Question Thread for New Year Bootcampers

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 16:14

As there are so many of us doing this, the chat thread is moving pretty quickly - and it means that lots of questions are being missed.

So here is a specific thread you to post any questions you might have about Bootcamp or low carbing.

Hello all

I'm in - day 3 for me. I'm doing ok so far although I realised today my greek style plain yoghurt is actually quite carby which is a bit of a bummer as I've been eating it for breakfast.

I have a question - why does it say on the spreadsheet of fabulousness not to cook in olive oil and use coconut oil instead? Thanks :)

Ilovemyteddy · 17/01/2013 13:41

Good point about the inch off your waist Anaisa. It's important to measure yourself at or near the start of this WOE because inches come off, even when your weight stays the same. I wish I'd measured myself at the start. I was wearing a 42c bra up until the end of October. Got myself properly measured and I was a 34E!!

If the scales aren't moving, it's almost certain that inches are disappearing. And not always from the obvious places. I've had to have my wedding and engagement ring made smaller; I have adjusted my watch strap by an inch and I have ankles, rather than cankles now Grin

Kiriwawa - I think the advice is changingnow, we always used to be advised to cook with olive oil( the mediterranean diet) but it's lately been advised that heating it can cause the oil to oxidize (Ithink) and release free-radicals (or something) - anyway, better to cook with butter, sunflower oil, or coconut oil.

HTH Grin

Kiriwawa · 17/01/2013 14:07

Thank you captainmummy, that's v helpful

mumat39 · 17/01/2013 14:11

I honestly thought cooking with olive oil is fine, but that it's not good to cook with extra virgin olive oil. Also, reading something recently suggested that when sunflower oil is heated it's actually more toxic that heated olive oil. Cooking with butter or coconut oil is definitely the best.

The other thing about extra virgin olive oil, is that it is good for you cold, so by heating it you lose the goodness which basically means it's not worth the expense. I use virgin olive oil on salads etc but olive oil for cooking. I hope this is okay and that I'm not poisoning my family. Hmm

GinotPrigio · 17/01/2013 15:44

Thanks for the advice BIWI and others. I am cutting out cheese and cream for a few days to see it that helps. I also need to relax and be a bit more patient!

BigStickBIWI · 17/01/2013 17:50

You do indeed, Ginot! Grin

What's the rules on gin and slimline tonic after Bootcamp?

BigStickBIWI · 17/01/2013 18:43

Well you can have some alcohol - but just remember that slimline tonic contains artificial additives, which may slow down your fat burning and therefore weight loss (plus we're trying to avoid anything nasty!)

Vodka and soda/rum and soda is much better, if you like those.

Although don't take any notice of me because nobody else does - just drink what the hell you like

BigStickBIWI · 17/01/2013 18:44

Bootcamp Light rules are on a tab on the bottom of the Spreadsheet of Marvellousness

Alcohol no more than twice a week ...

slatternlymother · 17/01/2013 19:27

Yes I know BIWI but my mac doesn't like the spreadsheet Sad

I will try the other drinks as well, but if I don't like them then I thought a G&T would be the lesser of two evils when compared with wine.

MrsHerculePoirot · 17/01/2013 19:31

On a mac the tabs are hyperlinks at the top I think? Depends on browser possibly. I find the spreadsheet slower to load but still possible to use.

slatternlymother · 17/01/2013 19:51

I am just generally shit mrshercule Blush

MrsHerculePoirot · 17/01/2013 20:05

No you're not slatternly! It is deffo harder on a mac, but look at the top and see if the hyperlinks work... I kept getig confused as to where the tabs were.... Or just stick to bootcamp proper FOREVER!!!!!

BigStickBIWI · 17/01/2013 20:23

Oh - I didn't realise it was not so easy for Mac users. Sorry, slatternly.

G&T is definitely a better bet than wine which is a great pity, but if you can go for something with sparkling water, like vodka or rum, it is even better.

What would be a good low carb content for sausages?

AndDoesItMatter?

WillieWaggledagger · 18/01/2013 08:30

sorry the spreadsheet is difficult in safari - it's pretty crap in Explorer too so i tend to use google chrome, but i don't know whether that's an option on a mac

i find i can make v minor changes using my iphone but it's v slow and easy to make mistakes

BigStickBIWI · 18/01/2013 12:00

The Black Farmer sausages are very low carb and very tasty I think - from memory - they are 1.3g carbs per 100g. And a pack of 6 sausages weighs 400g - which works out at 0.87g carbs per sausage.

Sainsbury's sell them - don't know about other supermarkets.

And it does matter - some sausages can be shockingly high in carbs, because they are full of so much rusk.

KerryKetosis · 18/01/2013 12:23

I'm on a mac, the spreadsheet is fine in google chrome.

Jacaqueen · 18/01/2013 13:38

I had a look at the carb content of some basic sausages in tesco today.

Richmond pork had around 8g per sausage. The ones I buy have between 0.8 and 1.5 per sausage. A huge difference.

bulletwithbutterflywings · 18/01/2013 14:46

Can i have rennies ? I am the heartburn queen! I don't have sugar free ones and its too snowy to go to the shops.

QuickLookBusy · 18/01/2013 15:48

Can I ask a very premature question?Blush

When we have lost all our weight I presume we will still be low carbing in order to maintain the correct weight. But does that mean we will be able to eat some "good" carbs? For example wholemeal toasted bread (homemade) not that I've been dreaming of it every minute of today

prettybird · 18/01/2013 16:40

I was planning on having curry tonight - but Lidl had sold out of Chicken Tikka Masala and only have shedloads of Chicken Korma and I won't eat Jalfrezi and Balti due to presence of pernicious peppers

Ds has said he would like (home made) chicken nuggets. Given that I have had hardly any carbs today, would the small amount of bread crumbs be OK? I make my nuggets by dipping the chicken pieces in egg and then in a breadcrum and parmesan mix. Or do I need to make myself something separate?

So far today, I have had 2 boiled eggs for breakfast, 2 slices of salami for a snack and an avocado salad for lunch (half an avo, plenty of rocket, a sliced spring onion and an nice oily dressing made with plenty of olive oil, some grain mustard and a wee bit of white wine vinegar). Oh - and my usual "cheat": too many cups of tea (but only with a splash of milk in them).

BigStickBIWI · 18/01/2013 18:28

QLB - when you get to your goal weight, the task is obviously to maintain it. Hopefully by the time you reach goal, you will have gained a much better understanding of carbs and low carb eating. You will be able to eat more carbs, but the trick is to introduce them very gradually, so that you can see at what point you start to gain weight.

A slice of wholemeal toast in the morning is probably a very good thing to start experimenting with - just don't expect to be able to have toast in the morning, a sandwich for lunch and pasta in the evening!

Thanks BIWI, that's reassuring.

I actually think I am missing making the bread tbh, but this afternoon I found a lovely recipe for almond crackers. Had some for tea with cheese and salad and they were delicious! It also satisfied my need to bake and will be making more.

I'm sure I got the recipe from one of these threads, will have a look and pop it on the recipe thread if it's not there.
