Question Thread for New Year Bootcampers

BigStickBIWI · 07/01/2013 16:14

As there are so many of us doing this, the chat thread is moving pretty quickly - and it means that lots of questions are being missed.

So here is a specific thread you to post any questions you might have about Bootcamp or low carbing.

I am loving the words......'you must eat more fat!'

No-one has EVER said that to me!!

Grin

I think we should focus on our food and less on the weightloss or we will become obsessed! I have lost 8lb in one week and DH has lost 6.5lb in a week.

I certainly do not expect to lose that this week.

My mother poo pooed the diet as I knew she would but I laughed and told her she can count WW points forever but all my WW books are in the bin!!!!!

Very therapeutic.

WillieWaggledagger · 14/01/2013 15:23

ruprekt, i know it's a very immature attitude, but it gives me endless pleasure to add a massive dollop of mayo and a slab of butter to my veg in front of my mother!

BigStickBIWI · 14/01/2013 15:30

mumat39 - a lot of the fat that we have laid down is actually internal, around our organs. It's known, I think, as visceral fat. So it could be that you are losing this first.

This is an interesting piece about it - and that it's more dangerous that 'ordinary' fat

Oh, I have fat round my liver. Do you think this woe will get rid?

Prolificmincepiebreeder · 14/01/2013 17:47

Thank you willie and biwi you are both of course right!
I think I was just so thrilled to lose so much so quickly that for those scales to be stuck utterly threw me!
I need to drink more water, I also think hormones aren't helping I'm awaiting AF so I'm sure that's not helping matters.

Thanks :) I needed some wise words

BigStickBIWI · 14/01/2013 18:02

It should do, Bessie.

(Incidentally, how do you know that?!)

OP posts:
mumat39 · 14/01/2013 18:40

Thanks BIWI. I'll have a read in a mo. :)

mumat39 · 14/01/2013 23:16

Hi again.

Sorry to bug you again, but, the last couple of days, I have noticed my legs feel really tired when I walk up a flight of stairs, particularly my thighs. Is that part of the switch over from carb to fat burning?

Thankyou.

WillieWaggledagger · 14/01/2013 23:23

Almost certainly mumat39 - I remember having a waking through treacle feeling for a while

mumat39 · 14/01/2013 23:44

Aww thanks WillieWaggle :)

It's good to know. Walking through treacle is a perfect description. Thank you.

Thanks

Mumat39 I found making sure I had enough salt and taking a multi vitamin helped with that sort of thing btw.

BigStickBIWI · 15/01/2013 08:13

Yes, mumat39 - make sure you're keeping your salt levels up, and also look at potassium and magnesium-rich foods - spinach, salmon and avocado are all good.

PennyHofstadter · 15/01/2013 09:24

I too have had AF arrive... I hold onto water like a sponge during this time so I'm not expecting to see much on the scales over the next couple of days.

Anyhoo my question was about vitamins... Should we be taking vitamins/supplements when LC'ing? I don't take anything currently but is there anything people would recommend?

mumat39 · 15/01/2013 09:37

Thank you lovely ladies. :) I love avocados so will stock up on those and I have a multivitamin that I keep forgetting to take.

Hope you all have a good day. Xxx

BigStickBIWI · 15/01/2013 10:43

Penny - if you're eating plenty of natural, unprocessed foods - with your carbs coming from veg and salad - then you probably don't need a supplement.

However, lots of us take some for various different reasons. I take Berocca daily - a Vit B supplement with other bits and pieces, like Vit C. I use it to get my first 500ml of water down, and also take a calcium, Vit D and magnesium supplement. This one is because I have concerns about osteoporosis (I'm menopausal) and because of the link between lack of Vit D and cancer (my mum died from breast cancer)

OP posts:
mumat39 · 15/01/2013 11:00

BIWI, sorry to hear that. ((()))

I'm a bit obsessed with Vit D and make sure my kids have some everyday. I didn't know about the link with cancer.

About 2 years ago, I was being seen by a consultant about thyroid issues. The medication was at the right level but I felt like poo. Lots of aches and pains and joint stiffness. He tested my Vit D levels and they were about 14 or 16. The gp said that was a lot lower than he'd seen so gave me a Vit d injection. The next day I felt like a completely different person. I was also given tablets of 2000iu per day and after 6 months things were SO much better.

I was told by the consultant to take it forever. The gp said nonsense, so I stopped. Gradually I started to feel rubbish again. So now, if I remember, I take some everyday. It's important to lots of cell activity and bodily functions as well as helping with the absorption of calcium.

Anyway, withering on, but with the almost complete lack of sun in the uk last year, I would bet money on the fact that a large percentage of the population are deficient in Vit D.

Incidentally, if you do take this, then try and get D3' cholecalciferol, as It's better that the D2 ergocalciferol, as it's more easily absorbed ino the body.

Also, I've read that Vit C can really help with symptoms of depression.

Sorry for the off topic essay!

BigStickBIWI · 15/01/2013 11:08

Not off topic at all, mumat39 - somehow all these things are linked in the end!

OP posts:
BigStickBIWI · 15/01/2013 11:09

There is even some suggestion that a Vitamin D deficiency is implicated in weight gain

OP posts:
BigStickBIWI · 15/01/2013 11:11

and also, can cause hunger pangs ...

OP posts:
mumat39 · 15/01/2013 11:12

Wittering on. Not withering.

Sorry to hear that BIWI.

Thanks both for your advice, I'm so glad I'm came across the Bootcamp thread last week. It's been the best google search I think I've ever done!

mumat39 · 15/01/2013 11:33

i am convinced wonder if in future, lots of modern day issues such as increasing allergies will be found to be directly impacted by Vit D deficiencies.

Just my opinion tho.

All fascinating stuff really.

halfthesize · 15/01/2013 13:11

sorry to hear that BIWI I have also been wondering about supplements, I take zinc and vit c. perhaps I should add vit d?
so a question: I have just been given 3 dozen eggs from friends dad(farmer) had too many. what can I do with them bar the obviousConfused
