Question Thread for New Year Bootcampers

As there are so many of us doing this, the chat thread is moving pretty quickly - and it means that lots of questions are being missed.

So here is a specific thread you to post any questions you might have about Bootcamp or low carbing.

Eggs mornay? This is a really old fashioned recipe, and involves making a (flour-based) cheese sauce, so obviously not on for us. But can be adapted:

Per person - 2 hard boiled eggs (or more, depending on how hungry you are!)

Cut eggs in half and place cut-side down in an oven proof dish
Spoon two tablespoons of plain, full-fat yoghurt over the top of the eggs
Top with a handful of grated mature cheddar, and season with black pepper

Place under a hot grill, and cook until the cheese is bubbling and browned.

Makes a lovely (and rich) supper dish. Serve with a green salad.

Godsake - I've got bloody cystitus! How, with the 3+ltrs I drink per day, do the little razorblades hang on in there?

Can't drink cranberry juice, (can I?) so are there cranberry tablets for it?

Ilovemyteddy · 15/01/2013 16:12

Thanks for the info about vitamin D. I followed some of the links about carbs and cancer that BIWI posted on the other thread a couple of days ago and there seems to be a strong link between vit D deficiency and cancer. I lost both parents and a grandparent to cancer so I was interested to read your recent posts BIWI and Mumat39. I'll head off to Boots tomorrow and get some.

BigStickBIWI · 15/01/2013 16:25

Make sure you get the high dosage D3, ilove. The ones I have are Vitabiotics, ultra Vitamin D D3 1000IU Optimum Level

captainmummy Oh no! Best treatment, IME, is Cystopurin. It does contain some sugar and artificial ingredients:

? The active substance is potassium
citrate (3g).
? The other ingredients are mannitol
(E421), citric acid (E330), aspartame
(E951), natural cranberry flavours
(flavours contain cranberry extracts
with sugar and ethanol).
See Section 2 ?Important information
about some of the ingredients of
Cystopurin? for aspartame advice

The above is from the leaflet that's in side the box. Given that cystitis can quickly become a kidney infection, I wouldn't worry too much about the ingredients - I'd just take it straight away.

As far as I'm concerned, yes - it's all I drink!

Thanks for the recipe idea BIWI will be trying that one it sounds yummy Smile

BigStickBIWI · 15/01/2013 18:37

Another one I do sometimes if we're having a salad-type meal is devilled eggs. Hard boil eggs, peel and then cut them in half. Scoop the yolks out and mash them with some mayonnaise and curry powder, and season. (I occasionally put a little bit of mango chutney and/or salad cream in as well, if it's for the DC, but obviously that does add carbs). Shake some cayenne pepper over the top to decorate.

captainmummy · 15/01/2013 19:23

Thanks BIWI for the advice - I used to get cystitis almost every month, round about TOTM. Haven't had it for a while now, forgotten how thigh-clenching it is. Will be down the chemist tomorrow - in the meantime Keeeeeeeeeeep drinking.........

BigStickBIWI · 15/01/2013 19:44

It's horrible. You have all my sympathy.

LucyVFood · 15/01/2013 20:46

Questions:

For dinner I had trout fillets pan-fried in butter and garlic and celeriac/swede chips baked in olive oil. It was gorgeous.

Too much fat? Five seconds worth of oil (a tablespoon? Two?) and a teaspoon of butter.

My other question: How do we feel about sugar-free dilute orange/blackcurrent? I know it's dreadfully childish but I find water boring after the 4th pint of the day Confused

MrsHerculePoirot · 15/01/2013 20:49

lucy never too much fat, have some more!

We are trying to avoid sweeteners see rule 10 of bootcamp. You are trying to break sugar cravings. Try putting cucumber in water instead and leaving for a bit before you drink. Tastes lovely.

LucyVFood · 15/01/2013 20:59

Thanks Mrs. I'll try the cucumber. I'll avoid thinking about ice cold diet coke and how much I miss it. It's the only thing I'm craving. Apart from wine.

BigStickBIWI · 15/01/2013 21:10

Lucy - don't worry about the fat! Honestly! And you didn't use much, so you can stand to use more.

No to the squash. It's full of horrible artificial ingredients, and we're trying to break our need for sweet things. As MrsHP suggests, cucumber in the water is lovely. Ring the changes by drinking sparkling water, and different 'flavours' of sparkling water. I don't mean actual, flavoured water, but try different brands of sparkling water as they do taste different. Perrier tastes completely different from Badoit, for example.

Or try drinking the water hot.

Dh would like to know if he could join the spreadsheet please as he is so thrilled at his weightloss. He wants to join the Mums!!

He started last week at 194lb and is now 188lbs.

TIA

BigStickBIWI · 15/01/2013 21:46

What shall we put him down as? MrRuprekt? Or Ruprekt's DH?

OP posts:
LucyVFood · 15/01/2013 21:47

Thanks BIWI. I do like sparkling water so I'll get some in. It might satisfy the need for fizz.

Ruprekt · 15/01/2013 21:55

Mr Ruprekt would be lovely!

Xenia · 15/01/2013 21:57

Ah vit D. I have strong views about that. In the summer lie with little on for 20 minutes around mid day (in England this is) with no sunscreen. Tablets don't work as well. Good vit D stores are the route to all kinds of good health things including happiness.

BigStickBIWI · 15/01/2013 22:16

It's done, Ruprekt. Hopefully Willie will come along and re-alphabetise it for us as well!

OP posts:
JustasmallGless · 15/01/2013 22:16

I've just had some vit c and zinc fizzy tablet thing and nearly gagged as it was soooo sweet. I also take magnesium

Oh and water. Lets not forget the water
