sun starkers for about 20 minutes. People with darker skins actually need longer in the sun.

I've also read reports that suggest that people who burn very quickly probably have low levels of Vit D. If these are right in the body then you should be able to manage time in the sun without burning, including going red.

Also, if you're not keen on tablets, due to other additives, you can get spray Vit D which is squirted into the mouth and drops. I give my dc drops that I know are safe for their allergies. I take Vit d3 drops where each drop contains 2000iu.

I have read somewhere that you can safely take much more than that. But I can't remember how much, 10000 rings a bell.

mumat39 · 16/01/2013 13:49

Sorry, I meant to say the ones I take are in olive oil and somehow made on sheepskin wool. If anyone is interested, let me know and I'll link to the ones we have.

Xenia · 16/01/2013 13:51

(Yes, and remember for 2 million years our ancestors were outside pretty much all day and often with not much on (unless they were eskimos I suppose) so it's likely to make sense that the sun might do us a bit more good than people have thought in recent times)

mumat39 · 16/01/2013 13:52

Sheeps wool. Not sheepskin.

PennyHofstadter · 16/01/2013 16:25

kitchenfairy I have a water bottle with a filter in it. I was given it by my DP's mum at Christmas but you can find them online. I've found it really helps with drinking water... we don't have the best water around here either but the filter helps take away that strange taste! Apologies if thats not what you were after at all.

I have (another) question - what foods can I eat that are higher in fat than protein? I've found that sometimes I've been eating around the same amount of fat and protein but everytime I eat something that I think may increase my fat its also increased my protein intake.

I put oily dressings on my salads, eat eggs cooked in butter for breakfast, have a bit of cheese with my lunch or for a snack, eat avocados... I'm at work all day so I've generally been taking in salads at lunch time that I can prepare easily and quickly in the morning.

If anyone has any ideas i'd be grateful.

PennyHofstadter · 16/01/2013 16:27

Sorry I think I may have just answered a question from another thread there!!

mumat39 · 16/01/2013 17:46

Hello.

Is ready to eat coleslaw okay to have? I have a desire for something convenient and really fancy some coleslaw, to have with my chicken salad tonight. I was thinking of either m&s or sainsburys. I'm feeling very lazy.

BigStickBIWI · 16/01/2013 19:17

Penny - the trick is to do just what you have been doing - to add fat to protein. However, you also need to ensure that you're eating fatty meat/fish - so chicken thighs rather than chicken breast, salmon rather than cod, pork belly rather than fillet, etc.

mumat39 - I wrote a post about this recently. Be careful as they do vary enormously in terms of the carbs. I think I'm right in saying that in Sainsbury (who make millions of different times of coleslaw) it's the Sainsbury's Basics coleslaw which is the lowest in carbs.

mumat39 · 16/01/2013 20:47

Thanks BIWI. Sorry I missed your previous post about this.

I ended up having an M&s one before i read your reply, so hope I haven't blown it this week.

BigStickBIWI · 16/01/2013 23:18

How many carbs per 100g did it have?

OP posts:
mumat39 · 17/01/2013 00:07

I should have checked that shouldn't I. I've read the rules but still forgot. Having a dim day today. Sorry.

GinotPrigio · 17/01/2013 07:57

Morning. BIWI I have a question if you don't mind.

I'm on Day 17 but my weight has stalled since Day 8. I do eat quite a bit of cheese in various forms - I might have some cubed cheese at lunch, and then cheese sauce made from cream, boursin and cheddar in the evening.

I think I'm going to try to cut down the cheese to only one snack size babybel a day. Is there anything else you suggest to kickstart my weight loss again?

Thanks! x

Ilovemyteddy · 17/01/2013 09:03

Ginot I'm sure BIWI will be along to help but my answer would be to maybe cut down on the cheese.
Also you need to make sure you are eating enough fat and drinking enough water.

A lot of LCers will tell you that you often get a stall and then the weight whooshes off. I think the body does a lot of readjusting on this WOE and it may be that your initial weightloss was water and glycogen. I've never bothered with the ketostix to check whether I am in ketosis or not. Usually I know because when I am I never feel hungry.

I lost just over three punds last week. This week, without cheats, I haven't lost an ounce. It's just the way it is sometimes. The important thing is not to starve yourself because that doesn't work!

Just stick with it. You WILL get a whoosh at some stage.

GinotPrigio · 17/01/2013 10:18

Thanks teddy. I am definitely drinking enough water, between 3 and 4 litres a day. I use butter in all my cooking and eat fatty meat so I don't think its that. It probably is just a short stall as you say. I just need to be patient and hang on in there!

BigStickBIWI · 17/01/2013 10:32

Ginot - you lost half a stone in the first week - it's perhaps not surprising that you haven't lost since then! However, I would also say that it sounds like you are eating not just a lot of cheese but a lot of dairy, which does impede people. Butter is different - you can keep on eating butter - but try dropping the cream/cheese for a few days and see what happens.

But like teddy says, don't suddenly start dropping what you're eating - just keep on keeping on.

OP posts:
Anaisa · 17/01/2013 11:12

Ginot - I'm in the same boat as you, 7 pounds loss last week and nothing so far this week. I have, however lost about an inch off my waist since Monday so I am still pleased. I don't know if you are measuring yourself, but maybe you are also losing inches?

I am really enjoying my food and it's probably for the first time in the last 5 years that I am not thinking of deserts 24/7.

Still hoping to get that big woosh that Teddy mentioned though Grin
